He didn't show you, but there is a filter system. Choose "level up" and the game will just show the crew that can level. It makes manually levelling the crew, which is best, very easy.

There is also a filter for the ship upgrades, making the menu Splatty complaint about much more easy to use.

This game is also surprisingly hardcore. Like Risk of Rain, it gets harder as time passes. It's kind of subtle because the time scale is long, but there is a curve you need to stay ahead of, and even though a run can be long, there always eventually comes a point where you realize the curve is ahead of you and you are now living on borrowed time.

BTW, that encounter at ~37:30 didn't lose you rep for no reason. It was essentially a space cop of a local faction that hailed you asking you to submit to an inspection of your cargo to check for illegal/restricted goods.
You decided that rather than stop the ship for inspection, you'd rather throw up a signal jamming field, hang up on the space cop and just sail on past without a word to them.
So yeah, you lost rep with them, since you're acting like a very suspicious smuggler or pirate, but they also can't pin anything aside from being shady on you, so it's only 4 rep lost, 3 of which you were saved from due to aforementioned signal jammer keeping them from identifying you you personally are.

One of my favorite games of all time. I agree about the ship outfitting menu and the strange outputs from the rep system. I definitely agree that the prisoner exchange should have a benefit for all rather than a detriment. yeah, i made a total war pirate run, where i raided every ship not of my starting faction or allied with them. it became very stressful and i felt like harrassed by all the bounty hunters, zealots and military commanders they sent after me. it was like 5 fights each hour. would be more if i just blasted them out of space instead of always boarding them but that fitted more in the theme of being a pirate ^^
Stressful but i had fun. This game really has something for everyone:
    Trading
    Card game
    Darkest dungeon style boarding action
    Customizable Characters and ships
And many more features. it really is a project of love.

I just want to say this, because I don't know if anyone knows this, but a long long time ago, the Trese Brothers, developers of this game, made an old simple and (looking back) a fairly silly game for Android called Space Traders RPG. I purchased a copy of this game, and fell in love with it immediately. I'm so happy to see Star Traders Frontiers come to fruition for these guys. The developers of this game always seemed to care about the people who played their games, and more than that, care about the input of the players. So cheers to Trese Brothers. I'm glad to see you doing well.

Galaxies are products of RNG. When you start a new game, it will generate a new galaxy with new star systems (and locations), warp lanes, ownership, etc. The NICE thing is, you can reuse those settings to get the same galaxy again with a code (somewhere, It's been a while) in a similar fashion as Minecraft.

Hey splattercat, I know this game is several years old but I just got it for my phone. There's not a lot of phone games that I think are good but dead cells in this are pretty much all I play when I game on phone. I've spent about maybe 16 hours in the game so far and I love it to death and the only thing I would change is probably the amount of times your crew will Mutiny and the amount of times your ship gets attacked by other ships. Aside from those nitpicks I think this game is awesome and your video helped me cement that immensely. I can always turn to your videos for obscure games that most people don't cover.

They are definitely learning from their past effort! I hope they do the rest well too. I hoped that the default game for Cyberknights, for example, could let you have a drone, with the hackers possibly being able to control more through cyberware. They could then also come with hires. That game I have like no issue with how it is. It is the rest I have a lot to say about. This one I just want more to mess with and use and have ideas, much like the rest. These games challenge my critical eye in ways I will never get elsewhere and I relish that, likewise passionate. It is so cool they are getting the attention they deserve; it gives me even more hope for my own work. I still want to collab with these guys!

Meaning not only will there be opportunity for multiple plots depending on your Faction, there may also be more stories generated by your own crew as they go through turns or their past comes back to cause everyone issues...
These are the types of story beats the Bros prefer and still had to work within their budgetary scope.

When the senior generals are mad or embarassed for a failed mission, they dont call Private Spaynk and yell at him about his poor performance that caused a mission failure. They tell the general below them, the Army or Corps Commander who likely had nothing to do with it but is in command of that Theater or Operational area. They are responsible for the people under their command. So that General calls his Division Commander, a lower tiered general in charge of that Tactical command area and the troops in it. He gets torqued because his Division had the overall responsibility which he delegated to his Brigade Commander. So he gives him a call. The Brigade commander, a Colonel who commands troops in that sector where the mission took place gets an earful because his Division commander knows that Army HQ is pissed and shared that with him so now he is embarassed and angry. He calls his Battalion Commander a Lieutenant-Colonel to whom he assigned that mission and rips him a new one. But that Lieutenant Colonel has a Company Commander who was assigned the task of accomplishing that mission objective. The Captain likely in his mid to late 20s but who is called, "The old man" by his troops is now furious and likely a bit worried at his future career prospects. He assigned that mission to one of four Platoon Leaders, a young 2nd Lieutenant who is fresh out of training and likely on his first, maybe his second assignment. So he calls the platoon leader into his presence for an ass chewing.
Now, that 2nd Lieutenant leaves the Captain, minus his ass and heads down to find his Platoon Sergeant a Sergeant First Class who is older than dirt. He shares with him "The old man's" displeasure and sets about ensuring that the Platoon Sergeant is most definatively aware that he no longer has an ass and that he most displeased at both that fact and the likelihood that he may be looking for work soon. But the Platoon Sergeant is already well aware of these facts because he had his own ass chewed off by the Non-Commissioned Officer's chain of concern going from the Company First Sergeant to the Battalion Command Sergeants Major through a series of more and more experienced and highly placed Command Sergeants Majors right back up to the Army HQ. Yet the chain proceeds downward because there are still 4 squads in this platoon and Private Spaynk is assigned to one of them. That squad is run by a Staff Sergeant squad leader. So the Staff Sergeant gets called to the matt and gets his ass chewed off. Yet each squad has two Team Leaders and it was their job to make sure Private Spaynk did his job so the team leader, a Specialist gets called before the Squad leader along with Private First Class Spaynk who finally catches hell for failing to do his assigned task of cleaning the toilet in the latrine at the visitor center the day the Secretary of the Army visited and his wife found a floater in the female latrine. And that is when Private Spaynk informs his Team Leader that the Army contractor who was contracted to clean the latrines had locked the latrine and barred his entrance citing contractoral issues and had gone on break moments before the Secretary of the Armys visit and as such Private Spaynk could not have cleaned the female latrine.
And now you know how the Army works.

Used to watch a streamer play this back when Trese Bros were just releasing it and it's definitely fun to watch but too much tedium for me in managing the ship and crew. I highly enjoy watching others unfurl the stories in this game and wish I could get into it myself.

If there is a lot to digest here, and it is the case, that makes this game a feast of kings. Just to imagine the amount of passion from the Devs to make it and from the players to lives hundreds and hundreds of stories...dizzying.

@@Iverath exactly what Splay described. Char gen is split into groups like stats, skills, items, whatever. You assign a priority to them, higher priority gets more. Like you can't pick best possible starting stats and most starting cash, you would have to pick.

43:00 This is a rant from someone who must be a mercenary from the Battletech universe... The amount of Battletech Merc this argument exudes is fraggin amazing lol. For real: "I would hate the merc that Steiner sent our way, but... it's a merc who was working through the mercs guild and they did a damn good job. Huh, maybe I should hire them to retaliate."

Good mobile game that. Very good indeed.
In Beguining of the game just go transport mode. My opinion.
No weapons. Just escape mode mods and fuel mods for the ship. Too much fighting and the crew leaves. Everytime the ship takes damage the morale goes down and down.
Do non ship fighting missions (transport cargo, people, prisoners, planet exploration etc) and save money for the 3 million currency ships, while leveling up the crew.
Crew levels up when ever ship is in motion and with missions of course. No ship to ship fighting needed. Eventualy, when navigators (or is it pilots? Forget now. Both classes are needed anyways 4 of each is optimum, 6 navigators is best to start with) are high level you can escape all encounters before they actually evolve into a duel of ships with one of their class traits.
Been trying for 3 times to follow the main story, hard mode, with the the Princess sister, the scientist and the lab arc, with my optimised group (who I think are close to possible max level with out missing the deadline of the story) of back sniper, pistoleer, and 2 melee, but that genetic aberration still whacks me every time! 🤣🤣🤣
