Marvellous, many thanks :) I trained in Pencak-Silat under Jan De Jong, in Perth, Western Australia, for about ten years - starting in 1980 (I had been training in other stuff since about 1965) . I have done Bajiquan (Chinese Martial arts) for decades. If anyone want to learn beside Chinese Martial Arts then i would recommend Silat (Indonesia/Malaysia/Singapore), i like Silat because it has a lot similarity from my stuff. Both Chinese Martial Arts & Silat are good. If anyone doesn't have any experience in any Martial Arts i would recommend Silat. My advise you don't have to mix Silat to other art. Guru Zainal merely describes about the Silat school that he's trained in. There are many other Silat schools in Malaysia that didn't begin from either the Orang Asli or any form of tribal dance. The Malay people are not one and the same with the Orang Asli. The Malay people have been inhabiting the entire Malay Archipelago for aeons. The archipelago is huge in terms of its size. Back when there were no Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore etc, the Malay Archipelago was already in existence. Going back to the system of Silat as a recognized body of knowledge, in order to fully grasp the full essence of its training, one has to embrace Islam and its teachings. Failure or a blatant refusal to do so would ensure that the practitioner in question would not go far and deep in his or her quest to learn and practice the Art of Silat. One such system or school of Silat is the Silat Seni Gayong founded by the late Dato' Meor Abdul Rahman. Dato' Meor and his forefathers were definitely not Orang Asli. In the system of Gayong, not only a great emphasis is placed on the physical aspects of training, "spiritual development" based on Islam too plays an extremely vital role to ensure a comprehensive and well-rounded Silat fighter could be produced.
@Daniel. You might be aware that Silat Maul Mornie of Brunei has mentioned that it was originally classified as Kuntau which in the Chinese Hokkien dialect means martial art. And there are many styles in Malaysia & Indonesia where the salutation is reminiscent of every Kung Fu system.
Nice video, if you want to get a more complete view of Silat it is also a must to visit Sumatra and West-Java, the origin of some of the most famous Silat styles.
