It is believed to be the oldest surviving martial art in the world, with a history spanning over 3,000 years. We explore its legendary origins, philosophy and step-by-step technique and practice.

I was born in India and grew up in London and Tokyo. When I was a kid, I was bullied, saying that there were no martial arts in India, and Indians couldn't fight (sure, I couldn't fight). I wish I had this video at hand, so I could show them that we indeed do have our 3000 year old martial art - STILL PRACTICED TODAY!
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or kickboxing would be more practical martial arts for general self defence. You may not always have a sword and shield on hand 🤷🏻♂️
Edit: I understand that Kalari has a no-weapon form to it where hand-to-hand combat is incorporated.
I also understand that Mixed Martial Arts is a sport that has become increasingly popular since the early 90s, and that the most effective martial arts have, by default, been highlighted by some of the most prolific fighting athletes of our generation.
None of them have used Kalari.
It wasn't an attack on Kalari as a martial art, but merely an observation to try and help people who may want to learn THE MOST EFFECTIVE forms of self defence.
@@simoncraggs1238 there are different forms of kalari ..in kalari u can fight with ur bare hands
Dude, actually, Kalari was the first martial arts. Chinese Shaolin Kung Fu is derived from Kalari. But like all true Asian martial arts, it treats self defense as a life and death situation. Western martial arts treat self defense as a game or sport. Like UFC doesn’t allow trapping.
Believe it or not most martial arts in Southeast Asia -- from muay thai and lethwei to arnis/eskrima/kali and silat -- are also derived from Indian martial arts
India had Mallayuddha which is father of modern MMA
As a Cambodian American, I learned that ancient Cambodians were Hindus and heavily influenced by Ancient India. Looking the tools they used, style of clothing and fighting styles, I can definitely see the influence.
Yes. Back then, the influence of India (Bharat and its dharma) was spread all across South Asia, South East asia, tibet, china, mongolia, japan even till Afghanistan (the Gandhar (now known as kandahar) and bamiyan buddha statue (which were blown up by taliban).
The largest temple in the world is actually still in Combodia..
Ancient Cambodians had their own native folk religion before Hinduism spread.
@@awakenedjedi5432 now there is an update on that. Largest temple is in India (Iskon Mayapur). And largest church of Asia is in Nagaland (India).

you know the weird thing is this is the father of all martial arts, just for reference a king who is a practitioner (Bodhidharma) from south India gave up his titles and went to explore the world, eventually he got to china and began the physical training of the monks of Shaolin Monastery that led to the creation of Shaolin kungfu. @@nishanthk4882 He's partly right though. He didn't say that Bodhidharma taught them martial arts. He said he taught them various physical exercises, which is true. This was once a lethal martial art meant to kill, and was very effective. Which is why it was banned completely by the British and as far as I’ve heard, a lot of the techniques has been lost.. nowadays it’s more of physical exercise to maintain fitness. Correct me if I’m wrong
@ Serving It Cold
There is an upload in yt of the movie, THE LAST LEGION. This lethal artform is expertly displayed in this movie.
You are right in saying that it was banned. It was learned primarily for defence. I have studied it briefly, my master said “ God will protect you from the first blow, check if it’s your friend or foe, if a friend reason with them, if a foe run, in spite of avoiding combat if the opponent still engages you , only defend yourself, attack if your life or limb is threatened.” So discipline of the body and mind was the primary intent and defense” Killing is never the intent. There are enough techniques to disable the opponent without killing.

Many people commented why there are no kalaris outside kerala and wished if they could learn kalari payattu. Some points to note here:
-in erstwhile Kerala, we had many smaller princely states. A kalari guru would have his kalari near or as part of his house, where soldiers train under him and his best warriors. They were most often supported by the state rulers. When there were disputes or fights between the states the rulers would pick their best kalari, to send their best warriors (Chekavas)for a duel (ankam). These were often public events, where they fought till one side was eliminated (killed). In this sense kalari payattu is never an art, nor was its objective mere self defence.
- So its not accurate to refer to kalaris and kalari payattu as a martial 'art', the way you say kung-fu or judo is a martial art. Payattu is not same as saying kungfu - payattu is the training you undergo in the kalari to become a warrior. These warriors were called Chekavas (literally warriors / soldiers). They would fight in 'ankams' (duels) for their country, and to settle disputes.
-kalari payattu techniques have always (even to this day) been passed down through the guru shishya parampara (scheme of education). It takes very high level of dedication and regular training, strict diet etc starting from very young age to become a well trained warrior. Its not at all like getting a 'belt' after spending your summer vacation at local karate school ( no disrespect, I am just saying Kalari Payattu was never commercialized and sold all over like other Asian martial arts). This and its use of lethal weapons once you have trained above the basics is probably the reason it stayed near its place of origin.
-for those who are getting goosebumps seeing this video, I recommend reading the Ballads of Northern Malabar, which are songs on famous Chekavas passed down by word of mouth.
basically, how the tradition of Samurai was in Japan, they were all warriors and practiced fighting skills and not some self-defense art. I think since Shaolin monks were Buddhists and it is taught the same as Hinduism that every life is sacred, they changed the lethal aspect of Kalaripayattu for self-discipline, self-defense when necessary, etc.
None of the three gurukkals I learned from ever said anything about any strict diet - they eat everything themselves. Nowadays, there are many people, both Malayalee and otherwise, teaching in many different parts of India and other parts of the world. I myself teach in Kolkata.
Sir will u tell me some best kallaripayattu residential school

@ugly endian lindu definitely you are from China. Because China was under india rule for 1000s of years and was admitted by many like Hu Shih.
The whip-like weapon being used at 7:20 is considered to be one of the most lethal hand to hand weapons in the world. It's a series (7 I think) of razor sharp steel ribbons . It's going to go around whatever shield you try to use and flay whatever part of you it comes into contact with. Absolutely terrifying
It is called urumi (the flexible sword)
Thats true
It's also called Dand Patta. This used to be one of the go to weapon for Maratha soldiers. In case they get get surrounded by numerical superior enemy troops, just one precise strike will be enough to inflict maximum damages. A person standing near the striking range of this weapon can even lose limbs. Best example was the Battle of Pawankhind, where Narvir Bajiprabhu Deshpande used this weapon with supreme precision. Very few people know that the weapon manufacturers of Western Ghats were too good, in terms of building weapons for hand to hand combat, be it the whiplash swords, Waghanaqa or perfecting the European swords as per Indian standards.
I am from Kerala southern state of India from which this martial art Kalari originated. Legends has it Lord parasuram ( incarnation of Lord Vishnu ) created the land of Kerala by throwing his divine axe into the sea. And he taught his students Kalari which he learned from Lord Shiva himself. And there are stories of legendary Kalari masters like Othena kurupp, Aromal chekavar, and King Pazhassi raja who fought against British east India company.

Kerala has
now become a secular dirty state where Christians ans muslims rule and Hindus follow them
for example, kalari have open palm strike style . it's different from closed fist ring fight martial arts like boxing , mma... even modern street fights for prize money has closed fists. so you will not see a practisioner striking an suspended bag in kalari but instead you will see technique for attacking vital parts like eyes , weak/back neck part of head , hand to hand blocking etc . speed is the most important part . in boxing you need 'form' and speed coz 'form' generates power . in kalari 'form' is replaced by ' translational speed ' . in case you could pick and hide small stone from surrounding, you don't need anymore power - all you need is the speed to touch opponents. hence all excersises are made to enhance this speed . this also means kalari can never be domesticated. there's a section of people who want to convert kalari into an competition form . but competition forms can never impart permanent damage - for example poking eyes are banned . attacking eyes are one off the premiere technique in kalari .you take it away its not kalaripayattu. so kalari will never be popular ,hope it need not be popular . kalari will always remain amoung few practisioners , military and as an deadly fight style.
You just made a good argument to promote Kalaripayattu as a self defense training rather than a sporting event. Since it's a warfare technique evolved to serve mercenaries who fought to kill, it obviously wouldn't have any consideration for 'fairness'. Even that move called 'poozhikadakan' wiping up dirt with the flexible sword, popularized by folk Ballads is anything but fair...Those will be just meaningless in any competition
🤣🤣
Bodhidharman was taught martial arts by Prajnatara who himself was a Brahmin patriarch of Indian Buddhism according to Chan Buddhism and the head of the Sarvastivada sect of early Buddhist schools which got popular during Ashoka reign, he was from eastern India who went southern part to India to distribute the knowledge. Indians might speak different language or belong to different caste but we are one in our consciousness. The cultural unity can't broken by anything. It's good thing that we have a political entity which is safeguarding our civilizations into one strong state.
Prajnatara taught him bhudhism , but south indian martial arts trace their lineages to Agasthyar mainly for Tamil Martial arts , and Parushuram (Kalari). We cannot say that Bhodhihdarma taught the exact martial arts in shaolin temple, it is wrong. He was enlightened , and knows how to develop a martial arts by his own. Being from south he know , martial arts are to liberate consciousness . There is a Bhodhidhara sword techniques in shaolin temple still today.
@@adhi7610 the only things that boddhidhrma left for martial arts in shaolin is only the something qi gong like training, the martial arts that developed in shaolin temple is come accross from many places in china since it used to be one of favorite places for generals and warlords to retire
Bodhidharma wasn't a real person. He was a Chinese Buddhist folk hero meant to represent dharma enlightenment. Chinese martial arts were never influenced by Indian martial arts at all. That part is Indian propaganda.

We have the same form of martial art in Sri Lanka called "Angampora". It said to have dated back to Ravana times. There were two main schools in Sri Lanka teaching Angampora called "Sudaliya & Maru walliya" from 16th to 19th century.
It looks identical to what I see here. It's the same story that, British banned it, realizing how dangerous it could be for their control in Sri Lanka. British reportedly shot & killed all Angampora warriors at sight & confiscated their family assets. Few families secretly kept the tradition going but much of the knowledge of the art is lost now.
There were records that there was a connection between Sri Lanka & Kerala in this martial arts. In 18th century, one of the Sri Lankan girls went to Kerala after her father was defeated (killed) in a fight using unethical practice. She mastered the art in Kerala, came to Sri Lanka disguising as a man & defeated her father's killer. After exposing who she was, king has appointed her as a provincial governor (disapathi) & she has been the one & only lady provincial governor in Sri Lanka till recent.

These guys are fantastic. The ladies are even better. They're all so fast!! I wouldn't even know what to do if a dude came at me with a whip for a sword, other than bend over and kiss it goodbye, and maybe reevaluate the life choices that put me in a situation where a guy with whip sword was coming at me. It's really great to see how passionate the teachers are. It shows it the quality of their students.
That rope like sword is called Urumi, it's a weapon taught to only the most advanced students because the wielder of that weapon can mortally wound himself if doesn't have mastery over the weapon. In fact the easiest way to kill an enemy might be to just hand him your Urumi if you are sure he doesn't know how to use it skillfully.
Because of you British rulers, we would have lost the connection from this gem Kalaripayattu as it was banned in 1804. They stopped the Gurukulas from teaching and practicing this art. But thanks to the Gurukkals for resetting the ban and preserving the Kalaripayattu art. I don't know why but in the past few decades after Independence it didn't get the deserved attention, thankfully now it is getting some attention and recognition in the world and hopefully, by the end of this decade, it will be popular like other arts.
There is much more to kalaripayattu than we see and taught in gurukuls, I'm an expert in military combat and I once fought a Guru who was a master of kalaripayattu, even without a weapon i couldn't touch him all my attacks touched him but it was like my body was working according to his mind. My instructor always told me never to fight a kalaripayattu student who has completed his Gurukul cuz i won't be able to beat him the only way i can win is by outnumbering him. And i went for the master, then I knew that even the top military combat made for killing is nothing in front of kalaripayattu.
