The term 'silat' is actually referring to any form of martial arts in the nusantara archipelago. The fact is there are so many different styles since it is originally developed by families/clans. In one area of Indonesia, there may be dozens of styles that are still survive currently. These styles is originally passed on from generations by parents to their son/daughter.

@@jesussmanait7486he wrote a little too generally. And personally i would write about the malay archipel. Would be more correct. Silat has a lot of styles and lineages. Yes. But there is not only Silat. Kun tao for example is there often too. Some silat and some FMA lineages has some similarites. But FMA is FMA and every lineage is different. Like Silat.

Learning silat means you're learning how to turn yourself to be a weapon to kill in a quick way with your bare hands or weapons because silat is a warfare martial art, survive or die... that's the rules. I dont know what people outside of my region in southeast asia think about silat when they learn it but for me who knew the history of silat, it was created to kill enemies in battlefields. That's why when you learning silat here, your teacher or guru of silat will always remind you not to misuse or show off with your silat. Never start a fight or to get into fights only to protect and war. However, if you learn the real silat for warfare which is the origin of silat it will take years to mastered it then you can kill people in the matter of seconds with or without weapons.

A nice documentary. I have two points to argue.
    1. The Majapahit empires never reached the shores of Malay Peninsular (now Peninsular Malaysia) because there were already strong governments there such as the Kedah and Melaka Kingdoms. Srivijaya did.
    2. Pencak silat most probably did not originate only in Indonesia. What we call Silat (in Malaysia) or Pencak Silat (in Indonesia) is an umbrella term that encompasses hundreds, if not thousands, of fighting systems. Many did originate from Indonesia, but many also originated from all areas in Southeast Asia (Malaysia, Brunei, Philipines, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Burma). Some of these systems are inter-related but there are those that are completely disparate.

the origin of pencak silat, don't be searching in the era of Srivijaya & Majapahit.
trace in the Mataram kindom and the Sunda kelapa kingdom, when it was still influenced by Hinduism-Budhaism.
Borobudur temple (budhaism) has a relic of the Mataram kingdom, there is a war relif, which refers to the pencak silat.
even the Shaolin monks exchanged knowledge by visiting the Borobudur temple at that time.
almost all of the kingdoms in Southeast Asia, many had been influenced by the Srivijaya kingdom
Srivijaya was famous as a skilled sailor, before going abroad on the sea, they were equipped with "silek", besides trading they spread silek it is not strange mention the basic of pencak silat in Southeast Asia comes from the the Srivijaya kingdom.
At majapahit kingdom era, majapahit army under "gajah mada", used to be equipped with semar coins for strength, relics of the army can still be found in Kalimantan, Vietnam & Thailand.

I know sometimes the truth hurts.

The early form of silat originated from a martial art called "Sundang," which was created for the elite warriors of Majapahit. Sundang Majapahit is a martial art created by Mahesa Anabrang, combining techniques from the Singasari and Dharmasraya kingdoms. It also uses both swords and keris, with different styles for various combat scenarios: Sundang Gunung (Mountain) for defense, Sundang Kali (River) for offense, Sundang Laut (Sea) for conquest, Sundang Angin (Wind) for infiltration, and Sundang Matahari (Sun) for protection. Sundang Kali spread to the Philippines, influencing the development of "Kali Majapahit"
This is the truth that not many people know or don't wanna know, they have just speculated that silat came from the Malay region, but no one has ever clearly identified its exact location

It was his family that introduced Silat to the USA back in the 1950's. I leave you to research him, but it's no exaggeration to say he's world famous and recognized as one of the greatest living Silat masters (go see what Dan Inosanto has to say about the de Thouars family and their system). @@pocopongpong7948 only historical evidence of Islam existence is since Muhammad's period. There's no evidence of Adam or his beliefs, except for self proclamation by the Muslims. The original silat was way before that and had spiritual essence and salutations to the sun which is far from Islamic teachings. Today's silat especially in Malaysia have discarded all those spiritual elements and modified it in accordance to Islamic teachings. The word Nusantara was derived from Sanskrit so it make sense where the spiritual influence came from. The word Malay didn't exist that time and don't get confused with Malay Archipelago which is not just referring to the malays in Malaysia today. Nevertheless silat is a beautiful ancient martial art.

Pencak Silat and Silat Are Very Different Because:
    1. Pencak silat from Indonesia (registered in UNESCO as a cultural, artistic and spiritual tradition)
    2. silat from Malaysia (registered in UNESCO as a sport developed by Malaysia)
Pencak silat from Indonesia was designed to kill in dance because during the colonial era, Indonesians were prohibited from learning any martial arts.
That's why if you delve deeper into pencak silat you will be able to learn a killing technique that is only taught by a trainer if the trainer feels you are more mature and responsible.
But silat from Malaysia is a sport.

You can find out the truth that pencak silat and silat are very different through UNESCO

On one such visit to Majapahit, Hang Tuah fought a duel with the famed pendekar Taming Sari. After a brutal fight Hang Tuah emerged as winner, and then Singhavikramavardhana, the ruler of Majapahit, bestowed upon him Taming Sari's kris or dagger.
