  • In Kerala, southern India there still exists an ancient martial art which is believed to be the very thing which gave birth to Shaolin kung fu and jiu jitsu. Despite a longstanding ban under British rule, the secrets of kalaripayattu have been passed down by masters who are leading a revival of the form.

I used to travel around the world and train in all the local martial arts, so I've trained in many martial arts in my time, and I have to say Kalaripayattu was physically the hardest. The body conditioning was intense, but you are never left to suffer. The massage they do is a deep as Thai massage and as soothing as Swedish, and when you train with them you are not just a student, you have to become part of the family. There is also something very special about training on rough dirt as opposed to raised floor, tiles, or even grass. I trained in Kerala in the late 80s, and I've never really understood why more people are not aware or, or practising this art. Maybe that's a good thing. I just wanted to say this martial art is very, very special.

+Benjamin Zephaniah Good comment, being a person that is generally very interested in martial arts, fighting, and combat sports, and now as of late also very intrigued by just movement of the human body and other living organisms, seeing this video and discovering that this art was formed very early on, is extremely interesting especially that it is/could be the pioneer to arts such as Kung-fu, karate and Jiu Jitsu, as I train in Goju-Kai (Goju-Ryu off shoot) which comes from Kung-fu itself and also now training in BJJ. I just think this kind of stuff is fascinating and your comment is a good insight seeing as you've actually trained it, maybe one day I can give it a try too, I'd definitely be up for it if I ever had the chance...

The British occupation is the main reason Kalari is almost an extinct martial art now. They banned its practice in the 19th century and jailed or killed off most of most of the practitioners of this art. What is being practiced now is just 20-30% of the original art form. The rest is lost to history. However, it's good to know that some of the younger practitioners of this art are now learning and adapting techniques from newer martial arts like Krav Maga and incorporating it into Kalari. It will evolve into a full fledged fighting technique in the future.
This almost feels like a metaphor for India. Over millennia many tried cut us down and destroy our way of life but none succeeded. We evolved and adapted and made what was foreign as our own while at the same time remaining true to our roots.

Dharma did not build Shaolin Temple at all. Shaolin Temple was built during the China ,Northern Wei Dynasty. Before he came to China, Shaolin Temple already existed. He was the Shaolin Temple that was later arrived. This place was very suitable for practice.
At that time, many monks in the temple were Chinese Kung Fu. They were learning Kung Fu on weekdays. Because the temple was built in the mountains, some Kung Fu needed to resist wild tiger beasts. After that, these kung fu joined some boxing methods. It has developed into Shaolin Kung Fu .
Dharma did not participate in the establishment, and Dharma itself did not understand kung fu.
Dharma is just a monk. He has not established a lot of achievements for Chinese kung fu, and he died in the record that Dharma finally died of food poisoning. Buddhism and Buddhists have many lies and exaggerated content.

@@abcxyz- Martial arts exist since de war exists.
Tradicional martial arts are martial arts that has been preserved somehow (it depends on the region).
And yes, sometimes, some traditional martial arts took concepts, strategies and techniques from the closest martial cultures around.
But also many times the so called "oldest one" have taken much more from another empire or kingdom when this was really more powerfull that nowdays most of its movements cames from the other one.
Things are not so simple. And there is no Adam or Eve of martial arts.
Actually, I prefer the concept wu-shu than kung-fu because it englobes better the idea of martial art.

The shaolin monastery was built in 495 AD but records of martial arts being practiced in china predates it by a couple of hundred years, some of the earliest records go as far back as the 5th century BCE. There are indications that some of the first chinese students to join the shaolin monastery namely Huiguang, Senchou and Huike were previously military men and they probably taught the other monks. I used to believe the myth myself as a kid but as I got more into historical reaearch it became quite evident the tale was not true.

Starting with India, who thanks to colonization now have in many places running waterclosets, roads and modern technology. Not to forget simple fact of having English as state language which allow Indian cheap (not so much cheap today, though) laborers, like in IT field spread all over the world. And ending with Hong Kong which is today (still) takes first place in the world for life expectancy while adjacent to it China, which was not colonized by British, is on around 50 place.

I really hope that this martial form is revitalized further. More and more the martial scene is dominated by a few, easily recognized martial arts, and others are beginning to fade. Not that it's bad to practice Karate, Jujitsu, or Kenjitsu, however. I'm just saying that preserving the diversity in martial arts is important, if not for anything but understanding different philosophies on combat, as well as the history of each art. I personally practice Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA), which has gained a fair amount of resurgence in the past couple of decades, but I am of the opinion that martial arts of all cultures should be preserved to the best of human ability.
As such, keep going. For the sake of your history and your art.

Awesome. Just awesome. I really love learning martial arts from different areas of the world. It's such a shame that most of us probably can't learn this martial art since it's not as widespread as karate or boxing.

Why is it important which martial art was the first? The first martial art was throwing stones and swinging wooden clubs.

    • @c14ips17
      @c14ips17 7 років тому +17

throwing stones and etc do not comes under it and no one can categorise it as the same.If you want to know what are martial arts and how is different from throwing stones ; get your ass before a martial artist he will let you know. Don't ever looked down upon anything, they are meant for purpose unless stated otherwise

You are right of course. But Indians have lost almost everything and now just slaves to a western Democratic system. Thus they hold on to ancient draams. words such as "we were the first" are very critical to hold on to their pride. Let them say it. leave them alone.
But that was a nice one - throwing stone was first Martial Art. Indeed.

    • @c14ips17
      @c14ips17 7 років тому +5

+Viking VST conspicuously not. It is the symbol of parochialism that you people are expressing explicitly.
you can't out rightly say that Indians are the slaves to western democratic system. be respectful to any country. This is the era of globalization,,and an era of multipolar world. This multipolar system encompasses india also. That is why even USA is tilting towards india as a central location of "asia pivot"., let me breakdown everything .
india is not claiming it is better than any other country. its sphere of influence can be assessed through the following
      1. Cultural sphere- birth place of Buddhism, jainism.
its cusines are world famous. symbol of 'Track 2 ' diplomacy -yoga , which influenced the creation of International Yoga Day, everyone in the corner of the earth (except polar ice caps dominated arctic and antarctic geographical regions) practising yoga.
      Highly revered "upanishads",etc
2 . science domain - contribution of '0'. who else in the world first predicted it.
3.Art - magnificent Gandhara and madhura art forms, even British subjects when they came to india wondered about it..you can't find anywhere else in the ancient era the first essence of urbanization as MOHENJO DARO &HARAPPAN civilization
      4. technological sphere- the first ever country to successfully conquered to reach Mars through mars orbiter mission (mom)..With indigenous technology only also with low cost budget
      5. diplomatic sphere - influence in world trade organisation, pivot to asia, considerable say in the unsc etc,...
even more ,...I am not supporting india but to say that we can't disrespect anyone..give respect and take respect..there are so many hings to write , considering the limitations.Thank you very much

+MrTryAnotherOne why is it important when the first life originated? why is it important when the first homosapien came out? why is it important when exactly Big bang actually happened? why is it important to study when actually global warming started? ....dear friend , I am not against your question and I shall say this world is bound by the principles of CAUSE AND EFFECT. ..in every field..There are thousands of languages , numerous scripts, so also the dialects. so studies are around which perhaps the oldest language. It leads to the connections and diversity, it is completely no materialistic one... like wise there must be some connections between these art forms with some other..greater example you can take about classical dances of india and its influences. good luck. Thank you.
