    Hello. Relating to the return of the Adelaide 500 and the street circuit; I am the person who kickstarted the movement to save the event with an actual protest outside of SA Parliament House.
    The reason why I am so passionate about this event, is because I was diagnosed with Autism at age 5 and was also non-verbal. Essentially I wasn't supposed to do anything in life. Around the same time I was diagnosed, I went to the Adelaide 500 for the first time in 2005. I went behind the paddock to sitwas the place where I spoke my first full sentence at age 5 to anyone, that being Mark Skaife. I looked up at at him and my words to him were and I quote: "I'm gonna drive your car."
    I found my voice thanks to the Adelaide 500 and from that day, I knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life: Be involved in Motorsport.
    Because of this moment, my parents were committed to helping me achieve my dreams of being involved in the world of Motorsport. I got my first Go-Kart two years after my first Adelaide 500, and I began racing 3 years after that, which culminated with me racing against State and National Karting champions, Current SuperUte driver: Craig Dontas (Who I'm now friends with) and former Super2 driver: Dan Day. I even raced against Jack Doohan in the formative years of his career in karting, who as we all know is now competing in Formula 2.
    The 500 was also the best place for networking with some of the sport's most successful individuals and teams. I was at the forefront of Variety's promotional material when they were the official charity of the event in 2015, 10 years after my first trek to the street circuit. The 2015 weekend even saw me meet up with Ex-Toro Rosso driver turned Formula E Champion: Jean Eric Vergne. Three years prior, Variety got me a hotlap with Steven Richards in his Porsche Carrera Cup car at Mallala in the days following the 2012 event, while I was at that event. I was only 12 at the time, and I didn't even freak out once. Heck, I was commentating the whole time.
    Needless to say, when it was announced that the 500 was being cancelled, I was absolutely destroyed, I was going to kick the parliament doors in demanding answers. While that didn't actually happen I said to myself: "No, this isn't how the story of this circuit ends." And from that day, I was determined to help bring the race home. I began a movement to revive South Australia's greatest achievement in motorsport. In my opinion, it was a greater achievement than the Grand Prix. Not only that, but my movement was supported by the now current Premier of South Australia: Peter Malinauskas. Throughout the Save/Bring Back the Adelaide 500 events run by the Motoring community in SA as well as SA Labor, I got the opportunities to connect further with the South Australian born Supercar drivers, and have even made friends with them as well as some of their parents.
    I did all of this, because I want the new generation to have the same opportunities to flourish and succeed as I did. Thanks to the Adelaide 500, I went from a non-verbal five year old with Autism, to a 22 year old overachieving Engineering student at university with opportunities to finally realise my dreams of working with a Supercars team waiting in the wings, who just happens to have autism.
    Thank you for posting this video. The moments that this circuit has provided the world with, both big and small should be cherished by everyone. And its return deserves nothing less than the highest level of attention from motor racing community.

    Glad to see the Adelaide Le Mans getting a mention! My dad was in one of the support races for it (which was pretty cool in its own right, rookies were taught to race by experienced drivers and my dad was taught by Vern Schuppan of all people), but ever since going to watch him race and seeing McNish's crocodile car while I was there it's been my favourite race car livery of all time (and the reason I have 77 in my usernames lol).

      Actually as an aside, if anyone has the VHS of the full event highlights (not just the race, that exists online but the full highlights don't) could you please make a rip of it and post it somewhere! Our old VHS wore out many years ago from me watching it too much as a kid and I've never been able to find either the VHS or a rip of it since.

    As a South Australian who grew up watching the likes of Skaifey and Ambrose tearing up the streets of Adelaide, you've done an absolutely fantastic job with this video!
    You've fully captured every detail of the circuit itself and highlighted its history in a way that does it a lot of justice. I'm so glad the 500 is back, and that we have people like you to talk about this and other brilliant tracks, Rhys.

    Thank you for making this. I've never celebrated harder after an election than this year, and so happy they followed through. There's even a rumour that the Premier made a sneaky bid for the F1 contract! Even though it obviously didn't happen, God I appreciate the effort. We can never, ever lose this track!

    It has been forever since I have driven a game in anger around this street circuit, it was a track that will easily go in my top five all time favourite street circuits and one day, I'd love to see F1, for a lack of a better use of words, come home. Yes, Melbourne has now established itself as the home of F1 in Australia but it all started at Adelaide and one day, one day, I myself would love to see it come back

    Great video!
    Man, I wish they’d bring back the GP layout, or as close as possible to the GP layout (note that it would be pretty easy to resurrect Brewery Corner - there’s nothing there but grass). It was a tremendous circuit and I think the Supercars version loses some challenge.
    Plus Turn 8, even with some changes, is still a very dangerous corner, and replacing that challenge with the challenges of the GP circuit would improve safety.

    I went to the Adelaide GP from 86' till 90..it was simply the best viewing circuit any motoring spectator would love.
    Just a couple of my highlights...
    In the 86' I parked myself within the S's..where the F1'a had to slow down so you could see the "whites of the drivers eyes"...brilliant..
    Then in the last 2 years I parked my self in the first stand out of the Stag Hotel corner..the F1's would come into Stag in 2nd, get through the corner..straighten up and launch down the straight for all it was worth. A spectator could get down onto the fenceline..peer through the wire, really catch and smell the action. Brocky coming through Stag on 2 wheels hassled by Perkins and the rest of the pack was a highlight..
    I think it was in 88' the year when it rained..I was down on the fence line..with about 300 of my closest friends..and qualifying was just to happen.
    Then it rained...a couple of brief showers and all hell broke loose..
    Prost wanted to pull the pin and many of the other F1 drivers were on the fence.
    Then out came Senna...he tip toed through the lap a couple of times..the rain held off..he decided to crank it up. He was the only driver out on the track..and you could hear the car for miles as its' engine sound echoed off the surrounding building...this was going to be Senna giving it his all in the wet..
    He came out of Stag a fraction wide and slightly sideways but some how gathered the car up..straightened it and just send it.
    It was Senna at Monaco all over again..but here he was in Adelaide Australia muscling it around a street circuit..before my very eyes.
    You could see the "puffs" of flame come out of the exhaust pipes as it was overcast and the ambient light was dim...
    I counted those puffs..there was six of them..
    Senna had changed gear 6 times before his car reached under the first pedestrian overpass along that straight. That pedestrian overpass was located 200mtrs from the exit of Stag Corner..you have to remember..the drivers were changing gears "manually"..none of this "flappy paddle bullshite"...the three peddle foot dance and a short hand gear lever..and Senna was a master of it.
    Then on the Sunday..out came Fangio driving the Merc Silver Arrow he drove to his world championship during the early 50's..all with his leather helmet and flimsy driving suit..he was suppose to do a demonstration lap...but Fangio had other ideas.
    He pushed the Merc hard into Stag corner on those "cheese cutter tyres"..all the time wrestling that monster bloody wooden steering wheel as I saw his elbows stick out from the edges of the drivers cockpit. His head was cocked sideways as his neck muscles fought the G forces...Fangio was not mucking around this time....he was "on it". Then give the Merc its' head and barrelled down the straight with a roar from that beautiful supercharged straight eight...when he got back to the Pits...Fangio's time for a lap was about 8sec slower than the last F1 qualifier from the previous day..
    I was very sad when the F1's moved to Melbourne..
    I was hoping against hope that Victoria and SA could come together to share the cost and alternate the F1 championship between the racetracks..because it is the Australian GP after all.
    But is was not to be..Australian State politics..what can I say..
    I have never been to Albert Park..because Adelaide was the best F1 street track a motoring sport spectator could wish for.
    Albert Park doesn't come even close to Adelaide for "up and close" F1 action.
    Memories....

    What an epic video about Adelaide Street Circuit, great stuff! Everything covered. I hope that everyone who reminisces the f1 (or v8's) in adelaide watches this, it's gold. Do you live in Adelaide SouthPawRacer? I love how they revived it as well, but we need to get another category alongside the supercars, like s5000 or WEC, Asian lemans or even formula e. Kudos to Malinauskas for trying with f1 of all things. They need to get the non supercar fans there or else i'm worried attendance numbers will keep going down. But the fact they (government of the time) went from starting to sell the infrastructure and wanting to rip up permanent section, to now having event fully revived with 5 year deal is a blessing.

    I've never fully understood why street and road courses have never implemented SAFER barriers in corners like turn 8. Yes, it would be a slightly more intense logistical and monetary undertaking than the corners as they exist now, but it seems to me that a system like that would be a minimum safety requirement in this day and age.

    • @matgee8892
      @matgee8892 2 роки тому

      SAFER barriers will catch and stop a car which you really don't want in turn 8. Any cars following will have a car instantly stopped on the only racing line though the turn.

    • @moperry8399
      @moperry8399 2 роки тому

      @@matgee8892 SAFER barriers don't stop cars. You're thinking of either tire barriers or Tecpro barriers. SAFER barriers are what are typically around ovals, and recently, turn 14 at Zandvoort. SAFER barriers flex and return to their intended shape after an impact.

    • @matgee8892
      @matgee8892 2 роки тому

      @@moperry8399 Ah yes i forgot about the NASCAR/Indycar barriers. I was thinking of tech pro. I guess they are happy with the re-profiling but i agree it would be worthwhile to add extra protection if the technology is available. Supercars is the highest level motor sport in the country so it should be using the highest level safety tech available. Perhaps there is some reason SAFER wouldn't work but i dont know enough about the implementation to be sure.

    As an American, who has only been paying attention to Australian motorsport since 2015, I can easily say this is my second favorite Australian circuit. Bathurst is definitely #1 (and I think you can argue it’s #1 in the world) but Adelaide is an uncontested #2 for me.

    I'm glad Adelaide's back but I just wish that it being added back in to the Supercars calendar this year didn't come at the expense of Newcastle, which had already been postponed from being the opener thanks to Covid. I like the idea of Adelaide being the final round of the season but surely they could've added it in as a 14th round, there is space in November.
    On another note, I think it'd be cool to see a Formula E race held here.
    Favourite F1 moment in Adelaide: probably the controversial ones, i.e. Mansell's blowout in 1986 and Hill vs Schumacher in 1994 (both of which are bittersweet of course for a Briton such as myself). The maddest moment, definitely the entire 1991 race.
    Favourite Supercars moment in Adelaide: Scott McLaughlin vs Jamie Whincup for P2 on the final lap of the second race of the 2014 event.

    Probably better to have the Supercars at the end of the season. I used to work in nearby Rundle St and in March it was impossible to do anything at that time; you had the Fringe Festival in Rymill and Rundle Park, and literally next to it you had the Clipsal 500, two major events at the same time next to each other. Then you also had other festivals and so on (hence the term "Mad March").
