This video was fantastic. I have shared it in my sim racing community where Zandvoort is a firm favourite. Would love more vids like this in the future!
Holy crap Rhys! This video was fantastic I loved it and this definitely should be a new serious I love exploring the obscure race track history please keep telling these stories. Also this videos so well edited I hope your back for good man and that 2023 is treating you better my man.
Rhys, you've upped your game BIG TIME. I've generally really liked your content, but this? This is art. Of course, you'll upload anything you feel like, but man, this kind of content will surely make your subs fall in love. More, please? 😁 P.S.: Glad to see you back, mate. Hope everything goes well from here on.
the tarzan corner is named like that becouse a farmer named tarzan at first didn't want to sell his land at that corner but avantualy gave in on the condition that the corner would be named the tarzan corner
Man... I LOVED this little documentary, totally Zandvoort deserved one but no one dared before. My greatest props. And PLEASE!!! CONTINUE THIS "LEGENDARY CIRCUITS" DOCUS ON, I BEG YOU! ❤
Tarzan is called the way it is because in the early stages of building of the track, the owner of the part of land that covered turn 1's territory was owned by man who refused to give it up, no matter the price, his name was indeed, Tarzan. In the end he did give it up.
Actually, that's just one of a few potential explanations - that's the reason why I said it was unclear. this page has more info: www.circuitsofthepast.com/corner-names-zandvoort-circuit/
Awesome that you are back creating content! I often look back at how classic circuits have evolved over the years, and this fills that niche perfectly. I look forward to more like this. Brilliant job.
Outstanding and extremely enjoyable. I love circuit history like this, understanding how they came to be, what transformed them to what we have today, and what could have been. Spent so many hours reading up on these things, but this has brilliantly visualized the history of one of the most interesting tracks in the world. Hats off!
I don't usually comment on videos but I feel obliged to do it here for the sake of helping it get the visibility it deserves. Wonderful work, Rhys. The GEarth overlays in particular. Geweldig!
Thank you for sharing, I live 15 minutes away from it. 1993 was my first time on the track seeing Jos Verstappen win the Marlboro Masters. I didn't know untill now I was on the old Club circuit.
Banger vid, this formula of vid is definitely a winner, would love to see more in this vein. I'm just imagining all the tracks that'd make for a great video like this, Spa, Sebring, Fuji, Nurburgring, hell even street circuits, Monaco, Long Beach would both be great subjects. Anyways, well wishes and good vibes to you, your content is always a delight.
Superb video, really informative. I grew up about as close as possible you can live to this track right at the entrance (the nearest bungalow to the entry so even beating the hotel lol), I was at the track with my little quad bike nearly every day after school, either playing on my ''own'' tracks or helping out the event companies moving their karts from the pit buildings to the track on the paddock (which as a 10 year old was great for me and my friends, and it saved the employees at least 2 hours a day...and on top of it all we got to drive in the kart races very often whenever there was a kart or two left over if the group was too small!). However I was never very exposed to the proper history of the track and it's been very insightful. Loved it! The latest rescan for iRacing is just fantastic..the SF23 on this track is a workout and a half!
Wow that was brilliant. I always find it interesting how much the circuit has changed. This was probably one of the best video’s I have ever watched covering all the behind the scenes drama and decisions that lead to the changes. Definitely keep these coming. Maybe one on Interlagos in time for this year’s race?
First video I clicked searching for track history and it is exactly what I wanted, thanks! ) The end sequence with track layout through the years is great.
From personal experience driving the track earlier this year at an oldtimer event, the changes made to the track are so much fun. Hugenholtz especially you have to experience in real life how deep you fall away into the banking. Feels like a rollercoaster overall
Thanks, this was a great video to watch. Being Dutch, and having read the book written on the subject I'd say it matches with what I knew already, while also providing me with some extra information brought by for example the sim laps
What an epic return! Awesome production here. So much information, delivered in such an enjoyable way. Loved every second of it. Thank you for putting this together and sharing with us all.
Welcome back mate! Also would you consider doing like mini episodes with other racetracks where there isn't that much to talk about? Cheers from Austria
Congrats from a Dutch racing lover on the R&D and neutrality on all the stories you did here. Another one of those is that the material for the straight build during the war, sold as a parade part to the Germans, was the build of the Atlantikwall, completely destroying all the buildings on the seaside, providing rubble to build it. It is litterally Zandvoort's history buried there, and driven over daily. In combination with later laws to not build hotels and condo's at the seaside, make's Zandvoort that weird beach place with just a single hotel (The NH next to the track) at the beach itself.
I love every single second of your videos, I'm so happy you're able to upload again and I hope you will have a better time with it now. Also I would love to see the return of how to ruin a race track, I love those videos and your dry humour is brilliant in them. I also really enjoyed watching ATTC, loved watching you sim race and they were really entertaining videos. All the best man!
Great video, very well done in all areas and it's nice to see you back. I shared your concern when it was announced that F1 was returning, but was pretty relieved with what they did. It gets a bit of hate and people saying it's a bad track for racing, but I think it's a super fun track to drive. I have seen some fun races there, but I've also seen a fair share of not great races there... but I could say that about lots of tracks. I find it works best with grip cars since you don't have to worry about the aero wash. My AC league just raced here today so perfect timing.
All those years spent in the 90's looking at Zandvoort as a shadow of its former self must've been painful, but still it rose. Honestly, the high-speed, banked nature of the current layout strikes me as bringing the track's nature full circle too. What was once a fast dash through the sand dunes became a technical club circuit of basically half the length, which itself became larger and more flowing. And now, with the banking? Back to being one of the gnarliest tracks on the F1 calendar, I'd say.
Excellent video Southpaw Racer. Love this format of video. Hope that you continue to make more like it. It would be cool if you did a video on the history of Suzuka.
There's a book called De 120 van Max en Lewis (a fact book about F1) that states that the Tarzanbocht was named after a rowdy townsman with the nickname Tarzan
I just wished Williamson didn’t die out there, it truly was the downfall of the long lay-out, now there’s a golf course there. Though, the short lay-out is very good too. Also I drove there before the rework, so did my dad, we still need to go out there sometime and drive the new track. Also, I have never seen the Euro-layout (shortcuts at Slotemakers, which is the dip between Hugenholtz and Scheivlak) being used, it’s always there but blocked off. I think the truck-races use it, but they’re fast enough to use the full layout as well. Also, the designer, Hans Hugenholtz, also designed Suzuka, and I think Tsukuba took inspiration from Zandvoort turn 1, 2 and 3, if you watch one of the “Hot Version” races on Tsukuba, then watch Tarzan-Gerlach-Hugenholtz on the Zandvoort track, they are very similar, except Tsukuba is flat. 6:32 Edit: The Tarzan bocht name supposedly comes from a prototype layout that wanted to curve left, through the allotment gardens (is that how you say “Volkstuintjes” in English?), but there was resistance from a rather large chap, nicknamed Tarzan because of his tanned skin and rough hair. After which Alphen decided to turn right as a first corner. Again, sounds a bit like a legend. Edit 2: 14:25 Also known as the “Audi-S” I think because of DTM Edit 3: 15:24 There’s a lot of different names, but the Masters is also known as the Renault, the corner following that is Marlboro, then “Bocht Zonder Naam”-corner without name. I never knew the Audi-S/Hans Ernst was called the Nissan either, you learn something new don’t you
On the cancelled track then could've run 2 race at the same time, either splitting in the middle or inner as outer, would be really great to get a modder to pull it off
Very nice video. I'm saddened that they banked the final turn into the start/finish straight so much that the challenge of making the turn full throttle is now easy peasy.
Thanks for watching all! Hope you enjoyed.
I think I'm going somewhere I like a lot with this video. I want to do more in the same vein!
More of this would be excellent. a wonderful return!
This video was fantastic. I have shared it in my sim racing community where Zandvoort is a firm favourite. Would love more vids like this in the future!

Honestly ive watched all of these and the lets call it post credit bit with the overlay and music is a fantastic idea
It's really nice to see you well! I hope things are better!
Rhys man, I waited until I got home from the race track to watch this video, god I wish I didn't. I hope we've got you back for good now :)
I would love to see this for Suzuka, Fuji, Spa, Watkins Glen, Red Bull Ring, Imola, and Charade.
Rhys, you've upped your game BIG TIME. I've generally really liked your content, but this? This is art. Of course, you'll upload anything you feel like, but man, this kind of content will surely make your subs fall in love. More, please? 😁
P.S.: Glad to see you back, mate. Hope everything goes well from here on.
So interesting! The overlay and cut scenes at the end were great.
absolutely fantastic video Rhys, this was so good!
agree... thanks me dutch too... thanks for the beautiful vid!

Your attention to detail inediting and great ways of telling the story is why I subbed to this channel many a moon ago. Exquisitely done, Southpaw ❤
Between you and GPLaps, you two could make a *stunning* motorsport documentary using sim-racing to support the narrative!
Rhys raced in my rFactor league in like 2010 and at this point I consider it one of my greatest accomplishments
Great to see you back! I feel so good calling this (and Assen) my home track
It's also a beautiful track to visit as a spectator
I don't usually comment on videos but I feel obliged to do it here for the sake of helping it get the visibility it deserves. Wonderful work, Rhys. The GEarth overlays in particular. Geweldig!
Zandvoort is an amazing track to drive on and i'm glad there are alot of trackdays there

Awesome video Rhys! I'm really happy to call Zandvoort my home track.
Also your pronounciation of Scheivlak was spot-on
Great vid man, good to have you back. You should do a video about the gold coast street circuit. Those chicanes would make an interesting subject.
the way you made this video hits the spot just right
Wow that was brilliant. I always find it interesting how much the circuit has changed. This content is incredible. I think, with a better (or, perhaps closer) microphone, this could be some of the best stuff you can find on UA-cam.
What can I say fella "LOVE IT" definitely hope to see more of this type of deep dive into track history
Welcome back mate, your videos make me relax, keep up the good work, we're all glad you're ok
Glad you are back, hope everything in life is in a better place for you now.
Rhys, dude...this is outstanding! Glad you're back and looking forward to the next video.
I prefer your sarcastic / ironic side but "serious video" is also pretty OK. Nice to see you again.
Zandvoort is one of my favorite tracks with this current layout
Welcome back pal! Glad to see your making videos again :) hope all is well!
Thanks, this was a great video to watch.
Being Dutch, and having read the book written on the subject I'd say it matches with what I knew already, while also providing me with some extra information brought by for example the sim laps
That was fun to watch! Great editing and storytelling, would love to see this type of video about more circuits.
This is by far the best production in your channel, and it tops many other racing channels in YT, fantastic work!!
Fantastic return to video production, definitely looking forward to more like this in the future!
What an epic return! Awesome production here. So much information, delivered in such an enjoyable way. Loved every second of it. Thank you for putting this together and sharing with us all.

Nice ro see you back! I really hope you this into a series. I'd love to see this treatment done to Watkins Glen, Laguna Seca, and Fuji.
What a fantastic video! Loved the transitions and overlays. Narration always on point!
Great to see you back!
good to see you back, and with a track form my home country amazing. great video especially the editing this video.
Great video, very well done in all areas and it's nice to see you back.

This might be your best work to date! Love the format
I'm really loving the in depth content on this video. You can tell a lot of work was put into it. Awesome job
He back!
Awesome, informative video mate! Love learning about this history of racetracks.

amazing video, maybe your best yet - so glad you're back!
The 'Scheckter chicane' part should have been narrated as if it was a Super Serious Track Guide, with music also changing.
Goosh damn! It's gotta be a good day when you're treated to a new Southpaw video.
Excellent video Southpaw Racer. Love this format of video. Hope that you continue to make more like it. It would be cool if you did a video on the history of Suzuka.
Takes time off and comes back, smashing it out the park with possibly his best video 👍🏻 glad youre back!
Welcome back man, I've missed you :)
Great work, appreciate your effort getting this one done. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Alright 2 videos and you are my favorite youtube channel
Great to have you back Rhys!
this was amazing please make more of these. i rewatch the suzuka video every now and then
There's a book called De 120 van Max en Lewis (a fact book about F1) that states that the Tarzanbocht was named after a rowdy townsman with the nickname Tarzan
Awesome job man, glad to see you back!
lovely stuff, glad to have you back!
Thanks for making this comeback and showcasing one of the greats.
This was so good! I cannot wait to see more like it. I'm a massive nerd about circuit history as well.
I just wished Williamson didn’t die out there, it truly was the downfall of the long lay-out, now there’s a golf course there.
Though, the short lay-out is very good too.

Edit 2: 14:25 Also known as the “Audi-S” I think because of DTM

Im glad you are back!! But the sound quality looks worse than before. Big hug!
Amazing presentation and flawless storytelling. Excellent job!
Would still love to drive the original track. Just now you probably have to slow down through some living rooms and kitchens on the East loop.
what an awsome video, glad to see you are back.
I really enjoyed that and I will surely come back to watch more. Great work!
That was beautiful! thank you for this video.
We need more Super Serious Track Guides! Miami and Vegas perhaps?
Incredible work, Rhys!
Brilliant video!! It felt like a tv show in quality
10:55 makes the original Singapore chicane look like it actually belongs
Great video Rhys, well done!
Great video and even better production value.
..and today Zandvoort Circuit has begun to extend the Pit boxes for next year Grand Prix.
This was an amazing video, thank you!
Rhys is back :D
Amazing video
I have really been missing your videos
Keep up the great work 🙌
Good to have you back
Wow! Love your presentation style.
Also Arie Luyendyk Corner has SAFER barriers just like at Indy too.
Hugenholtz has them as well.
The end transition bits were great.
great to see you back, loved the vid!
Welcome back, another great video! Thanks 👍
Really good video! Love to hear this from my home track👌🏻
Happy to see u back
THE GOAT IS BACKKKKKKK!!!!!!!
nice to see you Rhys
That was a very nicely told story!
Very nice video. I'm saddened that they banked the final turn into the start/finish straight so much that the challenge of making the turn full throttle is now easy peasy.
the 87 layout proposal actually looks like a better layout for modern F1 in terms of racing if you get rid of the chicane in the last sector
What a video! Thanks man for this amazing job, keep pushing!
