Well, this never happens...somehow we made WAY more horsepower with our LS1 than we thought? In this episode, Tony Angelo and the Stay Tuned crew get to work packing a whole bunch of horsepower into an otherwise unknown stock LS1 engine to toss into Tony's new DIRT CHEAP C5 project. Somehow, this sucker made a ton more power than we all thought, and it's going to RIP!

@@StayTunedTA you should do the sike-clone black cherry though, with period maroon cloth seats and door cards. If you need any help with the interior or car audio, I would be glad to help.
@staytunedta drill a hole in the garden sprayer tank top and pull a valve stem through. No more pumping 🎉

I appreciate the level of "affordable" vs performance these builds are at. A bit more put into them than the Vice Grip level for performance, but you're not needing a second mortgage like some "lose the shop" places!
I was excited to find an affordable set of heads when he mentioned them. I immediately found then on summit for $650 each! I think affordable is still out of my price range 😂
I don't think derek worries about performance enough. That's a stupid way to say that. What I mean is, for me, he could splurge on hp sometimes and I wouldn't mind. I also wouldn't mind if he only did revivals on cars he was going to build.
@@jondanimal $650 per head is super cheap too hahahah
Derek did a three part series on the big block Chevel.
@@AaronSnyder-gx4ue I mean.. the Vice Grip Garage slogan is "Good Enough Performance"... so...
Tony, 3M has these roloc bristle disc (3M-18730) and they are amazing for removing old gasket or paint. Since they are made of plastic, they will not remove any metal. I just love them. They make a hard job so easy.
Man, this episode brings back memories. I bought a brand new 2000 Z28 that I swapped on LS6 head, cam, and intake. Hooker headers, Borla exhaust, and a BBK throttle body with Granatelli air sensor. Threw on 150 NOS kit for kicks. It was sick. I had just started my first job after college and my dad said, "how much money you got saved up?" as he held the Summit catalog in his hand. Best times ever. Lost my dad in 2003. Stuff like this hits had, but with good memories.
"Lucifer's Taint" sounds like the name of one of those Hot Sauce lollipops...

I'm over in the UK doing my first LS1 based build - I've got a similar spec cam and now I'm seriously considering getting a pair of those summit heads shipped over!! 490hp with just mild heads and cam is wild!
LS magic baby!!!!! Youll never want a old school distrubutor motor again…..EVER
@@trentdawg2832Wait... what? The LS1 is why you don't want an old school distributor? Its so good you won't want old tech anymore!? What!? The... Fuhh....k
My, pop just gave me his 04 5.3L Silverado so I can rob the engine for my 68 C10. I’m gonna go with the same setup after I freshen up the block with a 5.7 or 6.2 rotating assembly. Thanks for the much needed inspiration! Can’t wait to see the C6 rip! Keep up the great work Stay Tuned Team. You guys are The Best! Wish you much success!
Damn! We accidentally built a Gen 1 LS motor that has 500 Hp with a little bit of work, some new rod, cam and heads! That vet is going to another badass pizza garage racing team car! You guys are one bad crew! Also, welcome to the team to the new guy! I can't wait to see this 500 hp vette ripping!

Barb's boy looks just like him! Just, you know, younger. ❤
Yeah, and blonde! He's a great kid!
I think it just depends on WHO is doing the LS swap. When it comes to Tony I almost wanna see the swap more just to see his take on it , and how he approaches a “simple” build like this. 🔥 good stuff keep grinding
It's also fun to watch Tony break everything he touches.
@@JonStein-mu5ebtony is an OG in the American drift scene, nobody knows how to send it quite like they do
And that's why I love my LS1 , I've also been told 500 hp is about as much as the stock C5 power train can handle reliably , great job guys !
They can handle well over 500, lots of a&a supercharged vettes over 500
A lot of people hate on the C5 but it’s probably my favorite corvette.
They are great cars, and my kids love em, so that's an extra point!
I am with you. New ones look like a generic Euro sports car.
@@StayTunedTA and for the price that the C5’s are going for they are the best bang for your buck corvette.
@@k5wxp22 exactly…I saw one at a car show yesterday and 🤢 my wife works at a Chevy dealership and she was telling me about prices that they are currently going for are ridiculous…and of course the typical corvette owners are the only ones coming in to buy them
C5's are my favorite
Awesome build! Any idea when we may see the Aston Mustang again??
We have a clutch setup being made and just waiting to hear back on and ECU!
Hell yeah, can’t wait!
I was about to ask that too! I’m like did they forget about it?
Mr. Angelo, the way you treated that innocent child is honorable and respectful in my opinion. The Way a man treats innocence shows all you need to know about him. May God bless you and your family.
I keep seeing alot of vids lately about Bob Glidden. I was there watching him go in indy in person from 1979 thru 1985 ish. I am not a ford guy but admired what he was doing. He didnt eat pizza he ate midwest home cooked meals and turns out he could cook like no tomorrow his own self and when not racing loved to entertain and make meals.
I love all these fellers....Glidden, Johnson, Shepherd, Allen, Nicholson, Mannarino, i could go on and on from just the late 70s thru the 80s.
The Grump always heads this class and from PA. These names and more need to be remembered. I hope they all will.
Who did i forget?
Being from CA I would add the California Flash, Butch Leal.
Dandy Dick Landy from Cali too.
I know I'm forgetting a bunch more names...
I was getting the vibe of viral guy with the sbc engine stand revving the heck out of it while smoking when you were revving this haha
I love watching Tony assemble an LS with all hopped up parts, reminds me of the MT shows. Stay Tuned rocks!
Ive had 3 ls1's. they come out here in Australia in our Holden commodores from around years 2000/2004. great motor, very underrated. some people call them boat anchors hahaha. i threw a mild cam in one and ran a 12.9 with a stock converter. cant wait to see the corvette tear up. awesome video.
My favorite channel! I just installed a mild cam in my 2004 C5, 218/226, 587 lift, and stock 243 heads, kept stock exhaust…..420 crank hp. 70 hp jump, 4:10 gears, and she flat gets after it. It doesn’t take a lot to motivate these LS1 engines.
Thats a healthy setup guys, Id love to see you get back into sideways stuff the Vette seems right for the calling
Good to see someone rockin the DF thermoquad shirt sleeveless! I wrecked mine doing a cylinder change on a DC-6 with a Pratt R2800
Tony falling off the truck at the end!! Im Dead! 😂😂😂
46:31 foreshadowing….can’t lie to us😂😂
I'm going to suggest Tony's torque spec methodology as an operational efficiency improvement for our nuclear power maintenance project work.
Also all our ICBMs 😁 💀
Sounds legit 👍
This is a cool project, and quite timely, too. I browsed one of the local lots two days ago and came across a 2008 Trailblazer SS AWD for six grand! It had the 6-liter LS2 {395 bhp / 400 lb-ft} and 89k miles on the clock, along with a clean Carfax. This is the truck Road & Track quarter mile tested against a C6 'Vette sporting the same engine. The 'Vette got blown away, thanks to the AWD on the Trailblazer, which ran a 12.95 - the traction-limited 'Vette's best was a 13.68, IIRC. One of my co-workers has a 2007 Silverado SS AWD; after he put Corvette induction, a 'Vette chip in the ECU, and a pair of Hooker long-tube headers and a 3-inch exhaust on it, it was cranking out 475 horses - a cam and head swap like yours would have bumped things closer to 600!!
Once your ride is dialed in, it'd be a real hoot if you could arrange a friendly bracket race with Mr. Dulcich, who also has a hot C5. Just sayin'............
KUTGW!!!😎

The spark plugs in the exhaust are something we use to do back in the day. Have your rev limiter cut spark so fuel still goes into your exhaust and then while revving, you hit the button to turn on your spark plugs and you can throw fireballs.
Great job fellas. The pure joy when the number was first announced is a rare thing at the dyno. Bravo
Put a set of long tube headers and you'll pick up a bit on top (enough to hit 500) and a ton under the curve.

That bit at the end was perfect. Y'all built a killer engine for Not Much Money.
according to the google-box the head gasket is a Cometic MLS LS1/LS2/LS3/LS6 .051" MLS Cylinder Head Gasket
Thanks!!
The one that was in that motor originally looks like a garbage composite gasket!!! Wah wah wah😞😞😞
We appreciate you like crazy for the Saturday night uploads. Thanks,
Best thing i have found to clean aluminum head/block mating surface is a white rolock bristle disc. Avoids potential damage using a scraper and works pretty quick.
Thanks for the upload, guys. I appreciate it.
Funny story about Brad, he's my brother that I was never as good and responsible as. Brad didn't have 4 project cars in the yard at 17. But now that I'm 50 I believe I definitely had more fun.
Love the details on the LS build.... Great job Tony & Barb!
Love it! I never new just turning the crank center's the oil pump. I have had good luck pouring oil in the pump, while the block is upside down and turning the crank. Learn stuff every "Friday"! Buy the way I did end up getting the Town Car. Boost is needed for sure!!!! Keep up the great work guys!
Back in 2004 I was CRAZY about the new GTO, and my buddy worked at a Pontiac dealership and he told me to come test drive one. The 2004 GTO had the LS1 (the 350 HP engine) and the 2005 had the LS2 (400 HP). I will tell you that while it was OK, not CRAZY fast, but it handled the winding roads like you wouldn't believe. I was taking turns rated at 35 MPH at 115 MPH. I scared the hell out of my buddy, but that car was so planted in stock form and it didn't take alot of work to drive it. The one that I drove was a six speed manual and even the clutch felt nice, engaged easily, and wasn't overly heavy, but it only had about 80 miles on it. I tried to sling it around a u-turn and I heard someone yell, I said, "what'd he say?" My buddy said, "bro that's my boss! He's the GM!" He followed us back to the dealership and he screamed at my buddy and said, "I can't believe you would let him do that!" I jumped in and said that I didn't mean to do that, I hit the throttle and it kicked the rear end out and he told me to take the car back immediately. We got back and I acted like I was trying to purchase the car, but I was only like 21 or 22 back then and I had a fully modified 1996 GMC Jimmy SLE Santa Fe edition that was lowered on 22" Lexani rims with 10 TVs, 12-10" subwoofers, was painted with PPG Platinum Pearl White with a full body kit that had won best of show at NOPI Nationals, but it still had a basically stock 4.3 Vortec. I had always wanted a domestic muscle car though...
Horsepower and comedic levels are at 500! Awesome episode :)
I just built my LS1 as my first ever build. Got the Texas speed Head and cam package, PRC 225 as cast heads and a Torquer V2 cam paired with a Yank 3600ss converter. getting it tuned tomorrow and am so excited.
It's my birthday and another Friday upload, what could be better! Can't wait to watch guys 😁😁😁 thanks for the education!
I love this build brother!!!! I am using a Amazon garden sprayer to lube my Ls3 as well!!! A barbed fitting a piece of hose and 2 clamps. $25 and I can prime my engine!!!!! Hell no I ain't paying $200 for a oil primer setup!!! And I don't have a air compressor lol.
HellYeah Boys!! After hearing that motor on the dyno this morning, I’m all in on this project. Beer and a Slice Time! Ready to Stay Tuned 🤘🤘🔥🔥🔥
You and me both! Cheers Bro! It's gonna be weird with a Carb but I'm doing it.
@@StayTunedTAYeah, but it’ll look cool as hell and and be a 500 Hp daily driver. 🤘🍺🍕
I loved my 2000 C5. Factory it was rated at 345HP (later years were higher because they got the LS6 intake).
The heads, cam, and intake were definitely the bottle neck on the LS1.
You won in the first five minutes, but the DeCaprio line had me rolling hard! I get a lot of compliments and questions about my "Stay Tuned" black t-shirt. Keep that sucker in stock. It plays!
this was an awsome episode, loved the build and results, relates to all the garage builders out there !!!
I’ve been a fan for years buddy. I couldn’t help but lmao when you went for pizza. Wouldn’t be a family wholesome video without pizza edited in there somewhere. You need to brand your own pizza. Call it “We’re gonna lose the shop.”
I love the way you show us “you way”. Been a fan fur a long time and you always remind me. Great episode
What a wonderful episode. Just the type of content that is perfect for the audience. Love it TA!
Phrase of the video that sums it up well: MAKE POWER BIG!!!!!!!!! Nailed iit Tony!!!!!!
One of your better vids. It's nice to see you talking about the technical stuff. Plus saving those tables was the cherry-on-top.
I made 470 to the wheels in my 4th gen with a Thunder Racing T-REX cam and a TPiS 92mn ls6 intake (that's it) through a t56 and 12 bolt.
everyone loves the iron truck motors (i get it) but there is real magic in the true aluminum ls1s. legend has it they used actual pieces of frosty the snow man's pipe in the pencil that drafted the design.
Love how the tuners like this is wicked
I cant get enough of your contact. Great job guys
I appreciate the video. About to pull the trigger on an ls swap on an s-10 someone gave me. It's been about 18 years since I turn some serious wrenches. This and all your videos really break it down for a guy like me.
I enjoyed this episode. Keep it simple and fresh and I believe you'll go a long way.

That's always a plus!
Awesome video!! I got LQ4 I hope to get running soon. Hope that fall wasn't too back trying to get out of the way of the mortar going off. 😅
For priming LS engines I got a portable air tank from HF and adaptor to the oil port near the front of the engine to 4an. I pour 6 quarts in the tank and fill it with 80 psi. Flip the tank over and turn it on. Have to usually refill the tank air but I fill a new engine this way.
I bought a spotless C5 Z06 CE (1979/2025) with 40,000 miles on it. Paid a lot too. I always kick myself as I should have bought a sub-$10k C5 and built it the way I wanted to. But, I have it on coilovers, and upgraded brakes and full Sparcos with harnesses for the track. And I tell ya, the damn thing is absolutely unbelievable!
Absolutely hands down the best performance bargain out there, still! Yes C6's are coming up as the best for the $$$ but I'll take/keep my C5 Z06. Great build!
that was fun to watch. Were I a few decades younger I'd try that.. thanks guys! (the roll out of the truck bed was pretty funny)

Top of the UA-cam game right now brother! Ride the wave keep it up brother
Great video!!! One of the best and I'm ready to see which you like better (carb or efi). Plus it might influence my build so THANKS!
A C5 with a carb seems weird, but if it works, it works😁🤘 Party on, brother!
That's some seriously impressive numbers for a 25 year old LS1 with budget heads and cam. Some say the LS is THE BEST engine for a carb because of the ignition.
