- Step-by-step video tutorial on how to set up the new Silhouette Heat Pen in the Silhouette Studio software for a Curio 2, Cameo 5, or Portrait 4 (requires power adapter installed - included with the Portrait 4).
The setup is the same no matter which machine you using. The Silhouette Heat Pen is compatible with the Curio 2, Cameo 5, or Portrait 4 only.
Curio debris tray is recommended for use with the Silhouette Heat Pen and is not recommended to use on top of the electrostatic bed.

Looks great 😊
Thank you!
Very insightful video. Thank you!!
Thank you! You are welcome!
I don’t know why I’m watching as in don’t have any of these machines 😂 still interested to see all the new tools and how they work though.
Awesome as usual. Thanks
Yay! Thank you! You are welcome!
Superb video!!!
Thank you!
Thank you very much for this one! Just got my heat pens in and was wondering why the software wouldn't "send" to my Cameo 5!
You are welcome!
Hi and thank you for this video
This is great, thank you! To clarify, you said any foil that required heat, so Deco Foil should ultimately work correct?
Heat activated foils. Foils that do not work are ones like the laser foils, Minc machine foils, etc.
Would it be possible to foil on something that is longer than 12 inches? And just move/turn the material? I'd like to use a machine for bookbinding projects (foiling bookcloth) and the length would be about 40cm (16 inches).
The curio seems great because there is less risk of missalignment since you don't have to feed the mat into the machine
That would completely depend on you, the user, and getting it realigned and set up for it not to miss any spots & line up exactly. I would rank that up there with a highly advanced technique for an experienced user.
Thank you so much for this! I had been scouring all over to find a good tutorial on the heat pens and how to fill in shapes. The tip for the specialty tools was a GAME CHANGER! Helped with the Embossing Tools! But does your heat pen ever turn off automatically? Is there a timed limit? On the first try of my project, I didn't realize mine turned off prior to me sending the job. I was warming it up while I was setting up the settings used in your tutorial, and before I hit send, there was a note somewhere that said heat pen was ready. But right when I hit send, i noticed the red light on the pen was off. Needless to say, it didn't foil. I tried it a second time, and it had about a 6-min countdown. But after the countdown, the project still wasn't done, and then the red light on the pen shut off. So I ended up splitting the project into two parts to foil the other half. The 2nd time, the timer ran out again, but the light still stayed on and it finished the project.
First, forget the timer. It's rarely ever accurate, never has been, doubt it will be.
The pen should not turn off while in use. It mat have an autoshut off when not in use, but it should not turn off during use.
It does take about 3 minutes to heat up.
@@SilhouetteSecrets thank you! i'm not sure if i have a faulty heat pen? But to be safe, I broke down the project into different parts to avoid it turning off in the middle of run.
@@howdyem if you can get the behavior on video and if it is turning off during the process of foiling a project, please contact Silhouette Support with a detailed description and the video.
I just got my cameo 5 and today I set it up and tried a few things. (cutting out of cardstock and foiing)
After I removed the cardstock from the mat, I could see the cutlines from the designs I cut out in the mat and the design I foiled pulled the stickiness from the matt (I foiled a test "test" and where it said test it is visible on the matt because it is no longer sticky there... what did I do wrong? is the pressure of the blade/ heat pen too high?
You will always see the cut when you cut completely through an image. It shouldn't cut into the cutting mat, but you will see the design in the mat.
I've seen the adhesive with the foil pen being reported. I would try decreasing the pressure if you can and start there. If it doesn't help, then reach out to Silhouette support regarding it.
@SilhouetteSecrets thank you I will try less pressure with the heat pen. And that I'm not breaking my mat while cutting is a relief:)
But does the Cameo 5 work with the paper feeder? The most important part for a small business? :)
The AutoSheet Feeder?
@@SilhouetteSecrets Thats a fast reply! thank you! yes, im looking to buy the right plotter for small mass production, The Silhouette 5 is the newest, but i cant find anywhere if it supports the autosheet feeder, ive even called / emailed the official site 2 days ago, but so far no answer yet, its making me thing that the silhouette is over marketed and i need to buy over a 1k solution?
@@onewickedguy668 Have you used the AutoSheet feeder before?
The Auto Sheet Feeder will be compatible with the Cameo 5 in the near future. They have to make a new plate for it to connect to the machine and be the right distance and height. So right now, it will not work properly, but they are going to make it be compatible in the future.
After updating to Mac Sonoma 14.1 today neither my cameo 4 or my brand new curio 2 work…have you heard of an update for silhouette coming soon! I just started your online class for the curio and now this…ugh
Try reinstalling the Silhouette software. It should work. If it shows unknown connection- click it anyhow to select it.
Reinstalling did not work but I set up an old iMac with the updated software and it works.@@SilhouetteSecrets
Is there some tool for hot foil for Cameo 4?
Not made by Silhouette. Here is more on using a Foil Quill with a Silhouette machine - silhouette-secrets.com/2021/08/22/silhouette-cameo-4-beginner-foil-quill/
For some odd reason, I don't have a plus sign to update my settings for this. I wonder if there is a work around?
I don't understand. Unless your computer is hiding things on the Send tab, you should have the + sign to add a custom setting.
@@SilhouetteSecrets Yeah, Idk. I'm a software engineer, so using software like this has never been an issue for me until now. I feel like it may have been there before I updated my software this morning.
@@mikasmith9096 double check under the screen resolution that it's not set higher than 100.
@@SilhouetteSecrets got it to work this morning!
@mikasmith9096 great!
Does this work to add foil to sticker paper?
There's no reason why it wouldn't. It's paper, too. I just wouldn't use too much force.
That is a way too complicated process.
Sorry it's not easy enough for you. Once you have the custom setting, you can use it each time. There is no need to set it up every time you do it.
Is that pen actually $89⁉️😵💫🫨⁉️
Yes. It includes 2 tools - a fine tip powered tool and a wide tip powered tool. Plus 2 rolls of the foil and a roll of the washi tape.
The 2 pens have a power connector on the backside so they are cordless and powered by the machine when plugged in.
