As someone that never liked doing research 😅 I really appreciate all the hard work that you do to have such nuanced videos that are still very engaging!
It's unsurprising, yet inspiring and illuminating, to have my suspicions regarding your exhaustive process confirmed. I'm an insufferable pedant, highly opinionated and, for what it's worth, a guy old enough to just plain remember first-hand a lot of the matters you discuss. From the first video of yours I watched I was struck by the fact that there was not a single time that I asked of my computer screen, "But what about...?" Now that I've consumed hours and hours of your content, I don't even fleetingly think "But have you considered...?" during a viewing. I know that whatever it is, you've considered it, and if you've left out explicit acknowledgement of this fact it's probably because it wasn't all that important to begin with. You've dedicated real energy and research to aspects of the 70s and 80s that are not given the attention they deserve, specifically because of their direct relation and connection to the events of today. For this reason as much as any other, I'd actually characterize your work as important. People should know about the shit you talk about (and while I know it's easy for my old ass to say it wasn't that long ago, it is also simply true that it really wasn't... people should know this shit). For some time now when I dive into your stuff, I do so entirely trusting I'm in good hands. While you maybe haven't flipped my opinion on a matter in the style of so many pancakes, you've repeatedly broadened and deepened my perspective (while keeping my not always forgiving attention span occupied, amused, and entertained) both on the world in which I grew up and the one in which I'm living.
I've gone through about 1230 videos on how to make video essays, and this was, BY FAR, the most comprehensive and helpful - yet you managed to keep it concise. Thank you so much!
I have decided that this is going to be required watching for my AMH2020 class. It is so Perfect. The use of primary and secondary sources, the working toward a thesis goal, and the editing and revising are an amazing example of how history should be done. HORRAY. I knew I loved your videos for a reason. And I will make sure they click your link, not view a download. You deserve ALL the views.
Hey! I have two degrees in history and I’m a museum educator/education manager and it’s great to see someone sharing with the public how you do historical research for videos. Definitely your informal history and use of secondary sources is so admirable. It’s a lot of work - people should know quality historians and specifically public historians have to think critically and research like this. History isn’t just remembering facts. I became a Patreon last week and I would like to see some of your bibliographies. From one Black female historian to another - you did that 😌❤
As someone who enjoys making videos and commentary on history and pop culture! Thank you! I love your style and you do all this hard work so effortlessly, and putting us on to your process is gold! Also, I peep that Lady Gaga picture on your board
I would just like you to know that my college AFAM professor brought us to your video to watch to learn how to start making video essays. Please always know that what you do is important and is loved by so many people from all sides of the spectrum
Yassss! I minored in History, and I teach English Literature/Composition; this video makes me smile to see your study and outlines. Also! How awesome you write everything out! I still write my lesson plans on paper and with pen. I encourage my students to write everything down rather than just typing it out on their phones. Physical paper and boookkssss! Ugh love the smell of old books.
Love the snell of books (all 😅) and had such a happy time writing down my fics and poems and even just notes. Now I'm stuck to typing, ever since I lost my ability to write and read unfortunately. Good for you.
What I love about your videos is how well you contextualize. I think understanding not just what happened but why something happened in the time that it did is incredibly important. Nothing happens in a vacuum.
your process is so inspiring and admirable. the amount of work you put in is mindblowing and so motivating for me!! i wonder, would you ever be a professor or a traditional educator of some kind? your channel is such a stunning portfolio, thank you for sharing your process, i asked you about it a few months back! looking forward to what you do in the future♥️
I don't think I'll be going into traditional academia as an occupation, I hear horror stories from others and I hope to continue to make a big impact with my current degree. However, I may go out for my masters in my 30s. Not sure yet...
@@IntelexualMedia I'm a huge fan of your channel and I really hope that you do pursue your future goal of getting that Masters because we need more young ladies like you out here in this world to keep giving us hope and to keep us learning about wence we came and why would we need to keep pushing forward. History was also my favorite subject in school but I never thought to pursue it in college. I regret that now.
One of my favorite videos on the subject! Few people go through and compare and contrast the information that they do research. Its been a year out and i still come back to this video
I looove the aesthetic of your office!! And I really appreciate your thorough-ness. I only became interested in history about three years ago and have so much to catch up on. I love to see other people's research process, especially for video essays.
Can’t wait for the book! I’ve rewatched so many past videos because the questions that arise from watching your video, the take aways I can share, and the things I don’t expect at all are enticing and engaging. History needs storytellers like who aren’t afraid of the past and who have the courage to be hopeful for the future. Can’t wait for the book.
I have deeper respect and appreciation for what you do. Your videos are interesting. I have always felt the topics were daunting because of the sheer amount of information processed to create them, leading me to believe there was a small team behind them. Excellent content!
This sounds like so much tedious work, I feel like if I did all of these things for school I would have been an A + student but I just couldn't sit-down to focus like that. This process is so thorough, no wonder your final product is so good
With how detailed your process is and how much source reading you do, I'm honestly surprised at how high your output is. Keep up the good work! I'm always excited when you see you've uploaded.
This is where integrity comes from! 💞 Though, I shudder to think what your preparation for writing a tweet looks like! I think you’re making visual history textbooks that are engaging enough to be “read” from cover to cover. Thank you for breaking the myth that learning has to suck, and that teaching has to be a certain way. And of course thank you for the insight and attention you bring to important topics in each video.
This is why you're of my most favorite UA-camrs on here. You take integrity with your journaliam and you're very thorough, detailed, organized and you're not the kind to hurry and rush videos for views and likes! You have so much of my respect! ❤️
It’s one thing to have a passion for something and another thing to be able to garner energy, discipline and consistency from that passion to produce tangible work. This is beyond inspiring & We thank you for tremendous work!
I’m a music artist and and graduated with a Bachelor’s in Journalism and Mass Communications and recently there’s been so many topics in Hip-Hop culture I want to cover and document lately but didnt know the best way how until I thought of video essays so this is so beyond helpful. I LOVE your videos so much, THANK you so much!!!! 💕💕💕
Wtf this video is 6 months old and I didn't see it?! I'm saving and bookmarking this vid. I'd love to start writing history even remotely this good, but tbh I'm probably gonna use it to win pointless Facebook arguments.
The sheer amount of vast wealth that you pick up for your content is incredible! You’re the history teacher that tells it from every angle that keeps the class enjoyable and fun to learn in! I’m glad I’ve been able to stumble upon your page and I hope I could reach this level of researching for my content one day, this video is inspirational of that!
As someone that is softballing ideas about starting a channel on 80s through 2000s culture that I grew up with (and examining them as an adult) this helps HEAPS. Maybe I'll change the format I have in mind, but I learned something here that is invaluable to my endeavors. Thank you so much for taking the time to do this for us and to do it so thoroughly.
This video is literally so incredibly helpful. I'm currently working on writing a video essay for a class and I definitely needed alot of help figuring out how I would condense my sources and ideas into an easily digestible format without ruining the complexities of my arguments! So thanks!
Wow this video is great and so thorough. I have been wanting to know how video essayist make their videos. I kept thinking I could never do it because of all the time it took me and all the mistakes I made and how many changes I kept making. I thought UA-camrs did a bit of research and then turned on their camera, and made great videos. But to see how much time, effort, research and editing it takes for someone like you to make amazing videos , I feel motivated all over again to give video essays another try. Thank you for your time and your skills that you shared with us.
so inspiring. i love the amount of care and attention you put into your work. and i love that little archival file cabinet that you have. i don't make video essays but seeing your process inspires me to reach that level of care in my own art 🙏
thats the neat one, the other one in my office closet was not ready to be filmed because of all the stuff in there but It has even more files lol. Thank yu for watching
This is the general process I take in how I learn the most random things I come across something that interest me. You’re incredibly intelligent and we really appreciate the exhaustive and extensive research you do to put out the quality content that you do ❤
I’ve really come to respect your work. It’s very clear that you put in a level of research that the vast majority of people just don’t. Most people never delve into their topics all that deeply, and just say that they don’t have time to get into them further, which is endlessly frustrating for someone trying to learn more. And it sucks, because outside of college, it’s hard to find people who will give detailed and nuanced lessons on anything. Especially in blue collar spaces, where I work now, people want quick and easy answers to complex social problems, and don’t dare to think deeper. I studied history in college a few years ago, thinking I’d be a high school teacher, but never got the degree. As much as I enjoyed the things I’d learn, I’d get lost in the weeds doing the research and I’d have a really hard time following through on finishing a paper. But it gave me serious respect for people like you, who can commit to historical research and see the whole process through. And you’ve certainly helped me learn a lot about black America and view black folks differently. Being that I grew up overwhelmingly around Latinos in LA, there is a whole lot I wouldn’t even think to ask.
thank yiou so much for being a subscriber and for this thoughtful comment. And sadly it is very true that people want quick answers to complex problems-- and it ruins damned near everything.
damn!!! i knew you did alot but even this short video made me realise how much active reading and thinking you do. it makes me realise why I like your videos so much and often rewatch them. u have ur shit DOWN FR
@@IntelexualMedia thank you so much for your awesome videos and for reminding me that there's hope, even when the future seems bleak, because we've done this before. I wish you the best going into the new year.
This is SERIOUSLY valuable info! For anyone with a buzzing brain, I can see how useful this process is to turn the noise into smart creative work. Thank you so much for sharing!
You're gonna LOVE Colombia. i hope you make your way over to Barranquilla, over in the Caribbean coast. If you are anywhere near the municipality of Mahates (near Cartagena), definitely try and go to San Basilio de Palenque, the first free African town in the Americas, which remains sovereign and intact. Also, Colombian spanish is easily the easiest to understand. They annunciate every single letter and syllable with microscopic clarity (*i say all this as a Chilean, who pretty much no one can understand when we speak lol)
Hey this is making me even more excited! And yes I'm staying in Cartagena and we're going to Palenque! Thank you so much for watching... do you have any Colombian dishes you recommend?
@@IntelexualMedia You are about to fall completely head over heels in love with the food over there. You are gonna go completely wild over arepas, bandejas de paisa, patacones, ajiaco, carimañola, fritanga, aborrajados and cholados! These names may not mean much to you right now, but a day will come soon when you'll be mad for ever having lived a life where you didn't know what these all are 💖
Your process is so thorough and insightful. I've been wanting to start making video essays (specifically focused on queer history) and while your process seems daunting it's also incredibly inspiring.
I have a friend who loves history! She got her masters in the Netherlands. I need to send her your channel! She will become as obsessed as I am 😅 just discovered your channel this morning and I'm glued to the screen lol
As an essayist most professors and teachers love... I can't believe most don't go over how to do this!!! I'm good at writing essays--they come apart quickly if it's a research paper, since I don't quite know how to absorb information if I already have strong opinions and conclusions. Seriously, I was never even taught what kind of mindset I should have--especially when it has a deadline, so of course I'm more drawn to quick conclusions so I can finish the assignment, rather than being open in the research stage. I think I managed to get by so much because I am able to do this stuff with research, especially using what's found in a source to support my argument--but man, I hated research papers, and now it's effected the question of whether or not I want to make online content where people will be demanding sources. I think my biggest issue is still drawing a conclusion and then trying to find research that matches to my opinion/thesis rather than... you know, like you suggest, being more open and searching in this research stage--I think when I do that in a disorganized way, then I'm easily able to come up with arguments and opinions, since I'm just open to what I'm learning about instead of looking to draw conclusions. I'll try and take some of what was suggested here and apply it to my own projects now cuz yeah, I can speak out my ass all day, it's always better when I have sources to back me up!
thank you so much for posting this. i'm in the thick of my first video essay and the research/synthesizing portion is really kicking my ass. I feel like my voice is getting bogged down from giving definitions, quotes, etc. your dedication to asking questions at every stage, considering your courses, and looking at your drafts with fresh eyes is the platinum standard!!
Dang every since I’ve been watching your videos I’ve been fascinated by your charisma, charm and beauty also knowing that you love history like I do and are from where I from makes me feel like there is someone out their just like me gives me goosebumps! 🥰
Holy shit you are amazing. This is so extensive and so in-depth. My fav step is Re-Re-Re. Thank you so much for opening up and letting us peek into your process.
New fan here. Your work ethics are truly remarkable. This might sound weird but I've often been insecure about how much I love learning, collecting information, analysing concepts and events. I never minded being called a "nerd" but it made me rather shy about sharing my interests. Obviously I was also an idiot because I thought I had to look cool. I'm 26 today and because I have an intellectual job, I get by. But I still have the urge to learn outside my job and I struggle to let myself learn and create from knowledge. Watching you describe your process is truly freeing and it reminded me that I need no permission or legitimacy to pursue intellectual and creative stuff. It reminded that the only true legitimacy is in the value given and the honesty and integrity of the work behind it. Thank you for being a role model. PS : If you ever want to, would you please make a video on which systems you use to organize your notes and resources ? As in how you organize information in an optimal way, to be able to come back it later and re-use it or to edit it,etc.. Many thanks Love from France !
Aaaaand I bet 90% of the people asking your process won't put in the same amount of work. That's a lotta craftsmanship you're putting into these videos. Maybe getting a phd or writing a book is in your future? I haven't used it myself, but maybe chatGPT will help with some of the research, but it could be a slippery slope.
tysm for this! i'm starting college in a few weeks and i will be studying for my history degree as well. i'm sure i'll be coming back to this video a lot, ty for all the tips and for sharing your thought/work process!!!
I know the timeline doesn't work this way because I've legit memories of you as creator consistently cultivating content on twitch and yt livestreams like a digital garden's recent harvest with thr final product...... genuinely respect your process and the nutrition your content brings is always on time * *humbly takes notes* *🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
Thank you for sharing your process with us. I knew it was a lot of work. But when you enumerated every step, it made me appreciate your hard work even more. We need more people like you to vulgarize what's happening around us. Which hopefully will generate curiosity and interest in people who usually don't pay attention to those issues.
I went to Colombia earlier this year, Cartagena specifically it was one of the best times of my life. We will be going back. If you can please visit Palenque, I could see you doing an amazing video essay on the town. I hope you enjoy.
Thank you so much for making this video and for all that you do. I LOVE your content and how historically factual and interesting your videos are. Also, thanks for sharing your process
I love your methodology!!! You're always so thorough and I really appreciate how much you anchor your videos in their context. Thank you for the work you do as a public historian!!!!
You put alot of effort and research into your videos and it shows. I have learned things from yiur video and revisited some areas of history through your videos. Your a great content creator. One of few I keep coming back to.
Very cool and impressive. I've always had a passing interest in history and how it affects the way people treat others today. I really like that you use facts to formulate several possibilities for a question I find myself asking often. The question is "Why?" I am so grateful for finding your channel/s on UA-cam. Thank you
This is such a helpful video Lex, thank you so much! I've been wanting to get into making video essays but I've been struggling to develop an organised and effective workflow (whoo adhd) but seeing your process laid out so clearly is so incredibly helpful. I'm sure I'll revist this video multiple times. You're a huge inspiration 🖤

And you’ve certainly helped me learn a lot about black America and view black folks differently. Being that I grew up overwhelmingly around Latinos in LA, there is a whole lot I wouldn’t even think to ask.
thank yiou so much for being a subscriber and for this thoughtful comment. And sadly it is very true that people want quick answers to complex problems-- and it ruins damned near everything.
damn!!! i knew you did alot but even this short video made me realise how much active reading and thinking you do. it makes me realise why I like your videos so much and often rewatch them. u have ur shit DOWN FR
thank you for watching
@@IntelexualMedia thank you so much for your awesome videos and for reminding me that there's hope, even when the future seems bleak, because we've done this before. I wish you the best going into the new year.
I might be returning to uni soon and this is so so helpful! Thank you Lexi!
I always assumed that this must take so much work, but God it seems to pain staking! The effort u put in shines through! Love your content
This is SERIOUSLY valuable info! For anyone with a buzzing brain, I can see how useful this process is to turn the noise into smart creative work. Thank you so much for sharing!
this is so cool! thank you so much for sharing your process with us🌻
(your organization skills are a dream, as a chaotic person: it’s so beautiful.)
lol thanks for watching!
Just in time! I’m gonna need this for my upcoming semester
good luck next semester!
You’re seriously incredible!! Found u this year & I’ve been drinking your videos down.
Wow I knew it was a lot of work but I did not imagine this much. I’m so so so very appreciative of the work you do!
WOW - the sheer work you put in is amazinggg! As a content creator in the health space, this is really motivating, thank you!
I have a friend who loves history! She got her masters in the Netherlands. I need to send her your channel! She will become as obsessed as I am 😅 just discovered your channel this morning and I'm glued to the screen lol
i’m doing research to create my first video essay, and this is so incredibly helpful. thank you so much for all you do :))))
I'm so in awe of how thoroughly you research, it shows clearly in your content ofc but it's incredible seeing how in depth you go into!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
thank you so much for posting this. i'm in the thick of my first video essay and the research/synthesizing portion is really kicking my ass. I feel like my voice is getting bogged down from giving definitions, quotes, etc. your dedication to asking questions at every stage, considering your courses, and looking at your drafts with fresh eyes is the platinum standard!!
I think I’m in love 😍😍😍😍😍
Dang every since I’ve been watching your videos I’ve been fascinated by your charisma, charm and beauty also knowing that you love history like I do and are from where I from makes me feel like there is someone out their just like me gives me goosebumps! 🥰
This is why you are in my Top 5 best UA-camrs of all time! Your hard work shows!
Absolutely love your videos, I always learn something new from them! Thank you so much for all the time, effort, and research you put into it!
Ooh a book is coming for the 80s🤸🏾♀️🤸🏾♀️🤸🏾♀️ I need to up my tier in Patreon. Not trying to miss anything
thank you for being a patron and a subbie!
Holy shit you are amazing. This is so extensive and so in-depth. My fav step is Re-Re-Re. Thank you so much for opening up and letting us peek into your process.
This is INSANE 😍😍😍I'm so happy this content will live forever on the internet. Amazing work, thank you for sharing with us your process.
Oh, I can't wait!
Many thanks
Love from France !
All I can say is, your hard work shows *chef's kiss your content is thoroughly enjoyable. It's somehow SUCH a serotonin boost. Thank you!
This is awesome! I always wondered how the writing process worked for these information dense videos worked. Thank you!
lol i just noticed in your 1st draft at 3:27 you wrote [13000 MAX] but your final draft was 15k+ words 😆
I went to Colombia earlier this year, Cartagena specifically it was one of the best times of my life. We will be going back. If you can please visit Palenque, I could see you doing an amazing video essay on the town. I hope you enjoy.
Thank you for existing Lexual🙏🏾
Thank you so much for making this video and for all that you do. I LOVE your content and how historically factual and interesting your videos are. Also, thanks for sharing your process

Thanks for your thorough explanation! After years of being shy, I'm finally putting my voice out there and I want to take video essays for a ride.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! We need more of this in the modern world 😊
This work is so important and I'm extremely grateful for your work.

You put alot of effort and research into your videos and it shows. I have learned things from yiur video and revisited some areas of history through your videos. Your a great content creator. One of few I keep coming back to.
I love your videos, so this was a great watch!
This is the best video I have ever watched. So helpful. Thank you!!
This video is so soothing to watch and listen to. And extremely helpful to me for doing my own research and consuming news. Great video, as always 📹
Thank you so much for this video! This channel is everything I've been looking for on UA-cam!!! I wish you much success!

I needed this real bad. Thanks girl!
thank you for watching!
This is ELITE level stuff, I'm glad I've found your channel!
Very cool and impressive. I've always had a passing interest in history and how it affects the way people treat others today. I really like that you use facts to formulate several possibilities for a question I find myself asking often. The question is "Why?" I am so grateful for finding your channel/s on UA-cam. Thank you
Thank you for sharing your process. It was very insightful.
Ohhh some good tips, glad I followed this channel
This is such a helpful video Lex, thank you so much! I've been wanting to get into making video essays but I've been struggling to develop an organised and effective workflow (whoo adhd) but seeing your process laid out so clearly is so incredibly helpful. I'm sure I'll revist this video multiple times.
You're a huge inspiration 🖤
