The Airing of the NAMM Grievances

  • Our battle-weary hosts have returned from the scorched trenches and badge-strewn wastelands in Anaheim, California, and they’re ready to recount what they saw. Welcome to the NAMM 2024 airing of the grievances.
Zach and Rhett are coming at this from two different angles: Zach as a vendor with Mythos Pedals, and Rhett as an attendee and noted UA-camr-about-town. This year marked Zach’s first on the vendor side, an experience he calls “trial by fire on the show floor.” It ain’t cheap to showcase at NAMM, and Zach has some ideas for how to give participants more bang for their buck. The worst feeling in the world, after all, is dropping a mountain of cash to travel to the show, only to stand alone at your booth for four days. (By the way, three days might be a better fit.)
Rhett and Zach share their horror stories-from pushy salesmen in suits to awkward physical confrontations-and forecast some possible solutions before they turn to the auction of a Mark Knopfler guitar for an insane sum. Why are vintage guitar prices shooting up, and how are scalpers screwing up the gear market? Tune in for the juice.

It was the guitar he played ‘money for nothing’ and ‘brothers in arms’ on, the silliest thing was the estimate, not what it went for. There are many things like this in the world, art for instance that go for ridiculous money, so no reason to get annoyed about it.

I feel like having a separate "Media Room" or Hall where interviews and product demos can be scheduled in a recording friendly (i.e., less loud) situation would be beneficial. I also liked the idea of splitting the day between business and attendee. But having a CON vibe would be helpful for NAMM to fill in some of the gaps where attendee and booth numbers have dropped off.

Pretty spot on with the content creation at NAMM. It's hard and if you try to blitz and make tons of product demos and the quality isn't there (because it's hard to make quality content on the show floor) it can end up backfiring and hurting your channel. The fun stuff like the interviews are a much better use of NAMM for creators.

I've been to almost every NAMM since 1980 first as a buyer and, starting in 1986, as an exhibitor. It was "trade only" when I started. It's more like Disneyland now. It's always been the biggest money maker for NAMM with is the the Music Dealers' organization not the Music Manufacturers'. I understand that as the show got smaller and smaller booth pricing had to go up and they needed to generate revenue from the pubic but I don't have that kind of time and money to waste anymore.

I like me some NAMM content if it stands out. Outside of Premier, all the ones you mentioned were basically making use of the hive of great minds present. So if a booth has a pre-setup recording rig like Mythos it can be great to have a group of creators with different playing styles rapid fire through new pedal -of-the-day to really get the best idea of the ground it covers and it makes a great first point of contact for the listener. Or on the same compare and contrast kind of note, being able to go to all the amp booths and compare the influences and faves of each builder to get a good vibe check is really great for people without great big music shops to shop around in. So if the content is good it's worth pursuing, be it due to a well equipped creator or vendor. But it's just noise otherwise, people aren't that thirsty for NAMM content that they need a rehashing of each new product at nauseum. If anything it's about the hang for them too. They like to know that it's cool people making stuff for them to get excited over and feel a little like they're living it.

  • @brentporter9324
    @brentporter9324 3 місяці тому

The Namm discussion is really interesting. Guitar companies of all sizes have leaned really hard into 'influencer marketing' through UA-cam and Instagram, but there's no place for that at the show. The show is for business relationships, but the marketing has evolved outside of it. I get why the big players have moved out, it's because they don't need the merchant relationship building (they get it anyways), and the show doesn't facilitate modern marketing strategy. Big trade shows usually have a media day. It would make sense to evolve the definition of media to include influencers to some extent and help facilitate the social engagement, but as a parallel or even separate activity instead of just happening at the same time as the buyer/seller relationship. The whole Con aspect then gets into another thing entirely. Having a day for brands to develop relationships with UA-camrs and other content creators to facilitate marketing as a relationship just like merchant relationships seems like something that would be incredibly valuable to brands who don't have the savvy to drive it themselves.

NAMM Nashville is on so you've got a solid 4 months to get ready to do it all over again.
My feeling is that Nashville is possibly gonna blow up and be a way bigger event than anyone expected.
People are publishing a lot of content from Nashville and Austin; I think they should start up a competing festival with SXSW and have a tradeshow but a lot of stuff for people to do and see, again more of a festival/event vibe than just another tradeshow trying to stay relevant.
Remember the whole period of time when PAX started getting big - both E3 and CES were concerned as well as MWC (mobile world congress) for a while. They all survived but the landscape is far different than before what was basically an enthusiast group spawned from a seminal webcomic started dropping viral events that were not only attended but the people who did had to fight for the tickets as well as corporate sponsors competing for booth space.

Just 2 points… On namm things not getting covered or things being impossible to find coverage of is a little annoying like the new Rivoltas, but a lot of the this is what I found interesting days after Namm type videos tend to be more interesting when it’s not Premier Guitar or similar group (andertons, reverb, sonic state). On Charity Auctions, I really think anything sold for Charity should have an Asterisks when talked about because the charity aspect is going to raise the price of something flat out and has no bearing on the actual worth of something or prices for related things

Love you both… but the conversation about the auction is a bordering on obtuse. You’re givin these opinions, which I totally get, in front of 10’s of not hundreds of thousands of dollars of gear… Gear that the a big % of the average audience member is prolly never gonna get one of, let alone multiple… and that’s not even compared to what that money sitting semi-decoratively on your shelves could do for people struggling everywhere. I’m just as guilty as I am lucky enough to have some great gear too, but let’s be honest, we regularly use a fraction of what’s in our collections.
But just a couple out of 15 Novo’s, or gibsons, or Two Rocks, etc could feed, house a family, and send their kids to school for for a long, long time…
I 100% agree there’s a bright line where the amount being paid for an 83 LP is sickening… disgusting… but there’s a way in which some of this stuff is relative…
Seriously, love yall… just food for thought. In a way, we’re all collectors, just at different levels.

I agree 100% with what you were saying about the Dire Straits auction. You could buy a new tele for like 2k that performs the same as most any other tele. Just seems crazy when teles go for so much... The Suhr Pele is cool and I get why the 84 Les Paul and the Burst went for so much.. The burst is worth sooo much more than the 84 in my mind.... But it is all because of it being associated with a famous person... Rich guys remember that period in their life and want to reconnect with it.

As someone who makes some money playing guitar, but not my living, being able to watch NAMM videos is fun. Basically the inside scoop of what to expect over the next year for gear. That said, I think because of that is should have even less people allowed to go and then more of the people who do go could then produce better content for those not in attendance. For me consuming gear reviews usually starts with Premier or Andertons, and then I go seek out the players I more connect with and get their take on that gear. My biggest far away intrigue is the new Bad Cat, seems like that and the REVV stuff, basically tube amps that allow them to be run silent, are really pushing brands to think about how their product is used. Most of the gear that is purchased is never going to be on a stage in front of 10,000+ people, it's going to be played in bedrooms and bars. So for me, more access to better content would be ideal.

Speaking for a lot of vendors I think…and there’s a reason folks like PRS are asking if it’s worth it. I’ve heard a good many, both media and vendors say they can no longer justify the expense of NAMM, especially after this show. It’s why I haven’t gone, it’s why so many are not. NAMM continues to charge more while continuing to strip away at members benefits. And don’t forget room and board and freight. That’s just a few of many things. I’ve been trying to justify it, but quite honestly, most of us are better off doing things like the Dallas Guitar show or similar. At least there, vendor expense is an 8th of what NAMM charges. And these are shows where vendors are allowed to sell on the floor. Something NAMM won’t allow. It’s just my two cents anyway. I do certainly miss the hangs.

People that buy vintage guitar to resale need to realize that to resale a high price guitar you will probably have to consign it to one of the major vintage stores which will cost you 20% to start off with. Then you will need to be open to offers that the vintage store will probably convince you to try to take. Then there is this, I consigned a 56 , D-28 at the biggest store in Nashville a few miles up 8th. street. They said it needed a fret job, I said are you kidding? It did not need a fret job, not even close. Knowing I was from Hawaii and I probably wouldn't want t ship it back they said " Don't worry, you don't have to pay us for the fret job until it sells" So I bit the bullet. Guitar No.2 same vintage store, I bought a 1947 D-28 on line ( still, the most expensive guitar I had ever purchased) from them which they sold to me as "All Original" (Discussed and confirmed many times with them) Year went by and never really bonded with it. Took it back to them to sell on consignment and what did they say? This guitar has had a fret job. I said no because I had bought it from them and it was sold to me all original. "Silence". and alot of back pedaling at the most "honest" vintage guitar store in Nashville with it ending that sometimes mistakes are made and the fret job wouldn't effect the resale to someone. Probably true but my point is they sold it as "Everything was original" and it wasn't. Guitar 3, Same store, They did an appraisal on a "Parlor" guitar I found over here in Hawaii. No cracks, still playable. The owner of the store who I feel as well as you would probably feel, knows more about acoustic guitars than anyone in the world, said it was a 1885 to 1890 Washburn but said its value was only about 1,200.00. Something that old and playable is only worth $1,200.00? I say all of this because if your going to buy and resale vintage guitars you better be well educated on vintage guitars or you could really be in trouble. Buyer Beware ! I believe that 90% of the tone of a guitar is in the hands of the player. Vintage or new? I have had many vintage instruments. some good ,some bad. I love old things. The strange thing now is I have a 2022 PRS Studio guitar and I have never and I mean never, had so many people tell how good it sounds and plays effortlessly. Its crazy, I never heard the same about my 56 tele or my 56 strat. all though I think they sound great but they never leave the house which is a shame because in the end guitars are mean't to be played and not hang on my wall or the walls of all the Hard Rock Cafes.

Never forget that all the classic music was made on what were brand new guitars at the time. PLAyer like Hendrix et al, literally took new guitars from the shop to the studio. Don't be too surprised when a new guitar sounds and plays good.

    • @JohnnyFriendly
      @JohnnyFriendly 3 місяці тому

@@MrScrofulous Except new guitars then were not the same as new guitars now.
For starters, the woods came from forests which were hundreds of years old whereas today they mostly come from tree farms, max 20 years old.
Pickup materials too were different as were their construction. When Fender, for example, first started reissuing their classic models in the early 80s they found that they couldn't directly reconstruct the pickups as they wouldn't sound right due to the differences in the materials; they had to rely on ear to fine tune the tone. But this resulted in a slightly different sounding pickup and all manufacturers have this issue
Finally the guitars themselves were hand assembled unlike machine-assembled today.
All these things add up to make the guitars from the 50s and 60s different to their modern day counterparts.

Joe B has spent way more money on way more guitars he'll rarely play, but doesn't get the same shade from RS. Weird.

Aren't you sponsored by Premier Guitar? I enjoy watching good and shorter video's of the show since I didn't go. I don't subscribe to all channels so I don't see them all. I really miss the Nashville show. Its pretty much just guitar stuff.

I think Jim Irsay bought DG's black Strat. He travels around with a show of his music/memorabilia and then they put on a concert where Kenny Wayne Shepard plays it during Comfortably Numb.....with Tom Bukovac, Mike Mills, Kenny Aronoff etc....No good billionaires but at least that guitar still gets played i guess. Doubt anyone like Kenny Wayne Shepard will be playing that Money For Nothing guitar

This might be a stupid question (related to the Knopfler auction). How much does it affect the overall market when some nimrod overpays for a guitar that's nothing to write home about, beyond the provenance of it belonging to a celebrity? That has to skew used market prices beyond what we mere laymen can understand. I mean, to pay that much for an average guitar just because you can is kind of a d*ck move! Just my humble opinion.

Gone for twenty years. Saying this for 20 years. Split it up into two events. Trad NAMM Mon thru Wed dealers only. Then open to public, sell tickets (split revenue pool to exhibitors to defray costs) and promote to end users. World of Wheels. Get actual interest in the products. Concerts all day in the dome with exhibitors artists jams. It’s not hard.

Rhett, I totally agree with your guitar collector rant. Just the fact that anyone has the mad money to spend hundreds of thousands on a guitar highlights the absurd wealth inequality in our society. It's not healthy for a democratic society to have that disparity.

In regards to the auction, I think it's great that money went to charity. Just ridiculous that these guitars go for that much money. I almost guarantee NONE of those guitars will ever get played again, but that's not why they were purchased. They are going into someone's house as a piece in a glass box that says I bought this. If Knopfler had wanted these to be for players he would have sold them to players anonymously, the fact that they were sold this way speaks to the intended buyer.

well the used market seems to literally be tanking. I wouldn't be surprised if sales plummet for new gear here in the next couple years. So theyll either need to increase prices or cut them bigtime somehow which will come with a drastic decrease in quality. I could see quality dropping nearly as low as post recession after 2009.

I am not agreeing or disagreeing with this, but I think for the Knopfler guitar's, it needs to be more compared to movie props, or celebrity memorabilia, it almost has nothing to do with it as an instrument, which to me, feels sad.

I think the comment on scalpers is a bit Harsh.I think if you have the foresight to see what is going to dramatically jump in value and you make a purchase you have every right to sell it for what the market determines the value, it's not the fault of the seller that it's going for so much. It's The fault of the people that are buying the stuff that want it, no matter what.

NAMM should NOT be open to the public. If u are a nobody and just want to see the new gear and meet celebrities then you should have to go through the trouble of making a relationship with someone who can get u in. Is that really too much to ask? If we let everyone in the purpose of NAMM is null and void, too many people distracting the business.

31:00 I have to comment on Rhett’s awkward interaction with some rep from some big company who couldn’t read between the lines.
    1. It’s not rational to write off this company altogether because of the uncool behavior of one person. Collective blame makes no sense. Also, why limit your own opportunities? That’s silly.
    2. It sucks that sales rep guy was tone deaf and oblivious and awkward. But you didn’t help at all by not simply saying “hey I’m kind of having a moment here with an old friend - why don’t you email me about it because now isn’t a good time.” How hard is that?
    3. Rhett, my friend, you are a public figure sitting in a public space, ostensibly at a public event for industry networking - it’s pretty understandable that someone would think it’s okay to approach you in that setting. Humility will do wonders for your brand in moments like this. How lucky that anybody wants to talk to you at all? Respectfully…

I don’t even click on Namm videos to watch them anymore because they are indeed usually pretty much a wash. Poor audio, often times the sales rep describing a new product seems rushed. I would honestly rather watch a produced and edited product demo video whether it’s from a Content creator, like yourself, or even from the manufacturer themselves.

It's perfectly worth it for someone that is willing to pay for it. I mean none of the guitars that you will own will ever reach these astronomical prices unless either one of you write and play a Sultans of Swing or Money For Nothing. Sounds like you guys are trying to justify guitar pricing....they are just pieces of furniture wood.

Gear demos from the NAMM floor are the most pointless thing. Even from just a viewer standpoint it's a bad demo. Now stuff like Andertons walking around making fun of Ibanez names, if you get the right rep who'll play along, those are a fun watch...if they're from day 1 or 2. But trying to do a straight demo....stupid. NAMM floor to me is where you shoot B-roll for a recap podcast.
