Warren Haynes on the Art of the Sit-In

- On this episode of Dipped In Tone, Rhett and Zach chat with special guest Warren Haynes. The Gov’t Mule leader talks about the band’s latest, Peace… Like a River. This record of originals was recorded simultaneously with 2021’s Heavy Load Blues, in the same studio, using a completely different set of gear. “We setup all our normal Mule toys in the big room with the high ceiling, we setup a bunch of vintage gear, small amps, and old guitars … in the small room,” Haynes shares, as he details the differences in each rig and talks about his go-to blues rig, which includes vintage Gibson amps-“they were flying by the seat of their pants, a lot of it was experimental,” he says on why they’re some of his favorites-a Supro, Alessandro, and more, plus a slew of vintage guitars, including Danelectros and Gibsons. “The surprise factor was part of it,” Haynes says. In the course of talking amps, Haynes might have let the cat out of the bag about a special project.
Haynes is an ultimate jammer, and the trio discuss his strategies for sitting in with a band, as he’s has done time and again, including on Dave Matthews Band’s 2003 live album, The Central Park Concert-a favorite of Rhett’s. What does it take to be effective when sitting in? “A lot of times,” Haynes explains, “I’m just trying to find something that fits and stay out of everybody’s way.” Pragmatically, he later adds, “Really, the most important thing to remember is that the song’s gonna be fine without your part, so there’s no reason to feel like you have to do anything. When it comes time to solo, that’s a little bit of a different story.” He later reminisces about sitting in with Bob Dylan, and, during his time as a member of the Allmans, having Eric Clapton join the band onstage.

Warren Haynes is a national treasure 🇺🇸✌🏻🎸🎶
Warren & I have been friends for 35+ years! He’s one of the nicest people on the planet! I’m grateful to call him my friend and to be his friend! He’s an amazing musician!
Warren is great. I love everything he does. He's definitely underrated. I've introduced him to tons of people. I'm always amazed by the number of people I meet who have never heard of him.
I met the original Govt Mule lineup in 2000 when they opened for Steve Miller Band at the OKC Zoo. I had been obsessing over the Live With a Little Help record and was blown away to meet the guys and couldn’t believe how nice they were to me. They signed my tshirt and Warren even took time to answer questions I had about playing slide in open tuning. Been a lifelong fan ever since
this is great! warren haynes is so underrated. great guitar parts and solos and great songwriting. he doesnt get enough credit
Everything he plays makes me smile....been a Mule head since '91 even before Mule became a band....just returned from IE 14 and eagerly awaiting what the Mule has in store for '24
What a fantastic discussion! I really love Warren's viewpoint on so many facets of making music. Nice work boys!
I love Warren Haynes! I model a lot of my playing after him. What a great musician!
I remember seeing Gov Mule open up for Big Sugar in Edmonton, Alberta about 23 years ago… The tone of Warren’s Les Paul is still one of the best live Les Paul sounds I have ever heard. At the end of the show Warren got up with Big Sugar and did a 10 minute version of BTO’s Let It Ride. Awesome. 😎🎸👍
I met Warren after a show in 1993 when he was touring for Tales of Ordinary Madness record. He played a club that I had played many times before in the 1980’s in Ithaca NY. Beato’s old college town where he went to school and taught. The club had a good crowd but not packed as I don’t think they knew he was the Allman Brothers guitarist at the time. He was so nice to me and my future wife, took time to talk and signed a nice 8*10 photo for my wife and just gave it to her. Now days it would probably cost a $100 from some artists. His show was killer that night. I liked that album a lot. Much different than Mule music. Check it out if you haven’t.
An absolutely legendary guitarist. Saw Warren play a bunch when The Allman Brothers would play the Beacon. Warren has an amazing feel for how he plays.
Warren is incredible ❤
I’m beyond pumped to be seeing govt mule later this month!!!!
Being a bassist, I got to learn about Mr. Haynes’ playing at the time ‘The Deep End’ recordings came out, wich featured many of my favorite bassplayers celebrating the life and playing of the great Allen Woody.
Was it not Mike Gordon (bassist with Phish) that made the documentary that went with this project?
Since those albums (I think there were three (one live)), I really got to love Mr. Haynes’ playing and tone, and went back in time to check out everything he played on. He’s such a great artist!
🖖
Hes looking a lot lighter than before. Has Warren gotten into diet/ exercise?
His phrasing is unbelievable. His use of sonic playing is an art. Hes a guru of tone. He seems like such a nice guy too. Cant watch enough of Warren!
I’m really happy to have been friends with Warren for around 35 years. He’s just the most realest guy around!
i got the gig with DAC right after warren produced the live album. i thought it sounded like a dylan album. love warren.
Cortez the killer is my favorite song to jam along with, huge fan of Warren, great job guys
❤stellar and a perfect. I saw Warren and Mule in Seattle several years ago. Front row with my son.
I wish I could give this video 1,000 thumbs up!
Met him backstage at the Beacon when he was sitting in with the Black Crows, super nice.
I was Starstruck as Rhett. Really great, humble person
Sorry to comment again, but I did so before you talked about the content creation stuff at the very end…YES PLEASE to you guys making that video!!! I have always wanted to dip my toe in but I’m not really sure where to start on the production stuff, specifically stuff like syncing video and sound and stuff like that so I for one would LOVE that!!!
Wow, what an awesome interview!!!😮
Warren Haynes is absolutely a national treasure. Like you Rhett, I totally learned so much from his playing, also specifically that Dave album. I have also listened to that version of Cortez hundreds and hundreds of times and to now know how that came along…holy crap man!!! What a totally amazing guy!!! Great show again guys!!!
I am not big into biographies but i would certainly read Warrens if he had one. Great interview, but i think it's fairly easy cause he always has something interesting to say.
14:20 shocked to here that Charleston SC is no longer there! 😮
Cool to see someone step away from the Fendershallvox crowd for amps. Gibson made some cool amps back in the day, even recently (okay, 20 years ago): witness the goldtone GA-15 and 30, especially the 30 with a 12" and a 10" speaker in the same cab. One of my favorite amps ever was my old GA15RV, even though I couldn't keep the reverb healthy.
WOW! Such an insightful and engaging interview. Warren is a real journeyman of music, and a great curator/historian of blues/roots music. I especially loved his perspective on playing as a "guest" in an ensemble. What a fantastic musician & gentleman!
Good job Mythos! Make mine Mythos! Zach is a beast, the man never rests! 👏
Amazing stories and priceless advice. Another tip top episode, thanks to all involved!
Great episode - I could listen to Warren tell stories from the road for days on end.
Warren talks a lot of sense! Really enjoyed this one. Thanks for sharing🔥🔥🔥
I've seen Mule more times than any band and Warren a couple times doing other things. Cortez was always a go to jam when I actually did such things back in the day. So awesome you guys had him on.
I love that label maker! I have one and had one when I was a kid. I used it to label the BluesBreaker kit pedal I built. Made it look like a prototype or something.
Oh and Warren is a legend! Love everything I’ve heard him do. And what nice guy.
I was at a bunch of those Allman Brothers 2009 Beacon Theater shows with many special guests including the Clapton shows.Warren mentioned these shows are easily available but they actually are not. Many of the UA-cam videos were yanked but a few remain however there is footage from their live webcast they had via Moogis and fans hope one day they will be released. Over the top incredible in every way! I was also at the 2008 Gov't Mule Halloween show and blessed to be front row as well. The recording came out great and many friends including myself are in the film which adds something special for those of us who were there. Thanks for asking so many great questions. We love hearing from him!!
This was great! ❤
Shout out for the Sky Lark! That was a great moment!
It cracks me up that even someone as "heavy" as Billy Howerdel (who would be a great interview) uses an old Gibson amp as part of his sound.
Love Warren! See you in Charlotte next week! 🎸🎸
Warren is good at everything, excellent producer as well as a musician.
Great job guys. Thanks ☮️❤️🎸🥁🎶🍻
Best episode yet
Aloha and Mahalo! Warren was so cool.
Yesss! Warren 🤘
Thanks for sharing! Great episode. I’d love to see you guys go over the whole video/audio production process as discussed at the end of the episode. Take care guys!
Great episode! Really like the idea of a content creation episode, that would be unbelievably helpful.
Cool interview. Rhett totally touched something!
Hell yeah. Warren is def one of my all-time favorites and this was a great interview.
@@BillSams-zq3iu Hey thanks man, I’ll definitely keep that in mind. Just wanted to leave a positive comment on something I enjoyed. You don’t actually have to be that guy. Just keep scrolling. It’s not that hard.
Very interested in a "Gear for Video Content" vid. My iphone is not really cutting it anymore.
The demo deals are indeed great. I got almost $300 off my Quad Cortex because it has a nick on the chassis.
Fanboy Rhett is among us ! Love it
I've seen Bob Dylan more than any other major artist in my life and I've never had to pay for a ticket. But that's not the story here. The only concert I've ever walked out of was Bob Dylan at the Louisville Center for the Arts in 93 or 94. The band must not have gotten the solo memo becuase Bob would stop singing, a band member would begin to improvise from wherever Bob left off, and then Bob would start soloing over the musician and then they'd defer to him. It was the weirdest band vibe I've ever seen on a stage. Bob looked super cool though. Epic black leather pants. After we left, I also had tickets to see David Lee Roth at smaller venue that I'd originally expected to skip. It was pretty wild to see a leathered Dylan and spandexed Roth doing his karate kicks all all in the same night. It's good to know they worked the co-soloing strategy.
I had a Gibson Atlas that hurricane Wilma got, I miss it a lot.
Warren has the chops to play progressive bop right along with John McLaughlin & Santana.
If I had to pick a favorite guitarist.
U have good taste in guests .
I have to say, being a bit older myself and looking up to so many great guitarists of my generation and the generations of the past, the "guitar heroes" of today(& yesterday) are reaching the end of their time in this life, Eric Clapton, Eric Johnson, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Jimmie Page, Joe Walsh etc, are all in their sixties and up, with the loss of so many great guitarists like Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen, Jeff Beck, Randy Rhoads, Duane Allman, Stevie Ray Vaughn and so on, Joe Bonamassa and John Mayer, the young bucks of the bunch, are in their mid forties. One has to wonder, who are the young guitar heroes of tomorrow?
Oh they're out there alright. I don't think there's any need to worry. Derek Trucks springs to mind and Marcus King, Damon Fowler, Matteo Mancuso and many more.
@@BillSams-zq3iuTrue, the years go by. He's actually 44 now, hard to believe. How about Chris Buck then, he's young and a great player😊

Guys. Some of us are totally lost with the start of this VID. What are you trying to release?
Having been in the tech business for 40+ years, I wish I had a dollar for everytime I said "But NOTHING changed. I worked yesterday".
An embossing label maker!
I had a Gibson Vanguard in 1967. It got lost in a tornado.
Saw Warren and Govt. Mule in Dallas last week: excellent show, despite the 100-degree plus heat. Sadly the opening act, JBLZE, was hamstrung by a horrible mix: the kick drum was so hot as to nearly obscure every other instrument and voice on stage. Warren and company, however, took care of bidness.
Hey Rhett… that’s called Picnic…. Problem in chair, not in computer 😂😂😂
For some reason I never see Warren going the modeling route. Let’s move some air!
Cortez the killer. didn't realize they didn't really practice this. dang.
❤😂❤😂🎉🎉😊😊😊
Rhett Shull has got 1 hell of a payback coming!
If I become a patreon member, will you introduce me to Warren Haynes? LOL
Smart of Gibson to finally realize their hidden strength in amps. When will Vox get serious about some reissues?
A comment for the UA-cam metrics.
Could get more clicks if you titled it "Warren Haynes hates Polyphia?"
It is because you didn’t do anything that it broke
Gimme Shullter Studios
Rhett Set Radio Studios
Plan B Studios (I guess there is a plan b, open a studio)
did you unplug it and plug it back in???? kidding but not...
“…And when he fell, it was like a lightning bolt…..” right Zach Broyles??? Hell yeah, freemasonery!!!…..🤢🤮💩
It is SO disengenuine to see five dozen YT chanels ALL pretend to be astounded & delighted with EVERY F guitar item that comes out!!! NAUSEATING!
