20 years Canon and over 10 years full frame. Raw only and never touched the jpgs. Had all the heavy zooms and fast primes. Sold all and got the X-T5 with 18/1.4 and 33/1.4 So much lighter and image quality and shooting experience is great. Love the dials and manual control.
I took the bullet and went full fuji this year. I’m blown away how fun it is to use the XT5 it moves me to get that better photo. It’s been a scary transition since I was with Sony for so long. But I got the Xh2S and two XT5’s love it so far.
@@daniel-oakes not at all , don’t let a little grain bother you. My biggest gripe nowadays especially with UA-camrs is that they mostly get their gear sent to them for free so their obligations are 50/50. Things get overhyped between full frame and apsc. Like I mentioned it was a scary transition since I’ve been with Sony for over 10 years but I needed a change and this was the right move for me . Fuji is a very capable system.
Swapped from Nikon to Fuji this past week before going out on a hiking and camping trip this past weekend and I have 0 regrets so far, picked up a X-T-30ii which is light and compact with a ton of features. It’s been INCREDIBLE and super fun as well!
To be honest, you can also be minimal with the Sony A7iv using compact prime and zoom lenses. You don't have to buy a whole new system to achieve that.
I own the Sony A7III and a lot of decent lenses but I bought the Fuji X-T5 and it somehow reminds me to my beginnings of photography in the early 90s with the Canon AE just because of the filmsimulations and the small and light setup!
I love your shots! Your portraiture and environmental shots are some of the best I have seen since getting into photography! I am going to be deep diving into your videos over the next weeks.
The 27mm & 75mm Viltrox lenses are absolutely phenomenal. Both are sharp wide open & are extremely well built. They are large lenses on the x mount system. I would prefer an additional battery grip for the XT-5, although the larger battery capacity is most welcome. (The grip helps with using longer lenses & shooting in the portrait orientation.) Hope that you enjoy your XT-5. Safe travels.
Interesting and organic video about the X-T5. Fresh, minimal and professional. Btw, Larni is heavenly. The gorgeous model + a great camera + a passionately creative photographer. Great !
hey i might be mistaking but I believe if you click the joystick to change the focus point location and then use the dial on the back right you can change the focus box size
Started with a Canon AE1 Program 40 years ago then Nikon shooting Kodachrome 64, then Canon FF with all the L zooms and primes. Sold it all after buying a X100T and X-T2. Now shooting with the X-T5. Fun to shoot with, great quality, great colours and, being so light, goes everywhere with me.
Just started my journey with the Fujifilm xh2s. Almost ordered the xt5 but went for the x100VI for portability and small family events. Looks absolutely lovely though and hoping to add it to the collection

I LOVED the XT3 with the 15-55mm. I loved it esp for video since it had IS. I did love the 16-55 F2.8 and the 55-150mm I think it was f2.8 but heavy and cumbersome in certain situations.
this is the video to push me over the edge and pick up this camera and some lenses. been looking for something to play with and enjoy for pleasure vs work and carry around often and re-inspire
Me too, I currently shoot Sony full frame but I recently got a Fujifilm X-T5 as well as the new X100VI and I am making a little kit going of a few small and light primes maybe one small zoom.
That 27 1.2 and its sibling 75 1.2 are such great lenses, sharp wide open and has a certain quality of it. I love it. I pretty much sold every other lens i had as i wasn't using them anymore. The 13mm 1.4 that used to be the best by viltrox now seems due an upgrade to these quality levels. The weight is a bit on the heavier side, but not a problem for me. I was used to canon 5D IV before, with zoom and flash for day long events. now i carry 2 fujis (X-T3 and X-T5) with these 2 lenses and flash if required and it doesn't bother me.
I would recommend back button AF, somehow disconnecting the AF and shutter press seems to help Fuji AF issues IME. And use daylight white balance, afterall the film simulations are simulations of daylight balanced film. I also use Sony fullframe which being old school I sort of think of as my medium format and Fuji as my 35mm :-)
It's a good feeling to find something that just works for you and hopefully gives some relief from GAS. I feel the same way about the a6700, nearly perfect for all personal use (would still get Sony FF for paid client work). Finally a Sony camera with truly nice colors with Fuji-like skintones in JPEG -- much nicer than the A7III/IV (hope a7V gets the new color science). Pretty sure DR200 isn't taking two exposures. It's underexposing one shot and then increasing the exposure in post to preserve highlights (at the cost of more noise in the shadows)

Regarding the flicker, i have experienced the same thing on my xt4 with the viltrox 75mm pro. A software update fixed the issue. Although i cannot remember if its the lens or camera update that fixed the issue 😅
not sure if mentioned but at the end of video where it had trouble auto focusing, maybe since the eye tracking was on it didnt lock on to the wall or the plant?
Great video!! Thanks for your input and showing your beautiful images. Something about those Fuji images… like there a bit more organic 🤷♂️ I know it sounds corny lol wish I could put my finger on it a bit better. Cheers!
I def get that flicker and it totally threw me off at first as well. The irony is that for video my sony's did the same thing but no flicker, exposure is just always off. The screen consistently looks more exposed than it really is even with log assist mode and the exposure meter consistently is wrong. Every system has their quirks unfortunately. At least the Fuji makes shooting more fun.
Yeah the old gamma assist for video on Sonys was a pain, I’m super grateful that they now have been all updated with LUT assist, way better important if a good slog3 LUT into the camera
You talked about simple, everyday photo desires, but them filled the video with professional, artistic work. Thank you. But not exactly "everyday work".
I got the same flickering, but only with Viltrox pro 75 mm f1.2. Quite annoying. My 27 mm f2.8 doesn’t have that problem. Although I’ve noticed that if you set all manual that problem disappear.
Do you have any suggestions for beginners? I really like your videos and just picked up an XT-5. Do you have a beginner lens or resources you'd recommend to learn to create photos like yours?
Yes I do! I reckon get the 23mm f2 prime to start, then you can find out if you want to shoot wider or tighter as it’s a 35mm fullframe, meaning you get a great versatile field of view. Or the 18-55 is amazing, but try not to zoom to much and go out and stick to one focal length for a day, so one day shoot at 18mm then the next day shoot at 35mm and see what you like better.
Great video! Given you don’t use the dials, did you consider going with the X-H2 in the past. Also maybe I’m misunderstanding but you can change the size of the focus box/point. Just move your joystick once and then use your rear dial to adjust the size.
Yeah the x-h2 is pretty big aye, like a full frame body. In that case I would just use my Sony ff bodies. Yeah you can change the box for single shot but not for the wide tracking box
Yeah I sell it 😅 linked in the description! I am working on a flog2 LUT pack, but if you watch my xt5 vs a6700 vs r7 video there is a free flog2 lut that I made
Great video :) I have been thinking of buying this one for me but not sure yet, mostly because of the autofocus (many people say it is not good). What lenses would you recommend for someone that is debuting in photography and likes landscapes but also close up and portrait photography? Great tips, thanks !
Good choice! The auto focus is fine for landscapes and portraits, I made a seperate video about the XT5 for portraits so check that out! I think the best lens for landscape is the 18-55 and maybe a telephoto zoom like the 70-300. These are all super affordable but amazing For portraits I’ve been loving the Fuji 18mm f1.4, the viltrox 27mm f1.2 and the viltrox 56mm f1.7 I think the viltrox 27mm is a great place to start for portraits if you only want the one lens
Love the lens combo, I currently have the Viltrox 27 (a beast but a beast to lug around too), Sigma 18-50 instead of the kit lens, and looking to obtain that Fuji 27 pancake… or Ttartisans pancake (would you recommend the latter?)
Yeah epic, the viltrox is massive but it’s my main portrait lens. Maybe consider the Fuji 18mm f2 or the f1.4 version but I think the viltrox and a the sigma zoom is all you really need I did just make a video on this topic 😊
Nah I just had a feeling I needed to do it, it’s really easy with the USBC port. I actually didn’t get sent the 27mm f1.2 from viltrox, I traded it for a camera bag
@@gerardneedham OK I also have a Sony A74 but I'm looking for a more compact configuration for everyday use, maybe a future XT50? your videos are excellent, always a pleasure to watch
This is a great video. It may be different for you (or other professionals) but if you had to pick one system to begin on (for photo and video) which would you choose? I feel like Sony is a great system, and the Fuji is a great play thing. I am in the process of picking my first system and can't really decide between fuji/sony and even FF/APSC. I am leaning toward an older FF body to begin with and start learning, but maybe pick up an older fuji down the line to play about with
Yeah if you want to do this as a job I would recommend Sony FF, purely for the fact it’s the king for hybrid shooters with the autofocus and colours for photo and video. Sony also have the best lens selection as you can pick up some amazing 3rd party lenses on a budget. I know people who use Fuji for work, h2 and the H2s but for me, it’s the lack of really amazing lenses. Sure they have a few but they are no G master or canon L series. Also I work a lot with zooms, and a f2.8 APSC zoom is really like a f4 in full frame.
@@gerardneedham thanks for the reply, very helpful. Have you had experience with the a7iii? Used prices are very attractive at the minute where I’m from
I'm seriously considering the XT 5. I'm an amateur doing general photography: landscape, nature, animals, street, grandchildren sports, family events. I've considered the A7iv, but like the size and style of Fugi. Have you found the XT5 to be insufficient in auto focus for general purposes? Or are most of their issues now resolved?
Great video mate! Appreciate the effort. I was wondering if you considered picking up the Nikon ZF? I just got the X-T5 w/ 16-80 lens for a re-sale, looking for a ZF now
They are all great, I love the body design of the XT5, I was going to buy the XS20 for the inbuilt flash, but the 40mp sensor and the design of the XT5 was the reason
Invest in a cheapest body, but buy a good lens. XT-5 might have a price drop in couple of years, then it'll make sense to buy it. Don't invest in intermediate bodies.
Hey, i dont actually use the JPEGs and I edit all my photos, but I just shoot RAW + JPEG to see the film simulation while shooting . But I’ve been using Astia/soft
Aren't you missing the 2-3 extra stops of dynamic range compared to Sony? Every image I see of the Viltrox lenses always feels flat, as though it has zero 3d pop/microcontrast :(
@@gerardneedham I'm so on the fence on considering getting into Fuji (alongside Sony). The old-style analog dials, other than the color science, are so tempting
never. Gear is just gear - the picture happens just about 20cm (if you are a human) behind the sensor. Another thing I've learned wandering around with my crop sensor camera or full frame is the place, light and what's around you rather than brand, megapixels etc.
I do mate, shoot as much as me and when your hobby turns into your job you get bored very very fast, same thing every day with the Sony and I felt like switching it up and I feel great and I enjoy my hobby again!
No question Fuji auto focus and tracking is absolutely the worse, dead last place. If I had to start all over, definitely would be Canon. Yes no third party lens but their optics are superb. Nikon is only good with z8 or 9, unfortunately they don’t have reasonable bodies with superb tracking like Canon does. Not every Sony is good at tracking depends on which model …..the ability to track fast small birds is really the gold standard for judging. On humans you can almost get away with Fuji which doesn’t say much…..but when it comes to user experience of course Fuji is on top…as long as you’re not swearing too much about tracking.
Yeah canon and Sony are the king and queen, I don’t know way canon doesn’t have a click to track box like Sony and Fuji tho. It’s annoying to have to click the screen, maybe it’s deep in the menu but I can’t find it or my friends who shoot canon don’t know about it

I just want a versatile camera for video and stills that’s FUN to use. I’m in the market.
Fuji has you covered, but the XT5 isn’t amazing for video the H2S is definitely a better video camera
not sure if mentioned but at the end of video where it had trouble auto focusing, maybe since the eye tracking was on it didnt lock on to the wall or the plant?
No that’s shouldn’t matter
Great video!! Thanks for your input and showing your beautiful images. Something about those Fuji images… like there a bit more organic 🤷♂️ I know it sounds corny lol wish I could put my finger on it a bit better. Cheers!
Yeah there is something about the Fuji raw files, they edit so well
Try the Sigma 18-50 F2.8 to replace the kit lens, it’s small and amazing and perfect for travel
Yeah I thought about that but prefer the Fujifilm version because of the aperture ring and it looks better 😅
The X-T5 really calls for an aperture ring. But for me that Sigma looks better to my eye. Especially on the X-H2s.
The XT5 is great but I wished that they kept the XT3 dimensions. I got a Smallrig L grip for my XT5 so it feels much better now.
Oh yeah week at least you can make it bigger if you want, I love the form factor of the XT5
Your new friend is amazing ❤
So many comments like this ahahah
You have been in Niterói!!! (2:37). I'm from Niterói :D
Tudo bem, amor rio 🕺
You talked about simple, everyday photo desires, but them filled the video with professional, artistic work. Thank you. But not exactly "everyday work".
I’m not too sure if I should take this as a compliment but yeah that’s just me chilling and taking some photos and videos 😅
@@gerardneedham It was high praise. TY!
❤this is my camera 🎉
Such a gem
I got the same flickering, but only with Viltrox pro 75 mm f1.2. Quite annoying. My 27 mm f2.8 doesn’t have that problem. Although I’ve noticed that if you set all manual that problem disappear.
It’s the autofocus! I think this lens would work better on sony
Random but what sling / bag are you using 2:20 ? Great video.
Hey it’s the Bellroy 10l and there is a link in my website under gear and in the description also
I’m struggling with choosing as well 😢
XT5 brother
love your shots! are you using any film simulation or just shoot in manual and lightroom to edit?
I edit the RAW files in Lightroom and I shoot aperture priority
Can I ask why you didn't go with the XH2 ? It doesn't seem to have any of the drawbacks of the XT5
I wanted the smaller form factor
I got my own XT5 but I guess my setting is not as good! It take awhile for the image to be saved thereby missing the next shot.
Turn the clarity setting to zero, that’s why it takes a while to store the photo
Yeah you can change the box for single shot but not for the wide tracking box
brazil beach, yeah
Slaps
Would you say this is better than the 100vi?
I 2nd this
I personally think so as the camera is a simular size with the 18mm f2 or the 27mm f2.8
So having that ability to change lenses does it for me 😍
That color LUT you used on this video and photos is amazing. Mind to share or let us know where to find it?
Yeah I sell it 😅 linked in the description!
I am working on a flog2 LUT pack, but if you watch my xt5 vs a6700 vs r7 video there is a free flog2 lut that I made
Just seen the link from description. I am checking out. 😊. Thanks man.
These are all super affordable but amazing
For portraits I’ve been loving the Fuji 18mm f1.4, the viltrox 27mm f1.2 and the viltrox 56mm f1.7
I think the viltrox 27mm is a great place to start for portraits if you only want the one lens
What’s the better option between the xT5 vs Xs20 ?
Depends, XS20 is a better hybrid camera and the xt5 is a better photography camera with dual SD cards
Maybe consider the Fuji 18mm f2 or the f1.4 version but I think the viltrox and a the sigma zoom is all you really need
I did just make a video on this topic 😊
@@gerardneedham love all your work btw. I live in NZ 🇳🇿
Brazil ❤
Love me some Brasil 🇧🇷
Kudos for candor. Did Viltrox notify you of the firmware update, or did you learn of it ad hoc? Ever use the Fuji touch screen functions?
Nah I just had a feeling I needed to do it, it’s really easy with the USBC port.
I actually didn’t get sent the 27mm f1.2 from viltrox, I traded it for a camera bag
bonjour,
En dehors de votre cadre personnel prenez-vous votre XT5 pour de la photographie professionnelle ?
Merci
Hey,
No I just use the XT5 for fun and I’m sticking to my Sony bodies for work 😊
@@gerardneedham
OK
I also have a Sony A74 but I'm looking for a more compact configuration for everyday use, maybe a future XT50?
your videos are excellent, always a pleasure to watch
Used prices are very attractive at the minute where I’m from
what camera were you using to film the intro and other scenic shots from the trip? Was that also taken on the XT5?
A mixture, the A-Roll was taken of the FX30, A7IV for the surf videos (telephoto lens) and Broll of the XT and the rest was on the XT5
I'm seriously considering the XT 5. I'm an amateur doing general photography: landscape, nature, animals, street, grandchildren sports, family events. I've considered the A7iv, but like the size and style of Fugi. Have you found the XT5 to be insufficient in auto focus for general purposes? Or are most of their issues now resolved?
curious, which cam/lense is being used during the video of the models?
XT5 plus the same lenses as the photos
Great video mate! Appreciate the effort. I was wondering if you considered picking up the Nikon ZF? I just got the X-T5 w/ 16-80 lens for a re-sale, looking for a ZF now
for my photography all i need is mi desire to go out and shoot.
love this!
Hello. Please tell me what is better to take for the first camera
Fujifilm xs10
Fujifilm xs20
Fujifilm xt5
They are all great, I love the body design of the XT5, I was going to buy the XS20 for the inbuilt flash, but the 40mp sensor and the design of the XT5 was the reason
@@gerardneedhamthank you
Invest in a cheapest body, but buy a good lens. XT-5 might have a price drop in couple of years, then it'll make sense to buy it. Don't invest in intermediate bodies.
@@AlexB-km7os thanks for the advice
hi what's the ergonomy for 4k30fps for XT5, XT4, XH2S ? please
They all do 4K 30fps
@@gerardneedham i mean battery time
beautiful images 🤙
Thankyou
How is the XT-5's auto-focus accuracy?
I’ll give it a 7/10
My new friend Lani, does Lani come with the camera, Jk, great video.
It’s the gold edition
For that kind of photography I would like to recommend X Pro2 instead of X T5.
Mmmm I like the XT5 body design better than the Xpro line
@@gerardneedhamI do have both. X Pro is better with glasses from 12 mm to 90 mm, but with my 100-400 mm I do prefer X T.
The colour 😍
The raw files edit so well
I found my solution with the tamron 20-40 2.8, which replaced my X-T4 with Viltrox 13, Fuji 18-55 and Fuji 10-24.
Yeah that lens looks fire so does the Sony 24-50mm
Do you find the image quality better than the XH2S?
for photography: a6700 or XT-5 ??? or Others ??
XT5 all day
Also for shooting my children doing sports? Basketball and track and field. Torn between these two cameras
Does it support cfexpress type B card?
Nope just sd
Great Video
Do you use any manual glass or just automatic 😮
All autofocus
What's your favorite Fuji film simulation for Jpgs when you're not using Lightroom?
Hey, i dont actually use the JPEGs and I edit all my photos, but I just shoot RAW + JPEG to see the film simulation while shooting .
But I’ve been using Astia/soft
Hi. If I buy one of your presets. How can I use it?
this.is.fucking.amazing.camera!
Aren't you missing the 2-3 extra stops of dynamic range compared to Sony?
Every image I see of the Viltrox lenses always feels flat, as though it has zero 3d pop/microcontrast :(
I really don’t notice it at all, just the depth of field is a little annoying at times
@@gerardneedham I'm so on the fence on considering getting into Fuji (alongside Sony). The old-style analog dials, other than the color science, are so tempting
I like my Nikon gear, but I want nicer straight out of camera JPEGs 🤔
Yeah I actually don’t use the JPEGs but I can see how someone would
Fujifilm is great (and famous) for Fujifilm Film Simulations that can be tweaked endlessly - I love straight out of camera JPEGs
Is it worth losing that full frame?
never. Gear is just gear - the picture happens just about 20cm (if you are a human) behind the sensor. Another thing I've learned wandering around with my crop sensor camera or full frame is the place, light and what's around you rather than brand, megapixels etc.
Like in short no, but I do miss my Sony A7IV raw files.
But in reality this type of photography and video APSC is great, cheap and light
I just wish i could afford this camera
Easy - find a job.
Sad mate you never know people’s circumstances
Hey man,
It’s best to pick up the older versions for cheaper
You never need the latest tech
2:44 nice picture.......whaaaat?
Oh thanks man, from a kit lens tooooo

Yes here is my pro gear that makes me feel uninspired... Who says that lol
I do mate, shoot as much as me and when your hobby turns into your job you get bored very very fast, same thing every day with the Sony and I felt like switching it up and I feel great and I enjoy my hobby again!
@@gerardneedhamkudos brother
I got my xt5 for sale! 😅
Your girlfriend is so beautiful.
Thanks, She was the one surfing BTW and has supported me in many other videos ☺️
It’s annoying to have to click the screen, maybe it’s deep in the menu but I can’t find it or my friends who shoot canon don’t know about it
4:00 flair…
