I don’t even paint. I was just researching what my wife might have meant by saying she wanted to ‘peg’ me, and now I’m watching videos about painting little statues.
EDIT: In all seriousness I’ve been painting for over 20 years and this video was just relaxing and fun to watch. I really want some of the sculpts to paint for fun without having to stress about the perfect blends and highlights.

This is the most important advice for any new painter. Understanding and accepting the "ugly stage". Once you learn to apply criticism at the END of a work and not before its even been born you can start to improve and just plain have fun. I think 50% of all experience with minipainting and maybe any creative hobby is building up a tolerance to that "ugly stage" so you can actually create.

I've been watching a lot of beginner tutorials lately and this is probably one of the better ones. You're not throwing out a million techniques a minute and mentioning things that might be easy but no beginner will be able to make proper use of. You go slow and show examples instead of speeding through the whole process. It helps that your final results LOOK doable from a beginner perspective, instead of like you have 50 years experience and spent 40 hours on a single mini.

You can use brush-on primer if spray can outside and airbrush inside aren't options. Vallejo black primer (I think intended for airbrush) works really well for me. It looks a bit patch when it goes on and dries, but gives a perfect based for paint to go on. I find it better than spray in some regards, you're much less likely to over apply the primer and losing detail. It just takes longer than spray.
It's also really useful for getting the bits you miss when you spray outside. My go to is citadel Chaos Black outside, and then then the missed bits with the black primer.

Very much agree Peach - I've always been primarily someone who paints for the goal of getting minis on the table, but I can't deny the act of painting and listening to my favourite music/having films and shows on in the background has been massive for my mental health.

@@thepaintingphase As weird as it seems, and perhaps not the most conducive to painting, but my fave band is Motorhead, so I'll often pop them on, but for a less perhaps frantic painting experience, I'll usually whack an 80's playlist on Spotify -there's loads of good ones. In terms of shows it's usually something like Bottom or the Young Ones, even though I know them word for word, just love listening along to old classics from younger days!
Course, if it's Napoleonics I'm painting, it might have to be Sharpe!

For brush application, just brush on a primer, no need to use a 'base paint' that will "rub off as time goes on". Although having them available in specific colours is a nice to have, a primer is essentially just a surface treatment on the model that helps the actual paints stick better, as long as you get a complete all over coat, job done 👍
Also, Emil and Lukas from Squidmar regularly spray primer outside in snowy Sweden.
As soon as you mentioned using a contrast paint over a gold base I though "OMG! Hot Rod Candy Apple Red!" 😜

I live in Norway where it is really cold this time of year. I have found it works fine to stand outside with the spraycan priming my models as long as I bring them in as soon as I'm done so they can dry in the correct temperature. But I keep everything inside until I am ready to prime and make sure to shake the spraycan well before use.

Great stuff as usual, boys! I loved the old Warcraft games and had my time with WoW and Hearthstone, so those models hit just right for me.
I'm so glad you got into the differences in applying contrast/speedpaint (do we just say 'translucent paints'?) versus more typical, acrylic layer paint, especially as those translucent paints are marketed to newbies. Being a (relatively) new painter, I have found that in many cases I prefer layer paints over translucent paints because they are so much easier to control and fix. CItadel Contrast is (in my experience) better for this than Army Painter Speedpaint, but even Citadel is still harder to apply cleanly than acrylics - if you go over a wet layer of contrast paint, for example, it can look splodgy or patchy. Acrylic paints, even if it takes two or three thin coats, always looks nice and smooth.

    • @thepaintingphase
      @thepaintingphase  11 місяців тому +1

Yeah it’s tricky knowing what to refer to them as, as they all do a similar job, I do however like ‘translucent’ paints, but even then that doesn’t help explain the job of what they do…..urgh such a first world problem 😂
Thanks for the comment though, great insights 👍

Regarding priming in colder temperatures - it's perfectly doable as long as the paint itself doesn't get too cold, so warm the spray can in a water bath before use, don't take too long outside so the models or paint gets cold, and take the models inside to dry.

My golden rules for spraying - target a day with 60% humidity or better if possible, pre-warm the can in a pot of warm water for several minutes. Next, shake the can for at least 5 minutes (time it - longer than you think). Spray at a range of approx 20cm away in short bursts 'sweeping' across the model. Bring the models indoors immediately on a cold day.

I challenge your statement that a hand painted undercoat will rub off over time. I got the GW 2nd Ed set mid 90's and all of the models were hand painted from undercoat to final finish. They look as good today as they did on the day they were finished. However, later metal models were given a matt varnish because they would ware at points like elbows, weapons or tops of pointy helmets. But hand painting base coats was simply labour intensive, not detrimental to the finish.

What we need is a 28mm scale tabletop game based on the 1st and 2nd wars of azeroth.

At the moment they’re currently STL downloads, but I’m sure that will change in time.

they're free to download, though you'll need a 3D printer!

There are 3d printing services all over that you could probably get them printed by fairly easily. I do not know any offhand, sorry, as I have a printer.

Great vid matey. I slowed it down to 0.25 to see whose name popped up at the beginning... Is that what you sound like when you are drunk? ;-)

Good tips. I would've skipped the music, it muddies the voice and makes it somewhat harder to hear.

the spray technique you're showing for the base color is incorrect... you should do a dust coat first (let dry completely) then a normal coat to ensure smooth look without filling in details (3 very thin coats would be even better)
