I'm burned out from trying so I am sticking to Manually and your video is Just what the doctor ordered. Thanks again HRD. Will be in touch. KD9QAN Monitoring.
@@HAMRADIODUDE I love the ft70, but sorely disappointed with the battery. It only held up for 4 hours. The battery eliminator is coming tomorrow, and will be needed in my truck. I now also am the proud owner of a ft2d. It came around noon, and it only lost 2 bars in 10 hrs of programming, sd card in, sd card out, backup, restore etc. I somehow thought the learning curve would not be as steep as it has become, the two radios are worlds apart, and the ft70 now even seems simple to use. What a difference, but what fun. I have also discovered quad net, so it's happy days. I have bought an icom id31 as well, so I will have the holy trinity on board (dmr, dstar and fusion), so let the fun and games continue!
I just picked up the 70D from Giga. Got a secondary batt,19in retractable antenna, quick charger, and external mic. Super excited! Thanks for making these FT-70D specific vids!! BTW... yes I did subscribe.
@@okhamradio So far so good. Getting a slow start. Just programmed the call freqs and some local repeaters. I have yet to actually transmit, but I'm getting the hang of the radio. Thanks again!
This video is why I bought yaesu ft-70 from ham radio outlet. Thanks .. great video (watched it 3x) and I saved a chunk of $$ not ordering it from Amazon... and ham radio outlet ... got it in 1 day with free shipping.
I got one of these toys yesterday. First I stuffed up my callsign so had to figure out the Reset. Watched a few videos of it your example was best. I kept trying to do it but wouldn't work until I took out the battery a second then it worked instantly. I'm in Australia and not licenced yet for digital but I still own a few digital/analogue radios. my other favourite is the mobile version of this one the FTM-100. Got new things yesterday to give me something to play with keep me busy. The last 6-7 years our ACMA said they will increase all bands and power to meet international standards. Any way they're only getting around to it this year. Making all licences combined into one. So I will be able to use digital without any extra exams/ practical demo's. don't matter. I remember before I got licence the old amateurs told me - people can buy/own any type of transmitter and listen but not transmit unless licenced. So after I got my own licence the same oldies got angry I own loads of digital or multimode HF and told me I'm not allowed to own these radios which I replied Bullshit!! :) If I ever used the Wires thingy I'd login around 2am so nobody would notice I was listening there but I do need to transmit to login. Nobody ever complained and I did tell them about listening on digital. So if the dopey gov't update our licences to meet international standards I will be able to use every function. :) Thanks for the good info I better go find more.. my club could have complete local repeaters already programmed. Looked at the offset of 147.000 Mhz and it says Plus and it is Minus 0.600khz here. Those banned here baofeng crappy radios are a lot easier to setup than this radio. But Yaesu is good quality never a problem.
Great job on this video HRD!, I have had this radio for several months now and love it! - In this video you mentioned that the FT-70 does not have a battery charge icon, it DOES have an battery icon but it does not show until the battery reaches %50. I think this is the biggest problem with the battery, people see the icon showing at %50 and think it means the battery is low when it actually is not!
Thought I responded to this earlier! Thanks much. You are right. I had the battery indicator come on somewhere around 4-5 hours, but the battery lasted a total of 13.5 hours. So, you're totally correct with that assumption.
From what I can tell, it looks like front panel programming is pretty easy and similar to an FT-60R, FT-65R, FT-4XR, etc. but I could be wrong. I'm considering one of these but have heard claims of short battery life so I'd need to get an extra battery or two. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for another great video! I learned a lot from your very informative teaching about this radio! I just got mine last week. Upgraded form uv5r type radio after it finally died. I'm glad I decided to get this radio. Very nice radio, Thanks again! Wz0b/Bob
Still a No contact with that repeater in English Indiana. I am going to write that one off. I have pretty good contact with the one in Jasper, In. That's about 25 miles as the crow flies and that's pretty good for my little 5 Watt Yaesu Transceiver. Hey HRD, thanks again. You explain things pretty well. Really appreciate it. Next, I am wanting to talk with you about programming my radio. The Data transfer cable that came with the radio doesn't get "recognized" by my computer. Anyway, we'll get into that later. Thanks bro.
BATTERY NOTES: Confirming what Brad Barrone noted about the Battery icon showing up at 50%. It then progresses to an "Empty Battery" icon while it still carries on with no loss of function that I experienced. The vid at 20:15 notes the Function to check battery voltage. Final Note: I got 16+ hours on this radio yesterday off a fresh battery just listening/scanning and playing with functions, manually programming frequencies into memory. This DOESN'T discredit anyone else's battery experience. Just relaying my own experience under my specific usage - constantly on scanning mode while hiking around mountains experimenting with finding signals. I did not transmit. I purposely left it on, scanning and monitoring battery use throughout the day 7am-11pm.
I did a live stream a while back (not available to view currently) but that's great time you got out of it. I got just over 13 hours with no sound, just the radio on. I love this radio though. Thank you both for the clarification on the battery indicator
Can anyone tell me what the little telephone character is in the bottom right corner of the screen. And you went over how to put channels in memory but not how to get back to them
Hi, is there a feature in the settings where my screen will light up whenever there's a Rx? It just times out and every Rx after that . Only the LED lights come on every Rx but the screen won't light up unless I press something on the keypad.
I would really like to know how to clear a memory item from the memory channel list. The manual I have has it under the heading "Clearing Memories", but the procedure they give absolutely does not work. This is disappointing because the most basic memory functions are to create, edit and delete (i.e. clear) a memory item.
Yes a real good vid, but I have the same problem trying to clear the memory channel, if I hit vm it will add another memory instead of deleting , it worked once ,so I am missing something
Hey there. Thanks for asking. You are correct, if it's no tone, f5 is off. If there's an error, it may be something else. What's the information youre trying to put in? I'll try to replicate it
Can I search the memory by call name? I just DL'd all of the channels in Florida to Chirp. My FT-70 is still charging and I don't want to disturb it. I just got it and the bat tree was flat. I'm not Australian...
Very informative, thank you. Two questions: At 10:14 you made a test call but you received no reply. What good was doing that test without confirmation that you set all parameters correctly? Also, after inputting the frequency, tone, offset, etc., and saving to memory, could you show how to view to check that all is correct? And if wrong, how to change and save those parameters?
You have a good point about 10:14, I guess how would I know for example l we getting heard. That was an oversight on my part. I can defintely come up with something to explain checking everything. It'll be a few days as I'm currently immobile. That's for the compliment!
its not working on my ft3d the fm has a line over it and I hit the repeater, I punched in a frequency and can receive but not transmit, I will keep soldiering thru I bought the ft 70 just one more radio I want to learn how to program, this video is helping
I just got my yaesu ft70dr in this morning and and I just wanted to say I love the way it feels when I hold it in my ✋ I been watching your videos on how to program it so far I'm doing ok on it but one little question what is the p.l.tone
Great to hear! PL Tone / CTCSS are just tones which the radio can hear and transmit. If these tones are enabled, only people with those tones enabled and on the same frequency as you can hear you (and vice versa). if a repeater needs a tone of 107.2 , for example, and you transmit without the tone: The repeater will reject you. If you then put in the tone in the radio and transmit, the repeater should be able to hear you. Works for simplex, between two radios also.
Thank you. I’m a newbie, which you’ll be able to tell from his question. When you were programming the repeaters you knew they were analog, not digital. How did you know that? Also, you were using the push to talk button during some of the programming. Was that button causing the radio to transmit in that circumstance? I’m not licensed yet so that think that would be important for me to know.
I typically use the website repeaterbook.com. on that website there's information as to whether it's digital, analog, and what mode of digital it might be
As far as me using the push to talk button during the video, I'll have to go back and reference it when I'm near your computer to determine at what point I use that push to talk button. I'll get back with you.best wishes in the hobby
Please don’t go to the trouble of rewatching. I don’t know anyone in he hobby so I’m going it alone and starting at zero. That should explain the level of my questions. Thanks for the videos, they help.
Thank you for such a helpful video! I ran into an issue trying to add frequencies into a bank... I successfully added freq to bank #1 however, when I try to add freq to bank #2 I get the message... "reg bank". I can't get beyond that point... Any suggestions:?
Glad it helped! The only thing I read in the manual is on page 4 of the advanced manual - I no longer have the radio to check, unfortunately. Good Luck!
@@HAMRADIODUDE thank you for the info... I checked that already, to no avail... I'll try reaching out to a local Elmer, maybe they can help. Thank you, again!
Question on this radio. I have one. I’m experiencing a flashing signal bar. The first one. It only does that in the first ‘stored’ channel. Do you know why?
great video...very clear explanation f how to program my FT-70D, Question...is your sound sync off? There seems to be some times where your are talking and your mouth is closed
It probably is off, I try hard but I'm not an audio guy or a video guy really.. the delay exist because of a mixer inline most likely. OBS allows me to set a delay of so many milliseconds so the audio and video will sync up, but it's never really perfect.. sorry
Ok HRD, I have 2 Repeaters programmed. The 3rd one however has an uplink tone as CSQ. I am bewildered on how to input those letters. Will you Please assist me? Then I will have 3 Programmed and that should be enough because of the Lack of repeaters in my area. Thank you for whatever assistance you will give HRD. Joe.
Sure joe s. What is the repeater you are attempting to program in? If you give me all in the info, I'll do it on mine to ensure it works. I'll probably make a video out of it too, because I'm not good at typing and explaining things. Thanks! - HRD
@@HAMRADIODUDE With the repeater I am having problems contacting, I am going to move a bit closer to it to make sure it wasn't a "location" issue. Will get back with you and thanks again. You explain things really well. Just a little info to tell you. I hope you believe me because I'm still having trouble believing it. Yesterday around 7:30 in the evening, I answered a "net station" controller in rounding up members for the local Ham Radio Club. Now, this Repeater is approximately 18 miles from me. After he was doing the roll call, he was accepting any one else who would like to chime in. My Yaesu FT-70DR/DE made CONTACT with that Repeater and that guy answered me back. I was weak in signal but he was able to Log my Call sign in and chat briefly so as not to tie up the Frequency. Now,,,HOW ABOUT THAT ! I never in my wildest dreams would think that my little 5 Watt would be able to reach out that far. Oh yes, I forgot to mention I purchased that Diamond SRH770s HT antenna. It made all the difference. KD9QAN signing off.
I do not have my license yet and bought the FT70DR as a motivation to complete my test. I would like to listen to the radio, not transmit. Is there a way to bypass the call sign entry since I do not have one yet?
you can just put in anything, but make sure not to transmit before then. When you get your license, make sure to go back and change the callsign. Good luck.
I'm not going to answer this in the other comments you made, but this is what you're looking for on the yaesu FT70D - hit F then 4 (step). Change it from AUTO to 5 or 10.0 K. and then hit F to save the changes. At that point, you should be able to input it or scroll down. to 151.820. Same concept with the FT65 and Ft4x, but off hand, I don't have those radios to tell you where the "Step" option is. Good luck!
Go into SET menu and it is number 61- toggle it to ON and alert is set but you must be scanning any channels as long as the weather channels are included in the scan. Make sense? So to start at the beginning, Hold down F button Scroll to item 61 (WX ALT) weather alert Toggle it by hitting the F button again to ON begin scanning and your GTG! ✌️ -73
Question, I am so new to hams that I dont even have my license yet; testing next month. I have the FT70D with RT Systems software. I have 40 or so channels programmed into memory and I have 3 Banks. My problem is when I go to the banks I can only get the first one to show up. Can you explain how to get to each bank? Thank you....
Check out this awesome manual/cheat sheet from n8ukf- www.n8ukf.com/wmsf/index_htm_files/Yaesu%20FT-70D%20Cheat%20Sheet.pdf Recall Memory Channels in Memory Bank Mode: *In Memory Bank Mode, memory channel selection is limited to channels assigned to the selected Memory Bank* 1. In VFO Mode, press [V/M] to enter Memory Mode. *Pressing [BAND] toggles between Bank Mode and regular channel mode. 2. To select a different Bank, press [F] and the [BAND] and the rotate [DIAL]. 3. Once the desired bank has been selected, press the [BAND] key again. 4. Now rotate [DIAL] to select channels assigned to the selected Bank. I hope this helps;
That's a good question. Off hand, I don't think you can have a blank channel name. You could change the display mode, however. ." Press the [ F ] key, then press the [ MODE ] key. The display changes between the memory tag display and the frequency display.• If a name tag has not been set for the memory/home channel, the beep sounds and the display will not change"

I can't get the positive offset to stick. I program it but it will not stay. When I change from and go back its back to a neg offset.
How do I put repeater offset frequency in on 70cm
I'm not sure I understand? The same way you would on VHF? Thanks for clarifying
You explained it all. Thanks
I’m confused with editing the name ? Also in bank mode how do you edit the name in bank mode ? The manual glosses over it . Thanks .
Hello, unfortunately I don't have your radio anymore so I do not remember
Brilliant radio.
It is a wonderful radio. Thanks for commenting.
Hi do you have the link for the video to program digital?
I believe this may be of assistance - ua-cam.com/video/uERG3ip-EZk/v-deo.html
Informative and very helpful. Thanks.
Thanks for the comment. No problem!
Tnx boss easy access on my FT70D👍
Awesome how to video.
Thanks
I just scored it with a tiny screwdriver and it worked.
@@karenminichino6715 my pleasure. If I think of anything, I'll make sure to update the post. Cheers.
Very well produced. Thanks for this!
Very useful reference. FT-70 is not intuitive for a beginning Ham, nor are Repeaters. Thank you!
Question on this radio. I have one. I’m experiencing a flashing signal bar. The first one. It only does that in the first ‘stored’ channel. Do you know why?
Strangely enough I just wondered onto the answer. It’s indicating squelch lvl. Sorry about the question
great video...very clear explanation f how to program my FT-70D, Question...is your sound sync off? There seems to be some times where your are talking and your mouth is closed
It probably is off, I try hard but I'm not an audio guy or a video guy really.. the delay exist because of a mixer inline most likely. OBS allows me to set a delay of so many milliseconds so the audio and video will sync up, but it's never really perfect.. sorry
@@HAMRADIODUDE Thanks for the explanation...I wondered why it was happening. I'm not an audio /video guy either
Thanks! - HRD
@@HAMRADIODUDE I'll get that for you this evening HRD. Am working now. Ty sir
Thank you !! Very good!! Where’s the other videos for this radio?
Thanks! ua-cam.com/play/PLQQNWPUnngveo_OiYQ1k3A_zJpBwKSUi7.html
Good luck.
I can't get it to use 151.820 shifts to 151825, baofeng is no problem... ?
I'm not going to answer this in the other comments you made, but this is what you're looking for on the yaesu FT70D - hit F then 4 (step). Change it from AUTO to 5 or 10.0 K. and then hit F to save the changes. At that point, you should be able to input it or scroll down.
to 151.820. Same concept with the FT65 and Ft4x, but off hand, I don't have those radios to tell you where the "Step" option is. Good luck!
This video helped me so much! 😃😃😃
Awesome!
If you can would you do a video on setting it up to alert if NOAA weather alerts?
I'd love to, but I no longer have the radio. I fried it or it died (I think I friend it)
Go into SET menu and it is number 61- toggle it to ON and alert is set but you must be scanning any channels as long as the weather channels are included in the scan. Make sense?
So to start at the beginning,
Hold down F button
Scroll to item 61 (WX ALT) weather alert
Toggle it by hitting the F button again to ON
begin scanning and your GTG!

hi! could you please help me. convert my ft70d file to csv? i dont have an opportunity.
great video ... following along with my new yaesu .... thanks
Great to hear! Hope everything is going well!
Awesome tutorial Dude, thank you
Glad it helped!
Check out this awesome manual/cheat sheet from n8ukf- www.n8ukf.com/wmsf/index_htm_files/Yaesu%20FT-70D%20Cheat%20Sheet.pdf
Recall Memory Channels in Memory Bank Mode:
*In Memory Bank Mode, memory channel selection is limited to channels assigned to the
selected Memory Bank*
1. In VFO Mode, press [V/M] to enter Memory Mode.
*Pressing [BAND] toggles between Bank Mode and regular channel mode.
2. To select a different Bank, press [F] and the [BAND] and the rotate [DIAL].
3. Once the desired bank has been selected, press the [BAND] key again.
4. Now rotate [DIAL] to select channels assigned to the selected Bank.
I hope this helps;
I know this thread is a little old. Question on how to not enter a name for the saved channel. After you hit the v/m again it's requesting a name etc
Excellent video.
Excellent video
What do you do here:
Downlink 145.800
Uplink 144.490
I'm using a Yaesu FT-70, of course.
Great video
Thank you
