When Kira is being rescued by Odo, Cisco, and Garak, Kira remarks to the Cardassian leader "Don't worry, he's on our side - I think..." I remember thinking "A classic description of Garak!"
I actually liked Michael Eddington as a character because I did feel blindsided by his reveal of being a Maquis. One thing I liked about O'Brien was the touch his sleeves always being rolled partway up his arm.
Fun fact! Wardrobe designed his uniform with the sleeves permanently rolled like that because he did it so often. It's also the inspiration for Mariner's sleeves!

Jadzia dying was a tragedy that still irritates me, but I actually liked having Ezri in the show. It brought the Sisko/Dax relationship full circle, with the pupil becoming the mentor, and I really wish they'd leaned more on that than her interactions with Worf.
Dax is by far one of, if not THE best female character ever written and portrayed. She is smart but not arrogant, wise but still with her own flaws, beautiful and confident but not vain, proud of and ready to use her sexuality but not overtly sexualized, fiercely loyal to a fault at times... She frequently talks about the bumps and bruises and lessons she learned the hard way across many lifetimes which gives the feeling like every amazing trait she has was earned through more blood, sweat, and tears than we can imagine. I don't think any other combination of actresses+writers could have given us as good of a character.
The fact that Garak isn't in the thumbnail for this video is a major oversight. But, that's exactly the way the character would have wanted it... and I suspect you knew that going in. Well played, sir. Garak was a vital and irreplaceable part of ultimately defeating the Dominion, and saving the entire Alpha Quadrant, and I fully agree with your choice of putting him at #1.
Honestly I could actually see Martok as Chancellor siding with Picard in helping with the Romulan evacuation as a way to Honor that they were once allies in the Dominion War.

No matter how poorly she was served by the writing Ziyal was worth every minute of screen time. Without her we never get the amazing exchange between Garak and Kira after her death: Kira: She loved you, you know. Garak: I never could understand why… and now I guess I never will. Whatever you thought about Ziyal the character you gotta love that she saw something in Garak he couldn’t even see in himself.
Quark is by far my favorite DS9 character. I love how he portrays himself as a typical Ferrangi but really he is a good guy who does the right thing in the end, and yeah he’ll make some profit along the way, but common he’s still a ferrangi.
With such a great ensemble cast, it's hard to rank them! Congratulations on a thought-provoking list, and allowing me (and a lot of other people--98,263 so far) revisit this great show. Today, my list is more or less Kira, Odo, Sisko, Quark, Gul Dukat, Bashir, Jadzia Dax, Garak ... but tomorrow I would possibly change my mind. I tend to like the conflicted characters, or those with traumas in their past, rather than the nice steady ones like O'Brien. I find Worf (and Klingons in general) not that interesting. I realized how much I'd missed DS9 on seeing some of the episodes again when BBC America was running it. Now, alas, they just have Next Generation, which I don't like much--too bland. The big strength of DS9 was the characters, who really seized hold of my mind and feelings, for good or bad. The last episode was so heartbreaking--up there with the last episode of M*A*S*H.
He was not on the list, and nor was Quark's mom (Noogie? Not sure how to spell her name). I suppose they considered not main plot-driving characters, but they are among the most memorable.
@@DistractANoodle not my head canon. The actors are on record as saying they chose to play Garak and Bashir as a queer couple. Once the producers figured it out, that’s when Bashir and O’Brien became friends and Garak got a girlfriend.

No matter how poorly she was served by the writing Ziyal was worth every minute of screen time. Without her we never get the amazing exchange between Garak and Kira after her death:
Kira: She loved you, you know.
How could anyone rank Prune juice, extra large, so low? You dishonor you and your house.
I think it's indicative that although we can argue about this or that ranking, there's no more than one or two duds on the whole list.
WHAT good show.
You put Kasidy way above Weyoun….
This.
I thought you forgot about Garak! Ha, very accurate list indeed ☺️
I might have swapped Sisko and Garak in the list, and I thought both Winn and Dukat belonged higher, but otherwise it's hard to fault their choices.
Love this video! Great job. Great rankings! Sisko is still my #1, though.
I think I would have put dukat a bit higher, but all these characters are SO great. Totally agree with #1
Glorious work! Total comfort food, thank you
Did I miss Grand Negas Zek? Or was he just not here?
He was not on the list, and nor was Quark's mom (Noogie? Not sure how to spell her name). I suppose they considered not main plot-driving characters, but they are among the most memorable.
This beautiful video reminded me how much i love DS9. Great job guys!
Keep it warm for Morn . Thats all i have to say about that.
Deep Space Nine is, arguably, the best written and acted Star Trek series in the entire franchise. It's a very high bar, 'twoud seem.
It feels lacking not mention that the Bashir/O’Brien friendship was only created to break up Star Trek’s first male same sex couple; Bashir and Garak.
I can't figure out is this just your headcanon or somehow confirmed, but I love it.
@@DistractANoodle not my head canon. The actors are on record as saying they chose to play Garak and Bashir as a queer couple. Once the producers figured it out, that’s when Bashir and O’Brien became friends and Garak got a girlfriend.
How do you explain Q and his obsession with Picard?
Garak is appropriate at 1 but Sisko, Weyoun, Dukat, and Quark would make my top 5. In no particular order. With Odo a very close 6th spot.
No Kira? She's my no. 1, Odo my no 2, Sisko no. 3,. That's today; tomorrow I may change the order.
When you watch Dukat and Winn together or Sisko and Winn together, I think it's clear that Winn should be up there with both of them.
That smile - oh dear! So glad he made the number 1 spot.
Risky move putting Garak at No1.
I don't think you were ever going to win with this ordering.
Interesting evaluation of the characters, particularly Kira.
Her journey is one of the greatest in Star Trek history.
....tf Michelle Forbes found something else to do.
a little late, but the chapters have typos. "odom" "garrick" and "captain cisco"
Love this video. I don't agree with calling it worst to best. What was great about the series is how the supporting cast was so developed. Now on to your list. When they made Sisko # 3. I am was questioning them But Garak # 1. "I can live with it"
But: there was only one "Major" character and even she was promoted to colonel at some point.
This was good for me to see. I only saw the series through once -- now I'm going to do it again.
My feeling about DS9 is the extended characters are even more interesting than the main cast. And it's thanks to interesting writing and incredible character actors.
What about Zeck and Moogie?
Number 1 for me is Sisko, then Otto, Kira, Worf, Quark, Garack
