    I just hand mounted a Motoz Tractionator HT, just like the one in your video, on the front of my DR 650. The casing is noticeably stiffer than most, and it made me work, but it wasn't that bad to mount. I began riding the tire at 20 psi and once I got on the gravel and rocky terrain, aired it down to 18.5 psi and it showed a noticeable improvement in sticking to the terrain. It was bouncing around a bit before and not hooking up all that well. Rode a half day on dirt and after that I rode it about 45 miles on twisty roads and at highway speeds and it really wasn't as noisy as you might think it might be. The road was warm and dry and it held quite well, even at 18.5 psi. I might even go a little lower with the air pressure, but the tire feels really good. I used balancing beads inside the tube to counter the weight of the rim lock. This is a beefy tire.

    Thanks for the insight on these tires. I have a 250 rally and I've gone down every single time I try and ride sand with the stock IRC's. Today was my worst fall when I lost the front end in a sandy, rutted wash... Needless to say, the stock tires are going to be replaced relatively soon because of how awful they are in sand and loose terrain. Living in Southwest Utah, sand is unavoidable and I really need a tire that inspires confidence. I've been looking into the RallZ's, Desert HT's, Tusk D sports and Dunlop D606's. I don't think I can go wrong with any of them, but those RallZ's seem like a great compromise due to having decent on road manners too, from what I gather.

      The Rallzs are my go-to light adventure tire so far. You can't go wrong with the Desert HTs either as long as you ride them in the terrain they were made for.

    Nice!!! I currently have the Motoz Tractionator desert HT front and rear on my XR 650L. the front wears exceptional and is quiet, second best to the Goldentyre Fatty which wears fast. The rear is by far the best tire that I have mounted, better than a Dunlop 606, however will wear on street with moderate deceleration noise! But only on street. 👍

    Now that you have had time on these tires which do you like the best?
    I ran the H/T’s on my Africa Twin and loved everywhere but noisy on the highway.
    How do you think the RallZ on rear and H/T up front would do?
    I feel the H/T would do better in mud than the RallZ up front
    but RallZ would a quieter ride in the rear.
    Would I give up rear traction doing that?

    • @JohnTYoung

      Hi Jason. Every tire is different and I have yet to find the unicorn of tires. HT's in the dry. Rallz for the long. Hybrids for the hard. And maybe the Enduros for the soft. I REALLY like the HT fronts for sand and gravel and they scare the poop out of me when it's wet. So... so far my favorite all-rounder, wet or dry, has been the Rallzs. If I were to never ride in the rain the HTs would be a good choice as well.

      I've gone down to 10, but usually sit around 12. I have not installed rim locks yet so to go any lower would increase the pucker factor. 20 or so on the highway seems to do fine.

    How did the Desert HT do compared to the rallz

    • @JohnTYoung
      @JohnTYoung  2 роки тому

      They are as they look to be... The Desert tires don't last as long and are much noisier but are better off-road. The RallZs have some silica in them so are better in the wet.

  • @scottloudon14
    @scottloudon14 4 роки тому

    The Motoz desert is a little noisy. I also found it very pressure sensitive and likes to be run soft, which sounds like you've experienced that with the rallz's. I don't know about mileage, pulled mine very early, as I'll primarily be on road for a bit. But found them great to ride.

    • @JohnTYoung
      @JohnTYoung  4 роки тому

      I just put them on tonight so you're comment is right on time. I filled them to 20 psi and took a cruise down the highway. The rear is a little more buzzy than the Rallz, but I'm hoping they give me just a touch more traction in Arizona / Utah. I've heard the front is dangerous when it's wet out. Is that true?

    • @scottloudon14
      @scottloudon14 4 роки тому

      @@JohnTYoung It should work very well for your environment. I didn't ride a lot of wet so it wasn't much of a a problem. It felt more like the Dunlop D606 (80/20) up front in the wet. Just be aware the wet characteristic are different and you'll be fine. The rear worked as expected.

      @@JohnTYoung Honestly I haven't done enough research yet. I don't ride on road a lot. I would say I ride 75 off and 25 on, and would like a tire that's pretty aggressive but not over the top. • @richielee5398
    @richielee5398 4 роки тому

    Another good video. Always a hot topic what are the best tyres. But as you say it really is dependant on what you use the bike for. Over here in the uk we end up riding in wet slippery mud a lot. Makes tyre choice tricky as the only tyres that work in deep mud wear real quick on the road. I've used mitas e09 back tyres on my 701 which aren't great in deep mud but will keep you moving but will do about 2500miles before throwing. Been running intermediate/hard ground motocross tyres on my crf450l so far. Cheap as they are offer at the mo. I would say they are half worn at 700miles . But the tread pattern is wide enough to find reasonable grip in mud.
    Off topic but what year and model are your acerbis frame protection. Need to get some for mine.
    The rally tower I've designed and built is almost finished now so will be interesting to see how it performs after this virus lockdown ends.

    • @JohnTYoung
      @JohnTYoung  4 роки тому

      I am hopeful these tires will work well as most of my riding in on Colorado rocks or Utah sand/rocks. But who knows. The frame protectors are for a 2019 CRF450R and need to be cut up a bit to make them fit. I want to see pictures of your tower when you're done!

      John T. Young ...that’s true. We don’t get much rain in most of Australia, so most (but not all) MotOZ tyres are designed for dry conditions. I did 6000 miles on the standard Tractionator Adventure rear and they were fine in the wet, but the Enduro and Desert tyres aren’t so good in wet conditions or mud.

      Young no...no...the opposite....narrow tires are the way to go my friend!...watch the video from Bret thacks on adventure tires....the narrower the tire the more pounds per square inch you get on your contact patch....but the thing is you actually get less static traction when you have wider tires on a rim made for narrow tires because it makes the tire much more stretched out and wears your center long before the side knobs...that's why I went smaller ...it stretched the tire out like those goofy looking Subaru trims where the rim's are wider that the tires....this makes it flat like a car tire...weird handling in the twisties but the traction of god on the trails...because there is such a great contact patch
