      You got them boulder shoulders with extra boulders! Exactly what I'm looking for, as I have a neck that makes giraffes look short.
      Farmers walks also give me runners high haha

    great info. i thought i knew everything about farmers walk, but you taught me something and i can't wait to try it. i already knew and agree with every other fact you said, but i never thought of cancelling momentum around the turns by opposing the handles. fantastic idea! i'm actually excited. 54 years old, can carry 210 in each hand for 25 feet out, turn, 25 feet return, 420 total. the only thing you didn't mention was romanian grip. i use it because i use triceps bars for my farmers walk. a cheap way out of buying fw handles. much better than dumbells. if you're reading this and like the idea, don't get the threaded handles. get the smooth handles and use spring clamps. it will save you time and aggravation during your workout. but romanian grip isn't possible with thick handles. you won't be able to reach and overlap your thumbs with your fingers. it takes a while to toughen the thumbs, but it's well worth it. probably get an extra 20 pounds in each hand with romanian grip. i learned it from a tommy kono seminar at york barbell when they inducted bill kazmeir into the strongman hall of fame. great event. kono is a genius. you may also like, magnus samuelson says to tighten the traps into an actual shrug to free up the legs. now i've tried it, but i don't really like it. i like my arms to just hang off my shoulders like ropes. this way i can put more of my mind into my grip, and let hip strength drive me. i'm sure it all has to do with body types. anyway, kudos my friend, great video. i will check you out often. maybe sometime i'll send you some outdoor workout video.

    I started lifting and strength training 12 weeks ago and I just found your channel a week ago. I'm truly addicted and want to learn from you as much as possible. I wish I would've watched this before yesterday, because I did my first set of Farmer Walks with dumbbells at my gym and felt something pop near my AC Joint. Going to get it checked out tonight.
    I know now that I shouldn't have let my shoulders drop and flex my traps while walking.. I should've kept my shoulders back and chest high. I just hope that it's a level 1 or 2 AC Joint injury and that I will heal 100%. I really want to start doing Strongman Training and this took the wind out of my sails.
    I know you have been through some bad injuries and that inspires me.. Thank you for the great channel!

    Brian, thank you for doing these videos. I feel like you're going to be one of the most sought after coaches in the near future. Could you please elaborate on exactly how to breathe and brace during the farmer's walk. Breathing and bracing has added exponential gains to all of my other lifts. But here we are walking, we must breathe at some point, right? I've been breathing and bracing while picking up the implements. Then breathing normally while walking, bracing as much as possible. Am I doing it wrong?

    Hey Brian, stumbled across your channel a while back and you have become one of my favorite youtubers! Seriously do not understand how you do not have like 500,000 subs!
    Anyway, I have a question/request. How would one go about programming strongman training? Would love if you made a video on this. I always wondered how many days are spent doing barbell movements & how many days are for strongman implements.
    How would you work them into lets say a 3x a week fullbody routine, or an uppper lower split?
    Keep up the good work man!

    • @BrianAlsruheOfficial
      @BrianAlsruheOfficial  8 років тому +2

      Thanks for the kind words! I made a like 12 minute long video explaining how to layout strongman programming into your normal strength routine on Alan Thrall's Channel. It is called "Free Strength program" or something like that. That should point you in the right direction. Also if you want me to lay out a personalized program for you, i sell that service through my website

      +Brian Alsruhe Brian, could you explain what you mean about the sport's stigma? I didn't know it had a stigma. I thought bodybuilding had more of a stigma because of the *extreme* steroid use and unnatural looking physiques, whereas strongman was pretty respected (as functional, authentic etc.).

  • @geoffskate
    @geoffskate 7 років тому

    In the turn of the weight, you make it look easy with one plate. But.. what if I put more plates? Doesn't look easy to cross the outside wing over the top inside wing with a bunch of plates. Another problem is that I can't just drop the weight and grab it again in the turn because it hurts A LOT and the calluses gets worse (I would only do it in a competition). Is there any weight or distance that I should not do the turns? In my gym i have 50-60 feet of distance to walk. Thanks! And by the way.. this channel is amazing! Subscribed.

    Brian,
    New subscriber great channel...!
    Question: Can you build decent leg size with just specializing in farmers carries?
    Or do you need to add in some form of front or back squats?
    I was thinking of the following:
    Monday: Heavy short distance
    Tuesday: off
    Wednesday: lite long distance
    Thursday: off
    Friday: medium / medium distance
    Repeat...
    Would I need to add any dead lifts or is this enough hip hinging?
    Not a strongman just enjoy all the benifits of the loaded carries.
    Many thanks....and Happy New Year.
    Best regards,
    Eric

      For a cheap alternative I filled two 5-gallon buckets with 45lbs of concrete each, then added whatever weights I could fit in the bucket. 25's fit nicely. I was able to get about 130lbs in there before running out of weight. It's not perfect, but it'll do until you can get some handles.

      Dude, I honestly don't see this channel blowing up any time soon. I get like 30 subs a day on average...I'm pretty sure I will be good to go for a while...

      +Brian Alsruhe I'm just saying that your fans (I count myself as one) are gonna understand when the time comes that you can no longer respond to everyone personally. your content rocks and your attitude is inspiring, and your fans will keep coming back for it. I'm not trying to tell you how to run your biz.

    Nice, I love farmer walks. Just today I picked up 550lbs just to see if I could do it, could I walk with it? Hell no, but I still picked it up!

    I know it's not ideal but I find if I don't bend my elbows slightly it kills my elbow joints.

    "Don't do that"....lol...
    So do you have and videos on injures and or prevention. I have been overdoing frequency on bench and deadlift (not smart...but I was getting gains). I don't have a tear yet (I think) in my biceps and the area that the pec connects to the left arm, but I feel something nasty there when I stretch. I have been doing nothing for the past week and a half, hoping for the best! lol that is the only way I know on how to combat that!
    Head goes body follows...lol thats a Wrestling/Jui-Jitsu thought process.
    And yes I know the Road Runner, my life choices are on point....for the most part!

      Yea man, I made one a few weeks ago but it is more about lower back problems but it covers some basic injury stuff as well. I hope it helps you out man, and hope you feel better soon man!

    Big fan Brian. How do you feel about the hook grip with farmers walks? Any thoughts.

    • @BrianAlsruheOfficial
      @BrianAlsruheOfficial  8 років тому +4

      I would love it if I could pull it off. The handles are too wide so I can't seem to get it. But if I could, i would

    • @RonnieLunn84
      @RonnieLunn84 8 років тому +1

      One of our competitions this year the farmer's had almost 1 3/4 inch handles... good luck hook gripping that. I'd say if you can do it do it, but do it in competition only, don't sacrifice the grip training.

    • @theoilybarbell5187
      @theoilybarbell5187 8 років тому

      Very true. I have trouble with the hook grip anyway. My hands are just to small. I just opened up a gym and decided to include some strongman implements. Thought I'd get some opinions for my members. I appreciate the input.

    Which is better farmer walks with trap bar or farmer carries like the one he's using?

  • @DasGregTheAlmighty
    @DasGregTheAlmighty 8 років тому

    Wicked video. I learned a whole lot. I always hesitate using farmers walk implement cause my gym has a uni-directional indoor track where we are allowed to use them so I'm always forced to go the full 200m. That's when taking breaks every so often counteracts my ego. I'm definitely going to implement them more often.
    Which lift days (bench, dealing, squat, ohp or row) do you recommend adding these farmers walks to?

    • @BrianAlsruheOfficial
      @BrianAlsruheOfficial  8 років тому +2

      Hahaha I can totally understand that brother! I like to throw them after my deadlifts since a lot of the same muscles are used. But if I am getting ready for using them in a comp, I will have a carry day all on it's own

      Man, Its almost 2am and I need to go to sleep but all I want to do is to pick some heavy shit in my hands and go with it for a walk. People would think that Im some robber or something. I think a better idea would be if I'll do it tomorrow morning. Peace

    Would a heavy wheelbarrow do the trick? Not a competitor but I can see the multitude of benefits farmer's carries have.

    • @ultimategodking
      @ultimategodking 8 років тому

      I've asked myself the same. I used to hall bricks and cement in wheelbarrows and my god my forearms and lower traps where on fire.

    • @BrianAlsruheOfficial
      @BrianAlsruheOfficial  8 років тому

      Wheelbarrow definitely would work but you have to load that thing up. At he 2014 Nationals we had to do a wheelbarrow race but they put 1,650lbs in it...

    • @mr.potatohead6138
      @mr.potatohead6138 8 років тому

      Brian Alsruhe holy shit! Wouldn't dare put more than 500 in mine. I guess dumbbells r my only option.

    • @BrianAlsruheOfficial
      @BrianAlsruheOfficial  8 років тому

      Yea man, they were specially made wheelbarrows. I don't know how much you could get away with on standard versions you can buy at a normal store...and yea man, 1650 was heavy

    When to use straps? The purpose to work on grip strength or upper back?
