Strongman 101 - How to Grip a Farmer's Walk

  • Farmer's walks are one of the few grip-heavy events in Strongman. Many grip the handles incorrectly, hurting their performance and leaving points on the table. Learning how to properly hold the farmer walk handles is crucial to maximizing the weight you can hold and how fast you can move.
LIQUID GRIP is the only thing I use on grip events. Dries out the hands quickly, no slippery powder, even smells great. Using it doubled my carry distance with a 740lb frame. If you're getting ready for a grip event, this might be the difference between finishing and not.

Richard Hawthorne mentions to keep the hands scrubbed down and clean from dead skin for dl, but chalking 20min before the event is great, too! learning hook and it slips when chalked up.

It's basically like a false grip used in gymnastics for muscle ups on rings and such. Killer on the forearms and wrist but it will make it stronger.

Love the idea of drying the hands out prior to the event! Shall give it a crack this weekend

I've had so many 'off' days where everything seemed to slip no matter how much chalk I had on. If there's any moisture in the skin, the handles won't stick as well. Taking the time to get the hands dry, I mean old man cracked leather dry, was a big game changer!

Unfortunately, as I've gotten older (67) arthritis is setting into my hands and wrist, and it's harder to keep my hands closed as I lose grip strength. Probably not much can be done about it other than "suck it up and drive on". Great video, though! I'll give it a try!😎👍

Great tip on grabbing higher on your hands and using the most amount of friction. I always picked right below the calluses, and I do OK on farmers events but the back of my hand always let go first. Will def try getting more of my palm skin wrapped around the handle before picking. Any issues with tearing calluses with that grip? Dealing with a torn one now, and it blows.
Awesome content man, glad I found your channel, keep it up!

I appreciate it man! Growing at a turtles pace but I'm going to keep turning out content weekly. Ideas and requests are welcome!
If you are doing ok with it basically in your finger tips, you will crush it with a proper grip! I billed this as a 'secret' but its really how everyone grabs. If a tear happens, it's at the last minute before it slips when it's already lower in your fingers pulling on just the callus. Shaving them down or clipping can help. Tears happen more often with handles that have super rough knurling and when the weather is very humid (I hear horror stories from the guys in the south). Keeping the handles from slipping in the first place is the best way to save your calluses and the surest way for that is to keep your hands bone-dry.

@@AlexanderBromley Yep, NC Strongman checking in, can confirm humidity is shitty 9 months of the year down here haha.
I shared one of your vids to reddit since I think your content is super helpful, so hopefully that can help with the growth a bit. I think you've got some really good topics already, and your presentation and editing is great, esp for a new channel. It's definitely hard to get started and make content that hasn't already been made, but I think your no-bullshit approach (and the fact that you actually compete instead of armchair coach) is the key.
Definitely keep it up man, I've been crushing your videos since I found the channel and have picked up tons of new tips and ideas that haven't been mentioned anywhere else, so I'll definitely been keeping up with what you put out!

If I'm not looking to compete and just using the walk as a means to just increase grip strength wouldn't this particular grip be counterproductive?

would callouses cause tightness and more pain? i developed tissue under my skin in the knuckles for pain and impact, no callouses tho.

But won't the handle gradually fell down in the direction of your fingers at the end? And the wirst is not in a neutral position if you over grab the handle🤔

Where can you buy good farmer handles at a decent price?

    • @jeffcubbage7342
      @jeffcubbage7342 3 роки тому

You can buy some for a little over $100 online, or you can make your own if you have a saw and a drill. I made my own out of 4X4 and it has worked for me very well. Your hands will go out before you get to a weight that will take out deck screws. I followed this guys instructions and it worked out well for me. I would recommend having a pair of pliers too to help screw in the pipes. Best of luck to ya.
