  • What does 1999’s Japanese Horror called Audition mean?
Takashi Miike’s renowned horror classic Audition is about a widowed husband called Shigeharu Aoyama who puts out a casting call for women to audition for a fake radio show.
But the true intention wasn’t to put together a drama but instead for Shigeharu to find a new wife.
In the process of weeding out the applicants, Shigeharu immediately falls for a young 24 year old woman called Asami.
Her application was everything that Shigeharu was looking for, she was ambitious and classy.
But unbeknownst to him, Asami is a mysterious character that has a shady past. We get to see throughout the movie that she is a killer and loves to torutre her victims.
And unluckily for Shigeharu, he gets that full treatment.
Audition is a movie that reminds me of David Fincher’s Gone Girl, it has that same style of uneasiness and tension.
And that really plays well in this movie because it is a slow build up. We mostly follow Shigeharu and Asami’s relationship.
Nothing sinister happens, you might get a snippet here and there but nothing to get you off your seat.
But whilst watching this movie, I was trying to understand why this movie was made?

I really liked your interpretation, and there are many things that I didn't catch (for example the alleged affair with his secretary, or the subconsious view of his son's girlfriend).
My theory is that Asami did in fact experience a traumatic childhood, but not to the degree that was depicted in the dream scenes. Aoyama expected her to be perfect, so the idea that Asami had a troubled childhood created an exaggerated image of her in Aoyama's subconscious. In real life they had intercourse at the hotel and Aoyama had a dream about Asami abandoning him and him piecing the clues together. When he wakes up, he realizes that it was all a dream and this time he continues the dream in his own terms and that's why the son is able to avoid Asami's attacks and kills her. The dream sequence could also be the guilt that he felt for meeting a new woman after his wife passed away.
All in all, as you said it shows how the men in the movie objectify women by asking them very inappropriate questions in order to weed out the "good" and obedient ones. In my opinion, Aoyama deserved the mental torture of his twisted dream, as short as it was.

Interesting interpretation that it was a dream which is a good point because of the absurd nature of the torture you can make that alignment. Appreciate this comment and thanks for allowing me to view this film in another perspective!

Takashi Mikey has said he does not consider this a horror film. More like an exploration of the way a horribly abused mind and body think and function.

This review was amazing and I agree with your theory, it's one of the best ones I've hear and you actually filled it the parts of the movie I didn't quite get during my first viewing.
I think, personally, they're both in the wrong. Disclosure, this is my opinion and I am myself, a woman.
Shigeharu objectifies women and uses them for his own personal gain, like sleeping with his secretary then leaving her high and dry without any consideration to how that may have made her feel, and how he laughed with his friend as women stripped in front of them and performed for them. But I can understand his mentality to a sense as he lost the only woman he truly loved, and so it was hard for him to see other women in the same light. And he did try to do right by Asami, even telling her the truth about the audition.
Asami is cold-hearted, unfeeling, and psychopathic, she tortures and kills people, mostly men, and lulls them into a false sense of security with her good looks and shy demeanor. But like you said, she is also a victim, due to the cruelty of men, she was abused physically, s*xually, and mentally by her step father and dance teacher and grew up to believe that all people would do is hurt her, and so with the pain she endured through her childhood, she decides to get back at her tormenters and anyone else she sees as a potential threat.
This doesn't change the fact however that Asami is a bad person, what happens to you while growing up, is never an excuse to harm and/or kill others undeserving and who did nothing wrong, hence why I don't, personally, feel quite as bad for Asami's step father and dance teacher, who both deserved somewhat of the torture they endured, unlike Shigeharu, who really did care for her, but was just blind to her inner torment and couldn't back out til it was too late, but at least he got to live.
Overall your review was really good and deserves alot more recognition! Your voice is rather soothing too so it made it lovely to listen to your explanation.
I'm definitely going to subscribe and check out more of your content!
    Amazing work, again!❤

This film is an adaptation of a novel, it's meant to add visuals to the story of the novel, that's why it was made.

I think people's lived gender experience really affects how they see the movie. I'm a woman. I've seen countless friends & loved ones get taken advantage of & even abused by men. I understand that women constantly have to be fearful for their lives because of men. To me she wasn't evil. Her abusers deserved it, they deserved worse honestly. However the main character is debatable, to me it's only bad that she tortured him because he hadn't outright physically abused her. Her most evil action was that she was possibly gonna hurt his innocent son. But ngl I was way more sad for the dog than the main character. That guy was a creep, he should've minded his business instead of taking advantage of young girls 💀

Idk maybe it’s because I’m young and maybe it’s cuz I’m naive but to me he wasn’t a creep. He did seem uncomfortable during the audition process and only had eyes for Asami. He was excited to go on a date with her and hang out with her. The only part I found creepy or just ew was when Asami showed the scars of abuse and torture she had to endure to him(but she did lie abt how she got the scar…she did imply that this was really important to her and did affect her). And all he said was, “ You’re beautiful😘” like huh?? No cuddling or simply yknow letting her open up??? He jus went straight to getting his rocks off🤨 Other than that, I thought he was a pretty nice dude.

objectifing my ass! Can we stop pretending that the male protagonist of this movie diserved this? I just finnished it and I am NOT AT ALL agreeing with reviews on youtube. She was coming on to him the WHOLE MOVIE! The guy told her right at the second date their movie is not going anywhere and she kept going for him. I don;t care about anything that hapenned in her life, she had no write to be judge an jury over anyone. Just like the Florence Pugh's character in Midsommar , this chick here had no wright to take another person's life or mutilated them in any way. She had 1000 chances to say " no! i won;t see you again, this has no future". She is the predator in this picture and she would have done that to anyone with any excuse ( i think here, her stupid excuse was that he loved his son and didn't love only her "

Okay, I've just re-watched the video again because I forgot what I said it in it and I never said or implied that the male protagonist deserved the torture he received. I said that the woman was evil but a cause of such evil displays could stem from herself being abused and objectified. I also state what she does is wrong and abuse can happen to men as well. I also call her torture horrible. All I'm trying to do in this video is understand why such a movie would be made and I stand by my theory that this movie is about objectifying woman and what abuse can do to a person. It is obviously shown through an extreme lens because it's a horror movie but that doesn't mean the sub text cannot be looked into a bit deeper.

@@filmisjustmovingpictures Yeah man. I agree with your opinion. And I did not point the finger towards you. You didn't said anything about him deserving torture. I'm not saying that. I was saying that he screening alot of women though that fake movie casting back in the '90 is just the same as swiping right on any date app now'a days. And to have her do all that stuff to him and saying that's his fault because he was objectifying her, it's ALOT! (you didn't say that, other reviewers did).
I wish (just as a mental gymnastic) we could just switch the character's sexes with these kind of situations and screenplays, and then we will realize that they could'nt even film it because it'll be so wild. Great Video, nice editing.

@@_TheGreatOne_but comparing audition to a dating app just isn’t comparable. I agree that the guy didn’t deserve it, he did have, in my opinion as a woman, an innocent mindset, he simply wanted an intimate close romantic relationship. But this audition was for a “film”, the women were in fact tricked and to Asami, who’s gone through abuse and also most likely objectified, only saw it as a trap to take advantage of young women. She sees him as an abuser like the other men in her life. Also through the montage of the audition his friend asks extremely sexual questions not saying he’s like his friend but it looks like they only did the auditions for sex🤷🏾‍♀️. Butttt all I gotta say abt this movie cuz I just watched it tonight is omg thank god the son pushed her ass down them stairs!😭🙏🏾
