THE KISSING BOOTH Is Stupid And Creepy | Cynical Reviews

  • The Kissing Booth (2018) is another one of these teen romance / drama movies in the vein of Sierra Burgess, and follows Elle, who struggles to reconcile her growing feelings for Noah, who is the perfect-heart-throb-in-every-way-and-if-you-don’t-believe-it-you-must-be-gay, with her lifelong friendship with his brother Lee.
If you’ve seen more than two films in this genre, then you’ve already seen this one, because it does very little that could be considered original, and lazy writing and cliches abound.
Probably the film’s biggest offense though, are elements that kids these days might call “problematic”. It relies on some very outdated ideas about how relationships work, female agency and the power of women to save violent bad-boys from themselves. The sort of ideas that you should not be encouraging in an audience of impressionable teenage girls.

UA-cam just demonetised the video (after I'd already made it public, for f*ck's sake).
    EDIT: Remonetised. Yay!
Sorry this took a bit longer than usual. I hope you find it worth the wait. To make up for it, I'm planning on releasing three more videos by the end of this month.
P.S. Hitler Ice Cream was indeed a real thing. Discovering that made sitting through this film multiple times worth it.
And yes, I know her name is pronounced "El". My bad. I still don't care.

raxahax Sexual harassment was painted as wrong, though.

    • @fatuusdottore
      @fatuusdottore 4 роки тому +59

Cenoreira It really fucking doesn’t. It’s a film. It’s like watching a superhero film and thinking you can fly because Superman does it.
The film is cringe, but even more cringe is people seriously believing that people emulate what they see in films. I loved Requiem for a Dream, particularly Harry and Marion. I didn’t end up becoming a prostitute of stealing my mum’s TV for heroin money, funny that.
It’s a weirdly conservative idea that liberals have for some reason adopted, that “films cause violence,” etc. That’s not what happens at all, and people who are prone to being in abusive relationships often have major issues themselves (I should know, I end up in toxic friendships from time to time due to the time with my abusive mum making me think certain things are okay when they aren’t/forgiving things that really go over the line and even thinking I’m the only one who’s done something wrong, when the other person clearly did wrong too, and in some cases, deliberate damage.)
In my case, I have to resolve the issues that make me attractive to particularly female narcissists, which I suspect have to do with my mum being one/my experience living just under her and having no one else to model what a healthy relationship with other women should be like. Add bullying/isolation to that, and I also have underdeveloped social skills, so in theory, I know what to do, but I am afraid to take action if it involves talking to people.
So, a film like this can’t “make” you think you can fix someone. If you don’t have the family history of abusive dynamics and grew up in a normal/healthy/loving home, the chances of you getting into an abusive relationship are pretty low (it can happen, but chances are you know how you should be treated and you don’t have major self-esteem/isolation/trauma-related mental health issues the predator can learn and later use against you.)
You have to have some vulnerability, because a predatory person won’t pursue anything with someone they can’t manipulate or exploit. It’s like animal predation - they select the sick/frail ones/alone ones, because the strong ones will run or defend themselves/have a support network to defend them (and that’s another thing, if you share friends, the manipulator will absolutely turn them against you by telling them lies.)
So, TL;DR films don’t influence much of anything. Life experiences do. There are patterns to these things that Tumblrinas, with their limited understanding of psychology, don’t understand.
So, while this film is absolute garbage, it’s just a story. You need to calm down. I’ve actually been in highly abusive dynamics (mostly family and some friendships, although I did have one guy I was talking to/romantically interested in show signs of being pathologically controlling, but it stands), and the film is just a film. It has no bearing on real life.

So at my high school, there's a bunch of these hooks on the wall in the girl's bathroom, and all the girls will put their purses with their pads and tampons on the wall, and just leave them there at the school until they need to be refilled. If you don't have one or something, you can just take one as well. So, some guys snuck into the girl's bathroom after school and took a few of the purses and looked through them and stuff. So they found some medication in one of the girl's bag, prescribed medication for her really bad cramps, but there's this policy at school where if you need medication you need to inform the principal of it, so the guys reported her. Now she was only 12 and she had only had her period for a few months, plus the principal was a guy, so she was just too embarrassed to say anything,(personally I think her parents should have told the school about the medication) so she got detention for like a week, but that wasn't really that big a deal to her. Those guys told the whole school that she had drugs or something like that, and everyone believed them for some reason, and she got bullied so bad that she ended up leaving our school at the end of the year. I hate when people make up stories about people and end up making a kid depressed or suicidal and there are no repercussions. This happened a lot where all these rumours were floating around and you never knew what was real or fake.

That's a girls worst nightmare. The movie tries to play this moment off as a romantic kick-starter, but to women, this scenario ends with us in a body bag and a nationwide search.

Some girls at school still idealize this movie and keep telling me “don’t wear revealing clothes” and all this horrible shit.
