Those are only the RF-4EJs. They sundowned the F-4EJs in November but are still using them for test and development

As a kid, I grew up with F4's flying overhead out of Bergstrom AFB in TX. I still remember hearing them hit the afterburn on takeoff and feeling it in my chest from miles away.

During his years at McDonnell-Douglas, my late uncle worked on the F-4 design team. Fantastic aircraft.
I was a Crew Chief on the F4-G Wild Weasle model in the early 80's at George AFB in California. I loved working on these planes!

@@jg54sayaka11 your not wrong the Bis was a nessacary addition and it's a much needed improvement over the SMT. However despite that it's doesn't fix the mig 21's biggest weakness which is BVR combat its radar is still sub par and the R3R is still only useful for close range headons. Additionally the Mig is still unable to carry 8 missiles, and its energy retention during dogfighting is still not great either. Again I'm not saying it's a bad plane but it's still not equal to the Phantoms that spot goes to the Mig 23.

One of my substitute teachers flew the F-4 in Vietnam and F-14. He said both were an absolute dream to fly.
Next add for Muricans : F-15 Eagle with ~50 air-to-air missiles, 6 canons, 3000 ammos
Next add for Blyats : Mig 21 bis TWO with a new cockpit design
Next for amarica will have to be early versions of the f15, the a8 , and the a6 intruder or earlier carrier bombers, mig 23 for east germany tech tree and russia next

I started as USAF crew chief on F-4E after tech school and was assign for 18 months before going into Viet Nam theater, then crew F-4C/D. The Phantom F-4 aircraft was a nightmare for the crew chief, but it was a dream for the pilots. As a young Air Force Crew Chief was proud to work on the Phantom and served my country during the Viet Nam era. Veteran Spoken!

@@theraptors6597 look at the max speed at altitude on the stat card, climb to that altitude in a test flight with clean wings and no gun pod, full afterburner with min fuel and no fuel consumption turned on, wait about 5-10 mins, watch absolutely nothing interesting happen

Hell, the USN, the first operator of the F-4 still lacks an F-4B or J. Both of which had different radars, engines, weapon systems, and even internally mounted flare dispensers.

@@rektangel333 the F-4F would be worse than any of the other phantoms right now because it only carried Aim9Bs (and of course the M61 in the nose since its a simplified very of the F4E) and cant use Sparrows. It only got the ability to use Aim9Ls with the Peace Rhine upgrade but Gaijin is still refusing to give jets all aspect Heatseekers.
@@Fl3iR Still in the long run Germany will have aircrafts like Mig-29 & Su-17 family, even Typhoon and Tornado if Gaijin decides to go that further into the tech tree.

The Phantom was also a part of the century series of fighters, having been designated (at one point) the F-110 (Spectre). I will be looking forward to flying the F-4E.
I'm trying to grind for one, by dad would have worked on British ones as he worked at BAE Warton for many years. It's a very long grind though :( only t3 in aviation.

Can't tell the phantoms apart very well, but what I do know is that I love what came after the phantom and can't wait for it to be added to war thunder, need me to be more descriptive of it? Ok, big, swing wing, two tails, two on record each have had a kill of a Japanese Zero, VF-84 202 and 203 respectively (That was in a movie of course), has also intercepted a hijacked 747, and has done a Canopy to Canopy with a MIG 28 (F-5 Tiger)

P-47 held the name Thunderbolt and was designed by Republic Aviation.
A-10 Thunderbolt II retained the name honoring the P-47, and it had the right to do that since it was built by the derivative of Republic Aviation merged with another company-Fairchild Republic.
For the people complaining about the grind. There's these modes called air assault arcade and Ground assault arcade. It gives massive rewards even if you loose. just kill the enemy and you're set. though you're playing against AI so be careful.

I got the British Phantom FG.1 during lock down and lovely to fly. Took me 11 weeks to grind from the Spitfire Mk.llb lmao

Should have given an honourable mention to Phantoms from the 69th Hammers IAF. The Hammers are the only squadron to participate in attacking and destroying an enemy nuclear reactor, once in '81 in Osiriak, Iraq (with other squadrons), and the second time in Syria. Both times sending geopolitical shockwaves around the world. No one else have done this, not even the US, yet the Hammers squadron have done it twice, so far.

TLDW: Get the MIG-21s. R60s never lose tracking, faster acceleration, better maneuverability, everything. You will never see the F4s top speed ingame, and once a MiG snaps around on you you're dead no matter how fast you're going. Source: hundreds of battles in a spaded F-4C, no use unlocking the F-4E

It's a moot point, any plane piloted well enough can down another piloted poorly enough. We're all aware of the Po-2 versus F-94 maneuver kill. Armor is not a factor in aircraft design, even so-called "armored" planes like the A-10 are only designed to keep the pilot alive long enough for him to eject, the plane will not survive significantly more damage than any other. In fact, its slow speed, low altitude, and weak engines are all a liability in that regard, where the F-4's performance saved many aviators' lives by allowing them to eject in safe locations rather than over North Vietnam. And as always, performance and technology that means you don't get hit in the first place is always better than trying to reduce damage taken from a hit.

They're reasonably accurate considering WT doesn't model malfunctions or maintenance errors that caused a great many of these failures in real life.

They were tested with the Mk 4 Mod 0 gunpod, however in practice this was only used by Marines and only for a very short time. The Mk 4 was horribly unreliable, and removed from service entirely after 1967.

Missed my favourite... :( The F-4F early i am from germany and i have spent four years in the German Air Force.
And during this time happened to work in that exact aircraft. 38+64 flew right untill the end in 2013 at JG71 "Richthofen". By the way, the rear roll rudder does not pitch upwards ;)
Should have also mentioned that the F-4E and the EJ I believe have the “agile eagle” performance package which makes them more maneuverable than the standard phantoms (like the F-4C)

@@migdonalds well I’m not too well versed on the performance of the phantom, but what I will say is that the F-4E does not pull anywhere near 10+G’s early in the battle. However, as fuel is burned (and the plane becomes lighter), it can actually pull that. That’s in terms of physics.
In terms of technology, I don’t know if the phantom has computers and systems that limit the amount of G’s the plane can pull.
@@brycewalker7797 phantom combat turn would pull about 6g. its airframe could withstand up to 9g but it would require an overhaul as it would start to literally pull rivets put of the wings

Flew the F-4 in Nam - three combat tours - mixed it up with a couple of Fishbeds once - no one got hurt - finished up with over 2,800 hrs. in the jet - before I retired from the AF I also few the Viper but my first love was the Rhino - in my opinion the best fighter of its time!
Phantom for germany
I’ve got multiple days worth of gameplay on sim mode in the F4-E. I love it so much. It’s so fun to have the speed to outrun anything, the missiles to defend myself and attack with, a good gun with good ammo, and the ability to carry a wide range of ordinance if the airspace is relatively empty of other top tier jets, mainly the mig21. The mig21 is the only plane I will immediately jettison all ordinance and do everything I’m capable of to try and take him out.
Would be awesome to someday get the greek "Peace Icarus" phantom modification as a german premium. One can only dream!

@@dozergames2395 I would guess that they havent added the F-4F yet, because it would either be completely useless with only 4 Aim9B FGW2s and no flares or OP with four Aim9Ls (which it got with the Peace Rhine upgrade). The standard F-4F would be dead on arrival but if they give it Aim9Ls, it would be way too strong. Gaijin is refusing to give fixed with aircraft all aspect heatseekers because it would be very hard to balance

I have seen a mistake in the video: F-4 had ailerons which could only be deflected down. So when rolling clockwise the left aileron goes down while on the right wing a spoiler is raised. This produced the awful handling characteristics of the F-4 and was one of the cause of its inverted commands above 15° AOA. The video instead shows (min. 1 and 29 sec) the right aileron deflecting up.

@@ffar662 You do realize the Phantom II had the nickname "Leading distributor of MiG parts" right? Not even that, but the MiG 21 was also called the Widowmaker by it's respective pilots... To top it off, the Phantom II has been meta for the paat year now. The MiG 21 is just now good enough with the Bis in game.
@@sethjansson5652 MiG-21s were good enough to combat the phantoms, it was the tactics they were forced to use that made them bad irl. In game MiGs aren’t forced to those tactics. The MiG-21 aren’t even a direct counterpart to the Phantom II and they are still better in a air to air engagement.

After the 1982 Falklands War, the RAF bought 16 Phantom Airframes and named them the F.3 variant. They were based at Ascension Island and RAF Mount Pleasant.
I think they only excluded those because they were nearly identical to the F-4J variant. The FG.1 and FGR.2 had their own variant names from McDonnell following the American scheme, F-4K and F-4M respectively. The old J models sent to the UK were simply named F-4J(UK) as only some avionics were swapped out for British parts, and the planes were later returned to the US Navy.
