Excellent video, Drive. I'm glad that you guys are really getting into the rally stuff and spreading information. You guys are definitely helping motorsport culture grow in America.
take your car rip out everything unnecessary, put in roll cage add crazy horsepower and then drive it through some trees and bushes maybe roll it a couple times, bam you got a rally car.
triangleswinger RC "maybe roll it a couple times..."
Lol "Left 3 over crest; let go of wheel into tree"
This was so long for no discernible reason. Speed up the process and hit the key points and edit out the rest. To get your car ready to rally your going to need X,Y,Z. To install X strip car and do this this and this. Then move on and install Y before finishing off with Z. Put some video together of each step and round off the video with onscreen bullet points of the steps in the build process.
this video is as much educational as entertaining and everything said will have some involvement in rally, and people that are actually interested getting into rally will enjoy this and give them insight on the motor sport. People that watch this might actually compete in rally so the video is very useful.
scooked films I stand by what i said. The video was poorly structured which led to alot of the same point being repeated over and over. How many times did they mention say the roll cage. I am interested in doing rallying one day hence why I am on this video but it was too long for me to take away anything seriously useful because all of the useful information is buried under layers and layers of fluff content. Had they had a structure i.e start with external body mods working from front to back then moved inside the car, it would be easy to follow and you can easily jump back to parts where you need a refresher, but as it stands this video was just all over the place so they never swiftly moved forward to the next point when 1 was covered. Would not call that educational or entertaining, but your welcome to
They stressed the roll cage cause it'll save your life in a roll over or a major crash which happens in rallying. I'd rather have someone stress the same point 4 or 5 times than briefly talk about it for 30 seconds.
dakota wedin You don't seem to understand my criticism. I am criticizing the structure of the video, not it's content. Saying the roll cage is important is fine, however because of the videos poor structure and editing it led to the same points of the roll cage being repeated and the video itself lacking an overall flow. There is no need to stress the same point several times if the topic is explained well and the information properly structured. If you want to know why the roll cage is important you could just rewind back to that point in the video.
These pussões act like idiots.
Love the rally videos. Keep them going! It's hard to find any interest in the Midwest, so I'm glad you guys post these videos! Hope rally surpasses nascar in the U.S. someday
It's nice to see you talk outside of the box. Keep it up man!
Class A 4G welder here...I agree to clean the material and use proper technique when welding.. the metal should be prepared by cleaning the area that is to be welded also check your filaments for proper storage. .avoid moisture oils etc.. use proper amps voltage wire speed etc.. The welds should be stronger than the material being welded together when complete.
Hi, I'm a cwb certified welder (Canadian). Do you weld mostly with regular wire or metal core? Just curious because I'm not sure what's more common in the states
When did Jimmy Fallon grow his hair out?
HOLY SHIT LOL
Doctoberfest598 😂
12:12 .... shitty shitty welds, my god
***** Coz rally car
Dhaval Dinesh
yeah but you still gotta check the weld
if it works who cares
it matters alot. Welds break easily, so its important to have clean, quality welds on a cage. unless you like dying and stuff
Jesus I could drop a better bead with my feet and my eyes closed
This guy is really knowledgeable and he cares about new rally enthusiests
The Subaru Impreza is a classic car! Amazing driving experience, acceleration, handling, sound. Beautiful Machine...👌😀💪😁👍
And how do you know that old man did you even drive one or did you just tell us
Please keep these videos coming. Very informative! With any luck I'll be able to rally in a few years. Thanks!
One of the best informational videos on this subject I've seen. Please, keep up the great work for those of us that love rally!
Great piece guys. Sitting on a Stage 1 WRX that I am looking to retire as a daily driver and make trailer worthy. This helps a lot!!
this guy is a wealth of knowledge...
legit
Very interesting. Definitely agree with using a pro roll cage builder to build your cage. Everything before and after having the cage installed can be done by yourself to save costs. Awesome vid!
An excellent, entertaining and informative episode. Thank you.
18:12 loving the car alarm sounds like Richard Hammond BMW
loving your comment so i knew when to turn down the volume right quick before my ears started ringing.
Awesome how to, thanks. I was just wondering if you can have a rally car with roll cage and harness, and all other minimum safety requirements, and still have it street legal, like driving in the city or to the shops. I am sorry if you guys have already explained, but a reminder and some extra info would be great. Thanks.
not sure if you've got this question answered or not yet but yes. rally cars need to be street legal anyway so you can make a rally car and drive it on the road. I wouldn't recommend it because it's loud and annoying inside the car
Subaru FTW! Love these guys shop and sounds like they have a substantial amount of knowledge. Wonder how much they charge? LOL
Totally a sport I'd be interested getting into in the near future. Currently building an E36 M3 for road circuit events.
I having been thinking about buying and building a Fiesta 1L Ecoboost into a Rally car...even in race trim the thing would be lucky to make 170hp(125hp stock)...I hope Rally America will make an exception to the "no turbo" rule and allow the little 1L three cylinder to have it's glory in the dirt :D It's a way better package than the old 1.6L Fiesta engine.
I laugh when I see hater comments on Leo and Matt, but most of all Mike and JF. At your next day at work go tell the guy who owns the company you work for that you think they stink, being as Mike and JF kinda sorta are the reason /Drive exists and people like Matt and Leo give it authentic quality. These are real car guys doing shows about cars and we get to enjoy it for free.
Matt melts tires for a living but he goes and buys to fully restore a stock DeLorean. And the Ferrari/Porsche loving Brit drools over a big engined Dodge from around 1970. Real car guys.
Compare the authenticity of /Drive to Jay Leno's Garage clips with video editing quality better than all the big names in car journalism. And we get it free.
Maybe for Christmas all I want is for the haters to whine to themselves and leave the comments to constructive statements.
Incredibly informative, entertaining, and filmed in my state! Subbed for life!
2:40 kinda strange to not take the speakers out of the doors before painting... and leave them out.
It's the first really interesting AFTER/DRIVE, thanks.
Like the rally stuff. Show more of the cars. Thanks.
Guys thanks for this! Quite an informative piece of work.
I love this type of thing. Can we get videos on prepping a car for road racing events? Thanks!
so i have an old subaru forester that i want to rally but it has an auto trans could i still use it?
C; Always nice to see a great video from /DRIVE.
which is pretty much everything they make
True... oh so true.
11:53
Those are some terrible welds...
Have just been thinking the same! Alot of holes and splattering going on.
Paul Vroegindeweij 😂😂😂
Great AFTER/DRIVE thanks guys!
I just moved out to North dakota from NY and there lots of back roads where i take my Subarus and have lots of fun this will be a great idea so i can enter a few races.
If you go to rally america's site or the scca site there a ton of info to get you started you can also go to MNRALLY.org to get info on some of the Rally's in Minnesota. Even if you can't afford to enter going to the events is always a blast. You should go this summer with some friends you won't regret it.
I love your programs thanks for all the rally stuff
It'd be nice to see Chris harris do one of these videos for Rallying in the UK
It would be nice to know the cost obvious there would variables but ballpark numbers for the cars obviously those are top notch cages and they don't want to scare people away.
After/Drive should be a podcast on itunes
Great information, more of these videos please!
Broken Motorsports got the medicine for ya.
I really like this channel.
He has an S13 240sx like me! I have much more confidence rallying my car at a Texas Rally Sport event now.
Nice Outback Sport I see there in the background! Love my old subie and hope to someday rally it! 24:52
On your 240sx is there a difference in your drift setup vs your rally setup? Or does the same setup work for both
Circle is actually the weakest shape, triangle is the strongest
they recorded this video in the town where I live!
Why has the sti got speakers still in the door pods ?,wouldn't they be taken out,as driver n navigater would use head sets n team radio's?
Very informative, how much do do the minimum on a 2000 Subaru forester?
I have found out that the min would cost around 3000 maybe a little more
What about suspension. I am looking for suspension kit to lift it enough for rallying so it does not bottom out.
what kind of rally suspension would you upgrade to?
what would you suggested if i want to build a race car but i can still use it daily???
it's not must be rally racing , but rally racing is better.
MOAR RALLY STUFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What music is playing at the end of the episode? It's awesome :)
Awesome video.
Please do the same kind of series for autocross.
I bought a 500 awd 2.2 impreza 95 on craigslist last week in march im put it into 24 hrs of lemons
"Strip and Equip."
having built cars for jwrc hosted Fia homologation inspections etc .. that welding is shite!!
Im not a huge rally fan but what cars these days dominate the rally tracks? Do Subaru's get anywhere these days? sorry for my ignorance.
I absolutely love my gc8 take it off roading and drifting all the time. Rhd boosted rally car? Yes. Please.
what is a list of good rally cars and events in the Georgia Atlanta area??
It's called google
Brilliant subject guys - thanks :o)
Thanks for another good video, but imho, not the great.
I love DRIVE channel, and wait everyday for new videos - This one is somewhat of a lesser quality one. I've been watching till 09:39, and in these 10 minutes all that has been said is : "You need a roll cage, seats, seat-belts and a fire extinguisher."
Questions are being asked multiple times where the subjects give all the information multiple times as a result, making this video really boring.
My post does not come to insult anyone, I really have no negative feeling about any of you guys at the DRIVE channel. Take these words as guidance if you feel that maybe a youtube commenter is actually trying to help!
So does that mean you could use only front mudflap on a FWD??
2:40 rally speakers, nice
Ok so i have a question purely from just curiosity of rumors. The main question i have is i have heard that there will be someone that enters a rally race with a completely stock car ( besides the minimum safety requirements ) but will have a very high end suspension setup. after they inspect the car and see the stage level of the suspension they have to put the driver into basically in a pro class just because of what kinda of setup the driver has for the car.
So i guess to sum up my question in other words does choice of coilover/suspension components really effect that much which class youll be entered in ?
Id imagine if you have a setup like the rumor i just told to you and were placed in a pro class only because of your suspension you would have a hard time keeping up with the high hp guys with fully built cars.
NO that is not true at all. Suspension is "open" in every class. It does not determine you to be a pro or not. It is simply a rule meaning that you can run whatever your wallet can afford. It does not dictate what class you are in. The drivetrain setup mostly determines that.
ok, ive heard external res shocks forces you to be pushed into a higher class because of its dampening capabilities compared to normal coil overs.
Review Guy again still the same. Does not put you into a different class.
ok, nice to have that cleared up.
mate, learn to drive fast
what about using the old porche from the intro as a rally car
"Let go of the wheel and you'll hit something!" Rally in 9 words or less!
Is a 2008 Subaru Impreza 2.5 hatchback
a good base rally car?
2:42 - Maybe take the speakers out for lightness and before painting the inside of the doors?!
Because it still has to be a "production" car
boobyboob69 I don't think it is, otherwise you would need to keep the actual stereo in as well. Or electric window motors etc. The RA versions which are predominately used for building a rally car do not include stereos/speakers as standard.
/DRIVE Let's say I find a really good, cheap deal on a high mileage AWD Subaru. Should I go for that or for a (also cheap) FWD? I'm sorry for asking this, it's just that from the video I got that both are very good and recommended, just didn't get which's best for a beginner.
Thank you,
Arthur.
***** Thank you very much, sir. Although I had watched the first video, I didn't recall that.
Excellent!!! Mooooaar rally.
Maybe one day you guys check our rallycross out in glen helen
never mentioned the material used is it DOM or CroMo?
DOM only unless it is a homologated cage… then it can be t45.
if its atleast 1/4'' wall dom is fine for basic roll over these are still stock cars, now if you planned on jumping the thing repeatedly...(not that the stock chassis could handle it,you talking full on chassis this is just a really nice cage)(for the $ id like to see him use higher grade steal but hey hes got overhead right?) thanks for the reply great show!
Rally prepration; America?
white 240sx s14 zenki in the back 240sx love
I say RACE IT!
Spinelli driver, Parente shotgun!
Reverse that
what wheels are on the gc8 or does anybody know the build thread, I cant find it on nasioc.
they are stock 16" wheels
If you live here in Europe. A grate starter FWD car would be an Aygo/107/C1 (They are all exactly the same) I am going to start building one at it will cost £6K MAX.
what would be the top ten starter rally cars
+Mcgee moo According to Top Gear that would be the Bentley Continental GT.
240SX + Mud flaps = Awesome
You've got it bad in the U.S. Getting in to rallying over here is so cheap, because of the abundance of cheap FWD hatchbacks. Easy to drive and cheap to fix. I wonder what would be the equivalent over there?
Love the comet in the gta 4 spot!! ;)
What Porsche was that in the beginning?
993 the last air cooled porsche
i see a 200sx in the back. damn nice car!
Coupe is beautiful
omg i want one...
Why did they stop making sugar coupes? A 2 door STI would be killer.
Would a cheapo 1992 saab 900 be a decent rally candidate?
Looks? Reliability? Age? Power? what is the problem?
Enter it into a FWD rally, or at the very least le mons.
That aint as easy a car to find as one might think. If we want to talk rwd, I would look at a stripped lincoln mark VIII, a mazda mx5, or maybe a 90's 3 series. The oly real AWD option is a 90's subaru (insert name here).
If we were talking le mons, none of these will do, they are all to expensive. After looking over Craigslist, all I could find that was in working condition was pick up trucks and 90's FWD fords and hondas.
It is not as easy in the States.
Do one about building a drift car
Themayseffect lol idiot...
S14/2jz/turbo/non-locking e brake/stiff suspension/limited slip diff. Done
That cage has so many barely missed nodes my OCD is going nuts 😮
I don't understand why they choose to keep the speakers in and just paint over them. It would only be about 3-5 pound removed but still every bit help so why leave them in?
Times said in this video-- "SO": 1,724 "OBVIOUSLY": 42,010,543
Hey, I need to know what travel is, can any one tell me?
***** oh nice! Thanks!
Lol the circle is actually the weakest shape
I'm guessing the NASA and RallyAmerica and whatever other sanctioning body have updated the CAD design for the cage? Is there a link to the current design regulation? A link to current CAD drawings? Maybe more tech info on what is really needed for a DIY knucklehead like me, (tube material, size, attachment points, ect...) good show fellas.
May be they are using FIA regulations??
those welds are fucking gross, it looks like shit MIG welds, not clean TIG welds like a race cage should be. If you're gonna stake your life on something it should be done to a really high standard, I wouldnt put my life on those welds.
i agree, and roll cage should be a bit simpler, and not directly welded to the car in the lower points cuz could cut the thin layer. and they should reinforce the 4 towers. So this is amateur job, Ed China do it much better and he actually submited it to a real inspector and at least talked about the extinguisher security
so im new so no stupid comments but could you use a 2 seat car in rally america?
You mean like a roadster? I don't think so as they are convertibles. In general all rally cars are two seaters as they are gutted and emptied and only two seats are put in for the driver and co driver. Refer to the Rally America regulations.
You need an exhaust too for cool noise
The camerawork in this video wasn't so good but the content was great.
