"...suspension, brakes and tyres are going to do more for your lap times than power will..." I wanna hug you right now man... This line deserves so many likes.
We were surprised as anyone else watching would be! Genuinely got them for $600 out of a tarmac rally car being wrecked. They are pretty old and rough, but they work.
I love when you do this style of video, awesome job! I just purchased a my98 wrx last year which I've turned into a little bit of a track car. I've ended up spending nearly 10 grand as some things needed repairing. but I've done clutch, brakes, coilovers with corner weight-(made the biggest difference), ad08r tyres and radiator Upgrade(stock one cracked) next I want to tune it not necessarily for power but for reliability, then I'll properly convert it to rwd(rwd spool, upgrade shafts and put in r180 lsd
i remember when your s14 was a budget track/street car from the ignition dvd days. I predict if you keep it within a few years it will be a wild rally car. but great video. love seeing this sort of thing that really shows tracks days are for everyone.
love the idea that you are using nulon = i just brought a 2001 turbo forester and i did all oils and treatments + pedders suspension nylothane bushings and brakes like you - all filters so it feels good to hear you stating everything that i did THANK YOU SIR !
Awesome! I've wanted one of those Impreza's since I saw one for the first time. Then when I heard that awesome sound it makes I wanted one even more. Maybe one day when I have the money I will buy one.
i used to have a 99 gc8 with an 04 sti motor and 1st/4th straight cut gears.. funnest car iv ever had (best handling and fastest) seeing this video makes me want another one!
I wish we had the GC wrxs in the states. let alone finding one for 2200 us $. just to find a 2.5 rs that isint rusted out is like 5-8k we have plenty bugeyes and up but these are straight gold here in the states!
Good stuff guys, I really look forward to your videos. You're putting out some of the best automotive content I've seen in a long time.. Keep up the good work, and don't sellout and become and entertainment show like a lot of others do.
Gc8 wrxs would have to be the best bang for buck right now, I did the same with my last one and it never missed a beat. Replaced it with a version 6 now 👍
had the same problem when I took my clio rs to the track for the first time. Tyres hard as bricks, 6 and 8 years old. Fitted a set of Bridgestone RE070's and went 5 seconds per lap quicker on 4km track.
i love the video, but these prices on the used parts are insane.. 4 used wheels and tires for 300. those coilovers for 600. and the car itself was only 2000$.. thats insane. i need to meet some of the people you know haha
I was under the impression that tyres where a better upgrade than suspension. I think they proved that on Mighty car mods with two brand new gt86's. One with aftermarket suspension and one with high grip tyres. The tyre upgrade was the faster laptime by a decent amount.
What geometry setup you did for this car? I experienced, with a stiffer suspension it is better to go toe out on the front and toe in on the rear. It helps fighting understeer on the front at narrow cornering, but toe in on the rear gives you more stability on apex exits and fast corners and helps you turn into the corner even if you apply throttle. If you have these kind of burst oversteer on the rear this setup can solve this problem and of course a good grip is also important. This is my personal experience, correct me if I am wrong.
Great video... don't know any of the brands of lubs used! Probably well know in AUS. I really like Motul Gear 300 for diff and gearbox, and liquimoly 10w60 for the engine. A MUST do upgrade on a Gc8 is the lower h brace. Any on the others braces don't really do much, but the H braces, is night to day! Have to mention... Ohlins for 600$! wow!
same here... going to pick another one up in this blue like last time and tune it even more;) might go for an estate though and sleeper it? f*** it.. a scooby is a scooby, that engine noise *drools and reminises*.
Love this video, just one question though, Using 4 point harness without cage - isnt that potentially even more dangerous than having simple 3 point seatbelt? I have been discouraged against it when I wanted to put 4point harness on my WRX because some say, if you roll over, the harness holds you so tight it might brake your neck if rolling over?
i want add to list that weight is good and cheap area to improve lap times. I was able to shave off about 80 killo (easy) and -20kg more from forged rims and light battery comparing to my stock weight (light battery, rear seats, bumper bar ballast, spare tire, floor mats, Forged rims)
Would it be possible for you guys to list everything you used to prepare the car for the track? More specifically the oils, flush etc? Will you be posting up more videos on the gc8 later on?
meet up with the boys from mcm Marty will love this car moog also drove one in Japan and loved it 😉😉. true inspiration Andrew wiked car and even better tips cheers from nz
Excellent series Hawko! I have a mate who has plans for his wrx but he insists on collecting parts and making it perfect before actually getting out there on the track. His budget is low so hopefully this series gives him the nudge he needs to have some fun on the track. I personally use HC800 pads as well, amazing!
I use a kumho v7oa on my 98wrx track car in a hard compound and for the price there an awesome tyre. generally find them for around $200 or less a tyre on ebay. I've won 2 club class hillclimb chapionships on the hard compound. My car is very similar to yours with just a little more power and suspension mods.
I'd love to know how many tubes of that nulon gear oil additive you used? I've got a notchy old r154 and used one tube and it helped but i seen you with a few tubes and thought maybe you used a few? any info would be awesome as a few years ago got the marlin crowler shift forks and other bits and the shop said the synchros looked fine, so basically im trying to extend the time untill it needs to come out again
Let's make it official! Strip the interior+ roll cage. Get the same brake pads in all 4 corners because mismatch drives me nuts. Speaking of mismatch. paint right door and fender. Otherwise good work!
Also reverse that hood scoop It only hurts cooling even to the top mount Adds drag And makes the airflow crap Also just go for slotted, dimples or drilled don't really do anything and add wear lines to the pad Slots are really the only thing that release gas and dust
Andrew how many bottles of that smooth shift did you add to how ever many litres the wrx takes, Did you add all 3 and were theythe big or small bottles, Thanks very much
Hi Andrew, love your show! Can you let me know how I can send you one of my Fire extinguisher brackets. I noticed you have your extinguisher mounted to the trans tunnel on the plastic. I sell fire extinguisher mounts that are fully cams approved. Let me send you one! Russ
How do you deal with the oil issue on the bends with a stock setup so it doesn't run dry? Do you overfill the engine? Do you modify the sump? The pick up? Always worry about taking my Legacy for a spin at the tracks and not being able to drive home because I've blown the engine. Cheers!
Stock WRXs, and lightly modified, can handle track use with no mods to oiling system. Be fine for now. All we will add at a later date is an accumulator
Awsome video mates. That sunroof is stock? In the EDM GC8 when it's opened it goes "outside" the car, not imbords like my Legacy (Liberty) RS. Just curious.
Are coil overs really necessary? What about a good shock + spring package, like for example Bilstein + Eibach? Sure, you lose the adjustability but eh cost is maybe 25% of a non-eBay coil over.

Is it totally safe to run the harness like they have it set up here? (bolted to rear seatbelt mounts) I've had people tell me that it's fine, and others say its completely sketchy without a harness bar.
It's within the regulations of CAMS manual. SO many internet experts have something to say. If you do up your lap belt tight, you won't submarine under it, and it is perfectly safe.
Sweet. Use Marty. He wrote an awesome DIY on rslc forums back in the day. Can be done for like 40 with a spare regulated rail hose and t_pieces. Keep up the great work.
i read that long time modern brakepads do not emitt so much gas during braking that slottet or drilled Rotors are even less effektive than Rotors without it

nice find with the suspension
+MotiveDVD beautifull find, was the car also a gc8?
Yes, 2-door STi tarmac rally car
Yeah, for me to build something similar locally it would cost well over 10k, maybe even 20... And thats CAD vs their AUD

How about lowering springs with swaybars?

Also reverse that hood scoop

Adds drag
And makes the airflow crap

Go back to the three point seat belt or get anti-submarining straps, 4 point harnesses are dangerous.

Awsome video mates.
That sunroof is stock?
In the EDM GC8 when it's opened it goes "outside" the car, not imbords like my Legacy (Liberty) RS. Just curious.
