It's an embarrassment that this group is not in the Rock Hall. Crime of the Century is out of this world...
Still considered a ground breaking audiophile LP to this day.
Don't worry too much about the RRHOF. The place is basically Jann Wenner's ego trip. He refused to allow any kind of prog rock in for a very long time. I don't think he's still associated with it, so they have to catch up with all the groups he refused to consider.
It is the crime of TWO centuries that Supertramp are not in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Stupid, why them do not stay in Rock roll of fame ?
A travesty
The one thing about Supertramp is they had a sound all their own, you could never confuse them with anyone else. I remember this album like it was yesterday, I loved the cover art and used to look at every detail of it while listening to the album. What a great time to be alive.
Son bandas que se esxtingueron no hay mas..un fenomeno..
You are spot on. Nuff said.
Sitting in front of the stereo on the carpet in your parents living room, being careful not to knock over your can of 7-UP. "I ALREADY DID TURN IT DOWN, MOM!!" sheesh...
Your bloody well right😊
This album was not only great music, it was coherent lyrics with incredible social commentary. I think it was their best work.
Supertramp should be in the RNR Hall of Fame, And Rodger Hodgson should be entered as a Solo artist.
God I can’t believe this album is almost 50 yrs old what a masterpiece !
Thank you for reminding me how old I am! Lol. I would not have it any other way. Cheer's!
can't believe i'm sixty 😂
Yup.
Ooof we got OLD 😂
45 and grew up on this music.
One of the most unique sounding bands ever
yeah ! every one of them was a master on his instrument ! (Hodgson with both guitar ans piano) and John Helliwell to me was a killer on sax !!
No band compared to them back then.. I mean during the 70's.. I 'm fan of the Sones, Genesis, Fleetwood mac and others but Supertramp were the Best !!
Agree
Agreed. Very operatic in style.
You are bloody well right!
Essa banda era estilo Toto. Não tinha apenas 1 vocalista na banda, alguns se revezavam
Supertramp was probably one of the most underrated rock bands ever....
Played this song for my girlfriend when she was 18 as she was going through a rough time, the words just resonated to her current state of mind, she was blown away by the song and it still one of her favourite bands, we married 2 years later and still going strong for past 44 years.
Love it!!!
Bravo ❤
Me too, great to open up feeling you thought you never had.😊😊
Great story. Nice to know this song impacted others the way it did me. Started to think maybe there was something wrong with me after almost 50 years😊
Great romance!
The 70's had so many fantastic bands.
There was so much emotion in the songs back then. And the songs would slowly build like waves on the beach
It's the last time mainstream artists were able to express themselves freely. Corporate put an end to that in the 80s.
its the single greatest decade of American music.
Listen to Leprous.@@nordicfrost
That glorious era when many bands were able to create unbeatable classics.
I guess we sometimes forget just how good Supertramp was! This will remind you!!
Well said!!
I never will, their music heard weekly in my collection. Just wish I could have seen them more times live.
Very underestimate group seen them at the Royal Albert Hall, several years ago. Absolutely brilliant😊😊
Well, some of you may have forgotton... 😜
Absolute MASTERPIECE, the drivel they churn out today In today's music is nothing short of criminal compared to what was made all those years ago in the 70,s It was very special
Both Rick and Roger crafted their songs so beautifully and the arrangement gave Bob and Doug room to drive them in the rhythm section and John to embellish with backing vocals and stunning sax solos.
Complete agree, the music today is just👹👹👹
Amen.
I went to see them several years ago at The Royal Albert Hall they were brilliant they all played different instruments and vocals. To days so called groups can hardly string 2 words together let alone write and sing songs.
I truly believe part of the “problem” with the young people today is they don’t have the music like we did. …was such a treat to see them live
The first four Supertramp albums are just phenomenal
Depends on what you define as the first 4. This was from the 3rd album of course.
@@DonMacGillivraythey’re probably going off of Spotify which doesn’t include the first 2 albums
@@spruce8611those first albums were interesting
@DonMacGillivray I'm guessing that he is probably referring to this as their first album, which for many people it was. Their first two albums didn't really dent the charts.
Agree 100%
Rap made it into the Rock Hall before these guys. Let that sink in
That's the real CRIME OF THE CENTURY (MILLENNIUM)
No light-show, no theatrics, just musical excellence.
Midnight Special, putting on the most amazing music and artists. I'm so grateful for watching this every Saturday night. This was a treat for my teenage years.
One of my friends was 18....and he went to see Supertramp at some Miami playhouse in 1975....3 days in a row....and he is still raving about they're performances all these years later❤❤❤❤😊
At around the same time, they did a show in Edmonton,Canada, one of the guys had a cold,we didn't notice it in his singing.Anyway they said hold on to your ticket stubs,we will come back in the fall for a FREE concert, and they did!Amazing and Uber talented
This is the song that really got me hooked on Supertramp and Hodgson, I have been listening to all their music daily, almost exclusively, for 2 years now.
Boston had been my favorite band, but with my new found appreciation of Supertramp and Hodgson's solo work, Supertramp is the best ever.
As do I, I have been listening to supertramp daily for over a year, there music inspired me to greater things..
I listen to supertramp every day
@@brendanmcghee If you haven't listened to, listen to his solo work song...'Had a dream/Sleeping with the enemy', and Supertramps, 'Only Because of you' and 'Fool's Overture '
I’ve been listening to the LP albums & CDs of Supertramp since the mid 1970s, and I can safely attest to their music as being a pure and rare gem in the music industry. Thank you for sharing with us this masterpiece.
There will never be an era of rock as great as the 70s
State of the Nation is the State of the Art -bill nelson 79
Started in the 60’s, then 🚀!!
70's and 80's were unbelievable and mesmerizing.
You are so right !
Crazy this was written in 1974. Everything about this song is genius
This is pure gold, by a criminally underrated band.
Probably, the most underrated band ever.
Do you live in Canada?
They were very popular here.
hahahahaha underrated okay
In 1978, Crime of the Century was ranked 108th in The World Critic Lists, which recognised the 200 greatest albums of all time as voted for by notable rock critics and DJs.[
Omg that “word” again…😛
Where do you come up with your belief that the band is underrated?
Hard to imagine producers, managers, etc. letting a band play a 7-minute, emotionally-fragile song on TV like that today - even if it was on at midnight. The sunshade looks like this was from the Crisis What Crisis promotion even though Hide in Your Shell was from Crime of the Century.
Crisis wasn't out yet -- they may not have even recorded it, as it was released five months after this aired. I love that they played a non-single on NBC of all places.
Uma banda extraordinária, até hoje emociona..
Fun to see Roger and Rick sitting next to each other.
Why ?
Fun to find out that the bassist in this band and the PGA President in Happy Gilmore had the same name: Doug Thompson.
I ❤❤ vocals and harmony. This Band is amazing. 😊
One of my fave bands of all time!
As a teenager I felt pretty darn lonely and started playing piano by ear … managed to learn most of their songs after literally hundreds of hours of trial and error (I don’t read music).
Im 60 yrs old (happy with a wonderful life) and get to play/sing often in front of people … it would not have happened without this amazing band to inspire me!!
That’s fantastic to hear my friend. Hearing this after so long makes me want to tune up the fender….Cheers….
Hey Mark, don't sweat it, as a bunch of the greatest musicians can't read music either. I can, but it doesn't bother me that a bunch of people who I sing with can't read it either.
46 years has gone... still love Supertramp and Roger Hodgson
..
Absolutely brilliant! My favourite Supertramp song and it sounded just like the record. Just a shame Hodgson and Davies had their differences that could not be overcome.
It sound just like the record because it's a playback of the record with only lead vocals sung live.
Seems like that happens to a lot of great bands that break up. Their best work are the early albums.
É sonho de toda banda. Fazer sucesso, ganhar dinheiro e depois acabar.
@@nicktamer4969 Yeo. The saw is being "played" but no one is there playing it.
playback
Paris is one of the best live albums ever - fabulous band!
For me, having listened literally to thousands of popular music tracks in my 60 years here, the lyrics (together with the music) from 4:30 on, is amazingly spiritual and uplifting and emotional at the same time.
The "live" version on 'Paris' is even stronger I think.
Thank you, Supertramp, for these few heavenly minutes!
You're bloody well right...
@@k2k273 ...right, right...... 😇
Yes ! among all I've listened to during my "only"54 years of living, I consider This song, despite a few bunch of their others, as the best they did together, and one of th 10 best songs ever..
because of that perfect alchemy you talk about..
No, this is better.
@@kevinmcfarlane2752 You think.......
In many moments of darkness this song was a beam of light.
I loved Bob's drumming on this song, so many changes and he grabs the right space at the right time.
And Doug's awesome bass skills aren't too bad either!
I saw Supertramp (in the early 80s) live in an outdoor Toronto summer show and the one thing that stood out was that they had the best audio sound quality for a live concert that I ever heard. It was loud but with no distortion - it sounded amazing. Lots of power in the sound. And they sounded just like the records - but live. It was great - truly.
Best sounding records . They really cared about the quality of their recordings.
The only word that pops into my head is … masterpiece! Rodger Hodgkins is so emotionally … and plaintively telling a story. He gets my rapt attention. God Bless you Rodger as your music has blessed my life
Hide In Your Shell is definitely one of the best Supertramp songs, and this performance, wow.
The term Classic Rock might have been conceived for this song.
Tunes within tunes, emotional pulls that just won’t let you go, it’s just so good.
Thank you for posting.

The whole album is a masterpiece.
Comparto tu apreciación, me pasa lo mismo con la canción Dont leave me Now . Ambas canciones son geniales!
Roger Hodgson is an even more amazing singer now. We’ve had the opportunity to see him live and it was beyond amazing. His band is fantastic and as I’ve said, his voice is stronger than ever. He still hits those high notes with gusto and perfect pitch. I hope to see him again.
He hasn't played a show since March 1, 2020, when the pandemic hit, the only performing appearance since then was when he attempted to sing in court (!). And I recall hearing some videos from before that where he didn't sound so great. Age catches up with everyone, unfortunately.
The Musicianship and Originality of SuperTramp is Extraordinary! An Underrated Band of the 70's!
Much like Racey and Smokie.
2024, still loving the midnight special
listening since 1976........LOVE THEM
Five guys on that stage. Five guys made all of that music. Back in the day when I would play this song on my turntable I imagined an orchestra or at least many overdubs, but I now know that five expert musicians and singers did that. Amazing!
So true, I imagined the same thing,
A lot of this performance is mimed to the original recording. It's not the same mix - the organ is much louder for instance and you can actually hear the harmonica that joins around 5:10. It's completely buried on the album version but the fact that nobody's seen playing it here is a giveaway. Rick would actually play it live but not here. Also, they never ended with the sax solo and fade-out live, it would end with a repetition of "We're such damn fools" and then end. Another thing that nobody is seen playing is the bongos/congas on the bridge section, and there's a lot of tertiary keyboards in the mix, not to mention the bowed saw.
However, the vocals are live - definitely Roger's, but perhaps the other members as well, and John's sax also sounds live to me. They did sound great when they were actually, fully live but your imagination wasn't wrong; the studio sound was meticulously crafted with overdubs.
Sublime !
Crime of the Century is one of the greatest albums ever.
As a teenager when it came out I must have played it almost daily and it never gets old
Always loved the vocals with this group, the range, multiple instruments.
Great band all around.
Supertramp Crime of the Century was the first record I brought and it still amazes me that as a thirteen-year-old kid I had such good taste as this is still one of my favourite songs
I love this song!!!
These guys were greater than the sum of their parts. This was the real deal; no studio trickery, just pure talent on every front.
Music doesn't come much better than this...
One off my favourite songs of all time , bought this album when I was a teenager
Lyrics are genius. Beautiful message
Oh how I wish I could go back in time and relive this era.
This song and Crime of the century were my favorites when the LP appeared, excellent
Crime of the Century is iconic and for me is the music of my high school years. The song writing and musicianship is bare none top notch! I have also had the pleasure of seeing Rodger at Casino Nova Scotia, he still sounds great, and his is tight. ❤️
What a stunning live performance❤
I loved Supertramp and am so happy for this clip - can never listen to this song without crying, Never. Crime of the Century was the soundtrack of my teenage years. And yes, crying again. But music used to be soooo very good.
i'm tellin ya seeing Supertramp Live in the 70's was as close to a life changing concert you could get, pure Bravo Performance's. All such talented people.
This song has the most perfect transition from verse to chorus.
Awesome to see/hear Supertramp in such great quality. Hopefully the other song performed on this 1975 show, "Bloody Well Right" will be aired soon. Keep up the great work Midnight Special channel!
Hopefully, if they release the full episode.
they are using play back
@@julianbarreras4854yeah that disappoints me because supertramp were a fantastic live band so don’t know why they didn’t play totally live.
I never knew this appearance existed. Shame it's lipsynched, like the 1979 Goodbye Stranger Midnight Special video. They performed live for the BBC on multiple occasions but not here? Weird.
@@Cpayne30 I would not assume that it was taped in the US.
(:
I was fifteen, when in the mountains, walking with this music in my head !!! Bravo.!!!
The entire strength and beautiful power of ST is Rick and Roger together . The first 5 records are untouchable 🎶☮
7
you mean last 5 records...first 2 didnt even make the charts....
Pure, Pure Genius!!!
Supertramp, one of the Best group, all around the World !!! With Pink Floyd, and so on.!!!
*Absolutely epic backing vocals come in at the **5:40** second mark as Roger is belting out the lead vocals.*
*Crime of the Century is a masterpiece.*
Truly amazing band. I saw them live in Edmonton in 1979 for their Canadian tour of "Breakfast In America" I've seen lots of live concerts but that one was by far the best.
I caught the same show in Cowtown...instant fan forever.
I saw them play this in concert. It was epic. Fantastic band. Spectacular, amazing, brilliant.
I was very troubled as a young man and when I discovered Supertramp, I didn't feel so alone. This is the song that got me the most and it gave me great hope my life would turn out better. And it did Thank You Supertramp
Been there.
Lived that.
A good life now. Too.
Datz Goot 👍👍
These guys were Super musicians and songwriting absolutely genius..a staple of the 70s
A truly beautiful song.... it surely did help some lost and lonely souls who found a new dawn, love and happiness ...
Chegamos na decadência musical. Mas ainda bem que temos UA-cam ❤
Still one of my all time favorites Supertramp forever...❤
We saw Roger in 2020 at Mohican Sun, before the pandemic and he was top notch, still as great as ever.
Le groupe que je n'ai jamais cessé d'écouter depuis le début.
The band I've never stopped listening to since the beginning.
I saw them in concert back in 77 and was blown away.
Me too, at Wembley
Me in ‘78 can still picture them
Me too in Manchester 78 best concert I have ever been to.
I love this early progressive stuff. It's so much more interesting than music that came out later on.
I think, it's late for progressive music. Prog-rock development peak was in the early 70s.
@@bluecheerThis *is* prog rock. 1974. I can even hear the influence of Genesis with Peter Gabriel on this song. Two of the greatest progressive rock bands of all time were kicking hard in 1974, Genesis and King Crimson. ✌️
@@bryanrussell9906 I know, but Gregory said about early stuff.
@@bluecheer Late? There was a lot of great progressive music after this came out. Yes and Rush for example had great stuff still a decade later. And Kansas wasn't even a thing when this come out. Operation Mind Crime from another band even later was brilliant.
One of the most underrated bands of the era
Love the umbrella on the set. Homage to Crisis album cover.
Yes!
Actually I think the Crisis album cover was a homage to the stage set
What a amazing bass line !
Over the years since this album came out, my favourite song has changed numerous times, dreamer, school, crime of the century, etc., but for the last 6-7 years this song has been my favourite.
True that!
Totally agree
I was going Signal School at Ft. Gordon Georgia when this came out. Great memories at officers club back then.
If this song doesn't fill your heart with warmth then go get one. Where does one even begin to write lyrics on a person's sub conscious thoughts. Such a masterpiece. Thank you Roger and Supertramp.
Bingo ❤
Omg still a great song nowadays
This was the Midnight Special. Holy Shit!!!!!!!! I have so many fond memories of this time and hold Supertramp so dear to my heart.
Thank you for posting this. It's hard to find footage of this band in '75. Back in 2010 or so, there was a promotional video for "Lady" on UA-cam with the band playing their instruments outside in the snow but the band's owners or someone a major copyright strike and I have not seen that video or any reference to it since then. There were several years where you could not find the band on UA-cam. So happy to see this here. Such a unique band with a sound like no other and it would be such a shame if clips like these weren't available for future generations. They stopped putting the wurlitzer and hammond/additional keyboards close to eachother in '77 and it's fun seeing this stage layout when Rick and Roger were often next to eachother.
Roger's social media team went absolutely crazy with taking down videos in that period. I had a mediocre cover of mine removed...
Un groupe de légende… une grande époque
Got tears in my eyes each time I listen to this song. From a 57 year old who was once like you, a lonely and lost teen in the early 80's.
The best progressive band ever. Please more of them 😊
Love ❤Supertramp so much. Saw them in Concert 1983. Magnificent
The soundtrack of my teens. Love the almost orchestral arrangements. So layered. Genius stuff. A true Supergroup
This is definitely one of my favorite songs of Supertramp , it's simply a beautiful one!
Just fkng incredible. Roger not content to just lip sync (see Goodbye Stranger), but wanting to give a full, satisfying effort. I think he's also performing live on the Rhodes. Vive le Supertramp!
So true what you say but i think the drumming seems to be out of whack. Bob Siebenberg's drumming is glorious but you can tell that the studio recording is being played in unison with the band members.
they're more into Wurlitzer elec piano not the Rhodes.
I'm not sure about the keys but John's sax also sounds live.
Merci à Philippe,et merci à Supertramp.Vous avez embellie ma jeunesse
A true super group I still love their sound as much as I did as a young guy in the seventies, simply awesome ❤
Mon adolescence ❤
great great song
Anno 1976 . Amplificatore Marantz , giradischi Thorens td160 , testina Shure m75 , casse acustiche AR 3 e ......SUPERTRAMP.....perfetto!! Indimenticabili e indimenticati.
Thanks for posting this! What an unbelievable composition and huge sound, especially in the final chorus! One of my favorite songs of all time and so uplifting
A masterpiece of a song from one of the greatest bands of the 70/80's. I'm very lucky to have seen them in concert and they were fantastic. Crime Of The Century one of the best albums made.
it brings back good memories. A show i saw with them, Chris De Burgh was the opening act and he was such a smash that the band asked him to join them for a late encore with all the lights on because the crowd refused to leave...memorable in Montreal.
I just happened along this version by accident. I am so glad I did. I was transported back to when this album released. I remember buying a copy and listening to it for hours. Bitter sweet it is. Oh the memories.
Still is badass every Word.
It's funny how music takes you to a place. I remember listening to this album for the first time in a friends car on his 8-track player. We were part of the high school volley ball team off to a another school for a tournament. He had his 8-track cranked right up and listening to it in stereo in the car was quite memorable. The next day I went to the record store and bought the LP. I still have the LP to this day.
Quel chef d’œuvre ❤❤❤
Remember seeing Supertramp in Stoke on Trent around 1975. Brilliant and probably my favourite Supertramp song
