Fool's Overture - Voice of Supertramp Roger Hodgson w Orchestra

  • Former Supertramp lead singer and co-founder Roger Hodgson wrote and composed this song by himself. He has talked about how when he composed it he always saw it being played with an orchestra. So, seeing it with an orchestra, we are seeing it the way the composer originally intended it. This epic is on the album "Even in the Quietest Moments." Autographed CD at www.rogerhodgso....
Roger is currently on Tour, selling out shows all over the globe. Roger performs his songs in a variety of formats so you can see him at an acoustic show, band show or orchestra. I love them all. Info on www.rogerhodgso... or / rogerhodgson .
Roger Hodgson has been recognized as one of the most gifted composers, songwriters and lyricists of our time. The songs Roger sings that are often referred to as Supertramp songs are songs that Roger wrote and composed alone - that is how he creates music.
Even though Roger and Rick shared writing credit, they each wrote and composed separately with each singing their own respective songs. Roger wrote many of the band's hits while he was still in his teens, before he even met Rick. When Roger was with Supertramp, he would make a demo of the song and bring it to the band for them to learn their parts. Supertramp as a band never wrote and composed together. There were only two songwriters for the band. Roger composed many of the songs that brought Supertramp worldwide acclaim such as Give a Little Bit, Dreamer, Take the Long Way Home, Breakfast in America, School, It's Raining Again, Fool's Overture and so many more. Roger still performs all of the classics and also selections from his several solo albums. There's a Repertoire page on Roger's site where you can read about his songs and how he composed them. bit.ly/1Kfgu0W

See what fans are saying -
"Fool's Overture had everyone mesmerized. The lyrics, sounds, vibe in the room all was magical. Roger had everyone in his hands. An absolutely amazing performance. So much so that as people were leaving, I overheard many say they are already planning to come back next year."
"This performance was jaw dropping. It was like turning the clock back 25 years. Roger's voice was as it was in Supertramp's heyday."

I've said elsewhere that, in my opinion, Roger Hodgson is one of the greatest musicians and composers of 20th century popular music. This particular piece, though, goes beyond even that. For its sheer artistry, originality, and soul-stirring qualities it stands alongside the likes of "I am the walrus", "Stairway to heaven", and "MacArthur Park".

It happens - personality differrences, musical differences, lives move on with marraige, children etc. Life doesn't stand still. He allowed them to continue the name of Supertramp and it was agreed which writer had claim to which songs, it was also then agreed that the remaining Supertramp didn't perform any of Roger's songs and he wouldn't perform any not written by himself. This was adherred to for a while until audiences dwindled for Supertramp because the vast majority of the better songs were Roger's, the band then broke the agreement and played Roger's songs to bring back ticket sales. To my knowledge, Roger never played any of Rick Davies' songs. He certainly didn't when I saw him in London this year and I've never seen any footage of him doing so. His current band is awesome. Long may they continue. If you get a chance to see them live then do so.You will not be disappointed.

I was introduced to Supertramp in the 80' by my brother in law who gave me a couple of his old albums and fell in love with their music but never heard of and thought I never heard fool's overture until very recently when I was in a nostalgic mood and I came across it and 1 section which I remembered clearly but could not quite place it other than a news show I watched. Imagine my surprise when I looked it up and found out it was Canada's W5's theme back in the day.

"Fool's Overture is one of my favorite pieces that I've ever written. It was very magical the way it came together. It was actually three separate pieces of music that I had for a few years and then, one day, they kind of all slotted together in what I think is a magnificent, kind of epic piece of music. I always imagined performing it with an orchestra, so when I did start playing with orchestras back in the '90s, it was such a thrill to play this song. I still get goosebumps to his day every time I get an opportunity perform it with an orchestra." ~Roger Hodgson

    Fool's Overture
History recalls how great the fall can be
While everybody's sleeping, the boats put out to sea
Born on the wings of time
It seemed the answers were so easy to find
    "Too late", the prophets cry
The island's sinking, let's take to the sky
Called the man a fool, striped him of his pride
Everyone was laughing up until the day he died
And though the wound went deep
Still he's calling us out of our sleep
    My friends, we're not alone
He waits in silence to lead us all home
So tell me that you find it hard to grow
    Well I know, I know, I know
And you tell me that you've many seeds to sow
    Well I know, I know, I know
Can you hear what I'm saying
Can you see the parts that I'm playing
"Holy Man, Rocker Man, Come on Queenie
Joker Man, Spider Man, Blue Eyed Meanie"
    So you found your solution
What will be your last contribution?
"Live it up, rip it up, why so lazy?
Give it out, dish it out, let's go crazy
    Yeah!

This is a prime example of excellence. Granted as a fan and collector of all things Progressive Rock past and present, I never really accept Supertramp into that fold, I felt they were a little too AOR friendly to be included in the snobby world of prog rock, So I never really cared too much for them. But this track is PURE brilliance 100% brilliance. One of the best works of the 1970's..

your crab legs an not totally accurate, there is no way they could be perfectly symmetrical. So u R a liar. Sooo sad.

    • @ericlarson9917
      @ericlarson9917 7 років тому +1

accurate has more than one meaning it is not just a statistic of measurements... it can be used to describe other things not perfect...for instance,,,,,,, a second definition of accurate is as stated in oxford dictionaries is { capable of reaching the intended target ] there for if their crab legs can make it to the finish line or intended target they are still accurate,,,,, so if your going to define accurate you should first consulate a dictionary to get your definition of accurate correct or accurate,,, just to set the definition of accurate correct or accurate....LOL

I know I must be getting old when I saw things like...I miss the music of the 1970-1980 period. This was a period of time when putting together a complete album was a work of art. So many great song writers who cared about putting out great work. Today’s music is void of life and feeling...prepackaged crap and audiences gobble it up.
