You guys said I need to keep trying...Ok, let's do this! I am well aware that this machine is not worth the time that I have put into it, except that it is making interesting youtube content and I am learning a lot (which makes it worth it to me.) @@silvergreylion I think strictly speaking, that was Runaway! just at a thankfully low speed and only on #4. It was parasitic burning crank oil even with no fuel feed, fortunately John thinks quick on his feet and was able to choke it out on the intake
YES , rebuild the engine. Heck you pretty much know what you are up against now and I'm learning more and more about diagnosing these old engines. This has been VERY interesting and fun to watch! Thanks for bringing us along Jon. 👍❤️👍
59:19 Keep in mind, when tapping the valves stems and the valves getting better seated, that the valve clearance you set before will get smaller again. Then after a few taps, the valve clearance can be completely gone, so the valves won't go any further to the closed positition, because the camshaft rockers are touching the valve stems preventing fully closed valves. So a recheck of the valve clearance is necessary. Also when heating up the intake manifold, the pressurized gas of the Start Pilote (ether) spray can will cool down immediately the intake again, so you add very flamable fuel, but also lower the intake temperature at the same time. A trick you can use is to use a garden spray bottle filled with some gasoline, and instead of using pure diesel fuel coming from the tank, you can temporary use a mixture of diesel fuel mixed with 10 to 15% gasoline for better combustion. And last, keep a small sheet of wood or cardboard at hand, in case of a runaway diesel engine. I'm curious how many rpms that engine made at 1:03:14 when hell breaks loose😅
Yep, a little bit of gas will help. So happy to see it run. A good digging session or tow a heavy load for a while with some “rings in a can” additive should help. 👍👍👍

She fought hard so it deserves a fitting conclusion. Jon your work arounds always amaze me. I always watch your videos start to finish regardless of length. Well done Sir.
Not sure if someone already said this but add a quart of ATF in the fuel and run that through the engine. That may help the rings. Cylinder 4 probably has a leaky injector. Good work on this machine. Keep running it. It will get better.
Yes that reminds me of my dad telling me that the railroad mechanics use a teaspoon of Ajax to polish or reseat the rings with the individual cylinder wall. Seems to me that diatomaceous earth is an even finer abrasive to use a small amount and start it up. I still use ATF about 1/2 a quart to 20 gallons to keep injectors clean (maybe once a year). My 05 duramax is purring along beyond 270k though the original injectors 😮
This was a good idea before Jon pulled the cylinder head and pistons. He found broken rings and pistons. No quick fixes on this project. If he can't find pistons for MUCH LESS then the $650.00 each that he was quoted he should part it out. His vast number of subscribers should help him find suitably affordable pistons. Keith Ruckers followers help him find some very obscure parts for his much older machinery.
This video was hilarious. I laughed out loud when it started and really shared your excitement. The last time I got this excited was when you scrambled for a fire extinguisher with the lift job.

@@ericvallandingham5113I tested my compression after getting engines running as the rings free up and sealed better. Plus after a full rebuild to see how close I get to oem.
Number 4 might get better once the oil is changed. If it was leaking fuel into the crankcase then the oil is going to be thinner than it should be and that combined with the rings would make me expect excessive smoke. Good work wrestling that thing into submission. I can imagine how satisfying that must have felt.

That "success scream/laugh" when it finally ran on its own must have been the highlight of the year 😅 it felt like that for me through the screen at least 😁
Yours is the most informative channel on UA-cam. I've got an old Case backhoe with the same no-start situation after years of sitting. You just gave me a tutorial on how best to try and get it going. On Captain Kleeman's channel, he restored a 555 Ford backhoe back to usefule life with new rings and pistons, and he didn't even do anything to the bores that weren't in good condition. He now uses it every day and it doesn't smoke. You might be able to get away with that on your John Deere. Thank you again for being a great teacher!
I absolutely loved the maniacal laughter. Nice one John, worth carrying on with the engine rebuild and hydraulic reconditioning. Respect! Have a great new year
I`M 90 YEARS OLD WORKED ON MY BOYS AND ALSO MY CARS, WATCHING YOU WORK IS VERY REFRESHING I ENJOY EVERY ONE THANK YOU SO MUCH, I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO SEE ANOTHER ONE ON THIS ONE IT WAS SIMPLY GREAT.
You can put your solvent in a glass jar and place it in the ultrasonic cleaner. The glass is resistant to the solvents and allows the waves to go through and clean the parts.
What a fantastic episode John, thanks so much for persisting with her and getting her running, watched this with my dad who is a retired automotive mechanic and it was great to see the old school engine. Brings back many good memories when you got her to fire and run. Many would have given up seeing the condition she is in. When you cranked over the engine with the injectors hanging off the fuel lines to check the spray pattern looks like injectors three and four were dripping slightly which is not what you want to see but I would not be concerned with them at this stage. The smoke out of cylinder 4 looks too white to me for it to be oil. When oil burns the smoke has a blueish hue to it. Could it be steam instead? Could water be entering the cylinder via the intake manifold cooling galleries passing the copper crush ring? At the end it did seem the smoke was subsiding the longer she ran. Also could be being over fuelled due to a poorly performing injector. I would fill the cylinders with oil again and let the rings soak again. If you can get the cooling system working you can then leave her running for a good few hours to loosen them piston rings with a good heat cycle.
On a V8 or any V engine, the cylinders do not sit exactly across from each other, there is one side that sits more forward than the other. that will be your number one cylinder.
The fact that the gas tank wasnt bolted down makes me think somebody Tried to fix this issue before and never got it running and gave up without bolting the tank back down would explain why tank is so clean Jon 16:20 @FarmCraft101

It made you fight for it, but you got it in the end! Don't be scared of putting a hot flame right into the intake while cranking.. it normally helps a LOT with starting!
Wow, You did it! That takes a boat load of patience. Why not replace the rings and clean up the valves? I think you would have a nice ole machine. Thank you. Happy New Year!

First you couldn't get it started, then you couldn't get it to stop! 🤣 Nice work, John, well done!
16:57 - Jesus, John! You’re dehydrated!!! No, wait - that’s diesel fuel!! 😂😂😂
I appreciate you for being so thorough and explaining every step in your processes…
I’m sure Mrs. John LOVED this series and likely has to time laundry activities to match up with dozer starts!!
Keep’em coming, brother!!
You may call this a piece of junk...but you began with what was essentially a 10,000 pound door stop and made it run...a very impressive accomplishment!
I am really enjoying this because I learn something new with every video :)
Absolutely great video! I feel your exuberance - so much fun to see it start. I can't wait to follow this one.
Back on the farm we would put a rag on a stick douse with diesel lite and hold at the intake port and crank that's back woods
Well now you got to keep going, make it purr again
outdamnstanding,...i was ready to send you a new motor...but your persistence and dedication overwhelmed me...congrats...well done...thanks for 4k.
You can put your solvent in a glass jar and place it in the ultrasonic cleaner. The glass is resistant to the solvents and allows the waves to go through and clean the parts.
That can cause the glass to break, so keep an eye on it.
When your good, your good John , that was an amazing year end video, I am 58 and I was cheering like a little kid when it finally ran
That was a lot of fun going through that with you, thanks John!
On a V8 or any V engine, the cylinders do not sit exactly across from each other, there is one side that sits more forward than the other. that will be your number one cylinder.
Not strictly true. For instance the Merlin engine in the P-51 has one set of bifurcated conrods. The cylinders are exactly opposite.
The fact that the gas tank wasnt bolted down makes me think somebody Tried to fix this issue before and never got it running and gave up without bolting the tank back down would explain why tank is so clean Jon 16:20 @FarmCraft101
Great work. That old thing is too good to give up on. Looking forward to the test drive now.
Keep going! Keep going!
excellent content John, fresh coffee and a croissant, goes down well, with a farmcraft film. thank you and happy new year from our farm in France.
That starter is a Champ For sure Jon 39:00 @FarmCraft101
im going to like this video just biased off the title. Thanks for another one of this loader.
You can't say that you didn't have fun mate and everytime progress is made is very satisfying,I've got a few basket cases that I refuse to give up on because they teach me to persevere, lateral thinking and the satisfaction of solving a problem far outweighs the disappointment of finding a new one😂😂😂
"John's Towing Service for Heavy Equipment"!
It made you fight for it, but you got it in the end!
Don't be scared of putting a hot flame right into the intake while cranking.. it normally helps a LOT with starting!
Great content as always. Not that there's a poll, but I vote for a full mechanical restoration and then a give-a-way at 1M subs!
Wow, You did it! That takes a boat load of patience. Why not replace the rings and clean up the valves? I think you would have a nice ole machine. Thank you. Happy New Year!
