This guy buys another perilously cheap complex machinery project even before he’s finished his current perilously cheap complex machinery project… and that is why I never miss channel uploads
That oil pump is a common thing that happens with those Perkins engines. Before you go spending a lot of money on replacement parts for that engine you should think about replacing it with a Isuzu 4JG1 it has the same bellhousing and uses the same plastic coupler. There's a great 30 minute UA-cam by Bradenbuildz - "will this cheap Japanese diesel engine save my cat skid steer?" You should check it out. If you want to make content for your channel you could do a rebuild on the Perkins and put it up for a backup engine. In another one of his videos he shows you how to get that spring out of that injector pump using that little side plate BEFORE you take that back housing off.
It’s crazy how you can do all of this by yourself, I guess I don’t have the motivation that you have at my age of 64! Brother! I’m not going to judge you, you do everything at your own pace my friend! Don’t worry about what others think! You’re the man!
I don't know i'm fifty-seven, and I out work , just about everybody younger than me, and the ones my age and older work just as hard as I do. Gen X, I guess we're a whole other breed. But I'm not 60 yet, so we'll see. I could use a break, I've been working since I was thirteen and a half.
By how smoothly those pistons dropped out, I'd say your bores are probably just fine, so you might be able to take the block and crank to a machine shop to see if they can grind the crank and bore the crank journals and then get oversized bearings? It might be possible and not as expensive as finding a new engine (block & crank)?
Agreed! the Block isn't that Bad but rather than oversize bearings, I smell a Possible Collaboration, send the Crank to Abom79 and ask him if he could Spray weld the journals then Machine em back to Spec, that would be Fun, and knowing Adam the end result would be Top Quality.
Does not look too bad. Some laser welding or oversized bearings, some machining and its ready to go again. New crankshaft of course. Here you know what you have, not another gamble with another engine.
I was thinking similar. Take some line boring and crank grinding might be possible. If you can get a Kubota to fit and it's reasonable then you have that option. Some of the Perkin engines are really good
That pump is the modern engineering miracle. It's only just strong enough to work. And when it fails, it's guaranteed to destroy the entire product so you have to get a new one. Excellent.
@@johnbize5736 the thing is you have to notice an oil light, not easy to do when your concentrating on doing the work, as an engineer I would advocate the use of a warning buzzer to draw attention, but from the looks of it those bearings overheated damn quick, probably never got properly lubed in the first place, which only leads me to think it was a rebuild with a cheap pump fitted.
I was just thinking the same thing. May still need new crank as that may be too much to grind off and still get oversize bearings that fit with the align bore.
Light towers typically run a 1.0l engine, Kubota D1005, occasionally a D1105, 3 cylinder, around 20-25hp depending on how it’s built. This skid probably requires an engine about 2x the size, 2 liter and up. Good idea but won’t work.
i believe youd have issues with the governor in the pump with an engine from something like that, theyre not designed to take a variable throttle input, theyre engineered to do their best to stick to the rpm they were designed for and fight any deviation from that rpm...which isnt unuseable in a skid steer but for more than occasional use you wanna be able to throttle down

im gonna lose my mind if he doesn't fix that engine...that engine is damn near pristine. A line bore, clean up that crank if it will and then its just an oil pump, rings, bearings and some gaskets from another 5-10K hours
Muriatic acid will easily clean any material that has “welded” to the crank journals. I’ve had small engines that have thrown a rod that I was able to clean up and polish the crank and rebuild the engine. BTW, there’s nothing inherently wrong with Perkins engines. They’ve been used in many applications for decades, including Massey Ferguson farm tractors. Ask JT @ JT’s Barn and Grill about his Perkins powered Masseys!
Thanks for the video, enjoyed watching. I would go for the engine swap out, from what I could see and hear you saying, that skid steer has good bones to work with, and the way you go about rebuilding machines you would have a life Time Machine on your hands from what I would think, I encourage you to stick with it, best of luck to you.
Matt is back.Yeah. Time for some more mechanical entertainment ! I see you are really good at multitasking. You have a fire burning, kids running around and equipment you're working on. This channel is excellent, I love watching this stuff.
Outstanding diagnosis!! I'm always impressed at your methodical disassemblies - very satisfying to watch. Nice angles for the viewer. Damn but those bearings were smoked, I never seen worse.
Grew up on a farm. We operated 80s era New Holland skidders with DEUTZ air cooled Diesels. Fabulous engines. Our irrigation pumps were all DEUTZ too. They are a modular design, and they are used widely the world over. Some of the most reliable, quality German engineering. Incredibly robust, but very simple machines. A 3-cylinder DEUTZ would be an awesome swap.
You always end your videos with "if you made it this far.." but are you kidding, I love this stuff and so do many others. I'm amazed at how much all these straight fours resemble the old Triumph engines I used to rebuild. Currently restoring a 1970's Kenworth myself so I get the slow but steady approach. Matt, I can't believe that engine had such a cheap assed oil pump. More amazing than anything was how you filmed the job, Ive been a mechanic for 50+ years and I can't imagine capturing the job on camera. And then editing, the hyper drive on the bolts, the commentary, all spot on mate, top quality production with minimum wobble cam. Thanks mate you got me to subscribe from AUS. I vote for the Isuzu replacement in the comment below.
That's disappointing that both Perkins and Cat have such a design flaw. No sense cheaping out on an absolutely critical part like an oil pump! I would expect a higher standard of quality, especially from Cat. But yeah, I hope they enjoyed the $2 they saved... It could be pretty darn cool to swap in an electric motor and some lithium batteries. Depends on how you plan to use it. Run time would be short obviously.
I wish I could show surprise at this failure on a 700 series. Hyster used this engine on 1.5 to 3.2 t lift trucks, saw quite a few failures exactly the same as this. Just not enough wall thickness after machining.
Hi, why do you say the block is scrap? the crank would more than likely clean up or regrind and fit under size shells, what you are looking at bis white metal adhered to the crank and will come off with wet and dry and kerosene, the bores and pistons will go again with a light hone on the bores.
Thank you for your support! I didn't see a reason to put lube in the cylinders because the borescope showed that they were clean and dry, not a likely candidate for stuck rings or overheating.
Woo Whoo…! Another project…! It’s gonna be a long winter, and this unit will fit in the shop/barn… It looks like a “diamond in the rough” to me. Great video, Thank you sir.
I just parted out (2) 3 cylinder Isuzu engines out of welder/generators. Both had rods through the blocks. I believe from the evidence left behind that both engines failed due to rod cap bolts coming loose! No locks, safety wire, not even lccktight for securement option.
Perkins labeled a crap ton of engines for Volvo CE/Penta. Parts cost is a little less. Kubota swap might be doable, I'm thinking that it is going to be a lot of research, to get it to fit. You have the capability, just the timing.
Matt, I really enjoy your videos. You do a really good job. I always look forward to the next one whatever it is. I really enjoyed the Isuzu build, that inspired me to go and get two diesel engines (a detroit 2-71 and a cummins nt855) and i'm having a blast rebuilding them. The 2-71 has all the parts there, just needs a good old fashion rebuild. The nt855 is just the bare block that has been re machined, and i need every part in the book, so basically a factory build. Thanks for getting me going! Been into diesels and worked on them for 6 years, always wanted to rebuild one.
I read the video title and I laughed out loud. Good luck with the project, Matt, your work and videos are always high quality. Edit after watching: put the Rolls-Royce into it. What could go wrong.
YAY! Matt bought the PNWH club a new skid steer! Can’t wait for all the future videos on this! Been with you a long time, Matt. Watching from Atlanta! 💪🏻
I love that you can manage to keep your dog entertained while working without being upset about it. A lot of people get irritated by dogs bothering them, but to those people I have to ask, why have a dog? Oh and cool find on the lil Cat skidsteer.
It looks reparable. It all depends on what you want to do. I'd at least take it to a shop and talk to them. You could have the block done while finishing the excavator.
remove hose connection for parking brake. connect porta-power with gauge at tee fitting. pump up to 300-400 psi. brakes are then released and machine can be slowly rolled.
Like many others have said, I think you should look into having the crank repaired/ground undersize and the block line bored. Does CAT use a different engine in that size skid steer frame for a different model?
you had me fixed to the screen with this one. I was so keen to see what the problem was. I wasn't expecting that to be the cause. All the best in your future ventures.👍
If you end up swapping engines for a different brand, it would be interesting to know how you determined which one would fit and be a direct replacement. Thanks. Regards.
That dozer is amazing looking and your excavator should be fine. I have little to no use for skid steers that are on tires. Yes they do have their place but only because you needed a tire machine on the surface it has to work on. I would steer clear of that model perkins engines.... they are usually great engines but that one is a black eye for sure .... winter is here so your still going to be busy
Loved the dozer and excavator restores (And the hierarchy of unloading equipment at the start, soon to have level 3 - Excavator) Excavator: You dont have to free wheel if i make you airborne.
Nice video, Matt! I was interested from start to finish. Looks like a good buy at $4,500 Lots of options for getting the skid steer working again.... I will be interested to see what you do with this project. Amazing that the oil pump was so cheap / bad... do you want another Perkins???
I own and operate a 226B3 which is basically the same machine but more power (and an enclosed cab with air conditioning). This a great project and you are going to have fun with the machine once it's finished. Looking forward to watching this rebuild.
I work on my junk all day then sit down and watch you work on your junk!!! I would put a lot of effort into an OEM install before swapping it. Especially if you intend to sell. Great video!
Sorry the engine is so bad, but thanks for not dragging it out for ever trying to break it loose like some guys do. I'm sure someone in the know will advise you as to what engine would be a good fit. I'd go for a LS chevy of course.
You’re very good mechanic 👌. And your dog is fantastic ❤️ even if the highly loved red ball, rolled under a moving machine, it stayed calm. A very good boy
That's a Perkins 700 series. Good engine with one fatal flaw, the oil pump. The case cracks on the pump and the engine blows up. If you repair the engine, put it on a low oil pressure shut off, it's easy to do.
Matt! I thought about this for a while. You have an incredible set of Talents! And, I believe You are an Electrical Engineer? I am certain that You are the person who could successfully power that Skid Loader with an electric motor. There are things that the Skid Loader can do, that your small tractor can't. And, there are things that your tractor is better suited for. (Snow removal is one example) And I would guess that around your place the Skid Loader wouldn't be used for more than a couple of hours at any given time anyway. Just a thought!! I would be interested in your thoughts about the idea!! Thanks!! And keep up the Good Work!!
Hi Brother. i watch you from the beginning of your videos. Great Job I think you are really talent. I wish you can pursue rebuild all the CAt anf it will be really useful for future projects instead of the tractor.. I live here in Seattle. One day maybe I can drive to visit you. Keep the amazing work.
Hello Matt: Another "Small" project. (I had a few days wating for parts). Not knowing your situation & budget allotment, I would seriously look at having the current block checked and line bored for new bearing caps. Refitting alternate engines is aLways a real time consumer. As well as a fabrication nightmare. If you were planning on keeping the unit maybe worth your time. If planning on moving it down the road when done they usually sell better if left stock rather than modified. What ever you decide I am expecting it will be interesting and enjoyable to watch.
When you replace the block and that failed pump I'm wondering if you could perhaps strengthen that casting by adding some material? Maybe a few beads of aluminum around would be enough to make it a bit more rigid and less prone to deflection? Probably not though. Honestly, it may be worth having a billet part custom cnc'd for that pump, otherwise you're risking the same failure on a replacement engine.
It’s always good to see you Matt, and watch you figure these things out! I’m not a mechanic but I enjoy watching your content, hopefully you’ll get this figured out and have a good piece of equipment to use! I hope the weather has been cooperating with your excavator project, I understand sometimes you have to take a break from these things and just sit back, relax and think about your next move! Hopefully it’s something simple to fix!
Yeah Matt.... you need better concrete surface for the entry into the shop. By the way, when you reinstall the fuel filters, pre-fill them with transmission fluid, it lubricates the injector pump and really makes it run so much better. It's a old trick I learned from a diesel mechanic. You probably removed about a hundred pounds of dirt from that thing! If you can't find a decent used engine, you can get the crankshaft re-cut undersized and the block can be line bored to spec again. I would also think about getting the rods re-sized also just to be safe. You can probably go 0.30 under on the crankshaft with no problems.
That oil pump makes me incredibly nervous for our skid steer engine. 😬 hopefully between 2000 and 2006 they changed it. Another great video thanks Matt. 👍
What a sweet buy!!!!!! Exactly what I’m lookin for. This should be a fun restore👍👍👍👍 Ohhhh…… Matt from the future 😆….maybe not such a fun build . Sucks how a little pump destroyed the perk🤬
I love how in my head I was like “I seen one of your videos before idk what it was” then I seen the dog and was like ohh “the old rolls Royce engine doggo” lol
Just another great video Matt thanks for sharing. The hour flew by. If you're not in the need for a skid steer I'd say part it out and move on. If you're looking for another project I'd go with another good engine. Once it's running you could always sell it and probably still be ahead in the game.
That was satisfying... Had a feeling that it was going to be a unsalvageable failure when you mentioned that it was a Perkipillar. Good luck with it regardless, looking forward to any updates on it.
I have been watching MartyT from New Zealand for this kind of content (plus the incredible scenery), happy that the algorithm suggested someone closer (I used to live in Laurel, south of Hillsboro.) Funny also that it suggested Bradenbuildz, and last night i watched him pull a perfect Isuzu engine out of an old air compressor, sposedly with cat mating bellhousing. Looking forward to more equipment resurrections.
10/28/24..am very impressed with your 'can do' attitude..finding abandoned HD equip then dis-assembling everything! Then research, new parts, some welding/farm out to specialty machine shops (Area Diesel [injector] Service & others) + sand blast, prime/paint, reassemble, patiently wait for parts...& now > start another
Mustie1 made a good job of putting a different engine into a bobcat skidsteer, Maybe worth a look. Good luck for the future. Love the beautiful german shepherd.
You’re going to want to salvage that block if possible. The cat 3034/perkins 704-30, or also know as a UA 3.0 are ridiculously expensive. They weren’t used anywhere near as much like the 3024, and they almost always threw a rod when they failed so viable cores are scarce. A complete engine will run over 12k. Block will be 4-5k if you can find one. So if you have a good machine shop have them work it over. You’re honestly pretty lucky it failed like it did with no new inspection hole. The oil pump failure like that is how most 3034s died. And no you can’t convert a NA block to turbo, someone on here tried it. Certain oil galleys can be drilled out to match the turbo block but not the piston cooling jets..
I watch Marty T and always enjoy seeing him with his children. I know people can shy aware from showing their children to the world but if you are not one of them I would encourage you to include the family at times. Adds another nice element to videos. Sorry the skid steer turned out worse than you hoped. You would think there would be a low pressure alarm.
If I’m not mistaken the air filter “timer” is actually more of a suction gage. As the filter becomes clogged, the higher suction pulls the gauge in, after you clean or replace the filter, you reset the gauge.
>"I'm sure the engine is fine... why not ?" Heh heh. Was bit of a wonder that it didn't end up in the gulch behind the barn ! I wouldn't shove it the corner. Line bore it, new crank bearings, new rod bearings, hone, new piston rings, new oil pump. Should be an easy-rebuild at that point. Would go back together in a few evenings.
Charley slipping that ball under the tractor tire and making the wheel spin was comic gold lol 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Oh and cool find on the lil Cat skidsteer.
my guy here just made that whole tear down look easy, i know it wasnt but he made it look that way
It looks reparable.
Just found your channel - this episode should be titled "living with danger" -its what made America Great.
Another great video Matt,,looking forward to seeing your best path through to a new skid steer or keeping the one you got..
Loved the dozer and excavator restores (And the hierarchy of unloading equipment at the start, soon to have level 3 - Excavator)
Excavator: You dont have to free wheel if i make you airborne.
Nice video, Matt! I was interested from start to finish. Looks like a good buy at $4,500 Lots of options for getting the skid steer working again.... I will be interested to see what you do with this project. Amazing that the oil pump was so cheap / bad... do you want another Perkins???
What would the cost of a block be compared to line boring the old block and installing main bearing liners?
My bad it does have liners.😅
The dog with the ball 😂
Grabs tractor to pull skidsteer skidsteer is like nope grab dozer i wasn't asking 😅
I own and operate a 226B3 which is basically the same machine but more power (and an enclosed cab with air conditioning). This a great project and you are going to have fun with the machine once it's finished. Looking forward to watching this rebuild.
that block can probably be saved with a LINE HONE. the crankshaft might need a couple journals welded and then ground, check with a machine shop.
🇺🇲🇵🇷🇲🇽😎 ¿ Isn't charlie a girl?
That's a Perkins 700 series. Good engine with one fatal flaw, the oil pump. The case cracks on the pump and the engine blows up.
If you repair the engine, put it on a low oil pressure shut off, it's easy to do.
I have a bobcat t140 and that has a similar oil drain and drains super slow when it's cold.
I like to pull the plug, then go eat lunch or go home for the evening.
@@timothyball3144 Yeah, I do the same
What a wonderful new project. Loved your little helper. she'll be your next trouble shooter. Great work, looking forward to following you.
What an undertaking!!. You did very well. Thank you for sharing. You are my new hero!
Great job sorry about the block very bad engineering Put a Toyota Block in there Love your Videos
Line bore block and a new crank, need to have a machine shop check block and crank
Another great video Mat it’s a shame that it didn’t work out for you super great content
Failed housing did not cause the catastrophe. Running the machine after oil pressure warning was the problem.
The new project has just arrived!
good video and well explained, i have seen him rebuild a small old type bulldozer and he made a beautiful job of that, great work young man.
Great video mate keep up the good work congratulations from Aotearoa New Zealand 👏🇳🇿
Ask Jims Automotive machine shop on UA-cam to do a collab. They could tell you if it can all be reground with oversized bearings
said the EXACT same thing and might contact Jims for him lolol
Might be rather expensive to ship that block and crank to Colorado.
Jim is in Colorado. Greeley I believe. Long way to ship .
@@notajpbout a 30 minute drive for me . But I agree , for Matt cha Ching !
Tractor motors and diesel pretty sure the cleaning guy will know.
From that first video I found of you literally drilling through your fingernail, I subscribed and it’s been quite the content 🤜🏻🤛🏻
Matt, I enjoy watching your videos and don't think they are long enough.
Ive had great luck with case skid steers with the 4bt. Have a 70xt that never skips a beat.
That oil pump makes me incredibly nervous for our skid steer engine. 😬 hopefully between 2000 and 2006 they changed it. Another great video thanks Matt. 👍
What a sweet buy!!!!!! Exactly what I’m lookin for. This should be a fun restore👍👍👍👍
Ohhhh……
Matt from the future 😆….maybe not such a fun build . Sucks how a little pump destroyed the perk🤬
I love how in my head I was like “I seen one of your videos before idk what it was” then I seen the dog and was like ohh “the old rolls Royce engine doggo” lol
Same here 😂
Yes!! A new total rebuild ❤
Just another great video Matt thanks for sharing. The hour flew by. If you're not in the need for a skid steer I'd say part it out and move on. If you're looking for another project I'd go with another good engine. Once it's running you could always sell it and probably still be ahead in the game.
Feels kinda weird being happy when people i don´t personally know is buying an skidsteer...but i am! Extemely happy 😊
You had the same idea as me! Kubota engine!!! Easy to find and usually priced right!
The auction photo showed forks with it. Did you get any when it was dropped off?
There is a note bottom of listing that says fork is NOT included.
Gee Matt I thought you were going to get lucky there. Another project, at least it sound everywhere else and once fixed it should be a steady unit.
I would line bore the block and have the crank turned, that’s why they make oversized bearings. Get new rings hone the cylinders and a new oil pump
@00:01 Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the black round donut thingies are supposed to rotate.
Any chance the crank could be ground and oversized bearings installed?
