As a kid in the 70s,I'd draw pictures with them spider mites by squashing and dragging across the white topped flood wall near my house, with my fingers 😅seeing the harmless little things again, makes me feel quite bad about it now .
Back between 2008 and 2010 I had 4 separate Mondeo Mk2 's I loved them, one of my favourite cars. I had 2 4cylinder 2.0 models, and 2 V6 2.5 Duratec Ghia X models, with the auto boxes. The V6 engine is a wonderful thing to drive, as long as the Inlet Manifold Runner Control (IMRC) unit is working - if it fails, the secondary intake ports dont open and you get much less power when you boot it. The Ghia X was the one to have, had full leather, trip computer, graphic info display where your coin tray at the upper left hand side of the intrument panel is, heated seats, looked so smart compared to the basic LX models. I had to get rid of the V6 in the end as it was just so thirsty round town, I was only getting between 17 and 22mpg, with the auto box responsible for a lot of the extra fuel consumption. Manuals are better, so the ST24 has better performance than the Auto version, and better mpg, but still thirsty though. One of my V6 models was needing the rear exhaust doing, and I bought one from Ford and fitted it myself - they have an extended length system, that runs from the middle box, to an intermediate box at the rear passenger side, and then the pipe comes out of that box, goes across the car to the driver's side rear corner, where there is another muffler and then the tailpipe. Most Mondeo's had one rear muffler on the passenger side, but the V6 had 2 mufflers, but only the drivers side one had the exit tailpipe. I would say a performance exhaust would be best for that car, as the standard exhaust will make the car too quiet, and could be too restrictive on the engine - having 3 separate boxes the gas has to pass through. Would love to see that old girl given a new lease of life as the Mk2 Mondeo is now pretty much all but extinct - going out of production in 2000, so 23 years ago now. The original Mondeo Mk1 celebrates its 30th birthday this year, coming out first in 1993.
Weather was against you buddy! Love your videos! Am registered blind and will never drive, but I’ve always loved a ford capti, and that’s how I found you, and so glad I did! Keep up the good work! ❤
Red spider mites, they are a pain in the greenhouse or house plants, like a spider version of an aphid, don't let them get on your hanging baskets lol. Love the Mondeo! So much is good, it deserves restoration 😊 I'd love to see you do the work, your videos are so interesting and entertaining as well. That thing is screaming for the work to be done. Low miles, good body, good engine. Really nice job getting her up and running, but what a bloody good series it would be seeing this thing get sorted.
So much nostalgia with this. My first car was a 1998 2.0 MK2 Mondeo, which I traded up to my first ST24 at 18 years old. I ended up having to sell that due to an engine failure and a few years later got another one. Owned that for about 4 years before buying a newer MK3 ST TDCI and converting the ST24 in to a track toy and upgrading the engine to an ST200 engine. I fitted a genuine BTCC splitter and the hopes of making it a early MK2 BTCC replica but unfortunately a change of job meant I had to sell the car. To date the 2nd ST24 and the ST TDCI are the only cars I regret selling. I couldn't help but watch this and remember all the common issues such as the arch rust, yet still miss mine so much. Glad to see another one rescued from immanent death. May have to find myself an ST200 now as a second car
I drove one of these around as a "stop gap" when I sold my car and couldnt find what I wanted. What was meant to be a beater for a few weeks turned into months as i actually gave up looking for my desired car as the Mondeo was just so damned good. Awesome engine note, great torguey response and super comfy. After 8 months i found my desired low mileage Saab Aero and parted with the Ford. I wish i had put it into storage as like this one it had no bodykit and i suspect a future classic.
I'd obviously love to see it done up because it's an old fast ford, but it's up to you! You managed to get the Austin cheese wedge back on the road... These are getting very rare now. Great episode as usual!
I really enjoy these found lost and unwanted turning into something someone out there will love to death... I do this from time to time, and find the experience more satisfying than just buying something new, I guess you always put something of yourself into these adventures, that's what makes the difference. I look forward to seeing what you find, you can find stuff where you are that we just can't. And, keep those puns and quips coming, they always make me smile...
I had one the same as this, R reg, same colour, boot version, just the multi spoke wheels instead of the 4 spoke. Loved it and loved this episode. Thanks Ben
I love this shape of Mondeo especially 2000+ models with the ST kit and alloys looks the part. My dad owned a red saloon back in 2001 unfortunately I've never had the opportunity to own one myself but I do admire this shape.
Had a Mk1 2.5 V6 . Great Q car . Looked like anyone else's 1.8LX , wheel trims and all . Boy could it go , surprised plenty from the lights . Great handler too !
I simply fell in love with shape of mondeo, the second I saw it. And absolutely luxurious interior compared to other brands of the time. Beautiful cars, still is
Miss my mk1 ford mondeo. One of the best car's i had early on. 2.0L lovely, fast and huge boot. Miss it, was 18 years old and only had 68,000k on clock. Let it go in 2013. Regret it.
Hey we got it here in the 'States too. Called the Contour, it could be optioned with the 170hp 2.5L V6. Later, the North American performance division SVT released a version with the 200hp tuned V6 (basically an ST200 I believe). They had a cult following, and I knew a few people that swapped in 3.0L versions of the 24v duratec for more TQ.
Fix it , it is by far in better shape than most of the other cars you have repaired on your show ! I am in the USA 🇺🇸 and I owned the sister car to this , I had the Ford Tarus SHO 1997 ! They share the same engine and power train although I had the automatic transmission and yours is the 5 speed ! When these cars are right , they reward you with running really really well and are fast ! And also handle really well with a smooth comfortable ride ! Well worth the cost of repair not to mention how good they make you feel driving it to cars and coffee ! LOL 😆 I would think that it should be very easy too see a nice return on your investment and your time , over what you would see from a standard Mondao without the 24 valve engine ! Anyway have a great time working on it and enjoy working on one of Fords really good ones for a change ! I can't wait for your next show and see you working on a late model classic !
It was panful watching you try and get it running for the first time. I was a Ford technician for many years at a dealership in the US. First thing is the car is the same as a Ford Contour or Mercury Mystique in the US. I was yelling at the tv saying the fuel pump access is under the back seat. Good you finally found the inertia stitch, fuel cuts off in the event of a crash. You do not crank it over and over to get fuel to the fuel injectors, cycle the key for 8-10 seconds at a time a few times then crank. There is also a Schrader valve on the fuel rail to check for fuel pressure. We hated working on them, they were problem cars.
You’ve come this far, would love to see the mondeo all fixed up with a mot. Like previously said she’s a rare beast and potentially a future classic. She looks so good and sounds amazing. As you’ve said the wheels are also immaculate. Good luck and hope you get it sorted 😎👍
What a motor! If you have the time and money I think it's well worth investing in. It will be such a great car! Thanks again for another most entertaining and well presented video, look forward to future episodes. Cheers Ben.
I've only just stumbled on your page in past few weeks and I've throughly enjoyed your videos. I've watched the Audi TT, Ford Capri and this one. My favourite memories of a Mondeo was my grandads Mondeo Ghia that was the same colour as yours. So many happy memories as he used his for pulling caravans, where I used to accompany him, my gran, their dog Molly to various Caravan Club sites in the North-east - your episode was very nostalgic for me. Many thanks matey, and I look forward to your next adventure.
I'm struggling to get my head around the fact that a mk2 Mondeo is now more than 25 years old and in danger of becoming a classic. My (then) girlfriends dad bought one of these new in the 90s and it feels like it was about a week ago 😮
I recently searched up the advert for the Ghia X V6. I remember thinking at the time how cool and modern this new facelifted version looked. It was added to my short list, (which wasn't so short) of cool cars I would buy if I could afford it. 😂
@@Timico1000 My Dad had one of the very first turbo diesel Mondeos Mk1's as a new company car and due to a problem with the inter coolers on them he had to wait an additional 3 months for delivery. Actually a very capable car all in all and a vastly more modern driving experience than the old Sierra, which I had at the time. Time is flying too quickly.!!
I had a MK3 V6 and they're amazing cars for the cash when I got ,my one it was cheap but I had to do a lot to the brakes and suspension components but they do rust and sadly that is why there isn't Meany around so this is definitely one for someone to restore I think you are probably one of the best Channels out there keep up the good work mate
I had one of these ST24's without the body kit around 15 years ago! I ended up getting rid of it when the clutch needed changing as it was going to cost a small fortune! One of many cars I had years ago that I wish I had kept. Oh, by the way, those little red spiders are Clover Mites. They don't bite humans but will eat grass and leaves etc!
Thanks for sharing this video, I really enjoyed it and reminds me of when the mother in law has the ghia version of this V6 Mondeo, oodles of power and torque. I do hope you are able to stick with it and bring this baby to her former glory
The Red things are Fords auto repair nanites , an option on the ST24…. Standard on light speed space cruises after 1997 … perhaps ready for a software update if laid up for 11 years… 🤔
My 2006 Hyundai Sonata 3.3L V6 made 234hp. The lower control arm mounts in the rear rusted out (thanks, Wisconsin winter). I loved the car, so smooth and powerful.
Loved the episode, real tough one with what to do. They don't go for a huge amount of money, personally I would sell, you have an mot stating exactly what the new owner needs to do, parts are dirt cheap, just some time welding it up. Will make a nice car when done. Doesn't need to be done to showroom, just enough to pass and mot. These videos do better im sure that the follow up track one would and so more revenue for new cars.
Awesome episode! Not sure if it's worth saving it unless you really love it though... My dad had an M reg mondeo new as a company car (not an st though) and I have many memories of it, seeing the interior bought it all back! And remembering him pulling over to hit the CD changer in the boot when it skipped, as it did regularly
I had a State Blue ST24 for 11 years. It died of an unavailable part last summer. The thing was like an extra limb to me. Mine was a 97, with the body kit. I think they all came with the kit unless you optioned standard bumpers. In the end it did over 200k, with no engine faults. Pulled like new the whole time. Bloody miss it! I'm only 20 mins into the video, but I'd pull the outer panels of the back seats off to check for rust!
These are great motors, I have had over 50 of the diesel variants in my 25 years as a taxi business owner, would love to see you getting the work done and getting an mot on it.
I had an s plate st25 with no body kit in panther black matalic back in the mid 90s and it was a cracking car to drive and it was a saloon like yours a real wolf in sheep's clothing
I had a 1998 ST24 (skirts etc) and it was an epic car, and I still feel it's the best car I've ever owned and probably driven (those being BMW, Merc, Porsche, Audi..), In 1999 the salesman reversed this off the forecourt and I was sold on the sound alone. I've driven at the top speed of this 2.5 V6 24v monster. What destroyed the ST24 was when they produced the Zetec-S which had the same style body kit, although this wasn't factory lowered and stiffened. If I had the spare cash and found a low mileage and good condition then I'd buy it in a heartbeat!
What a beauty: love the mk2 Mondeo and the rare ST 24v wearing everyday clobber makes it even nicer. Would like to see it sold on for resto if its not your jam Ben. Another cracking video too.
That switch in an inertia switch, basically a ball bearing, in the event of a crash, the bearing moves and breaks contact so turning off the fuel pump. A lot of cars have them under the bonnet.
Excellent video, I thinks it’s good for your channel to do cars from 70’s 80’s because more of us know of them and can relate. Much better than really old cars that we don’t no off.
Niiiiiiice. I would love to see you get this back to full working and MOT pass condition. A lot of work and no doubt money to do but surely worth it. And think of all the fast Ford fans that you will attract to the channel? 😀👍
One thing to check is the imrc is working by reving it and you will see the secondaries moving between the inlet if it isn’t working then removing the plastic panel on the front of the engine and under there is the imrc a sliver box U can open it but make sure u hold the little motor down or you will destroy the cogs that’s if it works They come in at 3000rpm
Excellent thanks for letting me know, i've just read into it, I definitely felt something change and I wondered what it was, almost like a tame V-Tec, very interesting cheers mate!
@@tastyclassics yes that’s it well at least it’s working I own a Mondeo st200 and if you do decided to keep it and restore it I do know someone that has a few mk2s which might come in handy He has anything from standard to st24/st200
@@tastyclassics An interesting and useless factoid. In the US between 1996-1999 we had a model called the Taurus SHO. It's engine was a ~3.4L 32v V8. It's fundamental design is based on the 2.5L V6 in your car, but with 8 cylinders. I think they even used the same windage tray in the crankcase as the 2.5L V6. It had that same IMRC box bolted to the front cam cover to open an extra set up butterfly valves at the base of the intake manifold just like other duratec V6's. Didn't make a lot of hp by today's standards, 235, but it would happily spin to 7000rpm and sounded very awesome doing so.
Wow that mondeo was a blast from the past. I've fitted every pane of glass to one of those back in the day . And how big is the rear glass in a mondeo hatch back , we used to call them turtle shells .
I borrowed my sisters mondeo a few years ago to drive 1500 km to our cottage. It was almost empty on oil and poorly maintained. Had to service it before the trip. Great car to drive but i almost lost a wheel on the way back due to her stepson replacing the wheel nuts with the wront type so the wheel vibrated loose and broke studs. Good cars to drive and the AC worked even after 20 years!
Super ‘Left-for-Dead’, Ben, and well done for at least getting her fired-up and rolling - I’m thinking, time-wise, get her to ‘Tower-of-Power’ readiness then move her on, to someone that could spend the (many) tens of hours required on the welding in particular. Soooooo close to 15k subs, hope this video gets you over that fully deserved milestone ! Keep ‘em comin’! JCHK
first time viewer... not disappointed :P would be nice to see this back on the road! you could sell it on and someone else just end up ragging it round somewhere, gotta be sorted and made roadworthy! good things come to those who wait! great video!
I remember in the early mid 2000s in my late 20s after driving and being a passenger in my mate's pre facelift S40 T4 I was deadset on a fast but inconspicuous saloon. I couldn't afford an S40 but the four big ones on the table at the time for similar ish money was the mk2 ST24, first gen UK Vectra V6, Volvo 850 T5 and the Rover 620ti. All awesome cars that looked mostly like their lower contemporaries but better chassis, equipment and most importantly strong performance! In the summer of 2006 I ended up finally getting a facelift '98 620ti in 'white gold' (just badged as a Rover 600!) and enjoyed it immensely for several years but still always wished I'd had an ST24 at some point too. Memories! I think the little red beasties are Red Spider Mites or Tetranychus urticae. We get loads of the little sods in the back garden! I was going to say front bumper wise it looks like a stock bumper as the ST24 had more aggressive looking front bumpers but after looking at several for comparison it seems the more aggressive styling came in on a facelift in around '98 or so. I also love that you could get these in estate flavour, I do like a fast wagon! P.s. "Is that something's leg?" got me chuckling 😂
These old fords are great my mate used fo have a p plate scorpio cosworth that thing had all the bells and whistles and was fairly quick too i fell in love with it
I bought one of these from a salvage yard years ago it lovely car to drive and deceptively quick if I remember correctly the power steering cooler had a leak and a water pump was a plastic impeller pump that had cracked I had a replacement metal pump done on the driveway easier than I thought to do. It snapped the pinch bolt when changing the rear shocks and eventually what had her back in the scrap yard was a clutch and flywheel failure was more than the car was worth to replace. If there was 1 car I could get back it would be the st24
Fix it! It’s a lovely car, if I had the chance that’s what I’d do! I reckon it would be worth it financially… This is the first video I’ve seen, really enjoyed your style so you got a new subscriber, looking forward to the next one 👍
Rare to see now that hasn't been thrashed and trashed, I had a same year calibra that I sold a couple of years ago and regret letting it go, get it sorted and enjoy driving it!!!
Snap, I’ve just rescued a 1996 ghia x estate auto 47000 model slightly bigger brother to the ST 24 model. It’s been sat for 11 years in the garage though went through the MOT no issues
Fantastic job. It would be great to see more of this car hopefully finished and ready for sale (having had some well earned fun first). Good luck and thanks for a very interesting channel.
Brings back so many happy memories i had a black st24 saloon on a r plate with the rsap kit on loved it till somone stole it miss that car had it 10 years i need another so bad
I forgot to mention mine had over 200k on it when I got it it was a company reps car and it never missed a beat went everywhere and fast ford many times the only problem I had was the imrc on the front cam cover needed to be repaired a transistor failed
This is the same as our Ford Contour SVT here in the United States. One of my best friends worked at a Ford dealership at the time they were released (back in 1999 and it had a 5 speed manual gearbox) and he did a front wheel burnout from the rear to the front of a very large Ford dealership in Brandon, Florida at around 8:00 at night and he didn't know that the owner of the dealership was in the showroom at the time and watched the whole thing...I was in the passenger seat and I worked at the Buick dealership across the street. He didn't last long there...Neither did I at my dealership when a random driver complained about me doing doughnuts and racing him in a 1996 LT1 Buick Roadmaster. I wasnt racing him, I was just accelerating to 90 in a 45 and I never did doughnuts in it, he just added that bit for extra kill on my job. My supervisor even got him to admit that he was lying about that, but I was 16 and my other friend who worked with me was doing burnouts behind the dealership in his 1984 Mustang with the 2.3 Lima 4 cylinder and a 5 speed manual, so my supervisor thought it was me (because he was stunned and couldn't tell the difference between a 4 cylinder with no exhaust and a supercharged V8 with a full exhaust). By the time he walked around to the back of the dealership I was the only one standing there, and I had a 302 Windsor swapped 1994 Eddie Bauer Explorer with an Explorer Express Eaton M90 supercharger kit and BBK headers with true dual 3" exhaust back to 58" Dynomax glasspacks and 12" slant cut chrome tips. That SOB had me cutting fiberglass insulation out of the roof of our ceiling with a box cutter while I had a 3' tube hanging out of my chest due to chemotherapy treatments. I was only being paid $5.15 an hour! I worked my arse off to just be let go by some stunned mindless prick!
Love a Mondeo! Really enjoyed this one, the greener the better 🤤

You’ve got to save it! Beautiful car and so few left on the roads
Another great video. I'd forgotten how much of a Q-car the original Mondeo ST24 was.
It's aged on me really well!
I'd obviously love to see it done up because it's an old fast ford, but it's up to you! You managed to get the Austin cheese wedge back on the road... These are getting very rare now. Great episode as usual!
Love the videos. As for the bugs, they look like clover mites. Harmless to you or the car.
Never seen a british guy look more American in my life haha. Good videos man, I love them.
Regret it.
@ 1 min 25 that was the magic of every video you do. Another nice surprise Ben well done again.
Used to love these back in the day... had a 2.9 Sierra xr4x4i... but went onto small turbo cars after that... loved the v6 rumble ❤
This car is still on the road and passed its MOT in June 2024!
I had one of the last mk2 2.0 Zetec-s.
It was a great car, there’s love out there for this old girl to get restored and loved
I so hope to see a part 2 on this of you restoring it that engine is plenty to want to restore that it's super smooth
My dad had P898 UGE first st24 in Scotland. Different alloys and in black. Loved this car.
Terrible ain't it!
I recently searched up the advert for the Ghia X V6. I remember thinking at the time how cool and modern this new facelifted version looked. It was added to my short list, (which wasn't so short) of cool cars I would buy if I could afford it. 😂
And the Mk1 turned 30 this year, still remember seeing it for the first time at our local Ford dealer, i think it was in January 1993.
Standard on light speed space cruises after 1997 … perhaps ready for a software update if laid up for 11 years… 🤔
🤣🤣
Please do it up, you could do it over many episodes, its a beast from our past.
I would watch for sure
Old fords never die... We jusy weld them back together again.
I had one of these a while here in Germany. It was no problem driving 220 km/h with it. Fast and powerful car.
Love your content bud keep it up 😊
My 2006 Hyundai Sonata 3.3L V6 made 234hp.
Love this generation of Mondeo, you used to see them all over the place. Epic BTCC car too.
Absolutely superb car - proper fast ford of its time!
I had an s plate st25 with no body kit in panther black matalic back in the mid 90s and it was a cracking car to drive and it was a saloon like yours a real wolf in sheep's clothing
All cleaned and running ok and i wouldn't turn it down, lovely motor
I really enjoyed this episode.. need more st24 Mondeo content 👍
Might be a little while but it's coming!
@@tastyclassics all your content is pretty tasty .. Mondeo or otherwise 👍. Keep it up
@@antonsgarage3661 cheers mate!
Excellent video, I thinks it’s good for your channel to do cars from 70’s 80’s because more of us know of them and can relate. Much better than really old cars that we don’t no off.
The red insects are Clover Mites.....totally harmless.
Another brilliant vid and a beautiful motor, well done Ben, mondeo St, great 👍
Mondeo ST24's are rare now and good ones are fetching decent money now. I liked them in blue
Niiiiiiice. I would love to see you get this back to full working and MOT pass condition. A lot of work and no doubt money to do but surely worth it. And think of all the fast Ford fans that you will attract to the channel? 😀👍
Fantastic episode! Remember these beasts when I was growing up. Better times 👌
One thing to check is the imrc is working by reving it and you will see the secondaries moving between the inlet if it isn’t working then removing the plastic panel on the front of the engine and under there is the imrc a sliver box
U can open it but make sure u hold the little motor down or you will destroy the cogs that’s if it works
They come in at 3000rpm
Excellent thanks for letting me know, i've just read into it, I definitely felt something change and I wondered what it was, almost like a tame V-Tec, very interesting cheers mate!
@@tastyclassics yes that’s it well at least it’s working
I own a Mondeo st200 and if you do decided to keep it and restore it I do know someone that has a few mk2s which might come in handy
He has anything from standard to st24/st200
When it was new that was a beautiful car. I had a P10 Primera that was not dissimilar. It is my favourite car out of all those I've driven.
That's it Tim!
JCHK
What an absolutely superb video, you at your very best, keep these " back from the deads " coming, a brilliant evenings viewing .
first time viewer... not disappointed :P would be nice to see this back on the road! you could sell it on and someone else just end up ragging it round somewhere, gotta be sorted and made roadworthy! good things come to those who wait! great video!
Great cars
Former XR3,XR3i and MK2 GTE owner oh and a MK2 Capri.
Love the Ford Falcon XR6 and XR8 thanks 🙏 from down under
I remember in the early mid 2000s in my late 20s after driving and being a passenger in my mate's pre facelift S40 T4 I was deadset on a fast but inconspicuous saloon.
These old fords are great my mate used fo have a p plate scorpio cosworth that thing had all the bells and whistles and was fairly quick too i fell in love with it
I was at Donnington that day in 1998 when Nigel nearly won in the Mondeo from 19th on the grid, happy memories.
Yes I think it would be a great watch to see it sorted, rare car 👍
Thoroughly enjoyed that. Bring it back to life please
"Sweating like a 52 plate ford transit on an MOT ramp". has to be one of the best phrases I've heard this year
Snap, I’ve just rescued a 1996 ghia x estate auto 47000 model slightly bigger brother to the ST 24 model. It’s been sat for 11 years in the garage though went through the MOT no issues
Great video! Would love to see it fixed up! Thanks for sharing!
Fantastic job. It would be great to see more of this car hopefully finished and ready for sale (having had some well earned fun first). Good luck and thanks for a very interesting channel.
The little red spiders are 'Red Spider Mites' or 'Clover Mites'
I worked my arse off to just be let go by some stunned mindless prick!
i had a brand new one of these in 2003 same colour what a headturner
Actually, The Ford Capri was our answer to the Ford Mustang.
Mercury had a Capri in the US, nothing like a Mustang lol. My parents had one. It was a 1972 I believe.
@@senatorjimdracula1603 The Us Capri is not the same as the UK capri
@@RandyDarkshade2 Yeah I figured that out lol.
