  • Today Plant Mister Zen would like to address a question how I adjust the shape of my Ficus Umbellata by pruning. The key points would be revival of the plant by cutting leaves and anticipating new leaves by taking away the growth point on the top. Especially some brunch bending technique will be shared among you to enjoy your unique shape of the Ficus Umbellata.

Here we can go through the ways of maintaining house plants guided by the expert working at a production site from Japan: watering, cutting, reporting, propagation, and an arrangement as BONSAI. Hi :) my umbrellata keeps developing tiny orange spots on the leaves. I’m not sure what I can do to help her. What could be causing this? I’ve tried fungicide but it doesn’t seem to make a difference or preventing new leaves from also developing them. She is indoors in bright indirect light in front of window and I do not overwater. Thank you for your help in advance :)

Hello, if the spot size is > ca 3-5 mm, this would be something wrong, and if this is the case, I would cut all the damaged leaves away to preventing from spreading the spots to new leaves whatever of the reasons. If you are talking about very tiny yellowish spots as needle holes, this may be just physiological nature of the umbellata. I hope that you could sort it out. Good luck!

I was bending mine and went back to try one more time and broke it in half lol. So I'm in your position now, with the top 1/3 of my umbellata chopped off. So I figured this was the best time to try the revival method 🤣. Good luck to yours!

@Kelly Chen oh nooooo!! It took about a month, but my cut piece piece has roots! Dont make the same mistake I made and put it in a too sunny spot, best of luck 😄

Thank you for always watching my videos. If you leave it as it is when it breaks, it may stick to itself. You can also enjoy the unnaturally curved shape ♪

I recently purchased a ficus lyrata that is approx. 6 ft tall. It was on sale because it has severe burning on leaves from neglect and being left out in the hot summer sun. Could I do this same revival process on my fiddle leaf fig that you use on ficus umbellata? Thank you!

Hi, thanks for asking. You can do the same revival process as we showed on the video, however, we would be mindful for some tips as follows: 1) The revival pace is extremely slower compared to ficus umbellata, meaning you would be patient for a long time, 2) your fiddle leaf fig under the eaves with half-shadow would make the leaves colored in beautiful and deep green, 3) Fiddle leaf fig is weak against coldness. Please consider bringing back your plant if a cold season unfortunately comes on the way of the revival treatment. Hopefully your plant gets recovered.

Thank you for your reply and advice. I have repotted it and placed inside in front of a south facing window. I am waiting for it to settle and show some signs of growth before pruning heavily. I hope it won’t be too late in season to begin revival method. Would you recommend supplementing with a grow light when winter comes during revival time? Thank you again and for your great content. 🫰🏽

I am very happy that you follow my way, and a grow light would help something especially in winter. Hopefully your revival works well! Thanks.
