Andy, Thank you for your recommendations on the Suzuki 250SS. I bought the outboard a year ago last September for a repower on my Champion 203 DC and I am really happy with the motor. Andy gave me a phone call to check on me and the motor at the time I was on the lake for its first test run. Because I was in Louisiana and due to the Covid outbreak I was not able to buy the motor from him but he still gave me a call to check on me. What a great guy! Thanks again Andy.

    Hello Team marine
I purchased a 2006 Suzuki, 175 HP, 2.7 Liter 4 strokes 4 cylinder. Owned it for years very happy with it. So far I had to change an IAC one time. To me it's super reliable. By the way got it in 2007 and still going strong, no complaints what so ever. Thanks stay safe.

One big thing I reckon you missed was power/weight/torque the suzuki is 2.05L and 517lbs vs 3L mercury 456lbs. Mercury is going to have better holeshot, carry a load more easily and have better top end. Which if I was buying would be a deciding factor how it performed on water, vs how easy it was to service or rig

I had a 150 hp optimax and it was a good motor. I reported with a Suzuki 225 and I freaking love it. So damn quiet and seems to be a very powerful motor. I know it’s a big difference in horsepower, but the Suzuki seems like a very strong running machine. So far I am impressed.

Merc has a 6yr warranty where I am. That 3.0L block is supposedly very reliable and makes good power to. Haven't run either brand but the 150ss and 150proXS are on the cards when I upgrade the boat.

For the suzuki rigging try using generous amounts of baby powder on the cables as you run them through the grommet. This might help as a dry lubricant.

I have a 2020 Mercury 115 Pro XS on my 2021 Beavertail. I've had THREE power trim and tilts go out on it within 15 months of ownership (took delivery of new boat and motor June 2021). All they do is keep replacing the power trim and tilt assembly but no explanation or investigation into why I've had 3 go out in such a short time. I also had my Idle Air Control seize up at 2 hrs. Turns out it was a factory recall due to a bad IAC part...but Mercury dealer didn't bother to replace the part prior to install. That was an easy fix. The motor has been outstanding but just blows my mind that their power trim and tilts are this bad.

I just burnt my Merc 175 EFI for the second time and am chewing hard on repowering my 1998 Champion 187 with a 4 stroke. Mercury and Suzuki are my top preferences. Have you seen any issues with 4 stokes on the older Champs. I do have twin power poles, 4 batteries, and 2 noco 2 bank chargers in the back. 8" manual jack plate. If I repower I will probably switch to a 6" hydraulic. Any advise would be great.

Too many electronics anymore. I have been a mercury guy for many years. I still love mercruiser in the right situation, but for outboards I would chose either suzuki or Yamaha. Leaning suzuki

Weight might be a minor consideration on an older boat repower. What do you think?

Suzuki or Yamaha. Both good quality. Good maintenance grease job and oil changes they will be trouble for years.

I ordered a new boat with a Suzuki 150. The Mercury was $1200 more and was over $1000 more for white, the Suzuki was $305 more for white. I chose the Suzuki for price and reliability.

Your correct about the reliability!! It's always the same stupid fuel issues and lift pumps with Merc. I'd take Suzuki every day of the week!!

Doesn’t matter which motor a person wants. Suzuki has very limited dealers in On Canada. Lots of Merc and some Yamaha dealers.
Lead time for a Merc is ONE YEAR!!! Forget even getting a Suzuki or Yamaha before 2024. I can’t see dealers staying is business. But I was able to get an estimate price on a 200 pro Merc. 28K. Yikes. Forget it!! I will buy a kayak first. My years of bass boats have come to a sad end.

Always thought the Suzuki 140 was a better outboard than the 150. You can go all over the bayous of Louisiana. Just about everybody and their daddy has a Suzuki 140. And you can’t kill them

So I have 2016 zuki 150 and I live in Utah. My biggest problem is top end speed I have switched props from a 19p to a 17p just to get to the 6k range on rpms. But what else can I do to gain more power. I currently do 38-39gps on a 2016 pioneer 197 islander. Any help would be appreciated. And my elevation is 6200

@ mark wiebner they won't every talk about weight. Suzuki motors are heavy! Also, Comparing Suzuki to Mercury is not a relevant conversation. Comparing Suzuki vs Tohatsu would be a better discussion.

Havr a 2000 Merc 200hp Optimax, having so many issues. Dies everytime put in gear, had in shop almost 5 month saying they're waiting on fuel pump to fix the problem. Finally excuse after excuse & $3000 in labor an 2nd hand parts. Went to pick it up, found they broke starter shaft & 3 days after having it back home & 1 attempt to get on water. Found it still has same problem it did when I took to them plus now graphs, trolling motor , even damaged crap on trailer!!🤬 More issues now then it did when I took to them. Ive had to cancel the rest of the MLF tourn for remainder of the year. Wish I could afford a new Yam. Sho but its taken the last of my 7yrs of savings, & Im disabled so I cant do any the repairs anymore. Do you have any used I can trade same hp for my 2000 Basscat Panterra. 1st experience with Merc & not a fan, & really enjoyed the fuel exp & quite start up of my Yam. EFI 4stroke. Anyway, any suggestion, advice be greatly appreciated. Not but to marine shops within 2 hr drive that would attempt to work on it. Found out the hard way not to ever use one of them..🤬

I went to several marinas down here in Florida looking to see what the guide’s had on their boats and talking to them it appears that there is an awful lot of them getting off of mercury and Yamaha and going to Suzuki for the reliability and the longevity of the motor I myself currently have a 21 foot gambler with a 200 Mercury I will be re-powering this year most likely with the 225 Suzuki
