May 10th, 1996. Former Olympic Gold Medalists Lennox Lewis aka “The Lion” and “Merciless” Ray Mercer collided in a Heavyweight 10 rounder.
Prefight records; Lewis 28(24)-1, Mercer 23(15)-3-1.
Entering the fight, Mercer had wins over top oppositions such as Bert Cooper, Francesco Damiani & Tommy Morrison while Lewis had notable victories over the likes of Lionel Butler, Phil Jackson, Mike Weaver, Tony Tucker, Tyrell Biggs, Frank Bruno, Gary Mason, Donovan Ruddock & Tommy Morrison.
Overall, it was a spectacular action packed slugfest by 2 hard hitters inside a 16’ x 16’ ring with many powerful exchanges resulting in many close and competitive rounds.
After 30 minutes of Heavyweight explosion, Lewis won via MD10 with scores of 96-94, 96-95 & 95-95.
The late Harold Lederman had it 95-95.
Despite the loss, Mercer won a great deal of respect as he put up one of the best performances of his career.
In the undercard, future Lewis opponents Evander Holyfield and Michael Grant won their bouts via RTD5 and TKO4 respectively.
This was supposed to be a tune-up for Lewis in preparation for his showdown against Riddick “Big Daddy” Bowe which did not take place due to the tragic and controversial conclusions of Bowe’s bouts against the relatively unknown Andrew Golota in July and December of 1996.
Instead, Lewis took on Oliver McCall in a rematch for the vacant WBC Heavyweight Championship in February 1997.
Note: Both met for the 1st time back in September 1994 where Lewis who was the 5.5-1 betting favorite was shockingly upset via TKO2 and lost his WBC Heavyweight Title.
In one of the most bizarre outcomes in the history of world title fights, referee Mills Lane had to wave off the bout due to McCall’s breakdown during the fight after he refused to throw punches for a number of rounds as he was suffering from symptoms of drug withdrawal.
As such, Lennox Lewis became WBC Heavyweight Champion for the 2nd time via TKO5 and the only man to have scored a stoppage win over Oliver McCall.

90’s boxing was great. HBO world championship boxing, Boxing after dark. Showtime boxing then later on shobox the next generation. This was a FREE fight. Fans got matchups like this all the time and it seems like there was a big fight every month. Man I miss the 80’s and 90’s. Boxing was great.
I agree whole-heartedly. Nothing could compare to the stars we had in 80's-90's boxing.
Now s#!++y fights are on PPV.
THAT ONE COMBO FROM LEWIS?!?!?!?
HOLY MACKERAL
It started with the right to the body, right uppercut, left hook, right hook......I MEAN WOW.
I can't be the ONLY one who would laugh at Tyson Fury trying to hold up against either one of these beasts 😅😂🎉
Draw. Mercer fought smart.
Those Glorious 90's Were Pinnacle Dayze Of Boxing.. Prime Example Here : 2 Legendary Heavyweight Boxing Top Contending Warriors Throwing Down. 🥊🥊🏆🏆💣💣💥💥🔥🔥💎💎🌟🌟💫💫
Lewis was an absolute monster. This is one of the few fights that proved he could slug with power punchers.
But Mercer won this
Ray won clearly
@@mustafaatalay212 He didn’t win, let alone clearly
@@ReinaldoKyesse no he won, He has been deprived from victory
It's crazy how tough Mercer is Respect to both
Trained well. focused & winner mentality.
Even at 40+ years old it took a prime Wladimir Klitchsko left hook just to make him sit down for a second. Man was a damn tank.
@@donjohnson3888 If you see with attention, Lennox can't even move Mercer. Even at his best shots. It's a fact that Ray was well prepared for this match
@@rcfaudioitalia6110 Mercer was a freaking tank !
One of the most underrated fights of all time. HBO was good in those days until it became political with The cold war and what not. Hyping up unproven fighters and inspiring media and casuals to agree with their opinions about certain fighters. Don't miss HBO but I miss certain eras from the network
Mercer was 2nd only to Iron Mike on power. How anyone survives those blows is beyond me
@@UneducatedGeologistMercer could crack for sure but what was most astonishing was his rare ability to take one on the jaw the same way he could give, power tho id say there was a few guys like Briggs, Tua, Lewis, Peter, Klitschkos, Ibeabuchi, that arguably hit harder in the 90s
I'll take both these fighters over any heavyweight in boxing today!
Mercer was dusting fools in his 50s
No way Mercer is beating Fury.
@@H.K.5 He would have more of a puncher's chance than Wilder
@@sjsouljah7368 Yeah I’m not sure if Wilder could knock out Mercer. In his prime, he had a titanium chin.
Me too
Ray's granite chin on full display..
My favorite Lewis fight.
Jesus how tough was Ray Mercer very close fight and Lewis best imo
Lewis. The best of that era. Period end of paragraph.
Mercer is a goat
I would give it a Draw, even tho Mercer fought better
LEGENDS.
Great fight
It was a brutal and close fight, but Ray Mercer was the true winner, by a modest but clear margin, Ray was more dominant than Lewis and landed more power shots than Lennox, who ended up more hurt than his rival. the final decision of the judges was arbitrary and unfair.

Ray Mercer was clear winner . Corrupt boxing judges awarded win for Lewis.
Lewis denied re-match with Mercer after getting severe pounding from Mercer.
Even it is concrete evidence of that lewis was nothing more than baloon and coward
Thats either a dead tie or mercer won this by a little bit. He landed the harder punches by far.
Great fight.
very close fight
Ray won!!!
Lennox must have been trying to prove a point or something in this fight. He scrapped with Ray, toe to toe. He didnt need to at all. He wanted to, and he barely won imo.
lennox was explanation do this. he say ''this ring smaller than normal. therefore i am fight short distance''
Ray should've bobbed and weaved more
That was a draw
Why did mercer never fight Tyson
Lol the question why tyson didn't ever fight Mercer??
@@earth7551 second career of mike tyson full with shames, he ducked any boxer but evander immediately showed that who king was
Ray has been deprived from his victory, those who claim that Lennox Lewis was greatest have to watch it and shame on themself. Even grand pa Larry holmes has overwhelmingly defeated this guy.
Mercer is good but not good enough to ko lewis, sorry yanks :)
Mercer was damn tough, It's the closest thing to a 96/97 Tyson vs 90s Lewis.
The oponnent who has hit more to Lewis
