Tyson was a shell of himself even by the time they first fought. By the time he fought holyfield he wasnt staying disciplined in training camps and he had long since living like a pro and staying in the gym year round. You could see it by his lack of consistent head movement. Prime mike stayed moving his head and punching off of it. It takes constant and consistent sharpening of that tool to be able to have the confidence and fluidity to bob n weave properly. The constant offense, defense, offense. Using the head movement as defense and as a vehicle to deliver offense takes precision. Tyson just used his speed to get in with fast steps rather than head movement
You know what’s crazy about this fight? This was Holyfield’s come back fight out of brief retirement and who does he choose? The dangerous & capable Ray Mercer
Evander Baer Mercer at his peak. Mercer was in the best shape of his life for this fight. Evander best a lotta fighters during this era whoever at their peak. @@BoxingFightsByGaryWilson
Mercer was doing really good up until the later rounds, where Holyfield took over. Would have preferred to see Tyson vs Mercer before he got a shot at the WBC title.
Holyfield was *never* out of shape and was “as fit as a butcher’s dog”, as we say this side of the Atlantic. One of the bravest greatest fighters of all times, no doubt. Ray ‘Merciless’ Mercer was as hard as they come and could absorb TREMENDOUS amounts of punishment and was very very talented. What a great fight.
Holyfield fought everyone, unlike Bowe and tyson and I came up a tyson, Morrison and lennox lewis fan, but to holyfields credit he ducked no one, and fought so many wars against the best of the best, would've liked to have seen him fight whiterspoon only because he fought everyone else
The announcers had it closer than it was. They were fawning over Mercer’s occasional right hands that were largely parried or slipped and countered with crisp, accurate left hooks to the head and body. Holyfield outclassed him getting the better of every exchange throughout. The judge who gave Mercer 3 rounds got it right.
Briggs & Klitschko knocked Mercer out, albeit an older version, later on in his career. I had Mercer two rounds up before the knockdown, it was Holyfield's rally in the last two rounds that saved it for him.
Holyfield wasn't at his best here but imposed his will on Mercer and dug deep and pulled it out

Holyfield got me to follow heavyweight fighting. He was always the smaller guy, but a true warrior and A total human specimen. Merciless Ray is a badass too. I love the 90’s
Holyfield clearly won this fight. I gave Ray about three rounds. Holyfield was boxing smart and parrying Mercers' jab. Landing right hands at different angles becasue of the lateral movement. The right hands just turned into vicious left hooks and the body shots. The jab stayed in Mercer's face in the earlier rounds on this one.
If fighters are not knockout artists they will need to have staying power in the ring & take more punches over their career. Tyson avoided this punishment by knocking out most of his opponents early in bouts. Holyfield was not a knockout artist & took a lot of punishment.
Holyfield has a great jab, but didn't use it in this fight. Evander used a double and sometimes triple jab in his win over Riddick Bowe. Nice acting job from Mercer at the end 😅 actually pretending to be upset over the decision, as if he was robbed of a victory.
The fight was very close for the first seven rounds, Mercer was arguably two rounds up going into the 8th, the knockdown & Holyfield's rally in the final two rounds edged it.
@peterhaye8537 The fight may have been close on your scorecard,. On my scorecard, Mercer needed a KO to win by the 8th round. But the Ray Mercer vs Lennox Lewis bout was much closer.... that fight could have gone either way.
Tommy Morrison was on the juice and his trainer told Mercer let him wear himself out and then knock him out and that’s exactly what happened. Holyfield is not on the juice and if Mercer thinks that he is he’s mistaken.
@@benji187😂ntm Evander was absolutely on some shit. His name turned up on some juice dealing doctor’s client list at some point in the 90s or early ‘00s and it got swept under the rug

Holyfields skill set, counter ability and IQ was ridiculous He fought literally everyone. Had absolutely NO FEAR. And happened to have one of the best chins ever

Thanks for the video, GARY WILSON
I had Mercer two rounds up going into the 8th, it was the knockdown & Holyfield's last min rally which edged it for him.
Yes Holyfield would often do that during his peak years, the sign of a great fighter
Yes it was very close for the first seven rounds but Holyfield sucked it up as he often did in the closing stages.

Exactly. What fight are these people watching? Really Holyfield put on a display here.
One of the few times l've seen Mercer knocked down .

And it wasn’t really a knock down he was absolutely drained by the courageous effort and relentless barrage from the great Holyfield!
Larry Holmes was one of the greatest of all time. It didn't surprise me when he beat Mercer.
Holyfield fought everyone.
and 40lb lighter than everyone

This Holyfield had never had an easy fight, never...
Would have loved to see Mike Tyson vs Ray Mercer.
That would have been a dream fight
Who do you think would win man

Classic boxing fights are the best! Hands down
The ref in the Morrison s Mercer fight was an idiot. He shoulda stepped in four punches earlier. He should have been fired
17:07 apparently Holyfield been fighting since 1886! 🤣
Holyfield would have killed Uysk if he was around today in his prime. Don't make them like this anymore

Ray mercer always needed that one extra gear..
Tommy Morrison didn't realize that he punched himself out and was caught and knocked out.

Woulda scored it a draw. Pretty even. Mercer knocked down. Holyfield exhausted with badly cut eye

Ten round fights suck.
Holyfield has a soft spot on the side of his head and a couple times when he was punched by Riddick Bowe he fell down
