I wouldn't listen to this cover for a long time. I'm a huge Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails fan. But, when I hear Nine Inch Nails' version now, it isn't the same. This IS Johnny Cash's song now. Him pulling the cover over the piano keys at the end speaks so loud to me!

    • @karateman302
      @karateman302 2 роки тому +12

In an interview Trent gave after this cover came out, he basically said this was Johnny's song now. No anger or frustration over the fact that the cover overshadowed the original...just a realization that the lyrics he wrote resonated more purely with another.

Trent Reznor spoke to me as a Young Man and Johnny Cash rip my soul out as an old man and showed it to me I know I'm not the only one so what did you see when he pulled yours out don't tell me just see it for yourself

I agree with you 100% and tent remote himself saying what he said legitimizes this was saying meant to be sung by Johnny Cash. And I agree with you with the closing of the piano, and epic epic ending

The way he lightly runs his hands over the cover after he pulls it down reminds me of the times I’ve seen people do the same to coffins. It feels like he’s saying goodbye in so many different ways.

Johnny was my distant cousin. He had struggles since childhood. Blamed for his brothers death, addiction, bad boy reputation but he was a Legand. A voice like no other. He loved June with his whole heart. He died within a few months of her death...maybe from a broken 💔 😢.

When Johnny closes the piano lid forever, it is as if he is closing the lid on his coffin. I believe he knew his time was near.
Johnny could always put his emotion into his voice and songs. We get you Johnny. "What good does it make, if you get your Empire, only to lose it all in the end? It's all dirt."

This is a cover, but he did it so amazingly well. If you know anything about his life, it makes this song even more heartbreaking. This was done shortly before his wife died. He died not long after her.

Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails wrote this song and was initially furious when Johnny Cash decided to cover it, but after he listened to it he said that the song now belongs to Johnny Cash. When Johnny Cash's daughter Rosanne heard the song she told him it sounded like he was saying goodbye. He said that he was. He knew he was dying and, sure enough, he passed away 7 months later.

He did a great job with this cover. I don't think anyone else could have gave it the raw emotion he did. It's so well done it feels like it's his song. I liked the nine inch nails original but he owns it now.

The video was shot in his home and that was his wife who happened to come down the stairs to check on him, so they put her in the video as well. She died a few months after this video was filmed. Johnny lived a few month past her and passed away within a year of filming this video. He wanted to put out one more song to provide for his family after he was gone. His house in Hendersonville TN (my hometown) in which this was filmed was bought by Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees. During renovations, the contractor who had just put a fresh coat of varnish on all of that wood in the home. Varnish is very flammable and so while it was airing out, something sparked a fire which destroyed the house.

Don't think this'd provide for his family as royalties'd go to Rezner. Plenty of quality back catalogue'd do that anyway. Could live off A Boy Named Sue alone!

5:20. Johnny's wife standing over him is SO powerful because she knows that this was her husband's "Swan Song." What no one knew at the time, though, was that she would be the one to die FIRST a few months after this video was recorded. June died May 15th 2003 and then Johnny followed on September 12th 2003. 😢

Johnny Cash opened up about his addiction to amphetamines, barbiturates and alcohol in the late 60's. It was why he wrote a multitude of his songs.
His official cause of death is complications from diabetes. I fully believe once his wife June died he just gave up.
She co-wrote Ring of Fire about her then friendship with Johnny(they were both married to other people at the time).

I've been watching hours of these reactions to this unbelievable farewell song. And each time I'm left with tears streaming down my cheeks. It's like a divine hand reaches through all of our hearts and pulls our pain away ,through the pain that Mr. Cash most masterfully conveys to us. Many times the word "Masterpiece" is used, but seldom really lives up to that lofty standard...... This certainly does.

This is a cover of a Nine Inch Nails Song. It was originally about drug addiction, depression and possible suicide. Johnny Cash repurposed it as a song of regret, apology and farewell. It was the last time he opened that piano.
Trent Riznor (writer) of Nine Inch Nails after watching the video said "It's Johnny's Song now".
The Johnny Cash version is very powerful.

I love this cover because I think Johnny conveys so much emotion and meaning in it. He really fought a lot of demons in his life I think stemming from his feeling of low self worth being that his father thought more highly of his brother than little J.R. After Johnny’s brother was killed in a horrible mill accident I think Johnny wished it was him instead of his brother whom everyone adored. I think he felt he was the black sheep of the family. In the video he takes you back to Dyess to the house he lived in which is now a lovely museum. He came from a poor sharecropping family and struggled I think until the day he died but I feel he did his best and was a talented songwriter/singer. The best artists, I feel, are always the ones that go through the most adversity because they bring truth to their words and tone and make their songs believable. Loved your reaction!

This is actually a cover of the song written and performed by Nine Inch Nails. When the writer and the rest of the group heard Johnny was going to do the song they were like (not exact response but you get the idea. "no way an old country singer could do this song written about the struggle with drug addiction." But when they saw the video they were in awe how he had made such a powerful thing out of it in such a different, but fitting, perspective. That perspective of a man who has lived a long life that was full of regrets. When writer even went so far as to say that Johnny made it his own song. This video was made just a few months before June passed away, Johnny followed his wife within 6 months. Not too long after they both passed that museum that was a real museum for years before closing a while before the video shooting, I don't know when before. But it burned down. That house he was walking around, as far as I know, is the childhood home I think in Dyer, Arkansas that had been restored after that footage and is now part of a Johnny Cash festival when not pandemic times. Living in Arkansas USA I catch it being talked about occasionally when they mention it on the state's news programs.

Good, bad, or indifferent we are the sum total of our life's experiences. Change one, you alter the whole. At a young age I learned to cherish my pain in equal measure to my joy. How can we truly know one without fully knowing the other. We are our own worst enemy, and still yet those that love us, love us in spite of ourselves. I'm a old man now. I've been half way around the world and back again. I've seen and done things that most can only dream of. Unlike Johnny I would change ....... Nothing.

Johnny Cash is a legend. He had a very difficult life , from losing his brother to an accident, then to struggles with addiction. His wife June and her family helped him overcome that , oh and I believe he amd his father had a rocky relationship but not 100 percent on that. This song was actually originally done by 9 inch nails , but I think it applies to Johnny's life so much. I think he is feeling old wounds in this song, maybe pondering on what meant the most at the end of the journey of his life, maybe regret and wishing he could trade all the fame and fortune for a chance to go back and do it all differently. This is just my analysis tho. Love your videos.

Being a fan of Johnny Cash and aware of his back story, his trials and tribulations, I found this rendition certainly epitomises his life. Almost like his own eulogy. The closing of the piano at the end, for me, like many other fans, signified the closure of a coffin.

You must listen to “orange blossom special” - many artists have covered it. The song does have words, generally known as an instrumental. The orange blossom special is the name of a train. Charlie Daniels and Roy Clark each have great versions!!

Please reconsider "Ring of Fire". His TV appearances from the 60s have a very different feel (guitars and brass) from the Home Free version.

The Hound and The Fox featuring Adam Chance (from Home Free) do a fantastic cover of this song!

I'm excited! I need a distraction from life right now. I just found out on Saturday that a REALLY good friend of mine passed away from covid 19 the night before. I'm all torn up about it, so this timing is kinda good, but also bittersweet. My friend loved country music. He had a UA-cam channel where he played and sang his own country music with his guitar and everything. He was obsessed with George Strait and Reba McIntyre, and I always thought he'd be the next big country star to come out of our town (San Antonio, TX.) But he's gone now. But the fact that you've cared so much to notice my comments and react to something I care about makes me feel a little bit better and I need that right now. God bless you, Mr. Taylor.
