This was Cash's goodbye song. He knew he wasn't long for this world. Legend has it it was the last time Mr. Cash opened that piano. His wife June Carter died 4 months later. Johnny passed 3 months after her.
Cash was a Country Music Star in the 60’s to 70’s. He sold out large venues. Known as “The Man in Black” he came on the scene after doing a show at Fulsom Prison for lifers and everyone else. The gold record in the video is “Fulsom Prison Blues”. Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails who wrote the song said after listening to Cash’s version,”It’s now Johnny Cash’s song.” He was blown away by such a legend as Cash covering his song and more so by the song itself.
Johnny Cash was a great and prolific artist but he was becoming an afterthought at the end of his career. Then, literally, this was part of the last project he ever did. Who gets to have a 60 year career and then go out with the best thing you’ve done? What a triumph.
This isn’t going on your playlist I suppose. This is a masterpiece. The way he caresses the piano lid at the end is crushing. Most of his other work is much lighter. Recommend his early song, Ring Of Fire.
Legend says it was the last time he ever opened that piano. He knew he wasn't long for this world
This song was originally written & performed by "Nine Inch Nails". It was written about drugs & depression. But Johnny Cash's version is considered the best. His version is more about regret for past mistakes in life & realizing material things & fame mean nothing in the end. When the video was filmed in February 2003, Cash was 71 years old & had serious health problems. His frailty is clearly evident in the video. He died seven months later, on September 12 & his wife, June Carter Cash, who is shown gazing at her husband in two sequences of the video, had died on May 15 of the same year.
Part of his regret was drugs, so he identified with it. Johnny did more drugs, and wrestled with that shit than most. That is why he agreed to do the song in the first place. He felt it.
You got it wrong. Was written by Cash in the late 70s and performed first at the Grand Ole Opry.
@@danielgerald4551, you are high if you believe that. 🤣🤣🤣
@@danielgerald4551the was written by Trent reznor by nine inch nails
There is a story, it could be true or not I can’t honestly say, that Trent Reznor watched this video and version and after said ‘this is his song, now.’
After hearing this...his daughter said Dad, it sounds like you are saying goodbye...he replied, I am
Honest, genuine reaction. That's awesome
I grew up in his heyday
The more people in your generation that hears it, the better. Cheers
I think when u reach a point where this song lifts u up, you've evolved.
I love Johnny cash
Johnny Cash , The Legend. Johnny had his problems in life like everyone does . Even though he looked mean at times his children said he was great father that loved his children and he and his wife ( June ) had a sense of humor. His wife was also a talented musician and she had an up beat lively personality. She could get people laughing 😂.
Legend, and a great song towards the end of his life
Respect for you and Johnny Cash!
Ace; All you had to say at the end of the song... "Ladies & Gentlemen, Johnny Cash"
Trent reznor's of nine inch nails version was about addiction and depression. Johnny had both and his version as well but his version resonates with people much more because it's about something that affects everybody which is the great equalizer: death. This was a man at the end of his life after a very long career since I believe the 50s and just enormous fame, but he also knew his health was failing and his wife was dying. But that is death, it doesn't matter who you are or how much money you have or where you live. You can be a millionaire, or you can be a bum on the street living in a cardboard box. Death is still going to visit you both equally. And when you take that final journey you can't take the people you love with you, any more than you can take money and fame. The best line in the song is at the end when he said if you could go back he would keep himself. Johnny was a simple country boy who loved God and music. But he had to change himself, arguably sell his soul at least in his estimation, to become marketable by the label sell so many records and become famous. But that also brought addiction and depression and doing bad things and chasing off the people that he loved and that he now regrets. Because of the end of the day the only thing we can take with us our memories, and our integrity and our soul. Don't give that up for anything or anybody. That's the lesson. This was his goodbye.
I'm sure you're gonna hear this a zillion times, but this is a cover from the harrowing Nine Inch nails album "downward spiral" which chronicles a characters decent into depression and madness. Its worth listening to the original out of respect AND because it's an amazing and honest spiral ride in itself.
This was a Legends Swan Song
Sometimes you need the backstory to truly appreciate the performance. This song is a perfect fit for Cash even though it’s by Nine inch nails.
A boy named Sue! It’s a fun one
Hear "Main in Black" and "Sunday Morning Coming Down"
Beautiful reaction dude, got a subscriber
Cash really is an "everyman." He always wanted to be a "good" person but had flaws and had to fight them his whole life. He did music with drive, dark songs, and some of the great comedy songs (A Boy Named Sue). He was dedicated to his art, truth, and a strong sense of justice. You could easily spend months doing reactions and not cover all he had to say or his influence on music.
Regret, remorse and acceptance.
I grew up with Johnny Cash and June’s family the Carters. Time has passed so quickly.
The black and white clips in the background are him throughput his life and career. He was troubled yet brilliant.
My favourite Johnny Cash song is “Man in White”. It is worth a listen for you and your viewers.
Zombie by the cranberries
The pain is real
The picture in the background and the woman sitting on a porch (?) is his wife and love of his life, June Carter Cash, who had died. The movie Walk The Line with Joaquin Phoenix (Johnny) and Reese Witherspoon (June) is the story. Its excellent and exciting, check it out. Try Ring Of Fire by Johnny Cash. Or Folsom Prison Blues (?) Much more upbeat lol
This video is the most watch video in You Tube history. It's had over 200 million views and that doesn't count the ones by reviewers like yourself. All those might add another 100 million. His rendition of the song is by far the most profound ever recorded. it was originally about drug addiction and Cash had that problem in his life. Even though he was near the end of his life, he completed 60 more songs before his death.
I know, there are no words. Be true to yourself, I enjoyed your channel.
It rips your soul
Johnny Cash had a lot of tragedies in his life growing up, and when he got famous, he wanted to give back and he use to do live performances at the prison, check out his song, man in black.
Don't be scared. Life happens. I know.
PAIN
Great reaction my friend.
There's a lot of of punch to the gut moments in the song and video and you can make a case for each one being the best.
But the one for me is when he's pouring out the wine and looking into the camera. His eyes go through me like a blowtorch. Like he's saying, this is not just my life flashing before my eyes, it's YOURS. Time for us all to get right before it's too late.
On that note, it's no coincidence that Jesus makes an appearance not long after...
@acetheheart Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails was the one who wrote the original version. Johnny Cash asked to do it and pretty much make the song better. This was Johnny saying goodbye because he died shortly after. He died from a broken heart his wife June Carter died 4 months earlier
Not the best place to start with Johnny Cash this was the last thing he recorded before he passed. Try " A Boy Named Sue" it is closer to the beginning, so much talent. Enjoy
A couple other moving songs to react to: the living years by mine and the mechanics. Nothing compares to you by sinead O’Conner. In your eyes by Peter Gabriel secret world live tour
P.s so where do you go to listen to happy music, ? Sorry I an ass , just saying, I see where you sitting.😊😮😅 Hey I gave you a like.
Listen to a Boy Named Sue 😅
U so cute
This kid doesn't read the comments??
It almost seems (no offense) like the new generation wants to hear something that 'sounds good', as opposed to REAL MUSIC w/emotional resonance. BTW...this is not even a Johnny Cash song. It's a cover.
Sorry dude, but you should have already known about the legendary Johnny Cash 😮
Why is UA-cam pushing every black exaction of this lol?
Interrupt less…and talk less when you do interrupt, please.
Friendly advice
Many thanks for your sweet deep sensibility, Ace The Heart! Yes, to live is really not easy!

Johnny Cash started out in the 50's, I think he came out with I walk the line, about 1955.
