Anyone who doesn’t cry while watching Johnny Cash’s “Hurt” video doesn’t have a heart.
I have watched this hundreds of times and always have a tear or two. The whole production and Cash's voice just draws me in
It's honestly sad that showing any emotion as a "man" is looked down on.

I think that's kinda an ignorant thing to say that for a music video about depression/drug abuse lol. The people who have a hard time crying tend to have a hard time working through emotions, some are hurting so bad that they can't even cry to anything anymore.
"I hurt myself today, to see if I still feel" -not being able to cry is a sign that you aren't feeling anymore, makes you feel hollow(not the case but that's depression mindset at work) "Try to kill it all away" -not crying is a resistance to the pain, like drug use or addictions. "But I remember everything." "Beneath the stains of time, the feeling disappears. You are someone else, I am still right here." -despite your best efforts to push down the feelings, and even when the feelings are "gone", you are still the same, your pain is still there unresolved and you still remember all of it. You're just numb to it at this point. So ironically, the people you say don't have a heart are probably the ones this speaks to the most. Broken hearts are still hearts, though I'm sure most people who won't cry realize how futile resistance to pain is, embracing it is how you get through. You carry so much weight on your shoulders by not releasing some of it.
The older you are when you watch this, the harder it hits you. All the fame, awards and money made in John's career meant nothing at the end of his life. The message for me is not look back and feel like you've wasted much of it. I've watched this video a hundred times and still cry 🙏🏼

This song is probably the best example of emotional pain in this form.
It's funny that when the songs are not very clear with the meaning, a little bit abstract, it can be felt different ways. Originally this song is about drug use, but when it's sang by Cash and with that video the song gets another meaning.
I can't watch this without rolling tears. It makes more sense every decade and hurts more. Johnny left us with a gem even though its a cover. God Bless you Johnny!

I'm 64 and cry every time I hear this song. It's the most poignant song that's ever been performed. His wife, June, died a couple months after this performance and Johnny followed her a few months later. Christ and June rescued Johnny from his addictions. Powerful song.

@@EvolvedComics the deep connection Johnny had with June could be see in this video. She was on the stairs looking at him, wondering if he was okay and why he was still working on this video / song. You could tell their connection by the look in her eyes. She passed a few months after this. Johnny's daughter watched the video and said "this looks like a goodbye". Johnny replied "it is". He died shortly after, joining June Carter Cash in Heaven with Jesus.
This might sound weird but sometimes we, as viewers, can connect better with whoever is making the reaction video when we see them show emotion - and not be embarrassed about it. It is what it is and this is a beautiful cover of a very deep song. It's not an easy listen though is it? Your reaction showed that you felt it and that in itself is something special., odd as it might sound.

I hate how this song isn’t an easy listen, I really hate that I love it. Too many thoughts pop in my head each fucking listen.
I was just saying this to someone else ... I firmly believe that Johnny knew he was nearing the end, which I'll explain here. The woman in the portrait was his mother who had passed, but the woman behind him (on the stairs) was his wife of 35 years, June Carter Cash. In the video, she seems to have worry in her eyes ... for him. She died 3 months after this video was filmed on May 15th, 2003, he died 4 months later, on September 12th, 2003. Were they saying goodbye, and if so, how did they know ??? Something I just read said, when his daughter saw the video, she said (I'm paraphrasing here), "Dad, it sounds like you are saying goodbye". He replied, "I am".

Unfortunately for you, you picked on the wrong person to correct. I don't open my mouth about anything unless I'm 100% sure about it, unless I precede my statements with a disclaimer stating something to the effect that I am speculating. I do a LOT of research on everything, and usually have at least 3 sources to back up my statements, if not more or unless they don't exist.
Now, I believe the picture on the wall was of his mother. I'm (*** overdone disclaimer ***) not certain about that, but it makes sense that would be his mother, as she seemed so much older than he did, AND because the woman behind him WAS his wife, June Carter Cash, and she didn't die until May 15, 2003 (same year as the video), from complications following heart-valve replacement surgery.
She was surrounded by her family, including her husband of 35 years, Johnny Cash. Johnny died on September 12, 2003 ... 4 months later, just as I said.
Now, not only am I immensely familiar with what JCC looked like over the years, but his daughter, Rosanne Cash, who I'm NOT that familiar with, is only 66 now, which would have made her about 47 at the time of her parents' death (this video) ... hardly the age of the woman standing behind him, in it.
Even IMDB states the following:
Johnny Cash, who was 71 years of age at the time of filming in February 2003, had serious health problems. His frailty is evident in the video. He died seven months later, on September 12. His wife, June Carter Cash, who participated in the video (shown gazing at her husband in several sequences), died three months after filming, on May 15, closely preceding him in death.

When Nine Inch Nails recorded this song, it did not convey the true pain that Johnny brought to the song. When Trent Reznor (the writer of the song) heard this version.........he said it was a Johnny Cash song now. This was a brilliant reaction.
When he first heard it he felt weird about it because the song was so personal, but after watching the music video he said it was Johnny's song
Totally agree! It's not their song anymore...it was his in the end 100%. It toughed him so much and literally described his life to a T. He was one of the greatest but made many mistakes that he regretted along the way.

This is a dying old man, who realises all his past failures, and sadness he put his loved ones through, wishing he could go back and had another chance to redo things and make it right. He'd give up anything to do it, his fame, fortune, and all of that for just one chance to go back and change things.
At least that's what I get out of it.

And not trying to be preachy, but if you look at the Christian imagery in the video, with the nails, the "portrait" of Jesus, etc., and notice the lyrics about wearing the thorny crown upon a liar's chair", it will help to interpret that particular part of the song. If, as a Christian, you find yourself wearing the thorny crown upon a liar's chair, you have been unfaithful to your faith, and have done things against the beliefs you profess to hold (This is purely my take on this!) "Keeping" yourself in Christian theology, means trying to abstain from anything that will separate you from a right way of living. The obvious things from the lyrics and the video are too much alcohol and drugs, though there's so much more involved, I think. But the idea to me is that some of the things he remembers from the past bring him sorrow, and perhaps shame. And if he could do it all over again, from a million miles away (a completely fresh start without all the circumstances that led to his mistakes, imo), he would "keep himself" or abstain from those things that caused him and the people he loved sorrow in the end, despite how hard it is...he would find a way to not let them down...to not hurt them.
That's just my interpretation of the song. But it guts me.

I watch reactions to this music video probably more than any other. The reactions always connect on such a human level and it feels so connecting regardless of race, religion, gender, background, etc. That being said, I think this guy's reaction to this song is my favorite of all of them. The part about getting caught up in work and trying to make things happen, doing what everyone thinks you're supposed to be doing, all the while missing things and missing people... that resonated with me on such a deep level... music, it's the universal language of our humanity.

His wife June Carter Cash, also an amazingly talented hugely popular singer died not long after this, and it literally killed him, he died shortly after her. He loved her more than life and I honestly believe he had to be with her again and that this life stopped mattering to him.

One country song that makes me tear up every time without fail is a song called _'Til You Can't._ I have a bad habit of putting things off, and that song resonates with me. Since I first heard it, I've been more motivated to do things with my family when I otherwise would have wanted to spend that time alone. I feel myself retreating to be alone, then the moral conflict that my family wants to spend time with me, and the thing that turns me around to sit down and watch that movie or play that game with them are the words "til you can't". You don't have all the time in the world, and neither do those you care for the most. You can put off doing things with them, or even just talking to them, over and over because you're too busy...until you can't. I love songs with powerful messages like that.

The song rocks your soul. You feel it deeply. I've watched several reaction videos for Hurt and your reaction is much different than the others. I've heard the song and seen the video countless times and can feel the tightening in my chest and the burning in my eyes with the first lines. You're not alone, man. You're not alone. My dad died in 2013 on cancer...he loved Johnny Cash. We played a few Johnny Cash-Songs on my dads funeral. And this song was one of them. It goes deep...so deep all the time!!! This was his last gift to us before he passed away and what a gift it is.his emotions jump through the screen to make you feel what he feels.

His version of the song is about his regret for the hurt he caused his family by focusing so much on his career. It's a call to focus on the things that matter.

I don't normally comment on music channels, but I appreciate you being open with your feelings. Most men don't. So, wanna give you an example of what johnny is saying. I can totally relate to him. My son committed suicide 17yrs ago. He was 15 years old. For 17yrs, I've lived with regrets. What I could have done different, things I should have said, shouldn't have said. My son knew how much I love him. That's one thing I don't have regrets about. We told each other numerous times a day. I don't have much, but I would give it all away to have him back. Or if I could look into his beautiful brown eyes one more time. Short of selling my soul, I would live in a tent just see him and talk to him. IF....
I am so sorry. My 2nd daughter had/has some anxiety depression problems. Was/is our biggest fear for years now. She's doing a lot better now. Still will have bad times. But I KNOW she Knows I Love her. Her and her older sister younger brother know. They also have no problem telling each other. We do what we can. The easiest/hardest thing to do is to make sure that they KNOW that. Forever.
Thank you for having the bravery to post this. Nothing compares to the grief of losing a child . Especially to his Mother. I would tell you to stay strong but I'm sure that you have heard this more than once. Easy to say, much harder to do. Just know that there are people out here that know what you are dealing with and have the utmost empathy for you. /the pain never goes away but it does become more tolerable over time. Bless you.
To me the original version by Trent Reznor comes from the perspective of the young man going through it all and Johnny's cover comes from the perspective of the man who has already pretty much gone through it all... yes, that was June Carter, his wife and saviour... can't help but shed a tear any time I listen to this

😥 Like you and so many others, I'm always powerfully affected listening and watching to this. Trent Reznor of band "Nine Inch Nails" wrote this. Said was one of the greatest compliments of his life to have someone like Johnny want to record his song. Trent said when he first heard Johnny's version he hadn't really had time to process it. But then when he saw the video he nearly broke down it was so moving.
Johnny's own son told his dad he liked the song but "it just seemed so sad" like he was "telling the world goodbye".
Johnny said - "I am"
Johnny left us shortly after.

It’s absolutely amazing what Johnny manages to accomplish with a guitar, a couple keys on a piano, and his voice. Anyone who reduces music to ink on a page or notes on a chart is undeserving of calling themselves a musician. This is what beauty in music is.
Damn, this is one of the first times I've been hit emotionally by the reaction and not just the song. That it hit you so hard by the end you just make the video stop instead of going through the standard UA-camr good bye was some powerful stuff and really caught me off guard. Never be ashamed of your emotions, feeling them or showing them. We all have them, and anybody who would make you feel lesser as a man for expressing them isn't worth the time of day.
I feel you son. We ain't so tough when our skin is ripped away and our hearts are exposed. More of that and less tough guy posing would go a long way toward healing. Music is such a beautiful thing. It can make you feel everything. I love the “empire of dirt” line. Basically everything he built, his wealth, legacy and accolades mean nothing.
Music is supposed to move us. Certain songs hit us in our emotions. They are meant to. This song was originally N.I.N's (Nine Inch Nails) Trent Reznor never expected it to be this emotional. 100 % real reaction, man ! Can’t count the times I’ve watched this video with tears rolling down my face .The picture on the wall was his mom. I get hit the most when his wife June is standing on the stairs behind him, by the look on her face she is feeling the pain he’s dealing with ! Then when I found out his daughter said “dad this song sounds like you’re saying goodbye” and he told her I am , damn brother that’s hurt ! Especially when he closes the lid on the piano like a coffin.

One of the toughest songs and toughest music videos to get through. Gives me chills every time I hear it. I was not a Johnny Cash fan, though of course I knew a few of his songs. And for a guy like Johnny, who seemed to know he was near the end of his life, to take someone else's song and make it SO PERSONAL is pretty amazing. Trent Reznor was exactly right. It wasn't his song anymore. It was 100% a Johnny Cash song. RIP Johnny.
The photo of the older lady on the wall was his mother. He also lost his wife of many years. The House of Cash that they show, was a tourist attraction/museum where much memorabilia was kept. As you can see, the business went under and was closed. The Columbia record they zoom in on was recorded live at San Quinten prison. The video also show him going back to visit the old home places where he grew up; now dilapidated. He is sitting at a bountiful table, but without the people he loves, it means nothing. Just an empire if dirt. All of the decadence means nothing when you have no one left to love. The image of his shaking hand pouring out the wine over the feast, is just heartbreaking. After the song ends, he closes the lid on the piano as though it is the lid of a coffin. Overall, a very sad ending to the life of a great recording artist.

It's a musical legend singing his own eulogy. It's hard not to connect with someone who already sees the reaper staring him and is just speaking his heart before he heads out.
What's amazing is that Trent wrote that for a totally different reason, for his drug addition at the start of his life, and Johnny sang the song to sing about the end of his life. Crazy how 2 men took the same song and make great music about 2 different points of their lives.

Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt" just devastated my soul. It has me over here thinking about my life, the people in it, and how I can do better by them.
I am new to your channel. Thank you for such an honest, thoughtful reaction. I had the same tears running down my face when I first watched this. I feel like Johnny was looking back at his life and lamenting his mistakes, as we all do. He realized that the things we collect and accomplish are nothing compared to the people we love. It's the people we miss, not the material possessions.
Johnny Cash was a Pisces too. Thinking back with regret with such depth is a thing that is brutal for Pisces.

He was a drug addict for many years and Struggled with depression and a lot of demons, he almost died back in the 60's because of this. When you know more about this mans life it just makes this song and video even sadder to be honest. His wife is in the video but she died shortly after this and then Johnny himself followed her a few months later. So this was kind of his goodbye.

I have watched a lot of reactions to this video. It is amazing how great art evokes something unique and powerful in each person. When I first watched this I cried. Johnny Cash was my Dad's favorite musician, and it reminded me of him and his passing. When he says "You are someone else. I am still right here" I break down. For me it is my dad saying that I dont have to follow in his footsteps, and that he exists inside of me when I need him. There are so many layers and meanings to this song, and everybody has a personal reaction to those meanings.
I dont know why, but this song also has an uplifting feeling at the end. A life is ending, but if there is a next life he will do better to not lose himself in the pursuit of material things and focus on what is truly important, which is the people in his life. That message is passed onto us the listener :)

I first heard this song when Nine Inch Nails released it. At the time, I was 20 and the song hit me because I felt my life was getting out of control.
A few months later, I heard Johnny's version, and it hit me harder, because it sounded more like his Opus Maxim as he said goodbye to all his fans.
I hear it again today, at 40, and I see Johnny's version for what it really is, a deep, painful lamentation of all the suffering he created for himself in his life, and it resonates with me harder now than ever, because I can feel the same things he must have felt when producing it.
Far and away, this is the most emotionally powerful song ever performed, and no one can do it like Johnny did. I truly hope that he's found his peace now, and I truly hope that he was able to reunite with June.

Something in Johnny's voice the first time he says "What have I become?" gets me every time. His voice conveys such sorrow and regret throughout the song.

A good musician will get their songs played on radio stations, sell millions of records, be super successful… a GREAT musician will touch the heart and souls of the people who listen regardless of the number of records or radio stations that play their songs. Johny Cash is one of the greats. He makes you think. He makes you laugh. He makes you hurt. One of the greats, and he will be missed. The world is a darker place without his talents but a brighter place than if he hadn’t been here.

I'd worry about anybody who does not get emotional listening to this song. It's just that powerful.
Listening to this song multiple times and letting it really sink in gets me every time to. But having a song draw strong emotions from you like that is also a good thing in a way.
The last gift from a legend, if this doesn’t touch you deeply something is wrong. Johnny knew he was getting to the end of his life and the statement in the song “ you can have my empire of dirt” really drives home a point. The closer we get to the end of life, the more we realize that material things aren’t what’s important. It’s the family and friends along the way and at that point in life you start realizing the “ hurt” that you’ve caused the one’s you love the most. All we can hope for is the sooner we realize that it’s our relationship’s that are the true fulfillment of life and not things, the longer we have to rectify them and make a much better impact on others......those crown’s of thorns we all are going to have to wear.👊🏾👊👊🏾👊👊🏾👊

Thank you for being open-hearted in this, I cried the first time I saw it and do EVERY time i watch it again. it is because we are witnessing Cash be as real, flawed, authentic as a person can be through his voice, his face...it also makes that feeling come alive in us, which can catch us off-guard in a world where people pretend a lot and keep things at the surface. It doesn't matter whether he was good or bad, he is baring his heart to the world when he sings this. A good cry can be therapeutic too :)

You know I went through White, Black, Asian, Middle Eastern people reacting to this video. The message is quite universal. Each of the cultures have slightly different interpretation of loss, regret or self reflection of past. Cash really did make his song his own. Indian, Arabic, African American, European American or native European. This is one of the songs that everybody can understand if they just listen. And that's why it's a masterpiece.
Quizzy that was a beautiful reaction to a hauntingly beautiful cover of Hurt. Hearing this song is secondary to feeling it. Johnny's pain was so raw...his regrets so very sad. He loved his wife June Carter Cash from the depths of his soul...but...even for her he could not stop the drugs. The self abuse of punishing himself over and over again. Yet she loved him despite it all. He truly was his own worst enemy and was his harshest critic. June standing behind him on the stairs is so poetic. She was always "behind" him, she had his back. She died in 2003 and just four short months later he followed her. Because you actually felt this song I was wondering if you could please react to Disturbed's cover of Simon and Garfunkel's "Sound of Silence"? Deeply moving. The band Nine Inch Nails performed the song, but not this song…you see, the original was from the perspective of a young man looking forward, whereas Johnny sang this from the perspective of one at the end of his life. Originally written about a young man who's life was falling apart, Jonny's interpretation is about an old man who's life is coming to an end.
I'm now 60, I've had 1 heart attack so far so this song is very much (to me) about my life and how I have hurt others. I can't change what I've done along the way to become who I am, but I can feel that pain.
I have lost many friends over the years (everyone goes away) and I have lost (died) many that I loved dearly.
At the end of the day I am who I am.
