  • In the USA, teenagers with behavioral problems often end up in re-education centers. These function like prisons, isolating the young people from the outside world. The harsh educational measures sometimes end in death.
This documentary sheds light on the extreme methods used in re-education facilities in the USA. These include isolation, torture and humiliation, as well as something called "assault therapy". These practices, which have little or nothing to do with traditional psychological treatments, aim to "reform" individuals through discipline and suffering. The adolescents sent there by their parents are between 8 and 18 years old. These parents report being overwhelmed by their adolescent children, citing problems from learning difficulties to substance abuse, social media addiction, anxiety disorders, depression or a sexual orientation they find unacceptable.
These private facilities do a lucrative business. In the hope that their children will get better, families spend thousands of dollars every month. Some even mortgage their homes to pay for their children to be part of these programs. Their children, on the other hand, can suffer lifelong damage there. There have also been cases of suicide. The film features young adults who have managed to escape the prison school system and parents who realized too late how cruel this system is.

I am a type 1 diabetic and testified against my sister. Texas placed me into the system and used me for pharma R&D on pediatric clinical trials. I was raped, choked, starved, drugged, and my diabetes was never properly regulated. I spent 3 years as a prisoner and punished if I spoke out. CASA and caseworkers rarely would talk to me, if they did, I was threatened and punished. I suggest you watch sucker punch, it's only the tip of the iceberg.

It's a country with a prison industry, so a "troubled teen industry" is just a long-term supplier. Because mental health care and support for struggling parents is too much for the "land of the free"...

Every annual visit, you fill out a 10 question survey asking if you're sad, enjoy things, etc. If you answer 2 surveys with just 1 question not optimal, that's enough in Texas to prove you're potentially a harm to yourself or others in a court of law. Every CHIPS or Medicaid pediatric patient is required to answer survey. The program systematically reviews these surveys and are referred to CPS in that county. The family is targeted until kids turn 19.

I went to a residential school for a year when I was 11-12 yrs. It was in southern missouri. I'm so grateful that they understood the importance of going outside. We were in the middle of nowhere so in case someone did run they would always catch them. But especially in the summer we were required to spend a couple hours outside everyday. It didn't make everything perfect but it improved things a lot. I'm so grateful for the staff that was there, a lot of them actually wanted to do good.
I will say the child psych ward I was sent to for 3 weeks before I was placed in the residential school was terrible. I so wish I could remember the name of the facility. I know it's in St Louis. There was a nurse specifically who would verbally abused me. I didn't eat a lot and she deemed me as bulimic and would make it a huge deal whenever I had to go to the bathroom. Scream down the unit, we got a singer. Children are the future and shouldn't be broken down by broken adults.

They do the same with DUIs. Few attorneys will fight the false charges due to their nature and it's become a huge business as the courts force people to buy substance tests, rehab classes, interlocks, etcetera.

Not just DUI. Anything in this country that people find a way to exploit. Same with the rehab center, patients are forced into labor camp. They work long hours with no break and no pay,& no safety work conditions in the chicken factory.
Same with teens with troubles and they got sent to shelter waiting for foster parents. While they are there, they experience horrific treatment, yet the program continues to receive funding from federal.

It's the Court Systems that err. DW addresses parents that volunteer their kids, but the majority, I'd say 80-90%, happen because it is demanded by Court System under threatening jail time to both kids and parents. County courts are rarely scrutinized, and the experts get kickbacks to testify on what is needed. I've been on both sides, as a ward of the state and hiring attorney to clear false accusations. Every family is targeted, regardless of income or location.

This is the byproduct of parents not wanting to raise their children. They would rather foist them off on the school system or unregulated businesses like the ones featured in this documentary. School is for learning academics not a nanny whom you hired to raise your kids. Pay attention to them and spend time with them so all their needs for attention and love are met.

This starts with the ego of the parents. They have these egocentric mindset that, they are better then everyone, because they accomplished so much in life and their kid must be saint and successful, just like them. As a teen, i was also a mess, i was dead drunk 2 or 3 times per week and smoked and i was hustle to deal with, but around 21 22 years old, i started to figure out what i want in life and i quited drinking and smoking, found a job and started to put effort towards accomplishing my goals. I got on tracks without this 'troubled kid' school prison and i think this institution is useless. It's normal to sometimes fall low in life, but everyone should have the freedom to decide for himself, if to stay in the bottom or clime out of the pit, but no one should be forced to be the best version of himself.

Paris Hilton would be dead if she wasn't locked up once. Of course the deaths of these people are regrettable and reforms must be made, but this is not Disney's world. I know from experience that people who have consumed drugs will not be rehabilitated with kisses and hugs and if they are not rehabilitated they will die and in many cases their children and close relatives will die first. I think it's great that they try new approaches with less violence, but without discipline I fear they will fail. And by the way, the Frenchman talked a lot and didn't say anything about the solution he proposes. Nothing good comes from Europe, remember that these guys are not even capable of defending themselves and they create beings that they don't know what they are and that they expect others to solve their problems.

This is a result of decades of soft parenting, never saying "No" to their kids, saying they're special and can do whatever they want, never disciplining them for bad behavior, and in some cases when the parents (usually immigrants from Asia) discipline their kids, it's called 'child abuse' and the parents are arrested..

@@matteo7092 @ 18 teen I had similar n worse training in military school, hurts when doing it but later you will see the fruits. We should have measures and policies to make sure the program runs in safe mode. If we neglect them we will loose them

I agree that those kids who don’t have love and support from home usually end up with problems in their teens. Some parents are patient and are able to be there for their children while some parents might need a helping hand from schools like these. The documentary is showing the bad side which creates a buzz. There are also countless individuals who have said that these schools created life long friendships, gave them discipline and give their life structure and good life lessons. Students dying is tragic and needs to be eliminated but that is not the entire picture. I too went to a boarding school that was rough and I had teachers we feared and also respected. Some kids need somebody like that in their life to help them find their way through life especially if love and invitation to choose good does not work I.e they are not consistently making the right and safe choices.

Absolutely. This was the only center to allow DW in, and DW treats them this way? Shameful. They were just looking to make a hit piece from the get-go.
