What a fantastic final high D-flat! And she held it for what felt like an eternity! Many of today's sopranos would have a hard time producing such resonance and power on that note.

Happily, I saw Dame Joan in her prime. I have to ask myself why she would’ve agreed to these bel canto roles at that point. She addressed it in a few interviews at the time: “I’d be just as happy to dispense with all the agility and sing roles like Adriana, but they still ask for things like Lucia!”
