I saw her many times in New York and other great stages, but never as Norma. I just watched an interview yesterday where she stated firmly that Norma and Traviata were her favorite roles.

It makes me feel good that I had the same or very similar observations about the singers before they critiqued them. I am so thankful for my distinguished pedagogue Julie Freeman who taught me Bel Canto technique. I have gone in the direction of Broadway and Gospel music with it, but incorporating fine opera technique makes untold differences in vocal stamina, quality, health, and most of all, a whole new range of options to choose from when singing. I am a Verdi baritone, however with time and practice, over the years I have stretched my vocal mix up to producing tenor C5s all the way up to a G5. I own it to Bel Canto technique and all those who invested in me.

I went to three of the five Lucias she sang in Vancouver in 1967. A the time I owned her first recording and a vocal score (which she autographed) so I can say with some authority there was not a single 16th note out of place! And the size of her voice soaring above the rest of the cast, chorus and orchestra! Indeed stupendous!

I had last seen her in 1986 (Puritani) and 1987 (Trovatore), and her voice, although a little more effortful, was still splendid. Never to be forgotten experiences.

I heard Joan live singing Marie in La Fille du Regiment, the first comic role I had ever seen her in. I was blown away by how good her acting was and then it hit me, she's actually a natural comedian!

That's 49-year-old Joan Sutherland singing SICK for you. Believe it or not, she was not in her best days regarding her health and vocal form, and yet she nails it and caps it with a Nilsson-esque High D-flat (but with virtuosic fioritura added). Man, the woman was definitley otherworldly.

Modern sopranos should be forced to listen to this. This is us a proper bel canto technique wuth proper breathing that supports the voice

Thank you! This was wonderful. Splicing the conception, rehearsal and then the final performance closely together, shows the mind set of the artists. They often see in their minds the end results as they begin their work. Then they work to bring it forth. Such a performance is a lot of work by many people, and yet it's a miracle too...enough to take your breathe away.
