I was in the audience at one of these performances. I saw it twice that season. I loved every moment. Looking back it's amazing how you can take things for granted. To be honest I never cared for her recitals. I found most of them boring, but I loved the sound of her voice.
There is nothing comparable these days. I am still astonished but the absolute security in the vocal line, the seamless transitions and legato, to fearless excursions into the high register...and those perfect top notes. The dramatic high Db at 34:50 was followed by a perfectly executed collapse to the stage, as only Sutherland could do. And there was that liquid trill. Was that voice real? Did it really happen? Even now, it's stupefying.
I had no idea this was supposed to be the premiere broadcast for _Great Performances at the Met_ before the Pavarotti/Scotto _Bohème_ with the improved lighting! A fascinating document of Domingo and Sutherland onstage together 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Here Ladies and Gentlemen we have an incomparable world-class live performance from Joan and Placido who are at the top of their game. Thank you 'Alexbaires' for the unique uploads of this performance that you have generously shared with us. I lament the fact that the 'powers that be' didn't like the lighting. If it came to a toss-up of would you rather have slightly poor lighting AND Joan or nothing I know which corner every Sutherland fan and I would be standing in.
This was one of the first opera performances I ever saw. It was before the days of subtitles, so I wasn’t sure what was going on. Most important, there were big bulky cameras on each side of the stage, and rumor is that the Met and Bonynge have a pristine copy. I don’t know why it’s never been released, perhaps union issues.
Surely, with all the upscaling and AI technology available today, this performance could be restored to something very credible at a technical level because it's obviously incredible at an operatic level.
Maybe some of declamation but only for aesthetic purposes, few care what they were saying as long as it sounded pretty. And the taste of many of those 78 t, with the never ending long notes and ordinary musicality. It a shame that you are unable to hear one of the most incredible singers of the XX century and only underlined her pronunciation.

I'm just glad this exists, poor lighting and all.

That trill! Perfection!

Beautifully sung by Joan and the rest of the cast. This opera perfectly suited her

To think I'd come across such a gem on Saturday morning. Thank you for posting.
35:30 Young James Morris, in his pre-Wagner days.
21:00 omg Joan!!!
Que maravilha. Deveriam lançar a ópera inteira em DVD.
The voice of Antonia's mother is Cynthia Munzer.
