The final movement is one of the most amazing pieces of all of western music.

bit longish yet divine
I too consider it the most profound movement I know. (the slow movement of the 4th comes close)
@@55archdukeGlad to see some love for the slow movement of the fourth. So many people adore the Adagietto of the fifth, and indeed so do I, but the fourth has a profundity and melancholy that I find more enthralling than the Adagietto.
MAHLER AND BERNSTEIN A TRUE GIFT FOR ALL HUMANITY FROM GOD.

Bernstein was buried with this Mahler 3rd Symphony score on his chest - he requested this !!! He loved it so !!!
Actually, Bernstein was buried with a copy of Mahler’s 5th Symphony. 😎🎹
Actually it was the 5th
I wish it had been the 3rd or the Resurrection, but it was the 5th!
With the score opened to the Adagietto
Probably Mahler's most melodious symphony; he himself considers it his best work.
considered ... (I agree it was, and going further ... one of the top five best of all time, if not #1).
Yes very melodious but Mahler’s 2nd si THE BEST: powerful and expressive, unbeatable.
This synphony is one of the greatest masterpieces in musical history.Lenny worked his whole life in working, hearing and interpreting the correct Mahler. And he was the best Mahler conductor.
Vast, titanic, momentous !!
Lenny very teatral. I think all is about taste. I like much more Abbado. Great professional. Karajan, just genius. But Paavo Järvi with Luzerna festival orchestra is brilliant. Just music not show like Lenny.
Bravo! @@baibaandersson9454
@@baibaandersson9454I think it is difficult for some people to understand (mind) more then this to FEEL(heart) him and his work.....to judge him and his work is in my opinion very superficial
@@baibaandersson9454close your eyes and listen if you don’t like his podium manner; the proof is in the hearing and Lenny et al just sound better than anyone else here. And if you don’t like drama, why are you listening to Mahler at all?
My favorite composition of any genre of all time

This is absolute interpretation of Mahler 3. Also, WP played this under absolutely profound interpretation of Bernstein!!! Still, WP keep some of sprit of Mahler!!! What a great history!!!
Für mich auch 🎹
I believe Bernstein knew Maher’s work better than most. He wanted to be Mahler. He wasn’t going to hold back anything in the orchestra. Not with Mahler “watching.” I imagine Bernstein understood he and the orchestra needed the composer’s blessing, for Bernstein’s sake.
Et aussi pour la I° et la IV° .
What a symphony…
This Music is as old to them as Beatles Music is to us now 2023-05-08
This clip moves me to tears even when played back on my laptop's speakers. The clip also shows LB's enormous appetite for music and life. He's not merely conducting music. He's performing it.
Apart from Bernstein being both spectacular and sensitive - and my favorite Mahler interpreter - consider the remarkable quality of sound, images and editing in this recording performed with the technology of 50 years ago. Truly remarkable in all respects!
1:50 1:50 1:50
These were produced by Bernstein's own company Amberson, and they did not do it on the cheap!
"the technology of 50 years ago..." 50 years ago was not that backward. The moon landing had been done, human hearts transplanted, the micro chip was just a few years away and you could call your distant cousin in Australia by phone, if you wished. Even though the carrier devices have changed, gain in recorded sound quality over the next 50 years has been minimal (I accept that tastes differ)...
Un Genio....!!!! EL FINAL ES DIVINO, SOBRE HUMANO, MARAVILLOSO, INDESCRIPTIBLE!!!
Bernstein at his very best! The video and sound are simply astounding for the time!
Some of the best recordings of all time came from that period: 1965 Karajan's recording of Berlioz "Symphonie Fantastique" ... Klemperer/Barenboim recording of Beethoven's Five Piano Concertos--with the John Aldis Choir in the 5th--Choral Fantasia. Sublime and unmatched by anything since.
Glorious! Mahler's (and Lenny's) greatness is overwhelming
Wonderful !! Bernstein the Best Conductor !!
Simplemente UNA MARAVILLA !

Pls never take this down :-)
Two audio and one video. All 3 are without question the finest Mahler recordings. A masterclass.
Symphony , tree , Mahler , is very very beautiful ❤
I think only Bernstein could pull that ending off that slow...incredible!
Thats the way I believe it should be performed, like Abbaddo did...the slowness brings out the grandeur and even though it is one of Mahlers "quietest" climaxes. it ranks up there with the Resurrection and 8th, as the 3 best.
Just two words ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL
Bernstein and Mahler what a combination.
I will always be a Mahlerian!
GLORIA ❤
Amazing man, iconic ❤
I mean, the last movement is simply sublime and we all know that, but the first one is really a unique experience. The severe part in contraposition to the "summer march" give an incredible landscape of emotion, sonically and philosophically. Life and death, apollonian and dionysian...this symphony really is an incredible journey
A masterpiece of sheer genius
many thanks while I had the good fortune to watch the maestro conduct Mahler's 1st, 5th and 6th live in NY in the mid 1980s I am sorry I did not have the chance to watch him in this.
❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏 BRAVISSIMO!!!!!
Magnificent
He sure knows how to end a symphony!
Thank you for making this masterpiece available once again.
This is an amazing performance. The music starts about 1:15 into the video if you want to skip the names and applause. Cheers.
OMG! It is so long since I had e listened to Mahler 3, but this brings me back to it with entirely new understanding.
Oui. Merveilleuse, luxueuse représentation. Totale maestria.
Merci.
Mahler 3 tells such a dramatic and compelling story. Bernstein's interpretation is great
It's very, very good

MARAVILHOSO!
Haitink and Bernstein RIP - your Mahler recordings are always on my youtube - WONDERFUL
Mahler could not do anything small. This is as big as music can sound.
Even soft he can be huge.
It is beyond this mundane world
Hurray, what a nice music !
At 1: 44: 25 Lenny winces when the 2 timpanists are not exactly together
He even taps his foot in time!
Congratulations
mahler reasearch log #3: CLASSICAL OL BERNSTEIN! the genius at hand, the jack (or conductor) of all trades, bravo! what i like to think about while listening to this symphony isna tree growing, it starts with the inanimatr unsuspecting seeds, and with only something God can make possible through nothing else but his own complex creation, it grows into the final product, a tree! something great, as seen in the finale. what i noticed were connections to mahler 2 and mahler 5, with the triplets, chord structure, and chords held, especially the final chord that the orchestra played. i find this symphony very woodwind and string heavy, naturally, as this is a tribute to nature. what i can conclude from this is that this simply is God's creation of nature, and in the final 2 movements, it symbolizes the creator of the universe, the King of kings! i feel that i am on track, and that the questions of the 6th symphony are to regard life and death, and subjects related to the universe... maybe God has already answered them for mahler. signing off
For those of us who are older, this a great testament to Bernstein's charismatic conducting. True, the playing is not perfect and details brought out by other conductors, such as the snarling muted trumpet near the end of the last movement, are not brought out. But the VPO was relatively new to Mahler at the time. Very moving!
Pachelbel's canon at ~19:40 in flutes+piccolo
If one were to say the history of mankind is the history of war, few would disagree....
He does the best Bradley Cooper imitation, ever.
🤣
One should never shout or applaud until the conductor lowers his arms.
Thanks for mentioning it, I totally agree, it kills the atmosphere
I would see it as an honor. The music was so compelling that one couldn't wait to exclaim with joy...and this piece deserves it!
So true! Zubin Mehta conducting Mahler's 3rd is a poignant example: He, conducting the music all from his head and soul, looks absolutely drenched and takes his time recovering from what he has just gifted to the audience.
@@smoosikcompozer5935 while there is some merit to immediately applauding for the amazing performance, and in a way I agree with you, from a musical standpoint, and out of respect to the conductor, you should still never applaud until the piece is truly over. The last note takes time ringing throughout the hall, and, especially with for a piece with an ending as Mahler’s Third, it should be allowed to fade away naturally. Additionally, it is a part of the composer’s interpretation. Imagine people immediately applauded after the last note of a performance of Tchaikovsky’s Sixth! Just a quick disclaimer, by no means should you take my word as fact though, I am not an expert on this topic, merely sharing from my musical experience.
@@potatodecimator131 Haha no your point is definitely valid, and I think Tckaik did an excellent job of setting that mood. I think Mahler's ending was deserves either. Tchaik 6 is one of my favorites btw! I write with Mahler and Tchaik in mind most times...
At around 4:20 Bernstein does a "quack" sound. I was so surprised by that I had to scroll back and relisten to the part as I thought I may have heard a real duck through my noise cancelling headphones. Somehow it was awesome to catch this. Not sure why.
No I heard the quak while walking from the conservatoire I learn at
The best part is the music! The next best part is Bernstein dodging the second handshake after walking on stage
It is always fascinating to listen to pieces and then noticing the inspiration for another, as this one was probably an inspiration for John Williams while composing the music for The force awakens. Maybe it´s BS but I like the idea.
♥️♥️👏
O Mensch! Gib Acht!
Was spricht die tiefe Mitternacht?
"Ich schlief, ich schlief -,
aus tiefem Traum bin ich erwacht: -
Die Welt ist tief,
und tiefer als der Tag gedacht.
Tief ist ihr Weh -,
Lust - tiefer noch als Herzeleid.
Weh spricht: Vergeh!
Doch all' Lust will Ewigkeit -,
- will tiefe, tiefe Ewigkeit!"
da sprach der Herr Jesus: "Was stehst du denn hier?
What is it about the Bernstein interpretations of Mahler that make them so unique?
the horn part starting at 15:26 is insanity
I'm looking to find the name of the trombone soloist. I've had no luck so far.
1:38:08 to 1:38:16 sounds remarkably similar to the track that plays when Spock dies in Wrath of Khan.
Lenny, believe me, the second violinist is a really nice guy.

Who is playing the postern solo?
This is a good performance, but I find Bernstein's 1961 recording of Mahler 3 with the New York Philharmonic notably better.
Agreeed. I find the tempo of the 6th movement here a bit too slow.
I would give Haitink and Bernstein a draw for the last langsam - as they both do it well - this one is likely B's best - you can feel it

Overall a great recording but it seems like the brass had trouble throughout the first movement, primarily with their entrances.
The sound of the trombone entrance right after the bass drum roll at the beginning is perfect. I always hear it so neat, clean, and short these days. I love a muddy sound there. They even sound a little out of tune, but it really adds to the misery of the mountains. The time of the mountains is over; the lava cools and life begins
