I’m glad you’re doing well on the meds. I was diagnosed in November 2023 with inattentive type ADHD at the age of 47, then autism is December. Waiting to start tying the ADHD meds.

Your point about not being able to do anything in moderation rings so true to me. I also struggle with binge drinking sometimes, and the shame that follows. Before being diagnosed with ADHD I also “self medicated” with weed and caffeine to a point of excess. I’ve heard this is a common thing among people with ADHD though, so know you’re not alone!
Also it’s wonderful to see your moment of gratitude, and to see that you’re generally so much happier now than before! :)

For me it's food/drink and impulsive spending, and the HUGE WAVES of shame afterwards. Thank you for sharing your experience in your comment; it's reassuring to know I'm not 'weird' or just a terrible person when I feel that way :)
Thank you so much for your ongoing support of my channel - you are a star! I hope you have a good week, Em x

6:35 - I think what your describing here is the need for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). This therapy will help identify healthy and unhealthy habits, and then help you establish new habits and thoughts in line with the person you want to become. It's intense and very much worth trying since you have so much guilt for things you may not yet have the tools to improve. (BTW - It's more than talk therapy). Positive thoughts your way, E!

      Hey there again! :)
Yes, I definitely think I need some therapy on this. Once I get some of my other financial priorities look at shame and how I respond to unhealthy behaviours/lapses in moderation is a big one for me when speaking to an expert. I really need to do some CBT too - is there any online tools you might be able to recommend?
Thanks for your support as always! Em x

Im still rather new to ADHD, but I understand that binge drinking is pretty common for many of the reasons you listed - plus its apparently another thing that increases dopamine.
Ive been looking at a lot of my activities like that as "dopamine chasing" (a term I heard in another video and it made a lot of sense to me). We seem to become fixated on anything that improves those levels in any way. I had been a binge drinker for a long time - clubs, parties, friends places etc, but had cut back and started avoiding it more for a long time. But, I have been letting myself have about 3 ciders a night and a little port sometimes, and it really does help, even in moderation (wierd!! :P ). Ive been leaning on any crutch I can since diagnosis a month ago, as Im waiting on my doc to get authority to prescribe the medication to me. Caffeine has been my other big go to, to try and get by until then.
Dont be too hard on yourself - once I started realising why I was doing these things, I was able to forgive myself a little more and be a little less tough and strict about it all. You are only human after all, and at a fairly significant disadvantage to most neurotypical people 🙂

      Hi Bry0n1c!
I'm really glad to hear that you have managed to cut down on your binging, I think the most important set is acknowledging where a behaviour is doing you harm, so you're on the right track, well done :)
Thanks for the support! I'll try to be kind to myself...!

I've also had problems binge drinking and this past weekend was the first time in as far as I can remember that I hadn't felt terrible for at least part of the weekend. Concerta is really helping edge those cravings, but they're not completely gone. Bad habits and all that. I have a feeling that some people with ADHD need to cut alcohol completely out of their lives, the shame can be unbearable.
Have you thought about trying other types of stimulant medication? I can feel my Concerta ween off by the end of a long day at work. I'm worried by this Friday my meds will wear off after work and I'll drink more than I want to. I am interested to know if there is stimulant medication I can take before going out for a late night with friends so I can have less urge to drink more. It's all new to me! Something I'll bring up with my doctor.
    Thanks for sharing!

Aaa that's so awesome to hear Paul - well done! It's always nice to have a fresh head on a weekend, there is so much that can be achieved! And the best bit? You can do whatever you want with that time :)
I'm not a big drinker in the sense that most weekends I don't drink heavily (maybe a glass of wine with dinner once or twice a week), but if I slip up...I really slip up.
I haven't tried any other of the stimulant medications, but it's interesting to think about when the meds wear off and how that might be before an evening drinking alcohol. I'll keep that in mind!
Thanks for the comment - I really appreciate your support of my channel.
I hope you have a great week, Em x
