Thank you for this. I used to write quite frequently for various online pages getting ad revenue (Hubpages, anyone?). I haven't in over 12 years but I STILL get passive income every few months from the handful of articles I have put out there. Recently, I've been feeling a bit bitter about my day job which is more technical in nature and no longer relies on my writing -- but I miss writing. Perhaps it's time to put my had back in the ring. Hi Hudson - thank you for this great primer on Medium - it's exactly what I needed to jump back into it. I was one of the annoyed ones from the changes (and the mess of AI articles), and gave up on it, but going to give it another go. Ths answered a lot of questions about getting distributed (curated/boosted), whether to submit to publications still (YES!), and what to write on. It's more fun than delivering Uber Eats- so making it my next side hustle!

I have been on it since 2015, but I stopped writing in a few years. Now, I am ready to go forward. My question is, how do I make my profile? Mine is blank. If you have any tips on how to do that, I would love to read it. You do a great job helping people. I respect that. Thank you.
Good for you for coming back! As for your profile, I would:
1. Add a picture (it doesn't have to be your face if you don't want)
2. Keep your bio simple: you can write "I'm [your name]. I write about [your interests]"
As for customizing your profile (banner, font, etc.), I wouldn't bother unless you really want to. The most important things are to have a picture and your bio filled out. I hope that helps! 🙂🙌

Are you saying then that Medium has become a bit more social media-like in its approach? You have to court attention in order to stay seen (and stay paid)? Not necessarily a bad thing, I just need to learn the rules of the game!

I also was immediately approved to partner program. I then made a Stripe account (in Canada). What I'm wondering is, I had 3 articles published before I did the partner program 2 nights ago. Can those articles begin to earn now that I have a stripe dashboard? I'm slowly gaining views and reads on my 3 articles but the money earned still shows --. Not sure if it takes time for money to start showing up? Thanks.!
@@mikecorazza4294 So, the articles will start earning from any new views you get after joining the Partner Program. As soon as your stories accrue new reads, your earnings should show up within 24 hours. 🙂🙌

I noticed that little pop up after publishing on how this article will be included in the partner program. What I'm worried about, are the first few articles I wrote, especially the very first one which was a story about me surviving a cardiac arrest at 41, and seeing an interview with Colbert and Cooper about learning to love the things we wish most not happened. I really feel like I composed a great piece of work, and it's from my heart, not AI generated, I think the formatting looks decent. So I'm hoping I checked the boxes of what the Medium curators would eventually consider a boostable story. ** But can these 3 articles published before I was approved for partner program now be eligible to earn money? I figured out how to go back, edit the article, and then click the 3 little dots at the top right, you can "manage paywall" and now have older articles as part of partner program. I just hope that these articles that have only been out a week or so, won't be hurt by me being part of the partner program. I really want to learn and understand how to put my articles into publications and will watch more of your content on that. I'm assuming this will help push my articles out there in a more targeted way! Thanks again

Manage to break even $150 of friend of medium fee. But the daily profit don’t seem to grow much. $4 to $5 while others make like $30 to $40. And mostly on making making niche and medium related earning got the most readers. Base on my opinion

Yes, I totally agree. I've also pulled back the amount of effort I put into Medium. I still like and recommend it to new writers. But, it definitely has changed. 🥲

The pay is the main thing -- but, more specifically, how pay is calculated. In the past, earnings metrics were more straightforward, making it easier to bank on consistent earnings. But, now, the success of articles is based on more subjective metrics. @@Phil-dt3od

Can you publish to more than one place, like the same article to more than just illumination? And when promoting my articles outside of medium how would that article be linked? The whole article itself, just the link, or special citation format?
I don't think there's a specific rule about it, but publications generally won't publish something that's already been published on Medium. As for how to cite your articles, you can just add a link to the article. If you hit the little "..." at the top of your article, there will be a "share" button. You can copy + paste that to wherever you'd like to promote it. 🙂🙌

Yes! You can write about whatever you'd like. And, it's totally up to you. Personally, I write about multiple topics and keep it all on one profile. Splitting it up can be smart, but you'll also have to have multiple membership fees. 🙂💭

You don't need publications, but personally, I do find them helpful. Whenever I self-publish, I find I get less views. But, it's not necessary -- Medium will Boost self-published stories and many writers are successful without publications. 🙂🙌

Nope! You own all of your Medium content -- regardless of where it's published. 🙂✅

You can technically use on A.I., but they generally don't perform well. If you're going to use A.I., I would recommend only generating drafts and then adding a human element to your stories. 🙌

It's a great question. I don't have a definitive answer as I don't write fiction. But, generally speaking, it seems to be less lucrative than non-fiction articles. With that said, earnings are all about read time. So, if you write engaging stories people want to read, anything can become lucrative. 🙂🙌

I always think it's best to apply for the Partner Program as soon as you can. As for the stats, you'll still be able to see them as a non-member, but I don't think earnings will show up. 🙂🙌

You can try Newsbreak. Or, you can still write on Medium but promote affiliate links instead of earning from the Medium Partner Program. 🙂🙌

You definitely can. I often have $1,000+ months. I think the most important thing is to have a base of engaged readers who read all of your stories. It helps give them a boost in the algorithm. Once you have a library of profitable stories, earnings become more consistent. 🙂🙌
Important to mention: in order to get paid by Medium you need a STRIPE account. This is the only way. Sad but true. No paypal, no bank account, worst of all: no crypto (or does Stripe crypto, too?)
Yes, it's too bad. Just Stripe (I don't think Stripe does crypto either). 🥲The only other option for monetization on Medium is to promote affiliate links. 💰
Can I just start writing straight away without a membership and get a membership later once I have published 4-5 articles? Will I be able to monetize those articles?
Once you monetize your account, you can turn on the paywall on your past stories. But, you'll only start getting paid for new views you accrue -- not the views the stories gained in the past. 🙌

What's your take on how long the article is? Shorter? Longer?
Personally, I aim for 5-8 minutes of read time (around 1,000 - 2,000 words). This is on the longer side, but because I only post once per week, the longer read time contributes to higher earnings.

Most publications only accept unpublished drafts. So, generally, you have to choose whether you want to self-publish or submit to a publication. 🙂🙌

Hmm, that's a good question. You can search under the tag 'sports' to see where other writers are publishing. But, Illumination will publish articles on any topic. 🙂🙌
Hello. I'm a UA-cam scriptwriter, but I'm currently exploring other avenues to make money online. Recently, I started publishing articles on Medium, and I'm also a member. However, I've discovered that I can't earn or monetize my articles due to an issue with Stripe account. Unfortunately, my country (the Philippines) is not eligible for Stripe. Do you have any suggestions for me to make money with Medium? Are you incorporating affiliate links into your articles? If yes, and if it's okay with you, may I know how much you've earned by promoting affiliate links in your articles?
Ah, that's too bad. 🥲 In terms of earning on Medium without joining the Partner Program, affiliate links are your next best option. Personally, I don't use them very often on Medium, so I can't give you an accurate figure. But, I know many writers who earn anywhere from $10 - $200 per article promoting affiliate links -- generally AI tools.

You can only submit one story to one publication at a time. But, in general, I think it's smart to have multiple publications to submit to. If one publication decides not to publish your story, you can try another. It's also helpful if you write about multiple topics. 🙂🙌

They can be any length you'd like! But, to maximize earnings, I generally aim for 5-8 mins (1,000 - 2,000 words). 🙂🙌

If there would be a summary of the video.. What would the steps to have a successful long audience? I have a lot of gym friends I already see an opening. There's a chat in face book filled with friends from the gym.
I would say:
- Post at least once per week
- Leave comments on stories from everyone who engages with your stories
- Find 2-3 publications you vibe with and submit to them often
Other than that, it's just a process of trial, error, and learning what works best for you. 🙂🙌

They don't know about medium. They said that depending on what they will find out about that they will allow me to engage in it. However they still haven't made the decision they didn't said that they were not going to do it. They just said that they were going to search medium up first. I'm a step closer to being paid.

If you're wanting to earn from the Partner Program, I would wait. Just because it's hard to say how long it will take Medium to expand to Nigeria. In the meantime, I would recommend writing on Newsbreak. I know many Nigerian writers have been able to get monetized on it. And, in terms of the topics, there will be no difference in pay. Earnings are based on a combination of read ratio, read time, and user engagement. So, it's all about getting people to click, read, and engage with your stories -- regardless of the topic. @@vesogry
