2. Client-based writing platforms that pay beginners. These two are geared around clients, who post jobs, that are then accepted by you.

Quick update from the future (fev/2024): now Medium is now requesting you be a paying member to get paid... Which is so annoying like you need to buy scissors to open the scissors package.
What else would you suggest?

Hey, how much was your first month income? And also, what kind of stories do you write?
I've been a 4-star rated Textbroker author for 14 years. In the beginning, there was plenty of work and I was averaging about $600 a week. But, unless you're on an actrive team that has plenty of work available or you have direct order clients, you will not find any work. There have not been open orders (general pool of assignments availablke to anyone in that star level) for months now, and the teams have dwindled from more than a thousand to fewer than 100. If not for the direct order clients that I've worked with for years, I would starve. I do think platforms like ChatGPT have killed freelancing to some extent judging by the amount of work available since last year. I've had several clients disappear for a while and reappear who have admitted they were using AI platforms for their content.
lol i was 4 stars for like 10 years.. I had about 50 teams and only wrote for clients that never requested revisions and paid 3-4 cents. I would only write 1-3 articles a day and spend less than an hour doing them.. so I'd do maybe 15 articles a week and make 15-20$ per article. pretty decent. they demoted me to 3 stars for no reason lol which booted me off all of my teams and now there are virtually no articles to accept. I accepted one and it paid trash and then TB admins evaluated my work before the client accepted it and asked me for revisions twice lol f this site
@@dankbuds-md5li They recently busted me down to three stars also, and it came out of nowhere. According to forum posts, I'm not the only one. The few clients I do have for direct orders have reported sending me messages that I never received, and apparently, my outgoing messages are being monitored by TB because two clients included their email addresses. A client sent me a $50 bonus recently, and TB took $17 of it. I don't see how they're staying in business. The teams have dropped down to 71 since last week, and the active teams I'm still on haven't placed any orders in weeks. I have launched my own freelance site and working on a youtube channel in the health niche.

I'm going to try a couple of these sites. I don't really care about the money. I'm a writer and I've rarely shown any of my novels or short stories to anyone else and this might be good practice to get me over my anxiety about getting my work out there. I started a book series last year and finished 3 books and have anxiety about publishing. I also have some other novels and short story collections. I just recently started thinking about publishing.

The requirements on Medium has changed a little, you need to be a paying member, but you no longer need 100 followers. You have to apply and Medium has to approve you.
@@jiujitsuhealth Yeah I think they need more money to keep it going, or at least to keep it reasonable, since they have many writers joining. I do think it is reasonable to some degree, since they probably had high earners who didn't pay before. It sucks for the low earners though.
It is regret that Medium earnings only pay via Stripe but not Paypal or any other payment methods. :(

Started posting fiction on Medium again and the following is a slow but growing and it feels amazing. Not earning yet but I'm ok with growing naturally. I agree that selling creative work is harder. I've been experimenting with creative nonfiction and lyrical essays to weave my interests more outward. I would tell any creative writer like me that there's a way to bridge the gap! Just a little research and inspiration. Poets and writers magazine has a feature where you can look for the kind of magazine that match your writing style. I always get a ton of ideas from them.

@@Tchacopp Hi! it’s a very competitive platform- i was applying for dozens of gigs and even if I did hear back, sometimes nothing would come of it. Then I got work for someone who wanted me to write film summaries for a few months, so I did two, for a pitiful amount of money. Then after taking ages to pay me for the second one, the guy didn’t need me anymore . I could have kept at it on there but more and more false starts kept happening and the money wouldn’t have been great for even the things I was most interested in. People will compete by offering their services for the lowest amount of money- like fiverr.
I know whichever platform you use you have to really put a huge amount of effort in- but I don’t think Upwork was the platform for me 😊

Thanks for this summary. I am a 5-star writer for Textbroker UK as well as their lead blogger (for official TB Expert Centre blogs). Having been a professional content creator for almost 14 years, I can say that TB is one of the best online platforms available. However, Open Orders have dwindled to nearly nothing (thanks to ChatGPT). Authors will only really survive on Team Orders and Direct Orders (which all writers to set their own price per word). Having said this, the only real way to make money with TB involves VOLUME. Without getting into details, there were weeks when I pulled over €700 euros. The catch is that you pretty much have to write about anything that comes across; requiring a wide knowledge base. Unfortunately, work has dried up in recent months and even Direct Orders are hard to come by. Here's hoping for better times...

TB has been one of the best and I only hope that AI doesn't completely destroy the industry. On a side note, please let me know if you are aware of any decent platforms that accept overseas writers. I've been writing essay-worth UA-cam comments for YEARS, and I just got into reddit (what a mistake) a few months ago and have likewise been writing essay-worthy responses lol. I'm simultaneously job hunting right now, and I stumbled upon a job post for freelance writing. The company itself was not good, but it struck me as an idea like, "Wait...THIS IS A THING?!" So finding this as an option has been a huge exciting endeavor because writing comes so easily to me, and if I can get paid to do something I already do extensively and for fun, and also at my own pace, boy what a game changer. =)

So do you get to add your completed writing assignments to your portfolio or are they property of the ones you are writing for? It sounds like AI is not in favor, not even for editing?
It depends on the platform and I'd always recommend double-checking in the guidelines. But for the most part, on platforms like Medium, for example, you retain all the rights to your content and you can repost stuff you've previously published elsewhere.
