Very good instructions. I use a similar setup. I don't usually give advice, however, the only issue I saw is that I would attached the tether before leaving the ground. I learned this lesson the hard way. Last deer hunt in Georgia, I was climbing up to my first setup off the ground. Had muddy wet boots and slipped off the platform as I went to stand up. I was only 4-5 off the ground so no issue with the height. However, when I slipped I fell back to the ground and jabbed the end of the top platform into my ribs. Thankfully, I didn't break anything just really bad bruise to my lower left rib cage. It took almost 4-months before I didn't have any pain when turning or laying down. Now I don't leave the ground without being tethered. I coming from years of rock climbing and knew better, than to not be roped in, I was just in a hurry. Just wanted to share. Great job demonstrating.

Saddle hunting is the best. Every video makes it look more complicated than it really is. I managed to safely get up a tree to 15 feet on my first attempt after unboxing the rig and it took me minutes. Went out this morning at 5:16 and was in the tree chilling at 5:24. Pretty fun stuff and there is nothing like leaning out over the saddle platform taking shots. It feels awesome!!
People laugh at this and have so much negative things to say but to me it’s unbeatable if you are hiking in at a distance. I’ve carried the climbers for years and went from a 20 pound climber down to one sticking that sits around 5 pounds. Taking 15 pounds off of your back and being able to hunt any tree is huge to me but I get it from the outside looking in it’s expensive to get into and it comes with a learning curve. No going back for me personally.. Great video!
Love the video! 2 things I do differently are putting a giant gear tie on the stick for a higher handle makes it easier to grab. 2nd, wind your paracord up using the figure 8 method over your thumb and pinky!😊

I just started hunting again this season. Started halfway through. I’m more interested in saddle than a regular tree stand just for the versatility of it and ease of moving from tree to tree. I’m not good with ropes and all that so I’m gonna need some practice before next season
Great info.. probably the best one stickin’ I’ve watched yet.
Couple things. One, you need to get rid of the carabiner you're using on your tether. They are NOT designed to be side loaded and could be dangerous. You do side load that thing in this situation. A quick link can take side load and is superior for this application. The other thing I will say is that you need to move the tether up after after step up or close to it. A fall on 3-4ft of slack like you're doing can be fatal or at best hurt you badly. Me personally, I use my linemans as well on the climb and keep as much slack out of it as I can. This serves two purposes. One, it is easier getting up an aider with the help of the linemans rope and allows me to move my tether up as I go while having some stability added by the linemans. The second thing is the fall factor. If something goes sideways and I slip, the linemans is going to immediately put me into the tree/stick, then I may go down the tree till the tether catches me. This at least minimizes any type of free fall on a slack tether.
I use a biner too, it ain’t gonna break and I ain’t got time to be closing a delta link
@@bfriendly100 While I agree that it most likely won't break... why use the wrong device in that application? There's a reason climbers and arborist use quick links or notch's in this application. Have you ever taken notice to how much your carbiner flexes on your bridge when you put weight on it? And thats along its strong axis. I dunno, to each their own, but the five seconds it takes to spin my quick link shut hasn't cost me anything yet.
should Definitely invest in a Delta Link, should never load a carabiner on your tether going around the tree like that! hope others see this comment and learn also

@@mikemellon80 it’s called “side loading” most carabiner companies warn you no to do this on their warning labels. Carabiners are designed to hang up and down so any weight or stress is on the top and bottom of it. When you run a rope around a tree and through the carabiner (like in this video) you are turning the carabiner sideways and the stress is being pushed onto its side against the tree (hence the name “side loading”)

I have a set of rapid rails and a millinum hang on stand. They pack together with no sound together they weigh 21 pounds. I put a gameplan back packing system on them.even in my mid 50s I can pack them for a couple miles. I can reach 25ft and hang the stand within 5 minutes. You can sit all day and even kick back and take a nap. And don't have to wear knee pads. I haven't seen anything great about saddle hunting
My only concern is what happens if you accidentally drop your platform?? Youre all the way up without anything to put your feet on.

Not a bad climb sir! I’d encourage you to try and be in the habit of moving your tether up with you with every step you take. It’ll help minimize the slack in your line just in case of worst case scenario. Good luck this season! 👊🏽

@@StealthTRD make sure you have your toe “dug” into the tree good with every move. It helps the core stabilize you while you advance your tether

@@StealthTRD haha definitely have done that before my man! Lol that’s one reason why I climb with a spare tether instead of linemans belt. That way I’m actually tied to the tree my entire climb. I have had a onestick fail and a hang on fail both at 20ish feet. One I walked away from because I was tethered in, the other I hobbled into the ER lol climb safely sir! Take your time.

I don't find the saddle that comfortable ..i feel tense the whole time, my knees hurt if i sit an my legs get weak if i stand .ive only hunted 2 times out of it so im gonna give it a season cause certain public land i hunt has tress that are not great for a climber. Plus i love the lightweight. I just feel so backwards in it
You should tie the climbing stick to you in case you drop it 15 ft up so you can save yourself.

Carabiners are not designed to be side loaded. Please consider switching to a tri link or d link to attach your repel rope.

I have a Cesso Tree Lounge climber, but im looking for something that wont damage bark on trees so i can hunt WMAs. No damage to trees is one of the rules and the climber digs into the bark.
I think you have the best video I have seen so far. It's an easier video for me to understand. I'm not 100% sold on it but I would like to try it in the off season and practice. If you said it I missed it but, where did you order your stick?

I use a LW assault with an aider and 3 sticks I can get up a tree in 4-5 minutes 18 feet up in any tree like the saddle but the LW seems so much quieter than this saddle presentation. One clank of that buckle where I hunt and the deer are gone, he did it several times. But 2 miles with the assault hiking in is getting old, I’m torn between this or a LWCG set up, this saddle one step method seems super loud to me

For the life of me, I can't understand how any of this mess is easier than a Summit Viper Elite SD. I just don't get it.
I'm really torn on the safety of this method overall, I use the summit viper now and really like it. The only downside is the weight, hiking all over public land with that thing on my back is a bear, and I want something lighter. You could trade it for a saddle and 5 steps, or you can risk your life 1 sticking like this. not to mention it's another huge investment changing your entire tree climbing strategy.
Weight and if needed you can climb around limbs
Summit climber you need a perfect tree. Saddle hunting you can practically get in any tree.
It's alot better than climber quieter lighter don't knock it till you try it at least 3or 4 times

I came up with an easier, quieter, and safer way. If you're interested, I made a video simple titled (ONE STICKING). You are really good at it, but if that stick suddenly slips a bit resettles at the wrong moment. Well, this would just make it even better! Hope you like it.

I'd like to see how to perform weak side shots. Most commonly I see people stand on the platform and reach through the rope. It seems like with the angled one stick platform it would be difficult to pull that shot off.
look at the hunting public youtube video where they do one with tethrd. they go over all types of shooting situations
Watching this after doing lots of saddle hunting research and video watching. Sitting here wondering how to further lighten my pack by eliminating climbing sticks - looking for another public land option. Here it is! The comments are just bizarre though - I guess many of these commenters don't know what saddle hunting is for starters so this whole setup looks foreign and unsafe to them. Yeah some techniques could have been executed differently but overall this is basically a fail-proof system when it comes to safety.
I have been doing it for a few years and for now settled on the 2 tether climbing method. My buddies all one stick and make it sound like it would be less effort to get up but as he shows in his video when he climbs up his tether is way low and not going to do much good if something kicks out. People say you can move the linesman belt up as you go or maybe the tether but than it really kind of slows you down so I don't see any vids of people actually doing either.
I really don't understand what the purpose of 1 sticking is. Like is it more about because you want to do it, or is it actually faster and quieter than carrying 2 othe sticks with a few aiders?

Great question! There’s more than enough pressure about descending that it won’t affect that at all. You’re good to go!

What if your tree had limbs on it that you had to climb around? How are you going to be able to yank your repel rope down??
When you pull your ‘bow rope’ that is attached to your tether it comes right over the limbs. Only one time in 4 years have I ever had to go back up to retrieve my rope and it was because it wedged in a deep V and wouldn’t come loose.

I was using a roll up pouch very similar to the one Tethrd sells on their site now. Now I have the Tethrd Lockdown saddle with the massive bags on the side, could hold 60’ if needed. They’re awesome!

No. This was just for demonstration purposes. Can go as quiet and slow as you please

We hunt 90 percent public land where those are illegal. But they are an efficient way of getting in the tree no doubt!
This is really unsafe. You don't flip a lineman belt up with you, and continually climb above your tether.
I don't understand? His tether is constantly above him and he is never untethered from the tree? What aspects are unsafe?
@@Med0n3 as soon as he leaves the ground...He has a step with an aider that he climbs to the top of before he's attached at all. why would you not put a lineman on at the base? that's what it's for.
Nice demonstration, my friends think it's too much work to one stick, but compared to using a climber it's the most chill and relax climb ever. Never sweating, always safe, it only looks hard. It's hard to go back to multi-sticking after one sticking imo, I just can't see the point. I use a separate stick and platform and 2 moves after the initial ground move is just over 19 feet for me with a 3 step aider, but like you said I never use the third step except off the ground. Question though, are you using a carabiner on your tether? I was always told to use a quick link due to cross loading concerns. I get tired of screwing and unscrewing it though, how safe is it to use an auto locking carabiner?
Yes sir that was my setup last year and have since switched to a quick link! I feel like it’s much safer now and I was a little newer to the game using the carabiner previously. We appreciate you watching!
brother I've been multisticking for 2 years and now that it's the cold weather season, carrying my gear into public land with enough sticks to reach 18-20 feet is heavy, difficult and uncomfortable because there is no way to not break a sweat. Additionally, managing the sticks, packing them up, strapping them all to my bag, fitting my platform in the bag... with grunt calls, water, maybe food, and extra layer for the cold - it's just too much stuff. I was already considering single sticking and after dealing with all my cold weather gear PLUS my heavy sticks, I'm ready to bite the bullet and switch to single.
I'm going to suffer through the rest of this season with multi stick but I've already started a parts list of things to order for christmas and next year.
@Earendur08 might I suggest, depending on what sticks you use, converting one with a rope mod and just trying it out. Also maybe use a figure 8 before dropping the $ on a madrock. Then all you really need is the rope and you can see if it's for you. From what you described though, I've been there lol, I think you will love it.
@tommyeden7896 already have a figure 8. I grabbed one last year because I was already thinking of single sticking and I was picking up some carabiners so I just grabbed the 8 as well.
I have lone wolf sticks that are pretty large. I could add an aider, I'd just need the rope.
For the next few days though, I'm in shotgun season and I have a few spots with long sightlines so I'm going to ground hunt a bit. Hopefully I get that tag filled and I can focus on my setup next year.
The thought of hauling all my gear out in the cold again makes me want to stay in bed lol. The ground hunt will be easier.

I was using one I had made by a gentleman through Facebook but now using the Tethrd Lockdown, those pouches are MASSIVE. They have more than enough room for anything you would need.

To me saddle hunting has become the new crossfit of hunting. "Everyone look at me!" This guys is in great shape, what is he saving maybe 5 pounds from carrying a light mobile stand and 3 sticks, to hang off the side of a tree by a rope after doing all that to get up there and back down? and thats only if you make it up or down without dropping that 1 stick. no thanks

The only common sense thing I recommend is wear all black to cover your upper body considering the inside of the blind is black and dont open unnecessary windows to silhouette yourself. Other then that, spray some water proof spray on the seams and roof. Dont forget your comfy chair, happy hunting.

It would be even more cumbersome than it already is. These saddles are crazy.

Meh it’s happened before! Just repel down and essentially do the same thing again. Just adds a few minutes to the climb as a whole.
