  • Quickly build a basic beehive from a round 5-gallon water bottle. You will first add this bottle to the modified swarm trap we already made to catch our bees, then later join it with other bottles as your colony grows.

you are a great teacher, well spoken direct instructions easy to follow. by the way thought you would like to know hot glue is prone to water leaks

Thanks. I'll have to look into alternatives to the hot glue. The way the bottle are built they are not inherently subject to water intrusion from the top. That is why I put the "pointy" end of the bottle up and make sure that the top edges overlap the bottom portion of the bottle.

@@BottleBeekeeping HI, love your channel!! I understand where you get the data from and that is GREAT (the book you talk about). so for us in the colder northern weather, would you go over options for putting the bottles in a way to help with keeping the bees safe during the cold weather and also work with us on where one can put the winter help/food for the bees? I know with a traditional hive there is sugar pieces one can put in the hive for the bees to eat, maybe we learn of a way to put this in a bottle of some size and attach it in the winter when they can use that to eat while not getting flowers, etc. I know of insulation wraps and such, but if you have ideas, can you let us know? i can test some stuff out too. Also, is there a way to perhaps have some 1 gallon bottles (more than one) attached for the extra honey? Perhaps two, so we have the one bottle, and when the hive grows, we build a second bottle, then we would put two one gallon extra storage bottles above that second bottle maybe? or can one do off shoots, so one bottle as the base with a honey bottle off to the side and an off to the side for the top bottle too? Also my neighbor is a bee keeper, I am betting any swarm i capture would be from his hives. I am having trouble finding the technology inserts you mention in your videos, can you do a video on that? OH, i found the heat and humidity monitor, it might be there....BUT you can also look into the IP or wifi cameras for monitoring too. I use them for chicks and chicken monitoring (and sheep/goat flock monitoring).....they are very useful tools too!

This is such a cool idea! Do you have a shopping list of what was used in this video? I counted: 1 water cooler bottle, 4 soda bottles (2L), step drill, box knife, glue gun, mesh, tape - anything I missed that I need to have to get started?

    Dumb question #1...
Once the hive made is it hung or placed another way to be accessible to the bees?
    Dumb question #2...
If we cut the top off of the bottle it leaves the bottle open? Is the top put back on later? How? Why is it cut off? And is it held back in place?
    Dumb question #3...
Do we put the water bottle cap back on to keep rain out?

      Good Questions.
      1) You can place it on a stand or hang it on a tree. There is a multipart series for how to build a base that will do either. If you go to the channel page, there is a playlist for "Entrance and tree mount".
      2) This is part 1 of a multi-part video series. The attachment of the top is shown at the end of the next in the series: "Top bars for round bottles" video. The top is taken off so that you can put top bars or frames inside the bottle before putting the lid back on. There is a series on the channel page "Round bottle beehive construction"
      3) Yes, the lid goes on to keep the rain out. The last part of the "Vents and lures" video also shows getting more ventilation for arid climates using a screened lid. There is an upcoming video that will expand on additional ventilation through the top suitable for all climates (that video will reference the "Thunder Dome" in the title.)
The two playlists on the channel home page cover almost all of it. Each video is relatively short. Finally, to get an overview of how the parts work together as a system, the video with the thumbnail "How it all works together" is a must see.

Wouldn’t silicone caulk be a superior adhesive?

    • @BottleBeekeeping
      @BottleBeekeeping  Рік тому +2

If it is a pure silicon caulk (like used in aquariums) it would be OK...but a number of people do not like how it adheres to wood. Since there are many wooden parts in the hive that will be bonded together with the glue, I decided to stick to hot glue throughout the process instead of switching back and forth.
I'm open minded and willing to change my opinion...
