  • Quickly build a basic beehive from a rectangular 5-gallon water bottle. You will first add this bottle to the modified swarm trap we already made to catch our bees, then later join it with other bottles as your colony grows.

Never did put any ventilation at the bottom, I thought those vents at the bottom also helped with excess moisture/drainage.. I'm building a bottle beehive and will try putting one vent at the bottom. Thanks so much for your videos. You do amazing work.

Looking forward to seeing the bees in the hive -- do you actually have a functioning hive yet? Also, want to see how honey is harvested in this system.

So am I. Sadly no bees yet - I bet on capturing a swarm, but the weather here has been absolutely horrible. Watch the Advoko Makes video from Russia for harvesting and a populated hive. Basically a super is made out of a gallon water bottle (or similar disposable container). This is then put on the top of the bottle stack. To harvest, the super is removed (only temporarily exposing a 2 square inch opening) and the plastic bottle cut open and the honey is pressed.

Excellent content. I saw Max’s video when it came out and have been trying to replicate it ever since, but this is filling some serious gaps in my ingenuity.
Thanks for putting together such a simple step by step process like you have on this channel. Especially with utilizing such accessible materials, this has so much potential in the US.
You mentioned a book in several videos that details these methods; how’s the publishing coming along for that?
Looking forward to trying this out.

I have a beta copy of the book. It is supposed to be released on Amazon this year, but I don't know the date. I'll put up a video when it does. Thanks

This is a view of frames inside the rectangular bottle. Since I get roughly 10x the views on the round bottle, I was prioritizing finishing that series of videos...but now that I know some of you are wanting to build rectangular (my preference) I'll have to the those videos posted as well.

I too am building in a rectangular bottle. In the picture it appears you built total frames instead of just the top. The frames on the side of the handle puzzle me. I can't make out how they are done. The ones under the vent holes and handle are interesting, can you build there? Also with the frames facing the vent holes will the frames further back away from the vents have enough air flow for the bees working there?

    Hi Bottle Beekeeping,
I started gathering the materials for the rectangular bottle hive but noticed that the design for the bottles from Walmart have changed since you made this video. The neck is much taller and the space below is much wider and taller to stack. Most importantly however, the bottle is mostly flush all the way down the bottle, without a lip above the handle for cutting. Is this a problem? I have a few of the older design that I’m using for water right now but the older design is not compatible with the new.

Wow. Thanks for the update. This is good to know. The taller neck should be a manageable issue (round bottles have taller necks), but I'll have to look to see how the the bottom and side are made. I'll make a run to my local Walmart to see if they have the new design. My email address can be found under the "About" tab on the channel page. Feel free to send me any pics there. Where are you located?

Thanks for the reply! Just found your email address (it’s not displayed on mobile so I had trouble finding the tab).
I confirmed the design change at two Walmart stores today; you are correct, the neck is just a bit longer and it seems the bottle is a slighter thinner plastic (crumples easier while stacked when top-down pressure is applied.

New rectangular bottles when stacked on older style (short spout) bottles. I have a solution for this problem and will post a video with the fix next week. In the mean time, if you are building rectangular bottles AND have already used some of the short spout bottles send me a PM via my email ound under the "About" tab on the channel page.

My concern is the hot glue, which might melt on a hot day. Is there another alternative?

    • @BottleBeekeeping
      @BottleBeekeeping  Рік тому +2

There are, but the melting point of hot glue is 250 degrees F. You and your bees will be dead before the glue melts. Keep in mind that you don't put the hive in direct sunlight (again you would cook the bees before the glue would melt). Also, in most circumstances, you should have a cover/insulator around the bottle (covered in later episodes) when you don't actually want to observe the bees.
