  • The duplex bottle beehive provides 90% more comb area in only 45% more space compared to a 5-gallon water bottle. It also provides a more natural, tree-like interior than 2 bottles stacked on each other.
Furthermore, this size is closer to the 30 Liter bottle used by Advoko Makes.

I'd guess the tree hanger needs to be beefed up a bit to accommodate the greater weight?

Great Guess. Thanks for playing along. Sadly, not correct. 2 clues: 1) the next video illustrates how a bottle hive is really just a Warre' observation hive, and 2) the video after that will feature the "Thunder Dome". :-)

I live where it gets 30 below at least once a can these be insulated enough to protect the bees? Thanks.

Potentially. What do other beekeepers in your area do? IF a Langstroth hive can make it, then this can make it with a little careful planning. IF a Warre hive can make it, then doing a double wrap of insulation and the "thunder dome" used as a Warre insulation top should be equivalent. The single layer of closed cell foam that I am using has the same R value as a 3/4" piece of wood.

Can I do the same with square 5 gal bucks?

Man! You just tortured bees! As a beekeeper with decades of experience this is nuts! Never do this! How do you protect them from the sun? Bees lived for millions years in the woods. Wood trees are made them more healthy, produce better and survive. And than we are complaining why bees are disappearing!
UPD: I am speaking about European honey bee species

I'm pretty sure this guy and a bunch of bottle beekepers are not the reason bees are disappearing... i saw another youtuber move on to dark well covered system that was mounted on a tree in the woods.

As shown in another video, the bottle gets covered by an insulating wrap when not being observed.

@@highonsmog I’m sure you are. Not native bees home cause their immune system of been more weaker for the viruses and disease. Well not to speak for the plastics - even wrong type of wood for the wooden beehive do that. And most of beefarm are been using Polystyrene beehives for a long time.
I can be even more specific about bee’s biology…
