  • On 23 November 1996, Ethiopian Airlines Flight 961 is forced to ditch after running out of fuel. The aircraft breaks up as the wings hit the water, killing 125 people. The aircraft had been hijacked and ran out of fuel because the hijackers did not believe the pilot's insistence that there was not enough fuel aboard to make it to the hijackers' planned destination, Australia.

    This got me all teary throughout the narrative. It appeared so real and gave the exact emotionally feeling as though I was right in that plane. Its so unfortunate that these hijackers wanted to have their way by all means even if its at the expense of the lives of innocent passengers on board including theirs. Escaped from Prison to be a fugitive in Australia. How did they even get on board on the plane? And if they claimed to have bombs on them, how did they get it pass through the security checks and scanning machines? This story is really pathetic knowing that about 125 out of 175 of the passengers lost their lives to these insane cowards who knew nothing about fuel level being low and can't reach desired destination. Even after the first engine stopped working they still didn't want to negotiate on an emergency landing which would have saved their own lives and that of others. Its so saddening and this story is really heartfelt. I applause captain Abate and his co-pilot. My condolences to the family of those whose loved ones lost their lives to that crash. I also learnt from this to always follow the captains instruction while on board. They are experienced enough to know what's best for passengers.

    I decided to come back to this video more than a year later (it's that old on the 'Wonder' channel) and it's still as insane as I remember it. The pilot was very well trained and handled the situation in the best possible way while the co-pilot did a very good job in executing their plan for the best possible survival rate, but what I noticed was the lack of comment on the amazing journalist and the sacrifice he made. Despite being disabled, he fought with the hijackers till, what it seems to be, his last breath. He was truly a warrior and hero and deserves just as much praise as the pilot and co-pilot because without his attempts at a distraction, this survival might not have been possible. I feel very sorry for the passengers and crew on-board and kudos to the heroes on this flight because you all are truly inspirational. This video is also very well made and I applaud the creators for it. You all are doing some great work out here by spreading awareness and giving knowledge and precaution. It really does suck that aviation is such a field that new precaution can come with a tragedy and grave mistake. Whatever the case, rest in peace, victims, and good job, survivors. ❤

    It’s sad that the only brave man who took action to rally passengers against the hijackers died in the crash. I understand the passengers were afraid to react to hijackers, but in that situation they were dying anyway. Instead of fighting for their lives when the had the chance, they chose not to do anything about it, not to mention they inflated their life jackets on plane. Maybe if they controlled the hijackers, the pilot could have done a safe emergency landing instead of crash landing, and saved more lives.

      They didn't fully know what the captain wanted + didn't know if their action would just result in the plane blowing up and everyone dying vs the water landing where people could survive + the one who did react was used to war situations vs everyone else who weren't

      until you’re in the situation yourself, i feel it’s unjust to judge others for not reacting to the hijackers. i’m sure a lot of them froze out of fear, shock, or even denial. it’s completely understandable that faced with the proposition of the hijackers blowing up the plane (which would kill everyone on board), others would’ve been more content with staying seated. we don’t know what would’ve happened had the passengers reacted, but it could’ve very likely ended up with the whole plane blowing up with no survivors. at least with the ditching 50 people were able to survive. i’m sure the ones who survived the ditching are glad they didn’t react because they could’ve lost their lives had the hijackers blown up the plane. and i’m sure some of the ones who didn’t survive regretted not reacting to the hijackers in the last moments of their life. but they couldn’t have known they would die in the ditching, nor could they have known they would’ve survived reacting to the hijackers. bottom line is, they had every right to decide not to react to the hijackers.

    • @kierstenszo125
      @kierstenszo125 2 роки тому +12

      @@kathleenharris6068 please read my comment above. the psychological component of fear that they would blow up the plane is a just reason for them not to react. and in fear and panic of losing one’s life, you don’t always think rationally. they didn’t know if they would die when the plane ran out of fuel, 50 people did survive this crash after all, however no one would’ve survived had the hijackers blown the plane up. there’s no way of knowing what would’ve happened had they reacted, but you can’t know for sure that more would’ve survived had they reacted. it’s just lucky 50 people got to survive this horrific incident.

      The worst thing about the 737 max disaster was the pilots did what Boeing asked to do as the workaround. The workaround was not tested for edge cases and did not work. Workaraound was to switch off the power trim and try to move the trim wheels manually. BUt at certain speeds and AoA it is physically impossible to move the wheels. Meanwhile everyone blamed the pilots. Boeing changed the controls without telling anyone. In the 737 NG you could switch off the auto trim and still use power to trim manually as there were 2 separate switches. In the 737 Max not only did Boeing add MCAS they also changed the behaviour of the switches which means either you have auto trim or you have manual trim but you cant have power assisted manual trim. The AoA and speed the pilots were at it was physically impossible to manual trim without power assist and as soon as they switched power assist on MCAS switched back on as well. This problem still exists in the 737 Max. They have added fixes in software to limit how far MCAS can go and they have added data from both AoA sensors. But the ability to switch off auto trim while using power assist to trim is still not there in the plane.

Yes, a few may die trying and not everyone can be courageous, but there are fates worse than death. Easy to say sitting safely behind my keyboard though.
