Despite the darkness of this event, I'm weirdly satisfied that the nurse on the plane is just prepping to survive in the ocean with snacks. Very practical folks on this flight
This is me and my husband HATES it because he's the consummate panicker. Like if you imagine a chicken with its head cutoff, that's about how helpful he is in an emergency 🤣
This historic film kept coming my way and each moment avoided it for very obvious reasons but changed my mind and watched the difficult and extraordinary situation. RIP to all those we lost and fervent prayers never to witness similar incident in our future.
God's blessings to the brave pilot and co pilot.I am surprised people did not try to over power the hijackers. For 3 hrs death was steering them and they did nothing.😢😢😢
Oh my God, after the crash, I felt so much sorrow and then tears of joy seeing people trying to help in whatever way they can. That's why we should all be one.
Not much joy. 50 out of 170 surviving. Imagine all those people trapped. I mean an average person when booking a flight, would he consider, i dont know swimming, should i or should i not board a plane thats not even supposed to fly over the ocean on its original route.
I think it was less of them disregarding his instructions to not inflate their life jackets and more of them not hearing him correctly. Through all the screaming and sheer panic they probably heard either inflate your life jackets or didn’t hear him at all and just followed what others were doing.
It's fairly common in a ditching situation for some people to panic and think it's safer to have an inflated life jacket ready to go when you hit the water and thus disregard the instructions, so some people definitely heard and disregarded. It's not to blame them, they just didn't know and were panicking
They likely would have been instructed on the proper procedures for using the life jackets when the plane first took off, but panic can really cloud your mind and make you forget what you were told to do in that situation. I mean the one guy was literally telling the other people not to inflate their life jackets but a lot of them did anyway. I doubt it was a case of mishearing him, and more just people reacting to what feels instinctive, which is water = lifejacket, while not thinking straight due to fear.
@@oMuStiiAI just learned you’re not supposed to inflate it until you’re in the water since every time I’ve flown they tell u how to inflate it not really when

Wow, this was a bit of a shock watching this, and hearing the what flight this was. Realizing my cousin had died on that flight. Some of the survivors told us he died trying to help people get out of the plane.
The crew did what they could in a very difficult situation with hijackers. Courage of the pilot and copilot, and yes the newsreporter were incredible. The passangers struggled with what to do. This was all before 9 11. God bless the people who lost their lives.
Agreed. What a tough situation. Just to note: 9-1-1 as an emergency number originates in 1938. This crash happened in 1996. So it doesn't predate 9-1-1 But the sentiment remains the same. No-one would be able to help them if they called 9-1-1, as emergency services can't do much about a plane hijacking. To stay calm and do what he did, Captain Leul Abate had to have a spine of steel. Especially knowing no one was coming to help. Massive respect.
I have difficulty believing the passengers did not rally when asked... 160+ people against 3 hijackers.... Massive respect to the journalist he deserved better.
@@pinoytechniko6925not only that I think they were bluffing about the bomb also because the impact would have detonated the bomb blowing the aircraft to bits
I live in Australia, I can't imagine what they wanted to come here for? The poor captain has been hijacked, more than once before! I can't imagine the stress! I know I would have a REALLY hard time going back to flying 😬
I watched this with my kids, who are 16 and 18, and they cannot understand why the passengers or crew didn't try to overpower the hijackers. I think it's hard for the post-9/11 generation to imagine how different not only security was at airports and on airplanes, but also our mindset about hijackings. Everyone just knew you cooperated with hijackers and followed their demands. And why not? Nine times out of 10, it worked. Plane lands, hijackers give up or are killed, and everyone's OK. Of course, everything changed after 9/11 -- actually, it changed DURING 9/11, when the passengers on Flight 93 knew their only hope was to rush the cockpit, and they fought back. Today, everyone just knows you try and overpower the hijackers -- and that's usually what has happened in the few times someone has hijacked or otherwise threatened a flight since 2001.
I think Flight 93 is why my young post-911 born gen think they should have fought back. I personally don't really blame the passengers as much anymore. It is scary being in a hijacking.
Using 911 with a lot of grammar to compensate the cowardice behaviour displayed on this flight, very funny😅.i was born way before the horrors of the 80s,90s,2000s,it's not a licence for cowardice behaviour
@@odemaj8605 So you read my comment and thought, "Aha! He's using 9/11 and grammar(???) to compensate for cowardice!"? That gap between what I wrote and what you think it meant is not only as wide as it could possibly be -- it's also downright bizarre. And here I thought I was using grammar to make sure my writing made sense. You should try it sometime. Especially since your second sentence literally means that the year of your birth somehow made you ineligible to be a coward. I'm going to guess that's not what you meant. Anyway, as for the point I think you were trying to make, no, I wasn't doing anything to compensate for cowardice because I didn't need to. It was a non-issue since cowardice had little to do with why people didn't fight back before 9/11. They cooperated with hijackers primarily because it was thought to give everyone the best chance of survival. And history bore that out. Before 9/11, almost every hijacking where cooperation was employed resulted in the safe release of those on board. This flight was a rare exception, obviously, but you can't blame the passengers for that -- hindsight is 20/20.
@@RMR1 my meaning is simple, you claimed that pos911 generation might most likely lack the understanding as to why the passengers opted in doing nothing than doing something, I didn't mean ineligibility but eligibility, having to experience indirectly aviation horrors of that time and using all those horrors as an excuse to mediate their cowardice is hillarious ,its much more easier to just say they were too frightened to react to the hijackers, don't make glorified excuses for them
In a lot of plane crashes it's quick, albeit horrible. Here, the passengers had to live through an entire flight fearing for their lives, knowing its most likely going down, then suffer a plane crash, then those who survived end up trapped and watch the water fill in the fuselage and drawn them, such an unimaginable drawn out death, RIP. It is not a surprise when the pilot called out for them to act, people didn't, despite knowing this is their best chance of surviving. Most people are too scared to fight, and even more scared to take lead. If a few got up, many will get up after, but you need those first few with the courage and initiative.
I'm surprised that the co-pilot didn't take action with a few big passengers to overtake the criminals. It would have been fairly easy to do so since they had no weapons.
Certainly the last time I was on a flight the flight stewardesses were making a point to tell you this during the safety briefing, and it was also on the safety cards.
True. But I thought the reason was that inflating the vest would make it harder to evacuate quickly -- not that it would push you to the top of the cabin when the plane sunk.
When the captain announces "fight the highjackers" , it is clear that all other hope of 100% survival is lost. I would want to fight the highjackers. Not sit and wait for a crash. Such sad story
@@abacab87 bs. They knew, or many knew, especially when the photog tried to rally them. I understand that this was before 9/11 but they were cowardly. I'd rather die quickly in a potential bombing than crash but that's just me.

Sideline effect or bystander effect. It's actually really rare to get people to respond to this kind of situation. And honestly, can't blame them. It's a scary situation and you never know what you'll do until you're in it.
This was good acting because I found that primary hijacker to be so annoying and stubborn. Otherwise, very interesting - great job to the captain. So glad there were survivors.
Wonderful video and extremelly well narrated. I supose all people in the video were actors and if so they portraied their parts beautifully and very convincing. Unecessary to say that that pilot was a true hero and rightefully so. Thank you for the great video.
As a flight attendant, the post crash scene hits different. I’m afraid many, if not all my passengers would not follow our instructions and lead to their demise
Good for'em. They deserved what they got, even after they were killed I would have rotated their heads 180 degrees just for the fun of it.They ruined everybody's day.
What did the hijackers think would happen even if they did get to Australia? That they'd just be welcomed and waved through customs to be refugees?! Captain Abate is an incredible pilot
So it took 100s of hijackings and a 3,000 death toll terrorist attack to finally make people realize “hmm maybe we should strengthen the pilot door”. It’s one of those they’ll never learn moments
Congratulations to the pilot and co-pilot! Also to the brave passengers. Sorry for those who needlessly lost their lives because of the foolish and selfish hijackers
@@KristinCortez Interestingly enough, I was curious if the film was paying to use brand products, and if so which ones, so I backed it up as well just to see, and that was a little surprising. As a praying man, I love that he prayed that he'd rather not be in the situation, though if he must that he'd be able to save his passengers.
Indeed
That captain is simply amazing to have to deal with raving lunatics and at the same time remained cool and tried to develop the best strategy he could
Despite the darkness of this event, I'm weirdly satisfied that the nurse on the plane is just prepping to survive in the ocean with snacks. Very practical folks on this flight
So practical they forgot about how much they outnumbered the hijackers 😅
This is me and my husband HATES it because he's the consummate panicker. Like if you imagine a chicken with its head cutoff, that's about how helpful he is in an emergency 🤣
What an amazing Pilot. God Bless.
And the award for dumbest plane hijackers in history goes to… the hijackers of Ethiopian flight 961.
I think they were just playing dumb, I have a feeling they knew what they were doing, but they just wanted to die and didn't want to talk much.
But the brochure says it can fly for 11hrs though... What idiots, clearly they did no research.
Literally 0 🧠
@@KingK2205seriously doubt that.
@@xclusivechu yup just like the passengers who stayed in their seats awaiting death.
@kathleenreefer225 I was quite surprised. May their souls find rest
I am so addicted to these videos and this channel. They are done so well. The narrator does such a great job too.
What a great pilot: Captain Abate. What a hero for sure! Pilots are so cool under constant pressure.
The Captain Abata showed himself as a real Hero..
Nice to see my fellow scuba divers helping out the survivors.
Oh my God, after the crash, I felt so much sorrow and then tears of joy seeing people trying to help in whatever way they can. That's why we should all be one.
❤
Me too❤
Not much joy. 50 out of 170 surviving. Imagine all those people trapped. I mean an average person when booking a flight, would he consider, i dont know swimming, should i or should i not board a plane thats not even supposed to fly over the ocean on its original route.
@@indianfan1029if they weren't all such cowards maybe they would have lived.
@@UnderDawgPokerfor real. 170 people vs 3 guys. Come on.
Captain Abate, you are a real hero and an inspiration to all.

So it doesn't predate 9-1-1
But the sentiment remains the same. No-one would be able to help them if they called 9-1-1, as emergency services can't do much about a plane hijacking.
To stay calm and do what he did, Captain Leul Abate had to have a spine of steel. Especially knowing no one was coming to help. Massive respect.
@@asherscottLI think they meant 9/11 hijackings not 911 the emergency number
Same here, I am sure they meant the 9/11 hijackings on Sept 11th 2001
I have difficulty believing the passengers did not rally when asked... 160+ people against 3 hijackers.... Massive respect to the journalist he deserved better.
They thought they were 10 or 11 , turned out the highjackers are bluffing.
The problem is that humans tend to be either monsters or cowards, with very, very few exceptions.
@@coolnut99that's a fact 💯
@@pinoytechniko6925not only that I think they were bluffing about the bomb also because the impact would have detonated the bomb blowing the aircraft to bits

I live in Australia, I can't imagine what they wanted to come here for? The poor captain has been hijacked, more than once before! I can't imagine the stress! I know I would have a REALLY hard time going back to flying 😬
They thought they'd have freedom in Australia as they had escaped from prison.
They went right back but I bet they locked the cockpit door.
Seriously, I've heard of people trying to reach Australia by sea and being stuck on an island and left there by the authorities to die or whatever.
I actually think they were coming to get you.. anyway am glad they didn't make it down to you 🤣🤣🤣
They said why. To escape prison & better job lives etc
What a pilot! All those hijackings plus an actual crash and off he goes still flying. No PTSD for him! 🙏
Just another bad day at the office. Pass the salt.
If this had happened to me, I would be reconsidering my career options. He is one tough customer.
Yes passengers are also willing to step in to subdue irrate, irrational and intoxicated passengers when staff are overwhelmed.
@@RMR1 my meaning is simple, you claimed that pos911 generation might most likely lack the understanding as to why the passengers opted in doing nothing than doing something,
I didn't mean ineligibility but eligibility, having to experience indirectly aviation horrors of that time and using all those horrors as an excuse to mediate their cowardice is hillarious ,its much more easier to just say they were too frightened to react to the hijackers, don't make glorified excuses for them
this episode was INSANE! the pilot was so chill when the hijackers came in. man had guts!
He most likely said oh no. Here we go again. #3.
Just another day flying
Nothing is inevitable.. no one s immune 2 anything!!!
Salute to the incredible courage of Captain Abate..
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
This pilot did an AMAZING landing… very smart
Who else agrees that captain abate was the best pilot ever , all the love goes to you men
In a lot of plane crashes it's quick, albeit horrible.
@@cgustaff4807 Right, I m not going Lie as soon as I heard no weapons. I would have went into fight mode.
This story lives in my head rent free as a reminder not to inflate my lifejacket god forbid if I ever get into a situation like this.
Let this also be a lesson: Don't inflate your life jackets until you're out if you're plane landed on the water
Certainly the last time I was on a flight the flight stewardesses were making a point to tell you this during the safety briefing, and it was also on the safety cards.
Yes something learned today
It's indeed a great lesson to learn. Thank you
True. But I thought the reason was that inflating the vest would make it harder to evacuate quickly -- not that it would push you to the top of the cabin when the plane sunk.
Even when ppl know this, the panic and speed of the situation may affect them and cause the critical error.
When the captain announces "fight the highjackers" , it is clear that all other hope of 100% survival is lost. I would want to fight the highjackers. Not sit and wait for a crash.
Such sad story
He should have been more direct, but I think he was hoping to say it in a way that hijackers would not understand, but the passengers would.

Sad knowing we watched those people last moments, knowing they were inside from the beach’s view camera.
What did the hijackers think would happen even if they did get to Australia? That they'd just be welcomed and waved through customs to be refugees?!

In those days, most hijackings involved landing an airport and making demands.
Are you implying they wouldn't be? "Doctors and engineers", remember?
They were so lucky they 1. Had an amazing captain to land the plane, and they were so close to inhabited islands.
I am happy that the pilot and the co-pilot were not dissuaded from the enjoyment they get flying.
I remember this accident.i think it was 1996. The captain did very well, under the terrible circumstances.
This captain is a LEGEND
So it took 100s of hijackings and a 3,000 death toll terrorist attack to finally make people realize “hmm maybe we should strengthen the pilot door”. It’s one of those they’ll never learn moments
Well, they still have hundreds of hostages. Could you really deny them entry when they start killing hostages?
The bravery of the pilots!...God bless them!
Congratulations to the pilot and co-pilot! Also to the brave passengers. Sorry for those who needlessly lost their lives because of the foolish and selfish hijackers
